The group from the Twechar youth and community centre were blessed with gorgeous weather for their fast paced training day. The day was jam packed with practical sessions on everything from safety considerations prior to a paddle session, to an all in capsize with related drill. We obviously had time for a well deserved capuchino and a plate of chips at the en,d at local tavern . A great fun packed and rewarding day was had by all , with all candidates completing the course.

Some smaller birds were spotted , along with a dung beetle and a long horn beetle . Dave is a seasoned canoe guide and outdoor chap and was able to not only identify a wide variety of plants ,But to the delight of the group talk about the changing landscape and its connections to Scottish Heritage... a great safari . Today the main focus was on rescue skills in kayaks, including self-rescue, rescuing and being rescued by others.Generally this meant getting very wet, again and again.Even the initially slightly nervous were soon throwing themselves into the sheltered waters off Inchtavannach, Loch Lomond, emptying kayaks on the water and helping each other to get back into the boats.Their 2* skills in kayaks are becoming more and more polished so next time we'll go over it all again but in open bots (canoes) as the2* award candidates must be able to do all of the skill elements in both types of boat.Working with this group is a real pleasure and their progress has been very good.Gavin

The day started rather overcast and then improved to a rather warm afternoon. We were delighteed on making ladfall on InchLonaig startiling three deer which broke cover , big rafts of Goosander , a heron, mute swan, sparrow hawks and young wallabies were also spotted . The afternoon was a much slower informative pace ... visiting the pilgrimage centre . The grils left us for their camp dinner and although not looking forward to the midges though.

I live local and got into hillwalking when I was a kid , then latterly progressed onto scrambling followed on its heels by rock climbing. I'm really looking forward to learning the trade from the team and am lucky enough to have Allan as my mentor. I love the freedom of the outdoors and enjoy watching wildlife. I have allways wanted to work in the out of doors . Got a dog called Tess, Favourite book Lord of the rings...likes learning dislikes parking tickets...

Pictured here is Frank who is a skilled carpenter who works with our associates EDICT and his previous work has included making tow Rennie MacIntodh chairs given as a gift from the Scottish people to the Brussels Parliment. The store will house all related adventure equipment and expedition equipment and will be able to be hired out by anybody ... 10 % for WBN facebook folk ... so do not buy , just nip down to the base and hire .. easy.

In these boats they were really able to appreciate the connection and power transfer aspects of paddling.We had a bit of a relay race at one point and plenty of boat-swapping on the water - great for building confidence, teamwork and communication(not all repeatable!).The day ended with some rescue skills and capsizing - megasoakings all round.A really good day, loads of fun and all looking forward to their next session.
