Michael Lynch, Amateur Naturalist and Photographer

Finding nature close to home and afield. Seeking inspiration from area native plant communities and enjoying the beauty of the natural world at the same time. What started as an effort to find out what the prairie really looked like turns into an exploration of nature and the environment. Michael has found that exploring the Twin Cities diverse landscapes is a great source of ideas for the garden and helps to understand the history and future of Minnesota's environment. Depletion of natural habitat is the main reason the monarch migration has been declared an endangered phenomena. Milkweed is the only monarch caterpillar host plant. Although we are at the tail end of milkweed seed collection time, we are requesting milkweed seeds donations to initiate a new program.

Common milkweed, the favored milkweed of monarchs here in Minnesota, is still in a stage of pods opening and releasing seeds. The seeds would go to the Minneapolis Monarch Festival and the Wild Ones National Monarch Committee Initiative.

The milkweed seeds from any Minnesota native species, can be brought to the next Wild Ones meeting at the Wood Lake Nature Center, Richfield on Tuesday, November 20th 6:30-8:45 pm.

How To Collect and Store Milkweed Seeds
Collect milkweed seeds after the first frost. Harvest only mature seeds. It is easiest to collect in the pod itself. It is essential to collect only mature seeds. If the pod is open or opens easily with a squeeze and the seeds are dark brown, the seeds are ready for harvest. Seeds well into the process of browning and hardening will germinate when planted the next season. Pods that do not open easily and with light colored seeds, are immature and will not germinate.

Dry collected pods and seeds in an open area with good air circulation. Once the pods are thoroughly dry, the seeds can be separated from the silky parachute-like material (coma) by hand. One separation method is to put seeds still attached to the coma in a paper bag. Vigorously shake the bag to separate the seeds from the coma and then cut a small hole in bottom corner of the bag and shake out the seeds. Store dried seeds in a cool, dry place such as in a container in the fridge.

Invasive plants or weeds continue to spread across the continent. Consequently,
Minnesota is fast becoming a melting pot of weed species. Many of these plants were
accidentally introduced to our landscape, but some have been purposefully imported.

This talk will explain how these weeds have cost the United States, both ecologically
and economically and what you as gardeners can do about it.
MINNEAPOLIS MONARCH FESTIVAL
Saturday, September 8th, 10am - 4pm
The Nokomis Naturescape will share the Monarch Festival HABITAT TENT with Wild Ones Twin Cities and Twin Cities Audubon.
We will work closely with the Monarch Lab tent and the native plant vendors.
There will be game activities to initiate more interest in coming to the habitat tent.

Audubon is leading 2 habitat gardening tours.
We will have tools and assignments to assist volunteers in fielding festival goer general questions,
to encourage native plant gardening and volunteering at NN.

MONARCH LAB TENT
Naturescape gardeners and Wild Ones members are encouraged to work with the Monarch Lab tent to escort festival attendees
into the garden(we've created specific spots) and release monarchs. At the Monarch lab tent, they will learn about monarch biology.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquaint people with native plants and their unique benefits.
Carol Kuechler, a Naturescape volunteer has offered to be the garden monarch release team leader.
We'll have a short general script that pertains to habitat gardening and a release plan.

MONARCH FESTIVAL VOLUNTEER INFO
Invasive plants or weeds continue to spread across the continent. Consequently,
Minnesota is fast becoming a melting pot of weed species. Many of these plants were
accidentally introduced to our landscape, but some have been purposefully imported.

This talk will explain how these weeds have cost the United States, both ecologically

The Gardens: Lynn and Ted Steiner have lived in their 115-year-old farmhouse since 1985. They began installing gardens and landscaping soon after moving in and it remains an ongoing process. There are several mixed borders around the house, each containing a mix of native and nonnative perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees. There is a raised-bed vegetable garden that also includes some herbs and small fruits. The prairie restoration/reconstruction is just under an acre in size. It was seeded in fall 2005 and was burned this spring. Lynn and Ted have been renovating their woodland since 2004, removing invasives, installing paths, and incorporating new plants. Their newest project is a savanna restoration started in spring 2011. It was burned for the first time this spring.

Lynn Steiner, horticulturist, speaker, photographer and author of several beautiful and informative books on using native plants in gardens and landscapes, will guide us though her own yard and gardens. Lynn’s book Landscaping with Native Plants of Minnesota is a feast for the mind and soul with 192 pages and more than 320 color photographs. Lynn is a national honorary director of Wild Ones and writes the column on native plants in “Northern Gardener” magazine. Lynn will have autographed copies of 4 of her books available for purchase. Free and open to the public

Saturday June 2nd 11 am - 1 pm
Hannah Texler a regional ecologist with the DNR will guide all three tours.

Location: Horton Park, St. Paul
The tour will begin at Horton Park in St. Paul, at the corner of Hamline and Englewood, where there is plenty of on-street parking. From there you may walk or drive to the residential gardens a few blocks away.

The Gardens:
Hannah Texler and Stephanie Hankerson established community wildflower gardens at Horton Park in 2000 with the support of the city and the help of neighbors and volunteers, and still maintain them today.

There are three gardens; one each of woodland, oak savanna and a very small prairie garden. The park also contains new plantings of over 70 trees and shrubs serving as a mini-arboretum.

The private gardens at 1379 Lafond Avenue and the two houses to the west include three adjacent boulevard gardens with their own personalities – one all native prairie plants under a new bur oak, and the other two a mix of native and non-native species.

Two of the homes have back yards that have replaced all lawn with gardens. The tour will include Hannah and Mike’s back yard, which is a mix of a large prairie garden, small shade gardens, a rain garden, and a vegetable garden, with all plants in the yard either native or edible.

Start or end your tour with a stop at The Landscape Revival: Native Plant Expo and Market takes place just 3 miles away from 9 am - 3pm. This is a great opportunity to learn about and buy native plants from over 20 participating organizations (including Wild Ones and 11 native plant retailers)

The best time of year to garden - temperature is pleasant, no bugs, and weeds are highly visible and easy to pull. The gardens look fresh and healthy with spring blooms. Really helps us all year long if we get a jump on the weeds when they are wee ones.

Jacob's Ladder Polemonium reptans now in bloom at the Naturescape. It thrives in the Lakeside garden.
