Step 1 – Download and Installation

As with most any software, the first step to getting up and running with MySQL is to obtain and install the product. You can download the setup file fromhttp://dev.mysql.com/downloads/index.html. As of this writing the current version is MySQL 4.1 so that’s the version I’ll be using for the rest of this article. Unless you have a reason to do otherwise, I’d recommend just downloading the pre-compiled binaries for you current platform. In this case I’ll be installing on a Windows XP machine so I downloaded the normal Windows version which includes the installer. The download is just under 35 MB so over it shouldn’t take too long to get via any resonable internet connection.

The installation is straight-forward and caused no problems for the very modest laptop I installed it on. Just so you have an idea of what to expect, I’m including screen captures of several steps of the setup process.

As you can see in the screen capture above, at the end of the setup process the installer asks if you’d like to configure the MySQL Server. If you choose to do so, it will launch the MySQL Server Instance Configuration Wizard which brings us to the next step in the process.

Step 2 – Configuration

The MySQL Server Instance Configuration Wizard makes configuring your server really simple. Configuration is straight forward and I just used the default setting for most everything.

If your’re installing on a dedicated database server or a shared server you should obviously select the appropriate choice. Since I’m installing on my laptop, I simply left the server type as “Developer Machine”. This setting won’t offer the same performance, but it also won’t use as many system resources.

I made sure to enable TCP/IP networking in order to allow the web server to connect to the database when we get to building a web page to query the database. If you’ll be running the database and web servers on the same physical computer then you can disable this option to prevent access to the database via the network.

Step 3 – MySQL Administrator

While it’s certainly not required, I highly recommend you download and install the MySQL Administrator. It’s a great little application that provides a GUI to help you manage your new database server. While you can get up and running using only the command line, for users who are used to using Windows applications and wince at the thought of editing configuration files by hand or using a command prompt it’s almost a necessity. For the rest of this article, I’ll assume you’ve installed MySQL Administrator and I’ll be using it for illustration.

Step 4 – Creating a Database

In order to create our database, we first need to connect to the server. Run MySQL Administrator and login to your server using the password you set during installation.

You’ll then want to select the “Catalogs” item at the bottom left of the MySQL Administrator window. This should bring up a list of the current databases on the server (There should be two of them: “mysql” and “test”). If you right-click in the small window where they are listed you should get the option to “Create New Schema”.

You’ll then be prompted to enter a name for the new database. I’ll be using “mydatabase” as the example for the remainder of this article.

Once created, your new database will appear in the Schemata list along with the other databases on the server. Selecting it from this list will bring up its details in the right hand pane.

There’s not much to see because the database is still empty… so let’s put something in it.

Step 5 – Creating a Table

To create a table simply click on the “Create Table” button. This brings up the following dialog box:

As you can see, I’ve named the table “mytable” and added 4 fields to it: an auto-incrementing primary key id field, an integer field, a text field, and a date/time field.

When you’re done making changes, you simply click the “Apply Changes” button. A window that looks something like the one below will pop up showing you the SQL that will be executed and asking you to confirm that you want to save changes to the table design.

At this point, we’ve got a database named “mydatabase” that contains a table named “mytable”. Now all we need is to add some rows of data to the table.

Step 6 – Adding Data

In the real world, data in your table would probably come in via your application. To get some sample data into our table, I’m simply going to insert a few lines by hand. To do this I’ll use the MySQL Command Line Client. If you’re still in the MySQL Administrator you can access the command line from the “Tools” menu (Tools
->
MySQL Command Line Client) otherwise you can run it from the MySQL group on the Start Menu.

The first command in the screen above tells the server which database I want to be working in. The second and third commands simple insert some dummy data and are the same except for the the differences in the data being inserted.

Now we’ve got two sample rows of data in our table. At this point our database server is up and running with a database, a table and even some data.

Browse the installation disc to find the setup program if you are using a disc for installation. Right-click on the setup program and select “Run As Administrator.” As before, click “Continue” if you are asked whether you want to run the program.

Step3
Wait while the installer launches. Navigate through the installation program using the “Next” button, accepting the Adobe user agreement when it is presented to you.

Step4
Select the location on your computer where you wish to install Photoshop CS3. The default location will be in the “Program Files” section of your C: drive; you can specify a different location if you prefer, however. Click “Next” to continue the installation.

Step5
Enter your name, company information, and product key when prompted. Click the “Next” button.

Step6
Allow the Photoshop CS3 installer to connect via the Internet to the Adobe activation server in order to fully activate the software.

Step7
Wait while the installer program finishes the installation of Photoshop CS3. Close the installer program once it has finished.

In this tip we will show you how to remove cookies and temporary files that you won’t need anymore and speed up your Windows and free up some additional space.

What are Cookies? They are a text file that stores on your computer anytime you visit a site and they
track you do. This could slow your computers, because everytime you access a site, it takes time to download them.

What are Temporary Files? Temp Files are all the files or folders installed, opened or used by
administrator. This could take a lot of space, and is recommended to delete them.

Note: System Volume Information and Temp Files are the most affected by viruses and spyware. It is
recommended to have a good AntiVirus or a good AntiSpyware.

Step 1 – Show Hidden Files

Very Important !

You must have the Hidden Files Turned Off, so you can delete your cookies and temporary files !

Show Hidden Files Tip

After you’re done with Hidden Files you can start with Step 2.

Step 2 – Locate Folders

Go to My Computer.

Go to Documents and Settings Folder.

Go to Your Windows Account Name Folder.

Here is an example: C:/Documents and Settings/John Smith

Very good. Here are our 2 Folders who must be cleaned up.

Cookies

Local Settings (Read Step 3)

Step 3 – Delete Cookies and Temporary Files

After you Deleted All Files in Cookies Folder (without index.dat – access denied) you can continue with the Local Settings Folder

Now you must Delete All in the below folders:

Temp

Temporary Internet Files

Notes:
– Also you can delete all folder C:/System Volume Information
– Files in use can’t be deleted. Delete only what you can

This article will cover a normal ( default ) installation of AVG Antivirus Free Edition, version 8.5 on Windows XP and Vista. We will also show you how to update AVG Antivirus Free Edition or how you can perform a full system scan. Before anything else, in case that you don’t have the antivirus software, you can download AVG Antivirus Free Edition from here. So, let’s start with the first thing that we will see after we have our antivirus copy. Navigate to where you downloaded the antivirus program and make sure to open it. The program should look like in this picture :

Please click on the program and you should see another window that will start extracting AVG Antivirus files needed to start the installation wizard.

After the setup will extract the files you should see a welcome window message “Welcome to the AVG Free Setup Program“. Choose your setup language ( default language is English ) and click on “Next” button.

Now you should see an “Acceptance Notice” window that tells you that this copy of AVG Antivirus is intended for personal, home use only. Please read everything and if you agree click on the “Accept” button.

Again, now it’s time for “license Agreement” window, please read all the terms stated on the “license Agreement” and if you agree with them, click on “Accept” button.

You should see another window that asks you to “Select Installation Type” and you can choose between “Standard Installation” or “Custom Installation“. In this article we are going to choose the “Standard Installation” ( it’s the default installation ) and to do that make sure to select it and click on “Next” button.

Now you should see the “Activate your AVG Free license” window. I really don’t understand why that license number it’s being displayed since the antivirus it’s free, however we are going to click on “Next” button to move further.

An additional feature called “AVG Security Toolbar” allows you to install it on your computer. I have install it but honestly it’s not very useful for this free version, it has all features in paid versions so you can choose to install it or skip it. To install your antivirus without this security toolbar, make sure to uncheck “Yes, I would like to install the AVG Security Toolbar“. So it’s up to you if you want to install it or not. To continue with the installation click on “Next” button.

In the following window called “Setup Summary” you can review one more time the path to the installation folder, the license user and the license type. If those settings are correct press on the “Finish” button. Otherwise you may use the “Back” button and return to make changes.

If you clicked on “Finish” button, you should see now the installation window that is currently installing AVG Antivirus Free Edition on your computer. Please be patient as this may take a couple of seconds or minutes depending on your performance.

If everything went well your should see a new window that informs you with a “Installation complete” message. Press the “OK” button to continue with the “AVG First Run Wizard“.

Although the installation process has finished, there are few steps named “”AVG First Run Wizard” that will configure our antivirus. In the first step “Step 1 of 8: Introducing the AVG First Run Wizard ” click on the “Next” button.

The next step called “Step 2 of 8: Schedule regular scans and updates” AVG Wizard asks you about the update and scan process. You can leave it as it is, however if you want to scan manually your computer you can uncheck the box that says “Enable daily scanning ( recommended )” and click on “Next” button.

The next step called “Step 3 of 8: Help us to identify new threats” will ask you if you agree to provide informations about detected threats to AVG. You can leave it as it is and click on “Next” button.

Pay attention to this step called “Step 4 of 8: Configure the AVG Security Toolbar” that asks you nicely if you want to change your search engine to Yahoo. If you want to use Yahoo Search make sure to check that box “Yes, change my default search engine to Yahoo!“. If you already use a search engine and you don’t want to change it, click on “Next” button.

The next step called “Step 5 of 8: Update AVG protection” asks you about the immediately update process. It’s going to search for any available updates and it’s going to download them. You can skip this step but I strongly recommend you to leave it as it is. For an immediate update click on the “Next” button.

The next step is called “Step 6 of 8: AVG Update” and it’s doing as the name suggests an update ( if available ) to the antivirus database. You should see the progress ( please be patient ) in a window similar with this picture :

Once the update finishes, you should see the same window displaying this message : “Update was finished successfully.” Please click on the “Next” button to continue with the “AVG First Run Wizard“.

The next step called “Step 7 of 8: Register AVG Anti-Virus Free” tells you more things about the benefits for registering your free license. I chosed to skip it as this article would become huge but you can choose to register by using the “Register AVG Anti-Virus Free” button. To continue with the wizard, click on the “Next” button.

The last step, step 8 called “Step 8 of 8: AVG protection configuration is complete” informs you that AVG has been successfully configured. You can now press the “Finish” button as you have correctly installed and configured AVG Antivirus Free Edition.

The main purpose of this article was to show you how to install AVG but I believe that if would be useful if I would show you how to access the main interface, how to perform an update and finally how to perform a full computer scan. I didn’t want to expand this article ( there are a lot of pictures and it can increse load times on dial-up connections ) but it seems to me that it would become more complete. Now, that you have finished the installation, let’s open AVG Antivirus Free, better said let’s access the program interface. To do so, look on your desktop for an AVG Antivirus icon or look on your taskbar on the right corner for the AVG icon. To help you to locate it, I have a picture that shows you a way to get access to this antivirus interface :

And here it is, the AVG Antivirus interface will open and it may look like in the following picture ( at the time that this article was written, the current version is 8.5 ).

As the interface it’s very simple and intuitive to use we are going to perform an update manually. To do so, look on the left bar ( having the blue colour ) and click on the “Update Now” button. The antivirus will start to update his databases if there are new definitions available for download.

After the update process, it’s now time to perform a full computer scan. Again, return to antivirus interface, look on the left blue bar and click on “Computer scanner” button. You can now perform two types of scan, the first one called “Scan whole computer” and the second one called “Scan specific files or folders“. We are going to use the firsty option called “Scan whole computer“.

If you clicked on “Scan whole computer” it means that your antivirus is going to scan your entire computer. Once that will start scanning, it will look like in the following picture :

When the scan process will end, it will display you the results, as you can see in the following picture, my antivirus finished the scan in 3 minutes and a couple of seconds ( I have just installed Windows and I don’t have any programs or files on it, this is why he moved so fast – and yes I have a powerful computer ).

You may now click on “Close results” button ( after the scan ends ) and you will be taken back to software interface.

Now that you have learned how to install AVG Antivirus Free on Windows and you know how to update and perform a full scan of your computer I would like to remind you that you should use one antivirus software at a time on a single computer to avoid any conflicts. Also, there are some issues related to update problems or some new issues that are found after a new version of AVG is being released. You can check our section of FAQ related to AVG Antivirus since we try to keep this section updated with the most known problems and you can always download the latest versions. As a final advice I would like to mention that the best protection is always prevention. Make sure to have your antivirus updated daily, make sure to have the latest system updates and also make sure to have a firewall on your computer.

Please visit this link: http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html and download the version that matches your language.

Once you have downloaded it locate the file that you just downloaded. The icon should appear like the image below:

Now double-click on the file to launch the installation of Avast!

Next you’ll see this screen:

Click next.

You will get another window with the ReadMe File, just click Next, again.

Now you get the beloved Legal Agreement, just click I agree, and then click Next to continue. You will now see an image similar to the one below:

I would recomend using the “Typical” installation. Make sure Typical is selected then click Next.

Now if you selected “Minimal” you won’t see “skins” here. After reviewing this for a second and confirming that what you have on your screen is similar to mine, click the Next button. (Note: the “Free Space” will vary from computer to computer. Since I have about 170 Gigabytes free that is why my Free Space is so large.)

After pressing Next, you will get the above message. Basically if you select Yes it will do a quick scan of your hard drive upon boot-up. This scan will start before you log-in into Windows. I recomend you select No, because even though this scan will only happen once, this scan can take quiet a while. It took almost an hour for my hard drive.

If you have Microsoft Anti-Spyware, or other similar program installed you may be prompted with a similar message. Click the Allow button to allow this change to take affect.

Now you have to restart your machine. I highly advise you to select Restart and then click Finish.

After you restart you will get a message about Avast! it will give you the general “Hello and Thank you for choicing our Product.” Also after you restart you will notice 2 new icons in the bottom right corner of the screen.

The icon with the I is for the “Virus Recovery Database” (VRDB). What this does is virutally makes copies of the program you have installed and if one of them gets infected with a virus this will replace the files infected so the program function like before. The A is the On-Access Protection.

Very Important – after restarting, right click on the A in the taskbar and select Updating, the highlight Program.

You will get this popup after its done updating. If Avast! had to download anything for your computer you may get a message asking you to restart.

FTP is the file transfer protocol. Anyone with an FTP client application (such as Internet Explorer, CuteFTP, WS-FTP and others) can connect to your FTP server. Here’s how you install it:

Step 1: Log in as a member of the Administrators group on your Windows XP computer.

Step 2: Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Step 3: With the Control Panel in category view, double click on the Add or Remove Programs icon.

Step 4: In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click on the Add/Remove Windows Components button on the left side of the dialog box.

Step 5: In the Windows Components dialog box, scroll down to find the Internet Information Servers (IIS) entry. Click on that entry and then click the Details button.

Step 6: Put a checkmark in the following check boxes: Common Files, Documentation, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service, Internet Information Services, Snap-In and SMTP Service. Click OK, and then click Next in the Windows Component Wizard dialog box. The Wizard will complete the installation process.

Step 7: After the FTP Service is installed, click Start and point to All Programs. Point to Administrative Tools and click on Internet Information Services. This opens the Internet Information Services console.

Step 8: To put files into your FTP directory, just open Windows Explorer and navigate to your InetPubftproot folder. Copy your files into the ftproot folder. Those files will then be available to users who connect to your FTP folder.

Step 9: After you put files into your FTP folder, open Internet Explorer and type ftp://computername. Computername is the name of the computer that you installed the FTP onto. You’ll see a list of files and folders in your FTP directory. If you put your FTP server on the Internet, users will have to use an IP address instead of a computer name, since your home network computer names are not available to Internet users.

If you are a developer using ASP.NET, one of the first things you’ll want to install on Windows 7 or Vista is IIS (internet information server). Keep in mind that your version of Windows may not come with IIS. I’m using Windows 7 Ultimate edition.

First, go to Control Panel, and then click on Programs. You’ll see a link for “Turn Windows features on or off”

If you expand the Internet Information Services tree node, you can see that there are a lot of options beneath it. You will probably want to explore these options, because even if you click on IIS, some of the necessary options for doing development aren’t checked.

Once you’ve gone ahead and checked the items you want, and clicked OK, you’ll see this dialog for a while….

Now when you navigate in your browser to localhost, you’ll see the new default page… slick!

A guide to setting up Java
What is Java and why do I need it?
Java is a programming language that allows programs to be written that can then be run on more than one type of operating system. A program written in Java can run on Windows, UNIX, Linux etc. as long as there is a Java runtime environment installed.

Some of the programs on this website have been written in Java, so you will need to install the Java runtime environment in order to run them.
Where can I download Java?
You can download version 1.4 of Java from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html. If you want to be able to write your own Java programs that you can compile and run, then you must download the SDK (Software Developers Kit). If you just want to be able to run a Java program that has already been compiled, then you can get away with just downloading the JRE (Java Runtime Environment). Once you have decided which you need, download either the SDK or the JRE. Choose the download that is most suitable for your operating system.

Setting up Java
If you do not have Java installed already, follow the instructions provided with the download in order to install Java.

Once Java has been installed, you will be able to run Java program by running the
java
executable that was installed. You may find it convenient to add the location of this file to your operating system’s path variable, otherwise you will need to explicitly refer to the absolute location of
java
.
Setting up the path

Windows 2000/XP users may set their path by right-clicking on ‘My Computer’ and selecting ‘Properties’. Under the ‘Advanced’ tab, there is a button that allows you to set the ‘Environment variables’. Click on this and alter the ‘Path’ variable so that it also contains the path to the Java executable. For example, if you have installed Java in
c:\jdk
and your path is currently set to
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
, then you would change your path to read
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32;c:\jdk\bin

When you open a new command prompt, it will reflect these changes and allow you to run java programs by typing “java”. If you have installed the SDK, then you will also be able to run “javac” to compile stuff.

Windows 95/98/ME users may find that their path variable is stored in a different place. Edit the
c:\autoexec.bat
file and add the following line at the end:
SET PATH=%PATH%;c:\jdk\bin

(This also assumes that you have installed Java in c:\jdk)

Linux, UNIX, Solaris, FreeBSD users must set their PATH variable to point to where the java binaries have been installed. Please refer to your shell documentation if you have trouble doing this. For example, if you use bash as your shell, then you would add the following line to the end of your .bashrc:
export PATH=/path/to/java:$PATH

Setting up the classpath
In addition to setting up the path, you also need to tell Java where to find compiled class files at runtime. You will probably want to set the classpath to include at least the current working directory (
.
)

Eg:
SET CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;.

The classpath can also contain other directories that may contain compiled class files. Note that if you are using classes that are contained inside a .jar file, you will need to specify the full path and name of this file in the classpath, rather than just the name of the directory it is contained within.
Java Documentation
You may optionally download the Java documentation, which includes API pages that explain in good detail how each Java class can be used.
