Born and raised in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif., I spent my early adulthood on Cape Cod, Mass. Busy raising four kids as a single mom in Spokane, Wash., it wasn't until my last one was a senior in high school in 2006 that I discovered a talent waiting to be expressed.

By then I was living in Colorado Springs and hiking the Rockies, so mountain scenes and aspen forests inspired my early efforts.

I returned to my hometown of Carmel in the summer of 2007, sharing gallery space in a quaint courtyard gazebo. I began painting coastal scenes, Carmel landmarks and California missions. Since moving to Crescent City in December 2007 with my husband, Richard, I've focused on the incredible beauty of the rugged Northern California and Southern Oregon coastlines.

Besides Crescent Harbor Gallery, my work is also displayed in Carmel at Mountainsong Galleries and at Second Street Gallery in Bandon, Ore.

Laura Wiens

--Crescent Harbor Gallery's Demos are now held at noon at the Public Library

--February Demo Artist will be Elio Camacho.

Contact: Sally Houck, 541-265-6569, shouck@coastarts.org

Oregon Coast Council for the Arts (OCCA), the Regional Arts Council for the Oregon coast invites mid-career Oregon visual artists from Curry County to submit a proposal for the first exhibit in the Coastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase (COVAS) scheduled to open on Saturday, February 25, 2012.

As the regional arts council, OCCA wanted to expand exhibition space for its coastal visual artists. Information gathered from recent focus groups for strategic planning, conducted from Brookings to Astoria, indicated that many coastal artists feel isolated in their ability to exhibit broadly and have their work seen.

In the spring of 2011, OCCA received a capital improvement grant from the Ford Family Foundation to build a showcase at the Newport Visual Arts Center to exhibit the work of mid-career coastal Oregon visual artists. With the help of a bequest from a former Newport artist, Anna Lee Davis, a donation from the Nye Beach Merchants Association, and financial support from OCCA and the Oregon Arts Commission, the showcase has been installed.

A touch screen computer to show videos of the exhibiting artist’s work, studio and process, is located in a separate cabinet across from the showcase. The showcase and equipment will allow OCCA to expand its services to its coastal artists and to build a visual archive of coastal artists’ work over time.

Artists who meet the following criteria are invited to submit a proposal: The Artist must be a practicing visual artist currently producing works of art (for sale); must have been a full-time resident of Oregon for at least 36 months prior to the application deadline and, if chosen, remain a resident through the duration of the exhibit; must be 30 years of age or older at the time of application and show evidence, through appropriate documentation, of seven or more years of active professional participation in his/her medium; and may not be enrolled in a degree-seeking program, either part- or full-time.

The deadline for proposals is by postmark on January 23, 2012. An artist will be selected from the proposals submitted by the OCCA Exhibition Advisory Committee. All artists will be notified by email of the committee’s decision by January 31, 2012.

The exhibit will open on February 25 with an Opening Reception from 2pm to 4pm for the artist and a Dedication of the showcase and will be on display through March 31, 2012. Subsequent exhibits will feature artists from the other coastal counties in rotation. The showcase furthers OCCA’s mission to promote arts and culture, to develop arts programs that expand awareness and to assist artists.

Images of the showcase and information explaining how to submit a proposal is available on the OCCA website, www.coastarts.org. Click on the Visual Arts Center tab and then choose Exhibit Proposals from the drop down box. Artists interested in applying can PRINT A COPY OF THE CALL FOR PROPOSALS outlining the procedure for submission. Call 541-265-6569 or email shouck@costarts.org for more information
