Local artist Spencer Reynolds will be holding an art show at the Vista Pub on Saturday, May 25th, from 10 am to 4 pm. The show features original prints and artwork. Brookings Artist Sara Broderick was honored at the College of the Redwoods, Del Norte graduation, where she was named "Associate Faculty of the Year". "When I learned of this it was a complete surprise. This was voted by the faculty," Sara said. There are about 30 associate faculty in addition to the full time faculty.
Dean of Education Anita Jani presented the award to Sara with the following comments:
Soft spoken, focused, student-centered, this year’s recipient helps instill in students a sense of awe about the world around them by getting them to see through the eyes of an artist. She inspires her students to express themselves in every one of their assignments. She coaches, advises, guides – and sometimes cajoles her charges to put pencil, pastels, ink and paint to paper to create art. Their talent is nurtured and their skills are developed in the art classes associate art faculty Sara Broderick teaches at our campus.
Sara always has a sparkle in her eyes—and especially so when discussing her students’ works, which she always does with great enthusiasm. She continuously seeks ways to help students learn and then tirelessly organizes and sets up CRDN student art shows at our campus and also at galleries in Crescent City and Brookings to share their learning and talent with the greater community.
As she appreciates art, CRDN greatly appreciates Sara Broderick, our Associate Faculty of the Year. Thank you, Sara, for your commitment to the college and to your students.

Sara Broderick's annual show at Wright's is going on all of May. This year her theme is "Baby Critters". During the May Art Walk Sara demonstrated pastel painting. Sara teaches art at SOCC and College of the Redwoods, and offers Drop in Workshops on Friday afternoons at Wrights. Sara was recently named "Associate Faculty of the Year" at College of the Redwoods.

Welcome to another "Artistic License" at Brian Scott Gallery, to be held on the Fourth Friday of each month (except for May when the Azalea Festival is on the fourth Friday and Artistic License will be held the fifth Friday). Hostess Angela Ewing asked the audience, "Are we born artistically inclined? Do we inherit artistic tendencies? Do we acquire artistic skills? Can we learn artistic skills?" The correct answer came immediately - "All of the above."
Brindell Stubbs was inspired by one of Sandy Bonney's pastels called "Grandmother's Hands". You can see a series of hands by Sandy Bonney at Signatures/Brian Scott Gallery. Brindell read a moving piece she wrote about her last visit to her grandmother and holding her grandmother's hands for the final time.
Shirley Hyatt chose this seascape in oil, painted at Brookings by Elio Camacho, and related how this painting represents her great love of Brookings.
Richard Leathers read two of his poems that seem to be inspired by the same muse that inspired Lorraine Filippone when she created this colorful acrylic.
Al Boulley was impressed with this pair of lions by Kathleen Kresa and explained how it evokes his feelings about relationships.
Ann Boulley read an article, an essay, and a poem, all reflecting what she feels when she looks at this whimsical, mermaid in a bathtub with a glass of wine and a fat cat; an acrylic painting by Christina Olsen.
Angela Ewing read her entertaining essay about looking for real estate, an experience that she was reminded of by this photograph by Richard Leathers.

Cultural Coalition Awards Grants
CURRY COUNTY, OREGON – Members of the Curry County Cultural Coalition (CCCC) recently awarded grants totaling $7,431 to eleven organizations whose projects most closely fit the goals and guidelines of the Oregon Cultural Trust (OCT) and the CCCC.
The 2013 award recipients are:
OCT funds are generated through direct donations, the sales of Cultural Heritage license plates, and individual state tax credits. One third of the money that the OCT grants each year is distributed among 45 county and tribal cultural coalitions, based on population. These autonomous coalitions set their own priorities and re-grant OCT funds within their jurisdictions. The Curry County Cultural Coalition reviews applications annually and awards grants to groups that fulfill the OCT mission of increasing public participation in Oregon culture, giving priority to first-time applicants. Oregon Coast Council for the Arts welcomes Theresa Richards Chickering who will show her art quilts in the Coastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase in May. “Cut From A Different Cloth” will open Friday, May 3, at noon, with an Opening Reception from 5pm to 7pm.

Douglas County artist Theresa Chickering lives in Reedsport with her husband. She loves sharing quilting with others and has taught beginning quilting as well as more advanced classes about color, perspective and design. “Replicating water and the night sky hold a special appeal for me. Living on the beautiful Oregon coast in a rather rural area offers so many opportunities for subject matter for my work and the chance to study nature to improve my work. I don't have any formal art training or education. I've independently studied various aspects of art I feel will enhance my work, like perspective and color,” she states. “Trial and error has been a special teacher over the years.”
Theresa has been crafting and sewing since she was a child. Her mother encouraged her and her sister by making sure there were supplies for art, crafts and sewing and by enrolling them in 4-H.
Chickering began to quilt about 20 years ago after a friend showed her how to strip quilt. She made queen or king sized quilts for “everyone she knew,” she said. “Just like when I was a child trying every new craft, I keep trying new forms of quilting, all the new techniques and supplies…” Most of her work is organic and nature themed.
“My latest work is probably the area in which I'm the least comfortable. I like things to look very realistic, almost like a painting, so the more abstract and modern, the less sure I am about it. It is very freeing however. Once I learned to let myself be less concerned with all the rules I learned in quilting over the years and begin doing whatever it takes to make a piece ‘work,’ the easier it's becoming.”
Chickering has shown her work and received various viewers’ choice awards at many local quilt shows and has had work in the traveling Hoffman Challenge show. She has designed and self published several patterns through her pattern company, Fabric Tart Designs. In 2011, she was the featured artist for CDABA (Coastal Douglas Arts and Business Alliance).
In 2012 she was in two joint shows with other quilt artists, at Gallery By The Bay in North Bend and Tsunami Gallery in Gardiner. In 2012 the quilt art group that she belongs to, Oceans of Inspiration, presented a group show based on their various challenges at ECEC (Elkton Community Education Center) for CDABA.

The studio art quilts in this show represent a move from more traditional work with geometric shapes, 100% cotton, and hand appliqué to more contemporary techniques, materials, and methods including raw edge fusing, dyes and paints, and computer printed images.

Quilting is Chickering’s passion. Her exhibit of art quilts will be in the showcase through June 2. She says, “I can't imagine not always owning, touching and manipulating fabric. I love the colors, textures and comfort of all things cloth. I have to always be exploring and trying new forms of quilting.” A short video about Theresa can be viewed on the touch screen computer across from the showcase.

Oregon Coast Council for the Arts is the regional arts council for Curry, Coos, Lincoln, Tillamook, Clatsop and the coastal areas of Douglas and Lane. OCCA brings high quality art experiences to the coast. The Coastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase features mid-career artists and rotates through the coastal counties. The deadline for Azalea Festival Art Show entries is Saturday, April 27th at 4 PM. Registration will be held at Manley Art Center and Gallery on Friday, April 26th from 11 AM - 4 PM and again on Saturday, April 27th from 11 AM - 4 PM.

All artists (members of PBAA or not) are encouraged to enter art in the show. The maximum number of entries per person is 4. Entry fees for members are $5 per piece of art; for non-members, $10. The entry fee for youth is $3 per piece of art with the price of the first piece covered by the Pat Stewart Memorial Fund.
Late registrations will be accepted until Saturday, May 4th at 4 PM. If you register late, you will be charged an additional $5 per piece of art.
