I was getting ready to start my way in on a mower blade knife, just to get some practice before picking up some leaf spring, however I ended up looking up fire pistons on a whim. I noticed almost every fire piston instructional for making on used hardware and some sort of sealant. It seems directions for the wooden ones are non-existant. (Though I'm sure now that I've said that you guys will post so many links to them you'll make my head spin.)

I'm pretty decent with woodwork, and incredibly familiar with fire pistons. I decided I would make a challenge for myself instead. I live in a relatively urbanized little area in FL, in a relatively normal home. My challenge is to try and make a functioning fire piston from only what I can find around the house.

I'm a bit too much of a traditionalist to use hardware to do it. I know I could pull some tubing and bolts out and weld a cap on one end, stick an o-ring on and probably get away with that, but where would the fun be in that? :innocent:

To put another twist on it, power tools are out. Hand tools only.

I've managed to find my sheath material already. An old oak 2" diameter flag pole that wa laying around the garage. The only thing I'm missing now is the plunger material, and considering my lathe is electric run, it's not being used.

Once I start work on it I'll post some pics up, but for now any input on design for it would be great.

I have made a bunch of these 25' & 50' and they are awesome! I've always had rope/cord turn into a tangled mess when I've carried it in packs or the trunk of my cars. Not anymore with this!!
I might make some and sell them seeing as how the bracelet market is cornered
Maybe call them survival frisbees.

Here is the link and I hope it works: (about halfway down the page)

Grrrr...

If I use a cotton ball with petroleum jelly its a "one flick" ordeal.

But I cannot light anything natural using just my firesteel. I know Im just not looking for the right stuff. Today I tried again this time pulling the firesteel away from the tinder rather than pressing the striker toward the tinder. This kept my tinder in a better pile, but still no luck.

Again, no issue using cotton balls, or lint. But just cant get it done "naturally".

So anyone from the south east have any good pictures of what to look for as far as natural tinder? I can shave super thin wood and "fuzz sticks" all I want, but cant catch them with the firesteel.

I am learning that those shavings are actually my next step up... right?

Hi!

I've been on this site a few times, just looking, and finally made an attempt to create a username! Go Me! My real name is Angie, and I'm 22 years old from Coon Rapids, Mn.
I've been into the wilderness thing for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, I remember playing with my toys, pretending they were lost in the woods, or had made a home in the woods with only animals for company. When I was about 13, my mom handed me the book Clan of the Cave Bear, and I just learned from there. After reading all 5 of the author's books, I've become interested in medicinal and edible plants. I really hope to learn more.
Anyway, its good to know I'm not the only "crazy"one out there!!!! :toomany:

Howdy,

I've been lurking for quite a while, but given the quality of the discussions, I've finally decided I want in!

I've became interested in survival since I bought a copy of the SAS Handbook whilst in middle school, and I've been working (and often failing) at techniques since then.

I recently moved from Vancouver to Revelstoke, here in BC's interior temperate rainforest, and my interest in survival has been rekindled. I'm not a complete greenhorn when it comes to the outdoors and survival--I've been hunting and fishing here in BC since I was out of diapers--but I'd love to hone my skills!

So, is that how these introductions are supposed to work? I've posted on many forums, but I've never been directed to post an introduction for myself!

Howdy,

I've been searching for flint for knapping for some time, but I haven't been able to find any. Are there areas where flint just doesn't occur? Are there alternatives for stone tool making? Or am I just not looking hard enough?

For reference, I'm in Revelstoke, BC alongside the Columbia River a couple hours west of the Rockies.

Thanks,

Howdy,

I'm interested in getting a classic 'flint and steel' striker for fire making. I've been using firesteel for some time, but I'd like to try the challenge of the traditional flint and steel.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where I could pick up a traditional c-shaped steel striker?

Thanks,

Hi, I was invited by a dear friend from another forum who thought I needed to be here. Must be something I need to learn......everything! :innocent:
Life is good. I'm a Horticulurist by trade. I was working in Social Services until our dear Gov. Quinn here in IL decided to cut our funding so I have now joined the masses of unemployed.
I'm not exactly new to survival but sure do need to learn a lot more!
Looking forward to learning from you and hope to contribute.
