Brookings is a Hot Spot on the Oregon Coast for Painting Workshops

Apart from miles of breathtaking coastal rock formations, Brookings may look like a lot of other seaside towns. The signpost on the highway says population 6,000. But if you even slow down as you pass through you'll see several art galleries. If you stop in at local businesses you're likely to find an abundance of art on the walls. This is a town of artists. Artists determined to the be best they can be. Many have retired from a successful career in another arena and are thrilled that they now have the time to devote to painting. Others are juggling a job and painting. A few are full time, professional artists. Most are enthusiastic about taking painting workshops. Some are willing to travel to study with artists they admire. Some like to stick nearer to home and lately the opportunities for workshops in Brookings have been outstanding. Aspiring artists from as far away as Portland, Oregon and Fortuna, California have come to Brookings for the workshops offered.

During 2009 The Manley Art Center offered workshops by watercolor artists Larry Johnson, Keith Sluder, and Jay Mosby, sculpture artist DJ Garrity, and oil painters Elio Camacho and Ernest Principato. 2010 will not disappoint.

Keith Sluder has already completed two water media workshops in Brookings in 2010. The first workshop covered painting the sea and rocks and the second focused on lighthouses. In April Keith will offer a third workshop at Southwestern Oregon Community College. This 2-day water media workshop is titled "The Changing Seasons". It will be held April 16-17, 2010 and the cost is $175. Keith Suder teaches the techniques that make his work unique - and also emphasizes the principles of design to his students. Frank "Gus" Gustafson taught an oil painting workshop at Manley that met every Monday for four weeks in February/March. The students painted primarily seascapes and florals. Gus reviewed the principles of design and composition and encouraged students to make value studies and to be aware of values as they paint.

Audi Stanton, who regularly teaches watercolor classes for beginners and advanced students, has also offered a schedule of workshops this year, including collage, handmade books, and mat cutting. Her March week-long acrylics workshop filled up with such a waiting list that she added a second session. The second session will be held March 22-26 and there MAY be a spot left. The Watercolor Society of Oregon (WSO) will hold their Spring Convention and Aqueous Media Show in Brookings. The show will hang at Manley Art Center. During the convention there will be workshops for members held all over Brookings, led by local professionals including Audi Stanton and the artists below:

The WSO show at Manley will be judged by internationally known artist, author, and instructor, Stephen Quiller. After the convention Stephen Quiller will hold a week long workshop in Brookings. This workshop was filled long ago, and has a very long waiting list of artists from several states. Check with Manley Art Center if you are interested in attending a lecture/demo by Stephen Quiller on the morning of Sunday, April 11 ($10). More about Stephen Quiller.

During the April Brookings Second Saturday Art Walk (April 10 at 4 pm) the WSO show at Manley will open to the public and will be open Tues through Sunday 11am to 4 pm for the remainder of April. Also during the Art Walk on April 10 there will be a water media demonstration at the Chetco Community Library (4:30-6:30) by Keith Sluder and a plein air oil demo somewhere along the Art Walk route by Bay Area oil painter Elio Camacho. Elio will set up his easel in a location that inspires him at that moment. For the past two years Elio has held a week long plein air oil painting workshop in Brookings. In July, Manley Art Center is offering two 3-day workshops by another internationally known artist, author, and instructor - Ron Ranson. Sign up at Manley for either July 9-10-11 (Fri-Sun) or July 13-14-15 Tues - Thurs). $300 for PBAA members and $350 for non-members. Watercolor Society of Oregon (WSO) Traveling Show in Bandon!

SAGE Gallery is very pleased to have been invited to host the 44th Annual Transparent Watercolor Traveling Exhibit! A reception will be held Sunday, March 7th from 2-5 PM.

The 21 works on exhibit were selected from over 350 in a juried event, 80 pieces were then displayed in McMinnville and a final 21 were selected to travel to various venues in Oregon. This exhibit will be on display during the entire month of March. We are delighted to have been selected as a site for this incredible showing!

I hope you have been enjoying the wonderful spring weather and the brilliant blossoms on Bandon's favorite shrub (well, weed actually), gorse, of course!

We have a fantastic view for you, on the inside of the Gallery this time! Yes, the 44th Annual Transparent Watercolor Traveling Exhibit is up through the first week of April and we are so greateful to Victoria Tierney who arranged, with the Watercolor Society of Oregon, to make SAGE the final destination for these fantastic works!

Just in case you forgot to save the date last month, here's your reminder: You are invited to join us for a reception this Sunday, March 7th, 2-5pm. Beginning at 3pm, SAGE is delighted to have Coos Bay artist, Donna Wright, demonstrating her unique watercolor "pouring" technique.

Donna's work is currently on exhibit at the Women's Imaging Center in Coos Bay, as well as at SAGE. Donna also teaches at SOCC; you won't want to miss her demo. Send your friends, too, our address is 390 First St. SW, Suite 2D, Bandon; just tell them to look for the big white building with the red roof, at the river's edge in Old Town.

SO, HERE'S WHAT ELSE WE'VE BEEN UP TO...

Most of you know that we don't sit still very well over here and this month has been no different, although we always think it will be.

WITH THE LITTLE ARTISTS...

We have been busy bringing arts and crafts activities to the Youth Center, twice a month and the kids are really beginning to anticipate our visits. Last week one of Bandon's bright young elementary students, David, lead the lesson and we created frogs birds and other wonderful "alien critters"

from walnut shells, feathers and similar funny stuff. David is incredibly creative and a true role model for the other kids! SAGE is very appreciative of the opportunity to participate with the Youth Center; we thank Director Harv Schubothe who works so hard to bring all kinds of support and experiences to Bandon's youth.

AND THE BIG ARTISTS...

have also been having the most delightful time on Tuesday evenings participating after hours with Angela Pozzi and many wonderful volunteers who come together for the "Washed Ashore" project at Art 101. I recently had a moment to communicate with Angela about the incredible social, cultural and artistic impact of her community recycling art project and I'm in awe of her abilities, not only an artist, but also an organizer and visionary. For at least a decade, while I taught Art History, I told my students the next major movement in art would be purpose-driven. By that I mean art that demands of its audience, not only reflection upon the human condition and our impact upon the world around us, but also action in re-defining human purpose and creating art that motivates us to live purposefully, as individuals and collective society. Angela Pozzi and "Washed Ashore" bring exactly those concepts to life; if you haven't participated yet, you're missing out!

ON THE TOPIC OF ART HISOTRY...

The Coos Art Museum has invited me back as a guest lecturer next Thursday, March 11, at 7 pm. This time the topic is "Five Symbols, Five Thousand Years". I hope you will join me as we explore art and symbolic representations that exemplify commonalities across cultural boundaries. Last month Steven Broocks, CAM's Director, gave a fabulous talk on the art and culture of ancient Egypt. I will again be jumping in where Steven left off and bringing you all the way into art of the 21st century, including the art of recent film releases.

On the topic of CAM, you won't want to miss the incredible work that has just gone up; the museum is, again alive with the creative talents of children in its biennial exhibit.

Thanks to Steven, Karen Hammer, Emily Ashworth, and all of CAM's wonderful volunteers for their hard work and dedication to our young artists.

SO, HOW'S THAT BUILDING COMING ALONG?

Transformed is the word that comes to mind! Everyday is a new direction; Ralph Leshin and his non-stop teams of sub-contractors are truly amazing...we're aiming for mid summer. The building is bathed in light, with the addition of many new windows, and Cheryl Franich, SAGE's stained glass instructor, has been busy building my designs into glass realities that will capture the full spectrum of color!

BY THE WAY, WHAT IS UP WITH THOSE CLASSES?

Well, our 4=5 program has really been taking off! We've had several private workshops arranged by friends who want to get together for a creative, right-brained day or night out and we are loving it! You bring the group, four friends plus yourself, and get your own tuition free. We can provide workshops in almost any media, just give us a call (541) 329-0103

And for those who just want to drop in and join us to meet new creative friends, we have some great classes this month.

We are also busily working with teachers to develop a HUGE range of workshops to launch this summer in our new classroom, located at 525 11th St.SE.

Keep an eye out for flameworking, fusing, metalsmithing, digital imaging, mosaic, print making, textile, and alternative technique classes to arrive this summer and early fall. In the mean time...

Watercolor Society of Oregon Convention comes to Brookings, Oregon in April

On April 9, 10 and 11 Brookings, Oregon will experience a first; The Watercolor Society of Oregon will hold their Spring Convention and Show in this art loving coastal town. About 150 members and guests are expected.

The Watercolor Society of Oregon (WSO) has more than 800 members, but only 18 of them live in Curry County. Members submit paintings for each show, and out of approximately 380 entries, 80 are chosen to be shown. The winners are chosen by a different juror during each convention. The juror for the Brookings Convention will be internationally known artist, writer, and teacher, Stephen Quiller. Mr. Quiller is known for his innovative water media painting and his use of color.

Curry County members who have had work chosen for the show include Janeen Vick and Buzz Stewart from Brookings, and Pat Renner and Shelly Wierzba from Gold Beach. The show will be held at Manley Art Center with an artists' reception on the afternoon of Saturday, April 10. At 4 pm on Saturday the Art Walk begins, and the public is invited to view the WSO show at Manley for the first time. The show will remain at Manley during the month of April, and then travel around Oregon in the following months.

In addition to this very special juried watercolor show at Manley, the April Art Walk will feature a wonderful show at the Chetco Library by Curry County Members of the Watercolor Society of Oregon. Bend artist Keith Sluder will be doing a demonstration at the library during the Art Walk and Bay Area Oil Painter Elio Camacho will choose an outdoor location on the Art Walk Route to paint a large oil.

A banquet at the Elks Lodge follows the Manley Reception and Art Walk. Stephen Quiller will be holding a workshop at the Best Western Beachfront Inn during the following week. It was sold out long ago with a waiting list that includes artists from several other states.

Ron Ranson’s Approach to Watercolor Painting

Ron’s watercolors are impressionistic and representational. Using his signature hake brush, his aim is to produce strong and colorful paintings with economy of stroke and a limited palette. He not only does several demos each day, painting as he explains, but works with each student on a one to one basis every day. Strong design principles are emphasized, as they are the foundation of every good painting. Sound painting techniques are put forth, but students quickly relax with his friendly English sense of humor. Ron is a seemingly tireless watercolorist with a worldwide teaching reputation, having written 25 books on painting, and countless articles for art magazines throughout the U.K., Europe, Australia, South Africa, Scandinavia and the USA. Shannon Weber is a nationally known basketry/mixed media artist who started her work in Agness, Oregon 22 years ago. Her work has been exhibited, awarded and published thoughout the country. Keith Sluder's "Lighthouses and the Sea" Workshop March 6-8 in Brookings, Oregon

Keith will be teaching fascinating techniques in watercolor (various brands) at his 3 DAY Lighthouses and The Sea Workshop on March 6 - 8. He'll also teach additional techniques using Jack Richeson's Shiva Casein and Jo Sonja Paints. He will demonstrate other water-based media (gouache, inks, egg tempera, acrylic) different ones each day so students can play with all 7 water-based media in class. Students will choose the media they want to use to paint their lighthouse painting each afternoon. Keith will spend time individually with his students to help them better understand the techniques and subjects he demonstrated in the morning.

Keith feels that for artists living on the coast, learning to paint 3 unique lighthouses, each with different settings and moods, will enhance their command of these subjects. Keith will supply lighthouse sketches for those who want to make their lighthouses "even better" plus save time so they can complete 3 full paintings. Beginners through advanced artists welcome. Poetry Reading and Writing Workshops in Crescent City, CA on February 24 and 25

College of the Redwoods, Del Norte and the Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA) will present a poetry reading at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24 in the college's library, 883 W. Washington Blvd. in Crescent City. At that time, two San Francisco Bay area poets will read from their original works.

William Keener, writer, naturalist and environmental lawyer, will read from his award-winning chapbook Gold Leaf on Granite, a 2008 Anabiosis Press publication. His poems appear in numerous journals, both print and online, including Appalachia, Atlanta Review, Camas, The Kerf, The Main Street Rag, Margie, Rattle, Terrain.org and Water-Stone Review. In August 2009, he was invited to be one of the "Artists in the Back Country" in Sequoia National Park, a program designed to rekindle the tradition of enhancing public awareness of our country's lands through literature and the arts.

Dave Seter, Princeton University civil engineering graduate and recent affiliate artist at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, will read from Night Duty, a 2010 Main Street Rag publication. He has had poems published in various journals including the Kerf, Clackamas Review, Wisconsin Review, Switched-On Gutenberg, Karamu, Blue Collar Review, and others.

Keener and Seter will also give a poetry writing workshop at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Del Norte Senior Center, 1765 Northcrest Dr. in Crescent City. Both events are free and open to the public (though donations toward future events are welcomed), and are supported by Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it received from the James Irvine Foundation.

A Photographic Art Show

After just nine months in existence, the Wild Coast Photography Club is mounting its first juried show/public photography exhibition at the Chetco Community Public Library in Brookings from March 2 through March 31. The exhibition, entitled A PHOTOGRAPHIC ART SHOW features the works of 11 amateur photographers from Brookings and the surrounding area. All photographs are for sale as a club fund-raising event.

Through the Wild Coast Photography Club, I’ve met many talented amateur photographers. I think you will be impressed with the caliber of their photographs in the show,” said Jack Sheid, Club Coordinator. On Friday, March 5 award-winning photographer Carol A. Schach of Crescent City will judge photographs and award first, second and third place ribbons in both Novice and Advanced Divisions, as well as an overall Best in Show ribbon. Following the judging the Wild Coast Photography Club will host a public reception from 4:30 to 6:00 PM at the library.

A special People’s Choice ribbon will be awarded after the Second Saturday Art Walk on March 13. Ballots are available at the exhibition beginning March 2.

What Happened at the February Brookings Second Saturday Art Walk

Giraffes on a Raft performed at the newly redecorated Manley Art Center. MAC has been in the retrofitting process for the past two years. The exterior walls were restored and painted and a new entry built, now the interior has been restored and painted. A grant will be sought to "cover" a new roof. Plans have been drawn up by Dick Geney for new landscaping along the front of the building. All projects except for the new roof will be completed in time for the Watercolor Society of Oregon's Spring Convention and Show on April 9, 10, 11 - the show will be held at MAC, the convention headquarters will be at the Best Western Beachfront Inn, and a banquet will be held at the Elks Club.

Frank "Gus" Gustafson (artist of the Month at MAC, along with Ginger Fetters). Gus did an oil painting demonstration at the February meeting of PBAA at MAC where he departed from his usual style of realism and created a beautiful impressionist landscape. Here he is doing another teaching demo during the Art Walk. Gus is offering an oil painting class at Manley Art Center for four consecutive Mondays, beginning February 15. There may be a spot open, so if you'd like to join this class, come to Manley at 9 am on Monday, Feb 15 and ask. See a painting by Gus.

It's not your eyes - the photo is blurry... that's because it's difficult to keep up with the constantly fast-moving Lorelei Hanna. Lorelei is the new President of PBAA and she is celebrating the successful completion of the MAC gallery painting project in time for the Art Walk. Jeanene Craft (left) is the reason that you'll now find a beautiful table of finger foods at MAC during every Art Walk.

Marilyn Hibler was at the keyboard and also showing her paintings at A Wild Bird and Backyard General Store. Marilyn fits perfectly with this charming store.

Jon Parmentier performed at Wright's Down Under where the work of Janis Parker, Sharon Guinn and Donna Bush is hung.

At Wrights Custom Framing - Lon Goddard and Aura Wright entertained. During February Wrights is showing watercolors and pastels by Crescent City Artist, Lynne Parker.

Billie Ruth Furuichi serenaded guests at Dewey's Digs where Agatha Conrad's photography was displayed.

At Signatures Gallery, Harbrook Jewelry displayed their collection of William Henry limited edition hand-forged pocket knives (luxury grade functional art). You can still see Thomas Sheets' environmental-assemblage-driftwood wall art at Signatures, along with the work of Drew Struzan, Spencer Reynolds, Jan Kunz, Christina Olsen, Sandy Bonney, and others.

Brookings Artists Ann Ostrowski and Buzz Stewart chatted at the "Signs of Spring" Show at Words and Pictures. The large tulips are by Brookings Artist and art teacher Sara Broderick.

Brian Scott's Gallery was buzzing with music and fun art. Horst Wolf presented his latest "Mini Martians" and Leslie Wolf is showing some of her watercolors. Behind the bar Dale Wells' watercolors add to the gala atmosphere.

Horst Wolf was tending the bar and offered a refreshment to Ann Ostrowski.

And finally... During February at Chetco Community Library you can see a show called "Art Teachers of Our Coast".

Lighthouses and the Sea Keith Sluder Workshop using Water Media March 6 - 8, Events Center, Brookings

Throughout Keith Sluder's 40 years of success as an international artist, as owner of 2 galleries and partner in a third in Southern California, with movie star collectors in Hollywood, Keith was always asked how he produced his unique techniques. At times he taught workshops and gave private lessons, but it wasn't until he relocated from San Diego to Bend that he started teaching full-time. After many years involved with high-end galleries, it was in Oregon that Keith decided to take his art in a different direction.

Giving workshops has deeply affected Keith. He's come to realize what a gift he has and now feels he has a purpose; that he can truly help other people. In turn, they help Keith by allowing him to do what he loves. It wasn't long before 3 prominent paint companies wanted Keith to represent them at his workshops (Jack Richeson, Jo Sonja, and Daniel Smith]; providing paint, mediums, and brushes for his students to use at the workshops. They know that Keith's skill as an artist and his ability to demonstrate how to use their products will bring them business in return. Everyone wins. The students can attend a workshop without the additional costs of a lengthy expensive supply list...they can try materials that they never heard of or tried before without making an investment in advance. He has developed techniques over many years and has come up with step-by-step shortcuts for these techniques so beginners can hold their own with intermediate and advanced artists without feeling overwhelmed. By taking small steps, Keith has devised methods so that any skill level will get good results. Keith prepares 40 to 50+ page workbooks for his students (depending on length of workshop) with his Step-By-Steps on how to paint each technique, along with color pictures of his artwork describing each technique plus his "Inner Secrets" for each subject matter taught. Rarely does an artist reveal so much. Keith loves to share and wants to bring out the best in his students.

Experiencing success early is so important to encourage beginners. Keith feels the hardest technique to master in the field of art is the application of surface textures; specifically, the concept of converting a 2 dimensional shape into a 3 dimensional object. Keith can help a beginner create that breakthrough. He can help skilled artists refine their styles. 	Competition Information Now Available You are invited to enter the juried art show of the California State Fair! The 2010 California Fine Art competition information is now available online. Follow the links or go to www.bigfun.org click the “competitions” tab on the home page then scroll down to “Fine Art” and click on the words “Handbook” “Entry Form” or “Quick Reference Guide”. The Competition Handbook contains all of the rules and requirements for the competition, a must-read item. The Quick Reference Guide (also known as a Prospectus) gives you all of the divisions and dates at a glance. Entry Forms, fees and CDs are due by April 23^rd. On-line entry will be available on March 1^st but you can enter early by submitting the paper Entry Form.

	New California State Fair Dates The 2010 California State Fair will open on Wednesday, July 14,th – that’s a month earlier than previous years. This means the California Fine Art exhibit will open July 14^th and close on the last day of the fair, Sunday, August 1^st.

	Who is on the Jury? We will announce the jury members as soon as all the contracts are finalized. Look for an announcement of the 2010 Jury on our web site (under Fine Art on the Competitions Page, click on “2010 Jury”). As in the past, we are seeking a mix of Museum Curators, College/University Art Professors, well-known artists, and Gallery Directors. Each juror will judge one or more divisions, depending on the juror’s qualifications, experience and area of expertise.

Digital photographs, unless excessively manipulated by software, may be submitted in Classes 1, 2, or 3. Elio Camacho Oil Painting Demo at Crescent Harbor Gallery in Crescent City

There was standing room only for Elio Camacho's still life demonstration at Crescent Harbor Gallery on Thursday. Nearly 50 people crowded in to watch Elio create a colorful, impressionistic painting.

The photo doesn't do it justice. This is a wonderful painting.

Bricks for Valentine's Day

Stout Park surrounds Manley Art Center on Oak Street. The Stout Park project will enhance the area between Manley Art Center and Chetco Avenue in Brookings. Palm Stout, wife of Frank Stout who held controlling interest in the C & O Lumber Company, donated the property to the City of Brookings in 1966. She also left a trust to maintain the park. The trust does not cover the cost of further development. A gazebo and bench were added as an Eagle Scout project. More benches, paths, and a fountain are planned - waiting for funds to complete the project.

You can help to further develop this historic Brookings park and have your name or a loved one's name engraved on one of the park's bricks. What a nice Valentine gift for your sweetheart and for everyone in Brookings!

22 students attended Keith Sluder's ROCK 'N' SURF Workshop on January 11-12 at the Best Western Beachfront Inn. Keith supplied the specialty paints and art boards which helped keep the students' costs down. He gave each student his 40+ page Step-by Step Techniques SPECIAL FOLDER so students could improve their skills for years to come. Keith's students were fascinated with his unique shortcut techniques to realism that even got the beginners up and running.

Kids Art Classes at Manley Art Center begin February 4

Janeen Vick will begin teaching kids' after school art classes at Manley Art Center on Thursday, Feb 4th and every Thursday after for a total of six weeks ending March 11th. The class will be from 3:15--5:30. The cost is $5. per hour or $10 for each week. The word from Janeen is: "We will be learning about the basics of watercolor and doing some really FUN projects this time." Open to all kids ages 7 to 14. Frank "Gus" Gustafson will hold a four week oil painting class at Manley Art Center in Brookings, Oregon, beginning February 15. The class will meet each Monday for four consecutive weeks. The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA), a nonprofit local arts agency, presents its third performance of the season -- California Guitar Trio (CGT) -- in a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, January 24 in Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G Street in Crescent City.

DNACA's 27th season is made possible by underwriters Caldwell & Sund Family Trust, Bill & Kathy Maffett, Physicians of Sutter Coast Hospital Fund, Gene & Carol Schach, Smith River Rancheria/Lucky 7 Casino, Sutter Coast Hospital, Wild Rivers Community Foundation and Bicoastal Media.

Not your usual guitar trio -- and not originally from California -- these three gentlemen play steel string guitars, and hail from Belgium (Bert Lams), Japan (Hideo Moriya) and Utah (Paul Richards). Their instrumental whirlwind of musical genres ranges from jazz, originals and classical to cowboy classics and California-style surf rock.

California Guitar Trio's virtuosity and sly sense of humor have earned them wide notoriety and a rabid following, with significant crossover in the progressive, acoustic and classical music scenes.

Richards, Lams and Moriya met in 1987 in England, at one of Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft courses. After completing several of these intensive courses, the three traveled around the world for a few years, touring with Fripp's "League of Crafty Guitarists." Wishing to continue working together after the League had run its course, they convened in Los Angeles and founded the California Guitar Trio in 1991.

Since then, CGT has released more than 14 CDs, some studio and some live, which include originals as well as a wide variety of classics, such as Bach's "Toccata and Fugue," a clever hybrid of "Riders in the Storm" and "Ghost Riders in the Sky," "Bohemian Rhapsody," and Pipeline." Over the past 19 years of incessant touring, they have shared the stage with many superb musician and performers such as: John McLaughlin, Titi Puente, Taj Mahal, Peter Rowan and Tony Rice, Dark Star Orchestra, Adrian Legg and Kaki King.

In 1995, the trio toured worldwide with King Crimson. In 2004, collaborations with bassist Tony Levin (of King Crimson/Peter Gabriel) and drummer Paul Mastelotto widened the scope of the band's extensive repertoire and touring activity.

Notably, CGT music was featured on the television covergae of the 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004 Olympics, and on CBS, NBC, CNN and ESPN programs. The CGT performed on the 2003 Grammy-nominated track "Apollo" on Tony Levin's CD "Pieces of the Sun," and their music was sent into outer space as wake up music for the crew aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Endeavor.

"A California Guitar Trio performance is like a night at the theater: Drama, passion, humor, joy, pathos, it's all there," wrote Acoustic Musician Magazine. "Energetic. Eclectic. Frenetic. Dynamic. Guitar music has never sounded quite like this before," noted the Desert News.
