Can I admit to feeling 99% completely "overwhelmed"? This feels like such a tired and frankly ridiculous statement considering I am sitting in a warm apartment with a sleeping healthy child and a few precious moments to write something, there's food in the fridge, the car has gas in it, I'm going to a concert tonight so should I be complaining? no not really. This "overwhelmed" syndrome is something I have been mulling over lately and the fact I CAN mull over it makes me think I actually am not overwhelmed. If I didn't have a home, if I didn't have food I wouldn't really be sitting around saying "gee I am overwhelmed" I'd be out finding some food for my kid and trying to make sure we were warm for the night. So, the upshot of this observation is I kind of hate myself a little bit today. The thing is my beloved NYC is getting me down. I can hear the fat lady tuning up and she's about to start singing on my time here. Brutal winter, exorbitant rents, packed parks and play centers, zero clean beaches it's got me thinking my days are numbered. Also tearing through my brain right now is the bags and bags of vintage I just hung up and need to launder, the depletion of my Etsy shops without sufficient time to refill them and also I just ruined a chili with too much chipotle. Now the good thing about this is hey I am making sales which is why my shops are empty and my husband generally eats anything and declared the chili delicious. I hear you saying, wow why did she bring this blog back it makes no sense.....but I somehow think there might be a couple ladies reading this who will understand the "no point" to this blog and pretty much get the absolute scrambled mess one's brain can be when a million things are pinging about in it....I sometimes want my husband's brain which goes: work-eat-work-glass of wine-Netflix-sleep...and repeat. Excuse me while I go try rediscover my love for Brooklyn and hopefully cry along to Fleetwood Mac songs tonight, Stevie makes everything better.

There is so much repetition online isn't there? the same cute cottages, carefully disheveled interiors, artfully shot street style....sometimes the on-going imagery online is just too much for me. I joined pinterest ages ago and then never used it, I don't get it. I love collecting and digging through old photos but I pretty much never do this online, I love visiting friend's lovely apartments but would rather do laundry than scroll through the web looking at other people's interiors....I sometimes struggle with the need to promote my business through images but also the need to stay authentic to what kind of person/business owner I am, is this lace really "killing me"? maybe it is, maybe I really love it and that's what I should show today on my feed, but to force expression and to go just that little bit "over the top" in my excitement....sometimes that doesn't feel real to me, there is so much swooning and desire online it makes me giggle! Coming up to such a long vacation from my computer and iphone may be driving this reflective post about imagery and social media and I don't really know what my point exactly is. But the thing I will say is that this promotion really sucks us in to a vortex of desiring "likes" and "hearts", once again my husband trumps me at being able to ditch his phone at night and never check Facebook unless he's uploading pictures. He reluctantly checks instagram only to grumble "he hates this s**t" and doesn't really want to do it all but knows he has to. Maybe the truth is that I am a GIANT cynic and would rather have a belly laugh at myself than take anything I post too seriously, sometimes the endless promotion is just a little tiring and starts to ring a little false when forced. I actually used to work in PR before this vintage biz and never had a problem promoting someone else's product, there's just no distance whatsoever when you are a one-woman-show though, you are ON all the time...there is no OFF. If you got this far in the post you might just be as confused as me or you might slightly understand my predicament. Is the question how to be "real" in an increasingly murky online 'reality'? huh. Dunno. But your thoughts on the subject of social media are very appreciated!

I'm closing the shops soon for around 5 weeks while we head home to New Zealand. So many people have said "Are you closing the shops?".....I am a little perplexed by this question and being a little sensitive it makes me think "what the hell do people think I do all day??".....it also makes me very aware how similar running a growing, busy, active online shop is to running a brick and mortar shop. Imagine leaving a physical shop open for 5 weeks with an occasional friend dropping in to make sure things are ok, no new stock, no "cleaning", no changing the space, just "open". I think the sales would drop off rather dramatically and it would feel neglected pretty quickly. This is exactly how I feel about my online shop. I think it works (as much as it can given circumstances etc) because I tend to it as much as if I was physically *in* it. When I am not adding inventory I am changing photographs, updating listings, adjusting prices, adding sale items, getting rid of things I no longer want to sell, answering convos, prepping pics for social media, cleaning inventory....making sure it always looks well tended to. Much the same as you do with a brick and mortar. I do not believe that an online business can be successful or at least "regular" without a constant presence by the owner. There is so much incredible vintage out there that an online shop will get lost in the mix if it isn't tended to, it's what keeps regulars returning and your inventory turning over. When people say "oh couldn't someone ship for you?", I want to say quite loudly "I do not have an ebay account where I am getting rid of my closet!"......it disturbs me to the point where I think people see my business as some kind of weird hobby. Selling some old clothes, how quaint! Nope. This is a chunk of our family's livelihood and closing for 5 weeks is the ONLY option I have, no part of me wants an empty, static, untended yard of a shop.....now if I was going away for 1 week or even 2 I might understand but......sheesh....I have to treat this like I have a brick and mortar. It has to be that way or it won't work....interested to hear if fellow sellers agree!

Ah January 9th.....a year ago today was a most interesting day. I was 5 days away from my due date. Huge tummy, wearing tights and a stretchy old tee shirt and almost too out of breath to walk upstairs. I remember waking up that day and thinking yikes I better get a bikini wax, my thinking was that there would be a whole lot of people hanging out "down there" fairly soon and also I had no idea after the babe was born when I would ever get a chance or FEEL LIKE a wax....so off I went. The day tootled on like any other then that night I went out for dinner with a friend....during the dinner I was suddenly struck with waves of claustrophobia, a little nausea and a desperate need to get outside.....my friend suggested I might be going into labour but I laughed it off a little nervously and hurried home. By the time I reached home I thought "oh dear better close the shops" so I jumped online and put both shops on vacation.....by then I was vomiting and everything else rather violently....crap I thought I can't believe I have food poisoning now!! A quick "google" by my husband however revealed my symptoms to be...dum dum dum....labour! anyhoo.....it all happened really fast and a mere 10 hours later in the early hours of the 10th, our Wolf was born. I can remember most of it clearly, the nurse holding me by both arms while I got the epidural, the 4 doctors holding my legs and trying to tell me the right way to push, my husband declaring he could see "hair"......(not mine because I had the wax remember)....and then the joy of it all being over and a baby with all his limbs intact plopped on my chest. As luck would have it I do not need a bikini wax today so I can remember, rejoice and enjoy some cake, memories and hugs from my little one year old man. He's so much bigger than in this picture now, but I love it with my measuring tape entwined on his little legs. Love him.

back when he was tiny.

It's been a while, how was your holiday season? I hope it was filled with family, great food and some relaxation....we had a lovely time in our house but were struck down with terrible colds and cough which has made the past couple weeks very hard, I am however aware that it's bearable and am keeping the moaning to a minimum (mostly). Do you guys do resolutions? I never do but this year there are a few things I have learned and would like to make minor changes to if possible in 2014. Having a baby is quite possibly the hardest thing I have ever experienced, I cried pretty much every day for 6 months, sometimes with happiness but most often from exhaustion and frustration, sad but true! I was expecting the vintage shops to be very quiet this past year while I did battle with my new role as a mother but weirdly the part time hours coincided with a very busy selling year.....a truly wonderful thing indeed and I am thankful for all the ladies and gents who ordered from me, working on the shops gave my upturned life some perspective, I was able to take some time away from my lovely little babe and enjoy fussing about with clothes, bliss! My mother thinks I had a hard time adjusting to motherhood because I waited till I was 40, maybe she's right, we become so set in our ways! BUT truth be told, I was due for a shake up and this little Wolf has firmly planted himself in my heart, even with the tears, the tantrums, the no-sleep and the drool....bless him, I could not love him more. So anyway, here's a little of what a learned this year....some more deep than others, cheers to the new year everyone, hoping 2014 is a little more restful, a barrel of family fun and full of fabulous vintage!

It's possible to be really, really busy and really really lonely simultaneously.

If things don't go according to plan you better accept the way they are going, and really fast.

If your shipping is delayed by a day or two it's quite possible the customer won't even blink an eye.

Toast is a great dinner but not for a whole month.

Formulate a heavily sarcastic reply in your head by all means but refrain from typing it for at least 24 hours.

Your friends can be your family.

Making a "date night" schedule is not actually lame, it is a necessity.

Tomorrow might be harder than today, so just enjoy today.

Don't underestimate working for yourself, it's hard but can be a great achievement.

Ask for help but if you don't get it try not to think evil thoughts about the person you asked.

Fathers *generally* sleep more than mothers but they carry the same amount of stress (ish).

No, the underarm stain won't come out.

Vinegar removes/fades dye run, amazing.

It's ok to unfollow anyone who takes too many photos of their coffee, animal, child or feet.

Your business will survive without ever using hashtags.

It's ok to unfollow someone who lists hashtags like nobody's business.

Online friends can actually be very valuable friends.

Not everyone is great at social media. so many awkward captions and photos out there, if you force it, it shows.

What works for another seller doesn't necessarily work for you, in fact it probably won't, so probably best to rethink the mimic.

A long shower, a cup of tea, applying moisturizer, 10 minutes of a good programme, or a boozy hot chocolate before your baby comes back home are all a good idea.

Don't sweat the small stuff, just curse it and move on.

When the holiday season rolls around I am always acutely aware of how non-seasonal my shop is. Sure, I look out for season appropriate things but for the most part I list what I find and I find what I like! Seems like one of the joys of an online clothing shop is that someone from Sydney could buy a summer dress in the morning and someone from Vermont could buy a sweater in the afternoon, (I don't think I've ever shipped to Vermont) Anyway....I blame my kiwi upbringing for being oblivious to seasons. Not being raised here in America means the "Thanksgiving through to Christmas/Hanukkah" didn't really happen for me (no Thanksgiving of course), our holidays were all about Christmas day through New Years as it's summer time and we are at the beach, off on camping holidays and not at all thinking about fur, rhinestones and the like. Now that I have been stateside for almost 12 years I love the holiday season and I really love switching my closets over, folding away the tired summer stuff and dragging out the long wrinkled coats and millions of jeans...thinking about who to invite for the orphans turkey day and getting a real tree to put pressies under. But I don't seem to have embraced it very well in my vintage shop, there are days when NONE of my orders are domestic, the UK, Australia, France.....all over the globe and sometimes for all kinds of events too so the dress may not really need to be season appropriate. I am quite envious of all the lovely sellers who post shots of racks of coats, wooly sweaters and sparkly dresses....how do you find so much? how do you manage to squirrel it away.....I just don't work like that, mind you a NYC apartment has a liiiiiiittle to do with that. Having said all this I am planning a little holiday glamour in the shop this year, well, maybe not glamour but a little festive touch which might make up for the summer-winter soup I have created in there.......when can we start saying Happy Holidays? hope you guys have ordered your turkey! (or tofu).

The Cost of Good Choices

Not sure about you but I am a fairly staunch small business supporter. If a friend is selling something I try to buy it, I search Etsy usually before trying to find something online from a more corporate seller, I try to shop locally for our household items, use the local baby shop for Wolfie's things rather than Amazon but s**t it gets hard sometimes because of the extra expense! BUT, I am in no way complaining about the costs, I completely understand as a small business myself that individuals selling an item they have produced/found/sourced encounter much higher costs than a corporation or large company. In my old age I am becoming increasingly angry at the corporate monopoly on commerce and the downright criminality of the banking system....it makes me more and more supportive of existing outside this "system" as much as possible and not supporting the bloated growth of a select few multi-million dollar franchises.

It costs more to think like this though doesn't it? This morning Wolfie and I trotted down to our local farmers market, it is in Williamsburg Brooklyn, not the cheapest of areas and I think my $31 meager bag of vegetables can support that fact. I then paid $24 for some sausages and eggs. So within about 6 minutes I had spent $55 on an amount of food which wouldn't last the 3 of us more than a few days. It's a tough dilemma, sometimes I jump in the car and head to Trader Joes and even Wholefoods and I can get a lot more for my dollar at these places, and I don't think they really are such bad companies to support. But there is something so, so nice about getting your food from people who grew it, put it in their truck and drove to you with it, then chatted to you about the tomatoes and went home with your money in their pockets. The best part of that exchange is that the money I give them with almost 99% likely go BACK into their farm, whereas my money at Wholefoods is most certainly getting very much more distributed....however they employ a ton of people, support small suppliers etc so I guess large companies in many ways have validity in this way and are important for our economy.

I've decided that I'm going to find a happy medium somewhere with supporting local/small businesses. When I can I will, maybe every 2nd week shopping at the farmers market makes more sense financially than every week. I'm def' buying everything for the holiday season locally, any gifts for family and friends (though to be honest we don't send many anymore, do we really need more stuff?) will be purchased on Etsy or from local stores. Sometimes I think corporations really snag us with the ease of shopping with them....free shipping, next day delivery....and I def' use it occasionally but I feel so much better for taking a bit of extra time to get out and shop with independent retailers....are you thinking like this for the holidays? it's hard to make good choices sometimes, bit more effort and money but long term effects so much more rewarding, especially for many people I know who are self-employed. Having said all this I am well aware that even having the financial choice of buying organic and local is a luxury and I am grateful to be able to even consider both options!

Last week I bought this little brass mouse on Etsy, my receipts sort of float around my over-stuffed desk until I find time to log them so I figured this perky little guy would help to hold them in place and be a reminder to do it. I'm not sure if you guys are highly organized or a mess, or somewhere in between but running two shops single handedly is bloody hard work....throw a 9 month old baby in the mix and it's pretty much chaos until I pour a glass of wine at 8pm. But I ain't complaining, I am always super duper thankful for being busy and as my husband says it's a nice problem to have, yes sir! which brings me to systems....do you have any for inventory etc? mine is rather loose....I buy stuff, log the receipts into a monthly spreadsheet (the crudest of spreadsheets!) and sometimes....at the end of the month I work out what I paid for things and what I am left with after the sale etc....it's all very basic. Lately I feel like things have grown to the point where for sanity I should keep a better record....but here's the thing....I go shopping once or twice a month this is usually a 2 day affair, then the cleaning, the steaming, the photographing and the listing.....the shipping....the ordering of packing materials...the business cards....the emails....all me....how in the world am I going to implement a system, right now I eat standing up and literally run like a maniac from the second little Wolfie leaves the house till he comes back....John suggested I take each day at a time rather than wait to log information which I think is a good idea (at this point a marital argument of household chore imbalance could've ensued but you gotta pick your battles....) so, from now on after sales I am going to log the information on THAT day thus never having a build up of hideous paperwork! brilliant! I'd be interested to hear any advice about how you guys cope with this kind of small business one-woman show situation.....ok I'm off to take the receipts off the little mouse tail.

It's always wonderful to find another of something you loved but it didn't hang around long! The robe on the left sold quick smart, I loved it so much, fabulous deco pattern! Just 'replaced' it with this floral number which I also love, very confusing ties though and I spent around 30 mins trying different ways to thread it...anyway...if you have any ideas.....

Sometimes you don't actually have to ask a seller for a discount and still get a discount.....these days a ton of vintage sellers don't only sell in one "location" (disclaimer: I LOVE Etsy and always search there first OF COURSE).....however, here's how I saved $14.25 on these jeans.....
I found these FABULOUS 1940s jeans on Etsy, fully lined in flannel plaid, worn to perfection....my size. They were $48 + $11 shipping....pretty darn reasonable but I like the shop so thought I'd check their shop announcement for any coupon codes....(at the top of their homepage on Etsy)....nope, nothing there. But. There was an invite to "like" their FB page...which I did....lo and behold on their page was a link to their ebay store, ooooooh I thought just maybe these jeans are also listed there! they were. Same price. BUT the listing included a "make an offer" button so I did....$30...the seller returned with a bid of $35 so I accepted and paid an additional $9.75 in shipping. Amazing! So with a little detective work sometimes discounts are possible. I should add none of the above is possible with my shop except for the coupon codes which I often have and clearly Etsy wins over ebay every time (almost)! make sure to check your fave shops announcement page and their FB page for great deals.....you never know what you will find......;)

You always hear that saying "whatever works for you" and to be honest I never really paid too much attention to it but since having a baby and my own business it really REALLY is a phrase to live by isn't it? Doing what works for us really frees up a lot of things in our lives. That very common anxiety that what we are doing is not good enough or not quite enough, where we compare ourselves to others, maybe people with a baby the same age or a common business. I definitely became a little more autonomous within in my vintage business in the last year, slowly gave up selling eras and items that just didn't do so well, gave up the idea of having a store *just* like so many I admire online. Not sure autonomous is the right word but I came less connected to what other people were doing and *how* they were doing and just better at focusing on what my shop was selling, how it was doing....and we all know how differently similar businesses can run. When I had Wolfie the "whatever works" policy became a screamingly obvious phrase in this house and suddenly all my friends with kids started saying it.....I don't remember people saying it when I was pregnant, there was always useful advice re sleep, breastfeeding but after I had Wolfie and he developed his little traits suddenly everyone was spouting "whatever works"...."oh he sleeps in your bed?"....whatever works to get a good night's sleep...."he suddenly doesn't want to breastfeed, great formula time!".....whatever works....for months I had huge anxiety that Wolfie didn't sleep through the night but now he sleeps with us it's so much easier to handle and we all seem a little more rested. It sucks the crib is just sitting there and I would much rather he was in it but.....whatever works. This week I only listed about 5 new items in the shops, and while not ideal it was all I could handle time wise and I still managed some lovely online communication with customers and sold a few goodies so....on some level whatever works does really work....I tend to be an anxious person, worrying is my favorite pastime so I am NOT going to pretend this attitude comes easy but I think I am getting the hang of it. No vegetables in the fridge, oh well let's eat pizza....no new inventory till next shopping appointment...ah well just renew a few things and wait....life is short it's so nice to chill out and be content with our own lives for a bit, god knows we get such a fishbowl view into other lives online these days....but what works for them is not always good for us is it....

well. this is charming.

Do you sometimes feel that there are really no rules for online etiquette, that we are still finding our feet as to how we should communicate with people on the internet? ....for this wee rant about etiquette I'm going to use my own online shops as an example but I'm pretty sure you could also apply it to other forms of communication in your workplaces too. Many people write to ask for a discount in the shops, it's just a part of being in this online "marketplace"....to be honest it doesn't bug me half as much as it used to, but this week I realized that the HOW I am asked is actually wayyyyyyy more important than what is behind the question, it's not about the discount really, it's about etiquette and online communication.

If a convo (for non-Etsy folks this is an email within Etsy) starts with "hello!", we are off to a good start, this person is connecting with me at the other end. Nice one. If the next line is something like "I love this dress!" or "I love your shop!" (even if you don't particularly toss it in, really helps) then we are getting somewhere, to me this means: "at least they have a pulse and are mildly enthused about the potential purchase". The next part of the convo could go something like this: "I was wondering if you were having a sale soon?" or "I was wondering if you had any coupon codes available?" or "I was wondering if you would consider an offer on this piece?"......I really don't mind these questions, they give me the option to a) give a code b) decline politely c) negotiate further if appropriate.
Let's back track. I am extremely bothered by communication that doesn't start with a hello or a hi....I was born in the 70s, I may be a bit old school but you would NEVER walk up to a store clerk and say "will you take $20 for this?" without an "excuse me", "hi there" or some form of greeting. I think it's important also to remember online that whoever you are talking to at the other end is a person, just because you can't see them doesn't mean they aren't a human being. I know everyone is really "busy" all the time but there is always time to interact on a polite level, even briefly! it makes me wonder on some level if people these days don't actually need the "niceties" of everyday communication, maybe they don't think it's necessary? Am I stupidly concerned about it because I was brought up without the internet? probably, plus we all have our quirks of likes and dislikes, loud conversations on a cell phone are a whole other blog post. How important do you think greetings, full sentences (!), thank yous are these days? I say very!

p.s. on the asking for discount topic....do NOT under any circumstance tell me you have "blown your budget" (yay for me!) or "have a lot of expenses this month" ......ummmm, so do I.....hence me having a clothing business and not swinging from a palm tree in St Tropez.

Things took a tropical turn this week! I just purchased this fab 60s dress from Dana of Concetta's Closet, it fits really well and I couldn't get past this print! it is so unlike anything I currently have and is already in my suitcase for Miami this coming Monday! The 1930s mango feather hat is so fun I thought it might look quite crazy with the bright dress....this hat is wrapped up carefully and on it's way to the Lawn Party tomorrow....if you've had more than 4 cocktails please ask before ruffling it's feathers....he he! Shops on vacation from today the 16th to the 23rd! have a lovely week.....x
