Summer Art Camp for Kids in Brookings comes to a close today. A celebration of the summer achievements will last all of August at Manley Art Center. During the next Brookings Art Walk on August 14, several of the young artists will be docents at Manley and tell you all about their art pieces. You can visit Manley Art Center Tuesday through Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm.
Janeen Vick organized this children's art camp five years ago and has been teaching it with continued enthusiasm ever since. Many thanks to the community for making this year so successful. Vick said this year was especially challenging because of the number of children who wanted to attend but had no funding. She told them "Just come anyway and we will find a way to pay." She extends her thanks to "All the caring folks who just walked up and handed us their money."

This year Tony Parrish of the Stout Mountain Railway invited the kids to paint a boxcar representing the 2nd Saturday Art Walk and the Summer Art Camp.
Janeen Vick said, "The kids were so excited to be a part of this fun project that they couldn't be held back. I let them paint whatever they wanted, so the car is full of great designs and colorful work. This was difficult because we used acrylic paints for the train and we only teach with watercolor. The kids stepped up their talent and painted an amazing car." You can see the car at Stout Park next to Manley Art Center during the August 14 Art Walk.
The final lesson at camp was about using masking fluid to preserve the white of the watercolor paper as it is painted over. This is not as easy as it sounds. Here the artists use their fingers to rub off the mask after the painting is dry.
A special eraser is also useful for rubbing off the mask.
After the mask was removed the artists finished up their paintings...
Time to clean up the palettes and put them away for next time.

Dale Wells is having a show at Brian Scott Gallery this month - it's called "Cars, Flowers, Boats and Trains". Here Dale posed with a new creation. It a glass table top, painted on the bottom side of the glass. Next month at the August Art Walk, Dale Wells and Christina Olsen will set up in Art Walk Alley to paint more of these glass table tops.

Sara Broderick has a "must see" show of her art at the Chetco Library during the month of July.
Sara is both an artist and art instructor who currently teaches at SOCC and College of the Redwoods.
She teaches most two dimensional media.
Sara used her paintings at the library to discuss her painting techniques and styles.
Artists of the Month at Manley Art Center are the China Painting Group. China painting is a dying art, but you wouldn't know it looking at the work produced by these artists who meet at Manley every week to work on their creations. Multiple firings are required for this work and it requires considerable experience to produce a beautiful finished piece.
Ron Ranson, internationally known artist and teacher, demonstrated watercolor painting during the Art Walk, using only a hake brush and a rigger.
Ranson held a workshop at Manley this week where he shared his techniques for using the hake.
Geo Lent sold tickets to the Coastal Garden and Art Tour which is coming up on August 21. Tickets are available at Manley Art Center, Words and Pictures, Wrights, and other locations around Brookings, Crescent City, Gold Beach, and Port Orford. This is the fourth year for this popular tour put on by the Curry County Master Gardeners. It features a variety of coastal gardens with artists from Manley Art Center providing art demonstrations and offering art for sale in each garden. Tickets are $10 and the proceeds are used by the Master Gardeners to provide gardening education in our area.
At first we weren't sure if this Art Walk visitor came to Manley for the art or the food. After a few friendly nods he went about browsing and ignored the artists.
Have you heard that Brookings will hold an OKTOBERFEST this year? The festival will include all the traditional elements of Oktoberfest (Biergarten, great food, lots of music, etc.), but will also feature some 'unusual' events.
Most people don't know that Oktoberfest began in 1810 (exactly 200 years ago) as a Wedding Celebration. Brookings plans to recreate this WEDDING CEREMONY (between Prinz Ludwig of Bavaria and Prinzess Therese von Saxon), with all the costumes, flags and fanfare of the original festivities.
Also scheduled are:
5-day German Film Festival (October 6-10, at the Redwood Theater)
German Wine and Beer Tastings (Saturday, October 9, 3-8 PM, at MoVino's Wine Bar)
Concert of German music (Thursday, October 7, 7 PM, at the Lutheran Church)
But the most CREATIVE event of the Brookings Oktoberfest will be: a VIDEO CONTEST!
If you (or a relative, like your Grandchild, or a friend, or a neighbor) have always wanted to make a video, here is your/their opportunity!

This contest is for all ages, in four categories:

Videos can be either Live Action, Animated, or Documentary.
There is no entry fee, and no purchase is required.
Video Contest Rules:
1. Videos must either be in English or have English subtitles.
2. Video entries are limited to 10 minutes, including credits.
3. Video entries must include some German element, such as language, history, music, art, food, architecture, cars (ANYTHING German!).
4. Videos must follow the standard G, PG, or PG-13 ratings.
The deadline for entries is September 30, 2010.
Winners will be announced on Sunday, October 10, 2010, at the Redwood Theater in Brookings, Oregon.
Entries will be judged on Editing, Sound, Lighting, German Content, and Artistic Merit.
Entries will be judged by Elmo Williams, Oscar-winning film editor, director, and producer.

WHAT WILL YOUR VIDEO BE LIKE?

On July 17th and 18th the skies of Brookings-Harbor will be filled with an array of colorful kites during the 18th Annual Southern Oregon Kite Festival. This free event, held at the Port of Brookings-Harbor, is a very unique festival in comparison to other kite festivals in the United States as the kite flyers attend by “invitation only.” This festival is truly a “one of a kind event” and has become the model to which other festival organizers throughout the country aspire.
Nationally and internationally renowned kite pilots will be on hand to entertain the crowds with their fantastic aerials choreographed to music. Returning this year is fan favorite, John Barresi, who, in addition to being a member of the team iQuad, will perform individual routines. Team iQuad will be performing as a six-member team flying their multi-directional Revolution kites. The gigantic kites of Rod and Cindy Thrall will amaze the crowds. Rokkaku specialist Ronda Brewer will be on hand as well as national champion Ron Despojado. David and Susan Gomberg will feature their big “show kites.” These are just a few of more than twenty-five kite flyers and kite makers who will continually rotate their skills over the two days of the Southern Oregon Kite Festival.
A free Children’s Kite Building Workshop for kids ages 3 and up will be held each day of the kite festival from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
The kite festival’s weekend activities will also feature food and beverage vendors as well as arts and crafts booths for the enjoyment of the attendees.
Spectators are invited to set up their chairs or blankets along side the kite field. Parking will be available in the large parking lot near the Chamber of Commerce building, located on Lower Harbor Road. Curry Transportation will provide a free shuttle to and from the kite festival every 15 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – a less than 5-minute trip from the parking lot to the kite flying field.

The Sunday Artisans were up early on July 4
to set up in the parking lot at the southeast corner of Chetco Boulevard and Oak Street. Vendors included Violet and Len Burton with their charming booth of Len's original oil paintings and prints, Violet's original photography and prints and lots of Len's wonderful hand painted creations in wood.

Len has an intriguing new item... framed seascapes with a "shadow box" below filled with seashells, small driftwood and other small "found" items from the beach. The back can be opened so you can include your own beach treasures.
Other vendors at the Sunday Artisans included fine jewelry, handcrafted leather items, pottery and stone work, and beautiful succulents.

Here he is, Mr. Plein Aire himself, Rob Decker, offering a home grown blueberry to Trude Zmoelnig. Rob's pastels are getting better by the day and are still priced reasonably.
You'll find the Sunday Artisans at the corner of Checo Avenue (Highway 101) and Oak Street, every Sunday during July, August, and September. They will offer artist demonstrations, arts, crafts, plants, garden items, and some produce. Hours are 10 am to 4 pm every Sunday.

Separate/Together is the title of the collage show and visitors have been intrigued to get a glimpse of the "process" behind the artwork. It's not as easy as it sounds to give up the artist's ego and vulnerability and let someone else work on your masterpiece!
VENTURE OUT FOR AN EVENING of aesthetic delight, Friday, JULY 16th. SAGE Gallery welcomes Susan and Steve Dimock and invites you to meet the artists, as they discuss their work and the art of photography. An evening Gallery talk and reception are planned for 4-8pm. Susan and Steve are local photographers who capture the intricacies, subtlety and vibrance of our natural surroundings. "Interactions" is a magnificent display that reflects Steve's lifelong pursuit of nature, through the lens, and Susan's philosophical quest to "nurture the Creative Spirit" and reflect the "Passion in Life" discovered in nature's wonders. They will begin their talk at 5:30 pm.
THREE DAY MASTER WORKSHOP COMING TO SAGE PLACE..... We are delighted to announce that Master Artist Keith Sluder will be joining us to help launch our Arts Education programs at SAGE Place. Keith is an internationally acclaimed artist who works in a wide variety of water-based media. He teaches across Oregon and is returning to the coast with a newly designed learning experience, "The Earth, The Sea, and The Sky"
This is a three day intensive workshop, offered August 13-15. Classes will meet daily from 9:30-4:30 when Keith will teach the techniques you need to master the art of nature painting, including: the techniques of glazing, stippling, creative texture applications, and more. Make a forest meadow, babbling brook, ocean waves and the sky come to life in your work!
This is a great learning opportunity for beginner and advanced students.

SAGE KIDS Summer Arts Program returns to the Port Picnic Shelter...
Artist Susan Lehman will once again join SAGE and The Port of Bandon for some Summer fun on the Bandon Boardwalk. SAGE Kids will meet Saturdays: August 14, August 21, and August 28, 10:00 am - 11:00 am in the glass picnic shelter. This year's workshops will focus on pattern and design as used by early Native Americans and other cultures. Susan will teach principles of basic design as students explore a wide variety of media in the workshops.
Workshops are FREE this year and recommended for students
7-14 years old. Space is limited and re-registration is highly suggested. Register by calling SAGE at (541) 329-0103.

Revelers gathered around the bidding "paddles": Claudia Mach, Jane Opiat, Christina Olsen, Jo Mochulski, Len Burton, Violet Burton, and standing, Jean Beebe and Sara Broderick.
The auction of Beach Buckets and other beach related items is about to begin. For the past few years members at Manley have decorated tennis shoes for the auction - this year the theme was the beach and members donated hand painted beach buckets filled with goodies and several other beach/coastal items.
Auctioneer Jo Mochulski kept the crowd in stitches and kept the bids coming in. Bidders from age 9 to 90 took home beach treasures that brought in more than $1000 for the Manley Arts Center Building Fund.
Bidding was lively on this wind bell by Brenda Stafford. It is decorated with a hand painted sea otter. You can see more of Brenda's popular bells and other art on August 21 during the Coastal Garden and Art Tour. Tickets for the tour will be available soon at Manley Art Center, Words and Pictures and several other places in Brookings, Crescent City, Gold Beach, and Port Orford.
But the Tour d'jour is the ART STUDIO TOUR. Five Brookings/Harbor artists opened their studios and eight artists showed and demonstrated their art. It's fascinating and educational to see where the artists do their work.
Jean Beebe, who produces incredibly intricate porcelain art, does it right in her kitchen... and her entire house is a gallery of her beautiful porcelain and watercolors. You may call her for a tour.
Jane Opiat set up her loom on Jean Beebe's deck and worked as visitors admired her beautiful display of scarves. Jane shows her scarves at Manley Art Center and you will also see her on the Coastal Garden and Art Tour.
Jean Johnston's jewelry always amazes. It's beautifully made of excellent quality materials, and priced reasonably. Jean participates in the Festival of the Arts (August 7/8), the Coastal Garden and Art Tour (August 21) and other local shows. Jean set up her workbench at Christina Olsen's place and showed a variety of her work.
Brenda Stafford demonstrated watercolor painting on Christina's deck. Brenda also teaches rock painting at Manley Art Center. She will demonstrate at the Coastal Garden and Art Tour.

Sara Broderick's studio has the coveted light of huge north windows. She currently has three "dog" pieces in progress. Sara teaches art at SOCC and College of the Redwoods.
The Reception to meet the Studio Tour Artists will be held at Manley Art Center and Gallery from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Friday, June25. $10.00 at the door includes admission to both the reception and a “Tour Pass” for the next day's tour. The reception includes catered finger food, champagne and a collectible flute. An auction of “beach buckets” and small art pieces of "all things coastal" will begin at 6:15.
The Brookings Harbor ART STUDIO TOUR is June 26, 2010 from 10 am - 5 pm. This event is a fundraiser for Manley Art Center and Gallery. The $10.00 individual “Tour Pass” (ticket) includes examples of the artists’ work and provides a map of the area highlighting tour locations. The “Tour Pass” is available at Manley Art Center, Words and Pictures and Wright's Custom Framing in Brookings.
Here's an opportunity that doesn't come along very often… a chance to participate in a project that will enhance Brookings' image and be a source of pride for all of Brookings.
Here’s the background. On June 12th, Realtor Bryan Tillung read a letter to the editor in the "Curry Coastal Pilot", written by Brookings resident, Noreen Foster. In her letter she presented to the Mayor of Brookings a question concerning the "Welcome to Brookings" billboard at the north end of town by the mill. “Over the next few days," Tillung said, "I couldn't stop thinking about Noreen's words she had written with such trepidation. A few days later, I decided to drive out to the location of the billboard, to take a look for myself, at its present state. Realizing that first impressions are remembered, I wondered how soon visitors to our wonderful town, would forget us, or worse yet, not want to return.” [Or very likely just drive right on through without stopping to explore a town that is represented by an aging and decaying welcome sign .]
“My initial thought was to be that "volunteer", Noreen spoke of, and simply touch up the faded and splintering paint. Standing on the soft shoulder of Hwy 101 and Carpenterville, in a bold attempt to size up the project, I turned and looked in the direction leading into Brookings; then turning, looking in the opposite direction. Then it struck me... ‘A project of this magnitude needs to be shared with the community’. I also realized, in order to pull off a successful restoration, it would take community involvement and a team of dedicated, skilled crafts persons”.
Bryan contacted the city, South Coast Lumber and the Chamber of Commerce, who referred him to the Pelican Bay Arts Association for help. There seems to be no ownership of the sign!
Back to the present… Bryan contacted PBAA President Lorelei Hanna, who immediately saw this community need as an exciting opportunity. She has spoken with many others who expressed enthusiasm for the project. PBAA has been given the opportunity to redesign and upgrade the sign. A meeting to “set in motion, a structured plan outlining events that would need to take place in order to be successful in this endeavor” is scheduled for July 12 at 10 am at Manley Art Center. Kerr’s Ace Hardware will donate all the paint, brushes and needed supplies. Bryan has already received offers of donations of funds to commission a sculpture artist to help enhance the project. A small “garden” area to surround the sign is being considered. The project also includes a fresh coat of paint for the welcome sign at the south end of town and possibly restoring the sea gull. What are your ideas?
Bryan urges us: “As mentioned in Noreen's letter, ‘Let's do what we can to show how friendly this little town truly is’”.

Kids Art Camp in Brookings began this week with everyone having fun and learning to paint. Janeen Vick teaches the kids the "real" basics of color mixing, application, and composition using "real" watercolor paint, good brushes, and watercolor paper. Kids from age 7 to 14 may participate. Classes are 10 am to 2 pm every Mon/Tues/Wed through July 28. Sign up for as many classes as you like. Janeen's energy seems boundless and she gives individual instruction to each student. $8 per day/ 2nd and 3rd child in the same family pay half price.

Summer arrived just in time for the June 12 Art Walk. Brian Scott Gallery was bustling with activity on the warmest evening of the year so far. Taste O' Honey entertained.
Chef George Rhodes from the Art Alley Grill (downstairs at Brian Scott Gallery) demonstrated "Garnishing your Plate" - and showed us some really easy ways to artifully decorate a plate.
Margaret Clark, RN, Holistic Health Consultant and Nutritionist gave a talk on the "Art of Detoxification through Energy Medicine"

Photographer George Cady is Artist of the Month at Manley Art Center. He presented Photoshop demonstrations for art walk visitors.

In the Manley Gallery this month you can see a preview of some of the items that will be auctioned at the Black Tie and Tennis Shoe Reception on Friday, June 25. The Art Studio Tour is on Saturday, June 26 this year. Tickets are available at Manley now or at the door, and include both the Saturday tour and admission to the Friday Evening catered reception (including an ingraved wine glass) for only $10. Where can you get more entertainment than that for $10? This is a benefit for Manley Art Center.

The Wild Coast Photograph Club Members showed some very impressive photos. This group meets twice a month: 1st and 3rd Wednesdays from 12:30 to 2:30 pm at the Chetco Activity Center, 550 Chetco Lane, and 2nd and 4th Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Manley Art Center, 433 Oak Street. You may attend just one or both meetings each month. If you want to learn to take better pictures and meet others who are interested in photography, this is a wonderful opportunity. Bill started a memorial fund last year when his good friend and local artist, Glenn Dobrusky died in a tragic accident. To keep Glenn’s memory and his love for the creative arts alive, they have chosen the Summer Art Camp for Kids as recipients of a monetary gift this year. This check will help pay the tuition for two more kids to attend art camp who otherwise would not be able to go. People who wish to contribute to the Glenn Dobrusky fund may contact Matthey at 541 698-0073 or go to the Glenn Dobrusky Memorial Fund website, www.myspace.com/notmychacha. Providing funds for this memorial will allow them to continue to make special contributions to other artists who might not have that chance without funding. We are so grateful to Matthey and his wife for this assistance. Funding like this allows our kids to continue in the afterschool art classes and summer art camp.
Kids Art Camp will begin June 14 and will run until July 28.
Manley Art Center doesn’t have enough space for the kids’ program. Thank you to the Shriners Club, who once again offered the use of their building (The Shriners Lodge - Masonic Temple, 416 Azalea Park Road).
Art Camp is just 3 days a week, Mon/Tues/Wed. from 10 am to 2 pm. All children ages 7-14 are welcome to come and give it a try. Many kids have other activities during the summer, like swimming lessons, camping etc. so having art camp just three days a week still gives them time to enjoy their other summer activities. Art keeps their minds open, busy, and creative, which enhances their relaxation and promotes positive feelings about themselves. Our art critiques bring about greater self esteem, especially among their peers. All kids need that growing up.
The cost for Art Camp is $8 per day with the 2nd and 3rd child of the same family paying half price. The total cost for the entire summer program is $168 per child. (You may pay as you go!) We have two assistant teachers (high school art students) so the kids receive lots of one-on-one assistance. We also take advantage of the FREE LUNCH program offered at the high school. All of the art supplies will be provided, so just come to the first class on Monday, June 14 and be ready to have lots of fun. Bring your friends too!
Art Camp is supported by the community and your help is needed. We have several students who cannot afford to come to art camp. If you would like to sponsor one or more child for art camp this summer, the total cost of one scholarship is $168 or a half scholarship is $84. We also appreciate smaller donations to defer the cost of the supplies. Please mail or take your donations to Manley Art Center and Gallery.

Did you notice the artwork of young children, ages 9-12, at the Azalea Festival?
These kids have developed their talent and creativity by attending Manley Art Center’s after school art classes and Summer Art Camp for Kids. All of this year’s participants are advanced students of these programs for kids, under the direction of Janeen Vick. The ribbon winners this year are, Jaedyn Rollins 1st place, Siena Worthey 2nd place, Tisha Bailey 3rd place and Brooklyn Hiller honorable mention. With your help, we can continue to teach these kids and assist in the arts for all our youth.
