WELCOME TO CSAB

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Governm ent of India took a policy decision in 2002 to conduct an All India Engineerin g Entrance Examination (AIEEE) annually, doing away with many of the large number of entrance examinations that were being conducted till then by various institutes in the country for admission to undergraduate degree programmes in the disciplines of Engineering/Technology and Architecture/ Planning. This initiative has been wi dely accepted and appreciated.

A Central Counseling Board (CCB) constituted by the Govt. of India coordinated admissions to UG degree programmes in engineering, technology and architecture in respect of selected institutes till . From 2013 onwards, Central Counseling Board (CCB) and All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEE E) has been renamed as Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) and JEE (Mains) respec tively. The CSAB for 2014 has been constituted with Director, Malaviya National I nstitute of Technology Jaipur, as its Chairman. The Office Memorandum of Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India is placed at Annexure V of this brochure.

30 NITs, 12 IIITs/IIITM/IIITDM, 16 other Central/State GovernmentFUNDED Institutes (GFTIs) and some Self Financed Technical Institutes (SFTIs), list displayed on CSAB website will admit candidates on the basis of their All India Rank (AIR) in JEE (Main)-2014 to the first year of Engineering/Technology and Architecture / Planning Programs through a centralized seat allocation procedure, for the academic session 2014-15.

Important features of the admission procedure, fee refund rules, admission schedule, list of Reporting/Help Centers, list of Participating Institutes with total number of seats, fee structure and contact addresses, seat distribution in the Institutes etc., are given in information brochure. Candidates are advised to read information brochure carefully and visit CSAB website regularly for updates and for details regarding the entire online admission process as no postal communication will be used.

In case of any dispute arising out of the seat allocation process at any stage up to the final allocation of institute and/or branch, the decision of Chairman, CSAB-2014 shall be final and binding. The jurisdiction for legal disputes, if any, will be limited to the courts at Jaipur only.

For smooth functioning of admission procedure resulting into maximum number of candidates getting admission to the course and institute of their choice and minimizing the number of vacant seats, it is advised that the candidates should carefully follow the admission procedure given in information brochure. The procedure offers enough flexibility at every round of allotment and candidates are urged to co-operate by not prolonging their final decision on admission after seat allotment. This will facilitate in catering to the needs of larger number of candidates seeking admission through CSAB-2014.

IIT JEE Application Form

Aspirants can register Offline using the prescribed Optical Machine Readable (OMR) Application Form which can be obtained by cash purchase from bank branches given below with effect from 11 th November, 2011.

Sale of OMR IIT JEE Application Form ( Offline ) and Information Brochure will start from 10.00 A.M. ( IST ) on 11 November, 2011 and it will close at 5.00 P.M. ( IST ) on 5 th December, 2011. The IIT JEE Application Forms material can be obtained from any of the designated bank branches in each zone listed.

Note : Please note that Office of JEE is not responsible for any postal delay or irregularity or loss during postal transit.

“Admit cards for writing IIT-JEE on 8th April have been despatched to all eligible applicants. Persons who have not received the admit cards or are unable to see the details of the allotted exam centre are advised to contact the Chairman, JEE of the zonal IIT with relevant documents. Process For Filling IIT JEE OMR Application Form

IIT JEE Application Form are Optical Machine Readable (OMR) format. As the data in the IITJEE OMR Applications will be reads through special machine which reads only the dark bubbles that Aspirants make on the OMR sheet. So Students must be careful while darkening bubbles.
Candidates should use only black ball point pen for filling the IIT JEE OMR Application Form. HE/She should not use gel/ink/felt pen as it might smudge the form
Candidates should not Fold, cut, tear, or wrinkle the IITJEE Application Form. There should not be any stray marks or whitener anywhere on the Application Form. Candidate must be careful that there be no write or place any mark over the barcodes.
Students can first Fill their Options in the Xerox copy of the Application Form after ensuring that all the details in the photo copies are correct, one must start Filling the Original Applications.
If there is any discrepancy between the written data and the bubbled data in your application, the bubbled data will be taken as final
IIT JEE Application must be complete Filled because Incomplete Application Form will be rejected.

IIT JEE Online Application Process

IIT JEE Online Application Form
Candidates can apply IIT JEE Online Application Form by logging on to JEE website http://www.jee.iitb.ac.in/.
Candidates can apply IIT JEE Online Form with ease as step wise instructions are provided.
IIT JEE Online Application Portal will be open from 8.00 A.M. ( IST ) on 31 October, 2011 to 5.00 P.M. ( IST ) on 10 December, 2011.

IIT JEE Online Application Cost

The examination fee is 900/- for GE / OBC / DS candidates and 450/- for SC / ST / PD and female candidates. Candidates can pay Online with credit / debit cards of major banks. Alternatively, payment can be made through challans of designated banks.

IIT JEE Online Submission of Forms

The envelope containing the completed OMR IIT JEE Application Form and enclosures should be addressed to the IIT located in the zone where the candidate wishes to appear for the examination (irrespective of the institute at which the candidate desires to seek admission ). The envelope must be sent by Registered Post / Speed Post only. Do not send it through ordinary post or private courier services. Please keep the postal receipt for future reference.

One can also submit in person the completed IIT JEE Application Form at any of the JEE offices at the IITs. IIT JEE Application Forms in IIT Delhi zone may be submitted in person at :

Note: In IIT Madras Zone, the completed IIT JEE Application Form can be submitted at the same branch of Indian Bank from where the candidate has purchased the form.

IIT JEE Admit Card

The admit card must have the name, registration number, application number, signature, date of birth, address, photograph, , language of question paper, category and subcategory of the candidate, along with name and address of the IIT-JEE Examination Centre allotted.

The admit cards will be sent by Speed Post to the address mentioned in the Application Form only to all those eligible candidates who have submitted valid Application Forms, complete in all respects and received at IITs within the stipulated period and are found to be eligible..

On receipt of the admit card, the candidate must examine the Admit Card . In case of any discrepancy, you should inform the issuing institute immediately. admit card must be carried to the examination centre as only candidates, having valid Admit cards, will be allowed to write the examination.

JEE office will not be responsible for any postal delay or irregularity resulting in non-delivery of the Admit Card. No duplicate admit card will be issued

Note : Please note that Admit Card must be received latest by March 15,

If the Admit Card is not received by March 15, , then the candidate can get his/her registration number and examination centre from the institute of your zone through phone (IVRS – Interactive Voice Response System) / Website. The candidate must then write his/her name, registration number and the examination centre on two identical halves of an A4-size paper, affix his/her photographs (same version of photograph which you have pasted in your Application Form) one on each half and sign on the bottom of the photographs, and then get this attested by the Head of your School / Institution last attended / gazetted officer / notary public.

Finally, the candidate must meet the IIT Representative with this paper on the day of examination (April 8, ) one hour before the commencement of the examination at the office of the Presiding Officer of the examination centre. The IIT Representative will retain one half and give the other half back to you. After the entire process, the candidate will be allowed to write the examination provisionally.

IIT JEE Eligibility Criteria

The candidates should have passed the Final Examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/State Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education CBSE, New Delhi, Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi etc.

The candidates should have passed 3 or 4-year Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education.

The candidates, who qualify Screening Test of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), are qualified to appear in the Main Examination.

IIT JEE Eligibility Criteria for appearing in IIT JEE and admission into 1st semester, 1st year degree program of IITs, IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad is described below.

IIT JEE Eligibility Criteria For General and OBC Category

Candidates whose Date of Birth falls on or after October 1, 1986 are eligible to appear in IIT JEE .There is 5 year relaxation available for reserved category candidates i.e. SC, ST and PD category candidates.

IIT JEE Educational Qualification

Candidates who have passed qualifying examination on or after October 1, 2009 are eligible to appear for IIT JEE . Candidates appearing in qualifying exam in are also eligible to apply.

IIT JEE Courses Offered

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Institute of Technology - Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU) and Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad offers various Under Graduate Courses in Sciences, Engineering and Technology.

IIT JEE Exam Pattern

IIT JEE is a 2 paper examination; i.e. IIT JEE Paper I and IIT JEE Paper II. Both paper consists of three different sections; viz; Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The duration of each paper is 3 hours.

Both paper in IIT JEE are objective type i.e. multiple choice type. The correct response for each questions are to be marked a machine readable answer sheet called ORS – Optical Response Sheet. The test takers need to darken the bubble against correct answers using HB Pencil.
In some section of IIT JEE negative marks are awarded for wrongly marked answers.

IIT JEE Question Paper Language

IIT JEE offered in two languages – English and Hindi. Candidates need to choose language option during application for filling process. Request for change in language not entertained at later stage.

Choice of Font of Question Paper

Candidates who have poor vision can ask to IIT JEE authority for IIT JEE Question Paper with bigger font. All such candidate must send a request letter addressed to the Chairman, IIT JEE of the respective zones along with the application form.

IIT JEE Syllabus

IIT JEE Examination follows the common minimum Syllabus of Class 11th and Class 12th standard in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. For Design and Architecture courses Aptitude Test is conducted for only those candidates who wish to study Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) courses. When you enter the world of psychology, no student of psychology can escape hearing statements like, “Oh, so you can read my mind!” or “I need to be careful about what I say in front of you.” Psychology is not about reading minds. It is a discipline that is defined as “the study of human and animal behaviour.” In order to enter this sphere, you need to have a genuine interest in human behaviour and have to develop your observational skills, if not already prevalent.

Psychology departments always stand out no matter which space they occupy. People will peep in, but will always be wary of entering this space. According to Shalini Masih, counsellor at New Delhi’s Satyawati College, “Psychology is very time consuming and there is a stigma attached to being a psychologist as well.” Students of psychology usually end up being lost in a world of their own, getting into the depths of their self and others. Readings and assignments not only provide you insight into behaviour but also help in developing an understanding into the connection between the mind and body.

How it all began
The first department of psychology in India was established at Calcutta University as early as 1915 when Sigmund Freud was busy understanding the psyche in the Victorian society. Though many would have heard of Freud, not many would be aware of our own Girindrasekhar Bose, an early 20th century South Asian psychoanalyst who was also the first president of the Indian Psychoanalytic Society in 1922. An even lesser known fact is that Bose and Freud carried on a twenty-year dialogue through letters. When Bose submitted his doctoral thesis in 1921, entitled ‘Concept of Repression,’ he blended Hindu thought with Freudian concepts.

The Indian Psychological Association got established in 1924 and the Indian Journal of Psychology was founded in 1926, much ahead of many countries around the world. Bose has found reflection through the writings of Christiane Hartnack, Amit Ranjan Basu, Ashis Nandy, Sudhir Kakar and Mansi Kumar amongst many others. In spite of the early beginning in the Indian context, psychology is still trying to find its grounding and establish roots as a discipline and profession to be pursued actively.

Levels of study

Psychology is introduced at school levels in India. However, an in depth study of the subject takes strong roots only at the undergraduation level. You would be able to opt for a BA (Hons) in psychology, a BSc in psychology or a BA in psychology depending on the institution you opt to study. Remember, only with a high percentage in schooling will gain entry. You end up studying a range of subjects including general psychology, statistics, systems, abnormal behaviour, physiological psychology, and applied psychology to name a few. You will be required to do practicals as part of each course, as well. Conducting a memory test or a personality test or an aptitude test on yourself and on subjects would not remain alien to a student of psychology for long.

When you enter this arena you need to remember that a BA degree is normally not enough and most people end up doing at least a master’s after completing their undergraduation. This again depends on the institute you choose to study in but is much more structured and a deeper. A minimum of 55% in your undergraduation is required to apply, along with sitting for an entrance test, group discussion and an interview. Readings and assignments and ongoing research become a part of your world. You would have to choose a specialization in your second year of MA ranging from child psychology, organizational behaviour, social psychology and clinical psychology to name some of the most frequently available options. However, this didn’t deter Shah from staying in the subject and he went on to receive the Richmond Fellowship and worked in the field of psychosocial rehabilitation. It was demanding work, especially at the emotional level. After six years of work experience, he found himself earning only Rs. 15,000-20,000 a month, leaving him feeling a little disillusioned. He opted to enter the corporate world and use the skills he learned while studying organizational behaviour. Shah has a piece of advice for people entering the field of psychology echoed in Masih’s words, “They should have the passion and they should also have the patience. You need to think about your orientation and mentors seriously, there are very good courses available abroad. Just remember psychology is not a cake walk.”

oth degree and diploma are recognitions conferred to a person on the successful completion of an educational course. However, there are a lot of differences between the two and neither can be used in place of the other.

To understand the difference between a degree and a diploma, we first need to know what a university is, what AICTE is, and the role of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in India.

University

A university is an institution of higher education and research, which grants academic degrees in a number of courses.

UGC

UGC stands for the University Grants commission. The UGC was established in November 1956 as a statutory body of the Government of India for the coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of university education in India. All cases pertaining to the allocation of grants-in-aid from publicFUNDS to the Central Universities and other Universities and Institutions of higher learning might be referred to the University Grants Commission.

AICTE

What UGC is to universities, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is to private institutes that impart technical education. The body works towards qualitative improvement of technical education, and towards implementation and proper maintenance of norms and standards in technical education system.

Degree

What is a degree?

The duration of a degree course is usually 3 to 4 years and the emphasis is on academics. For example, B.Com (H) is a 3-year degree course that deals with subjects like accountancy, economics and business studies; B.Tech is a 4-year degree course that teaches subjects like physics, chemistry and maths, and includes the subject one plans to major in, an MBBS is a 5 and half year long degree that teaches the general aspects of medicine.

Who can confer a degree?

Only a university can confer a degree. To pursue higher education, only a degree from a UGC approved university is accepted. AICTE approved private institutes are affiliated to UGC approved universities. In case a person graduates from an AICTE approved private institute affiliated to a UGC approved university, he still gets the degree of the university.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed in a way that it provides an overview of many subjects, other than the one the student may be interested in. For example, in an engineering degree course for Computer Science, the first year focuses on subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanics, and Engineering Drawing apart from languages like C and COBOL; subsequent years have subjects like Digital Electronics andANALOG Electronics. Typically, there is one subject that you major in, called the specialization whereas other subjects are called electives.

Scope

After a degree course, you can go for higher education to better your skills or look for a job in your field. For example, after a B.Com (H) degree, you can go for a job in accounting orFINANCE, or go for an MBA or M.Com.

What is a Diploma?

A diploma course is a short term course (usually 1 to 2 years in duration) that focuses on training a person in a particular field.

Who can confer a diploma?

An institute, a polytechnic or even a university can offer a diploma course. There is no need for the institute or the university to be UGC or AICTE approved.

Curriculum

The course is designed in a way such that the person gets basic theoretical knowledge about the course, apart from the extensive practical training needed in the job industry. For this purpose, a lot of diploma courses have on-the-job training and apprenticeship and focus more on practical exams. For example, a diploma in Computers involves subjects centred on programming languages and computer hardware only.

Scope

After a diploma, you can either enrol in a bachelor degree course or look for jobs. For example, in universities like Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, you can enrol in B.Tech in Computer Science, after you complete your diploma course. Psychology

Psychology is the study of mental processes and a person’s behaviour. A professional practitioner, who practices psychology, is known as a psychologist. About JSTS (Junior Science Talent Search) Exam:

JSTS is conducted by Science Branch, Directorate of Education, Delhi. Junior Science Talent Search Examination eligible for those students who are studying in Delhi/ New Delhi/ under NCT Delhi in class IX standard can participate in this, only from their school, not individually. Students who have scored minimum 65% marks or above in class VIII are eligible for JSTS examination.

The Junior Science Talent Search Examination (JSTS) is conducted separately in each state and union territories of India by the respective state education departments. It is based on the lines of the National Talent Search Scheme Examination (NTSE)/ National level Science Talent Search Exam (NSTSE). The first round of JSTS is written test.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any student of recognized school studying in Class IX in Govt. /Govt. Aided /Public /KV /Navodaya /NDMC and must have secured 65% marks in class VIII.

Pattern of Exam:

The written test is conducted in two parts - Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). All questions are multiple choice questions.

The first part-Mental Ability Test is a 50 min test which tests the candidates’ knowledge of mental ability (GK, Current affairs & Reasoning). It is a 50 marks paper of 50 questions. There is no negative marking.

Application form should be submitted in triplicate at the Science Branch by the Head of School (HOS) duly attested by HOS on working days in between 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Note:

H.O.S. may note caste category cannot be changed after the submission of Application forms.
Percentage of marks will be calculated as per grading system.
Application Performa should be submitted in triplicate duly attested by HOS.

Declaration of Result:

The first round results come out usually in mid April and are uploaded at the Directorate of Education website under public Circulars (edudel.nic.in). There are about 150-155 students selected in the first level. For the second level candidates have to give an interview held usually in July.

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is an on-going National Program of Fellowship in Basic Sciences, initiated and funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to attract exceptionally highly motivated students for pursuing basic science courses and research career in science.

The objective of the program is to identify students with talent and aptitude for research; help them realize their academic potential; encourage them to take up research careers in Science, and ensure the growth of the best scientific minds for research and development in the country.

The advertisement for the KVPY Fellowship appears in all the national dailies normally on the Technology Day (May 11) and the Second Sunday of July every year.

Selection of the students is made from those studying in XI standard to 1st year of any undergraduate Program in Basic Sciences namely B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology having aptitude for scientific research. Special groups / Committees are set up at IISc to screen the applications and conduct an aptitude test at various centres in the country. Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-listed students are called for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure. For receiving a fellowship, both aptitude test and interview marks are considered.

Generous fellowships are provided up to the pre-Ph.D. level to the selected KVPY Fellows.

ABOUT KVPY

The "Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana" (KVPY) is a program started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to encourage students who are studying Basic Sciences to take up research career in Science. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented and motivated students to pursue career in research.

This program aims to assist the students to realize their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is groomed for research and development in the country. Generous fellowship and contingency grant are provided to the selected KVPY Fellows up to the pre Ph.D. level or 5 years whichever is earlier. In addition, summer camps for the KVPY Fellows are organized in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.

The Department of Science and Technology, the nodal agency of the Government has entrusted the overall responsibility for organizing and running the KVPY Program to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and set up a Management Committee and a National Advisory Committee (NAC) for overseeing its implementation. A core committee looks after both the day-to-day and academic aspects of the KVPY Program.

ELIGIBILITY

The KVPY Fellowships are given to Indian Nationals only to Study in India (Students holding PIO, OCI Card and students intending to pursue/pursing under graduate program under Distance Education scheme/correspondence course of any university are not eligible to apply).

Students enrolled in an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences, that is, B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Materials Science or Environmental Science.

Stream SA: Students enrolled in XI Standard (Science Subjects) during the academic year 2014-15 and having secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the X Standard Board examination. The fellowship of the students selected under this stream will be activated only if they join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) in the academic year 2016-2017 after having secured a minimum of 60% (50%for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects in the XII standard/(+2) Board Examination. During the interim period of one year they will be invited for Regional /National (Vijyoshi) Science Camp and their travel and other related expenses will be met by KVPY.

Stream SX: Students enrolled in XII Standard/ (+2) (Science subjects) during the academic year 2014–15 and aspiring to join undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. for the session 2015–16 provided they have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the X Standard Board Examination and a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the XII standard Board Examination.

Students in their 2nd year of study in Cambridge International Examination Board and aspiring to join an UG program (viz. B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.)in Basic Sciences namely Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology in the Academic year 2015-2016 are eligible to apply provided they have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the X Standard Board Examination. They must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the XII standard Board Examination before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

Stream SB: Students enrolled in the 1st year of undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. during the academic year 2014–15 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Mathematics) in the XII Standard Board Examination. In the 1st year final examination of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./M.S. they must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

Empowerment initiative in the KVPY Fellowship Program:

A certain number of additional fellowships exclusively for the students belonging to SC/ST community under the various streams as stated above will be operated.
A certain number of fellowships under various streams as stated above will be operated exclusively for students under the category of Persons With Disability (Physically and Visually Challenged).

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Aptitude Test: After scrutiny of application forms and meeting the eligibility criteria for various streams, all eligible students will be called for a written aptitude test conducted both in Hindi and English at different centers across the country on Sunday, the 2nd November 2014. The details of the venue of the aptitude test for the eligible students and their seat number will be published in the KVPY website during the second week of October 2014.

- Students who have applied online may download the admit card for the aptitude test from the website from the second week of October 2014.
- For students who have applied with a hard copy, admit card will be sent by speed post.
Interview: Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-listed students will be asked to appear for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure.

Technothlon is an international school championship organized by the student fraternity of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. Technothlon began its journey in 2004 with an aim to ‘Inspire Young Minds’. Starting on its journey with a participation of 200 students confined to the city of Guwahati, over the past 10 years Technothlon has expanded its reach to over 150 cities all over the nation and various centers abroad. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) was established by the Government of India in the year 1961 with a view to bringing about qualitative improvement in school education in the country. No sooner the Council was set up than it mounted a number of programmes in this direction. One such programme was to identify and nurture the talented students. This programme took up the shape of a scheme called National Science Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS) in the year 1963 which provided for the identification of talented students and awarding them with scholarships. During the first year of the implementation of the scheme, it was confined to the Union Territory of Delhi wherein only 10 scholarships were awarded to the Class XI students.

It was renamed as National Talent Search Scheme (NTSS). Since the education system in the country was undergoing a change, the scheme was made open to the students of Classes X, XI and XII and separate examinations were conducted for each class. The number of scholarships was raised to 500. The selection procedure was also changed. Now the candidates were subjected to two objective type written tests namely the Mental Ability Test (MAT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). A stipulated number of candidates qualifying these two tests were subjected to face-to-face interview. The final awards were made on the basis of composite scores obtained in the MAT, the SAT and the interview.

Yet another change in the scheme was made in the year 2006 wherein the NTS examination was held at the end of Class VIII. From the year 2008 examination, a provision of 3 per cent reservation has been made for physically challenged students.

From the year 2012-13

NTSE will be conducted for Class X students

The examination will consist of Mental Ability Test(MAT) and Scholastic Ability Test(SAT)

Quota for State/UT will be computed proportionally on the basis of students enrolment
in Class IX and X

The amount of scholarship will be Rs. 500/- per month for all the students studying
in Class XI onwards(irrespective of class/course) except for Ph.D., wherein it is paid as per UGC norms.

The scholarships under the present scheme are awarded to the candidates for pursuing courses in sciences and social sciences up to doctoral level and in professional courses like medicine and engineering up to second-degree level subject to the fulfilment of the conditions provided in this brochure.

The Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO), initiated in the year of 2000 by Indonesia,is an annual international physics competition devoted to students of secondary schools in Asia region. It is usually held in late April or early May in which more than twenty countries and regions have participated in the competition since its beginning. Its conduction exactly follows that of International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) except each participating country can send eight contestants at most instead of five in IPhO. The APhO has not only greatly promoted the quality of physics education in Asia region, but also provide an additional opportunityand opened an extra window for bright young students to widen their view over the outside world

THE SYLLABUS

（the same as those described in the International Physics Olympiads）

General

(a) The extensive use of the calculus (differentiation and integration) and the use of complex numbers or solving differential
equations should not be required to solve the theoretical and practical problems.

(b) Questions may contain concepts and phenomena not contained in the Syllabus but sufficient information must be given in
　the questions so that candidates without previous knowledge of these topics would not be at a disadvantage.

(c) Sophisticated practical equipment likely to be unfamiliar to the candidates should not dominate a problem. If such devices
　are used then careful instructions must be given to the candidates.

(d) The original texts of the problems have to be set in the SI units.

A. Theoretical Part

The first column contains the main entries while the second column contains comments and remarks if necessary.

1. Mechanics

(a) Foundation of kinematics of a point mass.	Vector description of the position of the point mass, velocity and acceleration as vectors.
(b) Newton's laws, inertial systems.	Problems may be set on changing mass.
(c) Closed and open systems, momentum and energy, work, power.
(d) Conservation of energy, conservation of linear momentum, impulse.
(e) Elastic forces, frictional forces, the law of gravitation, potential energy and work in a gravitational field.	Hooke's law, coefficient of friction (F/R = const), frictional forces static and kinetic, choice of zero of potential energy.
(f) Centripetal acceleration, Kepler's laws

2. Mechanics of Rigid Bodies

(a) Statics, center of mass, torque.	Couples, conditions of equilibrium of bodies.
(b) Motion of rigid bodies, translation, rotation, angular velocity, angular acceleration, conservation of angular momentum.	Conservation of angular momentum about fixed axis only
(c) External and internal forces, equation of motion of a rigid body around the fixed axis, moment of inertia, kinetic energy of a rotating body.	Parallel axes theorem (Steiner's theorem), additivity of the moment of inertia.
(d) Accelerated reference systems, inertial forces.	Knowledge of the Coriolis force formula is not require

3. Hydromechanics

No specific questions will be set on this but students would be expected to know the elementary concepts of pressure, buoyancy and the continuity law.

4. Thermodynamics and Molecular Physics

(a) Internal energy, work and heat, first and second laws of thermodynamics.	Thermal equilibrium, quantities depending on state and quantities depending on process.
(b) Model of a perfect gas, pressure and molecular kinetic energy, Avogadro's number, equation of state of a perfect gas, absolute temperature.	Also molecular approach to such simple phenomena in liquids and solids as boiling, melting etc
(c) Work done by an expanding gas limited to isothermal and adiabatic processes.	Proof of the equation of the adiabatic process is not required.
(d) The Carnot cycle, thermodynamic efficiency, reversible and irreversible processes, entropy(statistical approach), Boltzmann factor.	Entropy as a path independent function, entropy changes and reversibility, quasistatic processes.

5. Oscillations and waves

(a) Harmonic oscillations, equation of harmonic oscillation.	Solution of the equation for harmonic motion, attenuation and resonance - qualitatively.
(b) Harmonic waves, propagation of waves, transverse and longitudinal waves, linear polarization, the classical Doppler effect, sound waves.	Displacement in a progressive wave and understanding of graphical representation of the wave, measurements of velocity of sound and light, Doppler effect in one dimension only, propagation of waves in homogeneous and isotropic media, reflection and refraction, Fermat's principle.
(c) Superposition of harmonic waves, coherent waves, interference, beats, standing waves.	Realization that intensity of wave is proportional to the square of its amplitude. Fourier analysis is no required but candidates should have some understanding that complex waves can be made from addition of simple sinusoidal waves of different frequencies. Interference due to thin films and other simple systems (final formulae are not required), superposition of waves from secondary sources (diffraction)

6. Electric Charge and Electric Field

(a) Conservation of charge, Coulomb's law.
(b) Electric field, potential, Gauss' law.	Gauss' law confined to simple symmetric systems like sphere, cylinder, plate etc., electric dipole moment.
(c) Capacitors, capacitance, dielectric constant, energy density of electric field.

7. Current and Magnetic Field

(a) Current, resistance, internal resistance of source, Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's laws, work and power of direct and alternating currents, Joule's law.	Simple cases of circuits containing non-ohmic devices with known V-I characteristics.
(b) Magnetic field (B) of a current, current in a magnetic field, Lorentz force.	Particles in a magnetic field, simple applications like cyclotron, magnetic dipole moment
(c) Ampere's law.	Magnetic field of simple symmetric systems like straight wire, circular loop and long solenoid
(d) Law of electromagnetic induction, magnetic flux, Lenz's law, self-induction, inductance, permeability, energy density of magnetic field.
(e) Alternating current, resistors, inductors and capacitors in AC-circuits, voltage and current(parallel and series) resonances.	Simple AC-circuits, time constants, final formulae for parameters of concrete resonance circuits are not required.

8. Electromagnetic waves

(a) Oscillatory circuit, frequency of oscillations, generation by feedback and resonance.
(b) Wave optics, diffraction from one and two slits, diffraction grating, resolving power of a grating, Bragg reflection.
(c) Dispersion and diffraction spectra, line spectra of gases.
(d) Electromagnetic waves as transverse, waves polarization by reflection, polarizers.	Superposition of polarized waves.
(e) Resolving power of imaging systems.
(f) Black body, Stefan-Boltzmann law.	Planck's formula is not required

9. Quantum Physics

(a) Photoelectric effect, energy and impulse of the photon.	Einstein's formula is required
(b) De Broglie wavelength, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.

10. Relativity

(a) Principle of relativity, addition of velocities, relativistic Doppler effect.

(b) Relativistic equation of motion, momentum, energy, relation between energy and mass, conservation of energy and
momentum.

11. Matter

(a) Simple applications of the Bragg equation.

(b) Energy levels of atoms and molecules (qualitatively), emission, absorption, spectrum of hydrogen-like atoms.

(c) Energy levels of nuclei (qualitatively), alpha-, beta- and gamma-decays, absorption of radiation, half-life and exponential
decay, components of nuclei, mass defect, nuclear reactions

B. Practical Part

The Theoretical Part of the Syllabus provides the basis for all the experimental problems. The experimental problems given in the experimental contest should contain measurements.

Additional requirements:

Candidates must be aware that instruments affect measurements.
Knowledge of the most common experimental techniques for measuring physical quantities mentioned in Part A.
Knowledge of commonly used simple laboratory instruments and devices such as calipers, thermometers, simple volt-, ohm- and ammeters, potentiometers, diodes, transistors, simple optical devices and so on.
Ability to use, with the help of proper instruction, some sophisticated instruments and devices such as double-beam oscilloscope, counter, ratemeter, signal and function generators, analog-to-digital converter connected to a computer, amplifier, integrator, differentiator, power supply, universal (analog and digital) volt-, ohm- and ammeters.
Proper identification of error sources and estimation of their influence on the final result(s).
Absolute and relative errors, accuracy of measuring instruments, error of a single measurement, error of a series of measurements, error of a quantity given as a function of measured quantities.
Transformation of dependence to the linear form by appropriate choice of variables and fitting a straight line to experimental points.
Proper use of the graph paper with different scales (for example polar and logarithmic papers).
Correct rounding off and expressing the final result(s) and error(s) with correct number of significant digits.
Standard knowledge of safety in laboratory work. (Nevertheless, if the experimental set-up contains any safety hazards the appropriate warnings should be included into the text of the problem.)

CBSE Group Mathematical Olympiad

CBSE Group Mathematical Olympiad

CBSE is going to conduct Group Mathematical Olympiad on December 01, 2013. Successful candidates will be sent to International Mathematical Olympiad. A maximum number of 30 students from CBSE group are selected strictly in order of merit to participate in Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) conducted by National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM). Selection at National level leads to participation at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN CBSE GROUP MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD

a) Any student studying in class XII, XI, X or IX can participate in the competition. However, there will be a common question paper for all participants. Bright students from class VIII may also appear.

b) A school can sponsor maximum five students for the competition.

c) The five students should be selected strictly on the basis of a screening test conducted by the school itself.

DATE OF EXAMINATION

a) CBSE Group Mathematical Olympiad 2013 will be held on Sunday, 1st December, 2013 at the centre notified at the end of this folder.

b) The duration of the examination will be 3 hours (1:00 pm to 4:00 pm)

FEE TO BE PAID

Every sponsored candidate shall remit a sum of Rs. 60/- as entry fee for the examination. The fee of the candidates should be forwarded by the principal of the participating school to the venue principal (centre) in the form of demand draft drawn in favour of the principal of the venue school. The list of venue schools (state coordinators) appears at the end of this folder.

LAST DATE FOR APPLYING

The fee along with desired information about the selected students should reach the state coordinator by 20th October, 2013. In no case should the fee or documents be sent to the Board.HOW TO APPLY?

a) The head of the participating schools will forward the names of the selected students to the state coordinator (venue school) nominated by the Board

b) The information about the selected students including name, father’s name, date of birth, school address, class, residential address, total marks obtained in the class one lower than in which he/she is studying, should be sent to the state coordinator along with the fee before the last date.

c) The selected candidates should be bonafide students of the school/institution

d) The admit card to be issued by the participating school should have complete information about the students.

e) The admit card should also carry the signature of the student and his/her latest photograph duly attested by the principal.

VENUE FOR THE EXAMINATION

a) The Group Mathematical Olympiad will be held at one or two venues in each state as listed in the folder.

b) Every candidate is required to appear at the venue in his/her state only. No change of venue for the examination will be admissible.

c) Every candidate has to bear the expenditure for his/her transport, board and lodging etc.

d) In case of candidates studying in gulf schools, the schools will have to make arrangement for candidates to appear at the identified centre.

e) The state coordinator will inform all the participating schools about the roll nos. of the candidates, exact venue, date of examination, time of examination and the other details

MEDIUM OF EXAMINATION

The question paper will be made available in English medium. The candidates are required to answer in English only.

SYLLABUS AND PATTERN OF EXAMINATION

There is no specific syllabus for the examination. Areas of school mathematics such as algebra, geometry, number theory, combinatorics etc. are to be prepared for the test. The question paper will consist of 6-7 questions of non-routine nature.

CONDUCT OF GMO

a) The coordinator will act as the Centre Superintendent. For the examination at his/her centre. He/she will appoint invigilators as per CBSE examination norms.

b) In addition to invigilators the Centre Superintendent may appoint one clerk/peon for the conduct of the examination.

QUESTION PAPER

a) The question papers will be sent by CBSE to the state/regional coordinator directly in advance.

b) The coordinator shall keep the sealed paper in his/her safe custody till the commencement of examination. The sealed packets containing the question paper should be opened only half an hour before the start of examination.

MERIT LIST

The answer sheets of candidates who appear in CBSE GMO will be evaluated at CBSE Headquarters. CBSE will select a maximum of 30 candidates strictly in order of merit. Only the selected candidates will be informed about the result and will be eligible to appear in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad conducted by NBHM. The name of the selected candidates will be communicated to respective schools as well as NBHM for further necessary action. The result will also be available at cbseacademic.in.

The National Astronomy Olympiad Program is designed to encourage students with good foundations in Physics and Mathematics and an interest in Astronomy to pursue further studies in this field. It involves a five stage process leading to participation of Indian team in International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA).

Stages

The astronomy Olympiad program follows the following 5 stages:

Stage I: National Standard Examination in Astronomy (NSEA).
Stage II: Indian National Astronomy Olympiad (INAO),
Stage III: Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in astronomy,
Stage IV: Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT) for IOAA,
Stage V: International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA).

Stage 1 is entirely the responsibility of IAPT. All the remaining stages are organized by HBCSE.

The detailed information about eligibility and structure of the stages is given below:

Stage I: National Standard Examination in Astronomy (NSEA)

NSEA is the first stage of selection of students in the astronomy Olympiad Programme which is organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). Every student aspiring to go through successive stages of the programme must enroll for NSEA. NSEA will be held at a large number of centres in the country.

Date of NSEA 2014 : 23 November 2013 (Sunday)

Time of NSEA 2014: 03:00 pm to 05:00 pm

Last Date for Enrollment for NSEA: 15^th September 2014

Eligibility:

All Indian students who are born on or after January 1, 1995 and, in addition, are in Class XII or lower as of November 30, 2014, are eligible to appear for NSEA 2014 – 2015. If they qualify in the NSEA they will be eligible for subsequent stages leading to participation in International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics 2014.

It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the eligibility criteria are satisfied. In case at any stage of the programme it is found that the student does not satisfy the eligibility criteria, he/she may be disqualified from the program.

Syllabus:

The syllabus for NSEA is broadly equivalent to the senior secondary level (upto Class XII) of CBSE.

There will be greater emphasis on physics and mathematics (calculus not expected) and elementary astronomy.

This is only a rough guideline, and there is no detailed syllabus given for NSEA.

Question Paper:

NSEA emphasizes comprehension of the subject, not rote memory. Its format will be as follows:

The question paper will consist of 80 multiple choice questions, each with only one of the four options correct.

Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education is the nodal centre of the country for Olympiad programmes in mathematics and sciences including astronomy. The programmes aim at promoting excellence in science and mathematics among pre-university students.

The Mathematics Olympiad is conducted under the aegis of the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM).

From the Olympiad year beginning August 2008, a new integrated National Steering Committee for science and astronomy Olympiads has been overseeing the entire activity in these subjects. The subjects includes physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and junior science. The Olympiad programmes in physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy (junior and senior level) and junior science are a five stage process for each subject separately. The first stage for each subject is organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). All the remaining stages are organized by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE).

The programme is financially supported by Government of India, in particular, by Board of Nuclear Sciences (Department of Atomic Energy), Department of Science and Technology, Department of Space and Ministry of Human Resource Development.
