Why Blogging is Good for Business

First before I get into this I want to explain my absence since I have last posted. The absence was intentional as I have been pushing a survey in order that I might have a better understanding of the target audience I am releasing a course on RSS to. I am not done with collecting data on this, I want to at least have 100 participants so I can have a decent sample to get my information from.

Now to the meat of the post. I have been talking with some folks about the necessity of having a blog for your business no matter if you are a solopreneur, running in a MLM style business model, or a corporate public traded entity. The first obvious reason from an SEO stand point is that it helps to build links to your main site. It also helps in deep linking-which is linking from one post to another post-within your blog so that folks spend more time on your site getting to know you and your business. You want people to build a relationship with you as that builds trust in you and your business. Blogging allows this ability as it facilitates a sense of community with you and anyone presently seeking what you have to offer. Additionally it also helps you in figuring out what products or services to continue to offer because people have the ability to leave feedback in the way of commenting and also distributing your content across the various social media sites out there.

With that being said you can position yourself as an authority in your industry and someone who is also a thought leader. For example if you write a well discussed post on how your product or service works, and how it can legitimately improve someones life, people will see that you care about your customers- past, present and future- and their well being to provide them with all the information they need to become an informed consumer. For me my pet peeve is going to a static site or eCommerce blog and not having enough information provided on a product to see if it would actually benefit me.

When I would visit sites back in the day when I was heavy into paint shop pro and everything to do with it I relied heavily on being told exactly how to do something so I knew how to use their tubes, frames, masks, and so on. Trust me if you didn't pay attention to where you were supposed to download something it would come back to bite you in the rear. I had that happen to me, I didn't have enough information on one site to tell me where I was supposed to do the aforementioned task, so I had to wait until I came across another site somewhere down the trail to find out the information.

Which now that I have said that having a blog for your business also helps in staying a step ahead of the competition. When I didn't have enough information from that one site I never went back to it. I will however, always go back to sites that provide concise information and resources that they have tested to make sure they work. So not positioning yourself as an authority in your niche can hurt your bottom line on the internet as people won't come to your site anymore if they suspect it is rubbish. Conversely, if you have a well written, informative blog you just got the upper hand on the competition that didn't even bother to care enough to put together a polished blog with intelligent, thought provoking material.

I could write on and on about the benefits, however I am sure that after reading this you have had a chance to see just a few of them.

5 Key Questions to Ask Yourself When Deciding on a Business.

As I continue to work on developing my Internet consulting business there are things that I will share with you so that you can see what processes I am going through in order to work towards the final hard copy of my business plan. This is one of those activities that I think is vital to you as a burgeoning entrepreneur as you begin to test the waters. So open up a Word doc, Google Doc or grab a pen and paper whatever works for you and write these questions out and then take some time to sit down and answer them a little at a time.

Do I have the "passion" to carry out the tasks necessary for the business to be successful? Yes I definitely have the passion for all things Internet related. I want to show other people the power of the Internet and how they can use it to make their business better and more accessible. Back in the late 90's I really didn't grasp the importance of the Internet just yet and now ten years later there are still others out there just like I was who need guidance and teaching on how to maneuver the Web 2.0 landscape in all of it's complexities.
Have I clearly defined a high integrity set of governing operating values that will support the delivery of quality products and services to my customers? I need to sit down and put together a "best practices" or set of policies for my company and make sure they are available to the public both online and by request offline. This also needs to be included in my business plan. Will I be able to promise a lot and deliver more? I am one to go above and beyond the call of duty when and where possible customers who deal with me will be satisfied to know that they have someone who is willing to go the extra mile for them.
Do I have adequate funding in place, not just promised, to make sure that the business can make it through the first year without having to deal with financial crunches? No, this is another thing I need to sit down and work on. I need to put together a financial plan so I can see what expenses I will have and how much I will need to create a cushion for that time when I do get to go brick and mortar.
Do I have the necessary leadership and managerial skills to implement a complete written business plan that serves as my working guidelines? I answered yes to this but now that I have been doing some research among the top five consulting firms in the world I have come to realize that I need the educational credentials to help me really learn from others in the business community. So I am going to be going for my BA in Business and Technology.
Do I know how to attract, select, and hire only the best staff members? At this point this does not apply to me but as my business grows I will have to take on additional partners so I will be keeping an eye out for what other top companies in my field are doing to find and retain the best staff for their company.

These questions will really help you to see exactly where you are as you begin the process of running your own company as you can tell by my answers I did a fair job in assessing my strengths and weaknesses and how I plan to overcome those weaknesses.

Blazing Minds	A great little arts and crafts blog with some very unique and lovely quilted postcards I would love to buy and send to some special women in my life.

One thing I do want to mention is that if your serious about making Entrecard work as a leveraging tool for your business look for blogs that are serious about dropping. It should state it in their profile if they are a casual dropper or dedicated dropper e.g,.

The other thing I want to add is for the bloggers who do make it a point to drop on you regularly do try to become somewhat active in their community. If you see a post that hits you the right way make a comment on it. The way I look at it Entrecard is still a viable way of getting free advertising for your blog. For the cash strapped entrepreneur why not check it out and see how you can make the most of this great site.

Awhile back I bought a My Own Business handbook from myownbusiness.org and have been using it to develop my new business venture. In it they ask you to do the following activity to determine if either what you are doing is working or if what you plan to do will work. I am going to share with you my answers on these questions.

Questions To Evaluate The Business You are in or Have In Mind

Is it something I will enjoy doing? Yes
My favorite activities are: writing, research, internet, learning new things, staying active
I like to serve people by:helping them succeed so they can live a better life
Will it serve an expanding need for which there is no close substitute?Yes
Can I be so good at a specialized, targeted need that customers will think there is no close substitute? yes
Can I handle the capital requirements? Yes
Can I learn the business by working for someone else first? yes
Could I operate as a hollow corporation, without a factory and with a minimum number of employees? n/a
Is this a product or service that I can test first? yes
Should I consider a partner who has complementary skills or who could help finance the business? Not at this time, but is something I may do in the future.

As an internet consultant I would already have the equipment needed to do the job which is a PC, an internet connection and a modem so the need for raising capital would not be a concern. Also I believe in going the extra mile for people as I am a visual learner I would show them how to do something as well as tell them as I feel it is better to watch and learn. I mentioned this before but as an individual being the one responsible for all the operations of your business you have to at least have a working knowledge of various aspects of running your business.In saying that I do think that I would serve a need and give specialized services. I answered n/a to the hollow corporation as it is defined as a company that subcontracts manufacturing and packaging. Since I don't have any manufacturing or packaging needs that is obviously a moot point.

What is an Internet Consultant and Why did I choose to become one?

Since this term is obviously not in Websters I will break it into two definitions.

Websters Online has this definition for internet.

Internet: : an electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world

Consultant:
1 : one who consults another
2 : one who gives professional advice or services

In looking at these two definitions my take on an internet consultant is one who advises an individual or business how to navigate the internet to get the most out of their time on the internet.

The reason I decided to partake on this journey into this type of career is that hey I was a newbie to the internet at one time and trust me I have had my fair share of trial and error when it comes to figuring things out. I had to do most of my learning on my own in the form of searching through sites to find how to articles, and tutorials. I was proud of myself for being able to learn how to set up an email account back in 1998. Now 11 years later I have mastered blogging, forum management, chat rooms, and the myriad of social networking sites as well as Twitter the top micro blogging service out there today. I have seen so many folks out there struggling to figure out the basics and it hit me why not use all of my experience over the last 11 yrs to help those who are and will inevitably be new to the internet.

For instance some who have businesses online still do not know what a blog is or if they do know what one is they don't know why they need one in addition to their main site. Then there are those who may have been blogging for a little while but have not really done much with it and suddenly look at their stats only to find that they could be doing a lot more to get traffic so they want advice on how to inject nitros oxide into their blog to get it to perform better. Some folks don't even know how to read their stats.

That is where I come in I help them make small changes to their back end to help them get a boost. I also help them understand their back end. In today's economy it is imperative that a solopreneur knows as much as they can to help their bottom line.

Entrecard Blog Review :Ricks World

The other day I was going through the advertising section of the Entrecard Market and I came across this great blog titled Rick's World. Rick is a recovering alcoholic who shares his struggles with staying sober in a very personal yet blunt manner. I could feel his optimism as I read one post where he talks about how good he felt being sober for six months. I am not a recovering alcoholic but I have had my fair share of being with mean drunks who never cared to recognize that they had a problem. I have respect for those that do and I also respect them even more when they are willing to really put themselves out there publicly as Rick has done with his blog writings. If you follow my blog, you should also follow his and try to encourage him with positive thoughts and energy to keep up the good fight against the demon that is alcoholism.

Four Things Your Business Blog Should Have (minimum)!

Yesterday I was presenting in the Friday Markets over at SBRN and I gave the following advice:

There are four things that your business blog should have.

It should have an RSS subscribe button either in the top right hand corner of your blog or top left hand corner of your blog so that folks who use RSS service such as Google Reader can have a way to add your site to their reader. It should be above the fold and easy to find. For those who are new to internet terminology the fold is the area above the scroll.
You should have contact information readily visible or easy to find. You need to have your name, address, email and phone number so that people who come to your site can get a hold of you while they are still on your page or site. If your phone number is there and you just happen to be near the phone when someone calls to inquire about your services then that also provides a way for you to increase their time on your site while they are looking through it and talking to you about your goods or services.Of course the email information also helps then they can email you while still having your page or site open thus still providing another chance to keep them on your site longer while they have to switch back and forth between email client to your site. By having your mailing address present that further solidifies your business as a real entity. Even if your in an MLM and use their company generated software.
If you run a blog and write consistent postings about your business happenings and ups and downs as well as informational articles related to your industry then you need a social bookmarking button at the foot of each post so they have one touch access to easily spread the word about your business across the social networks. You can see here at the bottom of my posts I have a Stumble This button and a Socialmarker.com button in the side bar that enables people to click and submit.
Last but not least you should have picture of yourself on your site so folks can have a way to identify you with your site. This should preferably be with your contact info, or on your about us area.

As you can see with my blog here I have my RSS subscribe in the top right hand corner of my right side bar along with an email subscribe area. Below that I have my contact info with my picture and I have my social networking submission buttons at the footer of each post. I am going to be a vendor for the Small Business Referral Network's Self Made Business Expo '09. This will be a chat based expo format and should provide some valuable services and resources for anyone in the business sector. Pro's and Con's to Building an Internet Consulting Business

So I am starting to ask folks what they think are some Pro's and Con's in starting an internet consulting business as that is one business I am contemplating. The reason I am asking people first instead of doing the list first myself is that I want to see what they have to say as I am going to be serving their needs.

My friend Andrew had this to say

Pro's

world wide clients
inexpensive to start,run and maintain
can be profitable once people see you as a trusted person

Con's

need to specialize
difficulty finding clients at first
verification of oneself and clients
online clients hard to find due to "noise" on the internet
finding people to help get the word out

I can see the "noise" on the internet there is always that next big "guru" trying to sell you some magic pill to get you more money. I am not that person.

I am a lather, rinse, repeat person when it comes to learning and teaching.

Getting the word out well that is tricky for any business that you go into. You have to be creative in getting people to notice that your there. What has worked for me is social networking via Skype, the various Ning groups I belong to and the networking chatrooms I come across.

Now of course there is Twitter, Facebook, LinkdIn, Small Business Networks, to name more ways to get your name out there. The fact is you have to do the work to get your name out there and if you aren't willing to do the work than ultimately you have no one to blame but yourself for not doing as well in your business as you had hoped to.

Oh yeah did I mention I am blunt. I will tell you what you need to hear not what you want to hear.

Wildheart's Work's is Officially Branching Off

Ok this has been almost a 6 month thought process for me and I have realized it is time that I branch off and split my digital design blogging and my internet how to blogging.

Once I get my .com settled again it will be only for digital design related topics and information as it was originally intended to be. This blog for the time being will be my new home for internet how to topics and resources.

To get started in that direction here is what I am currently up to.

I am presently trying to decide on about 6 business ideas and those ideas are as follows:

Internet Consulting or Consultant
Digital Designer
Internet Resource Center
Social Media Marketing
Business Coach or Coaching
Digital Art Resource Center

Now I realize that with item two and six I am already doing that on my digital design blog. However, with one,three,four,and five I now have to sit down and figure out some pro's and con's to doing each one as a separate business or see if I can offer them as an individual plan for one main business. So that is what I will be starting to do tomorrow.

I Hope Adobe is Able to Bring This to Fruition

I plan on writing more about this video this week.

As promised I am sitting here and writing more on this promising technology that Adobe is hoping to have out in the hopefully near future. There are a few ways that one could make this work in Paint Shop Pro now albeit not as great as they are making it work here in the video. The point to point manipulation is similar to the mesh warp tool in Paint Shop Pro. Using different points in the mesh grid you can manipulate features of a face together. If you wanted to make it more of an animated approach though you would need to have Animation Shop or Adobe After Effects as Dan Goldman mentions. I have Animation Shop and use it rarely, but it is still useful to have. I got it when I got my Paint Shop Pro 9. It came free with the software.

One thing that I though was cool was the ability to draw graffiti text on moving objects. If you watch the video you will see him put the words Taxi on a moving Taxi. What I really like is the way to add cartoon style call out effects to a home movie or whatever video you want to play around with. The technology is the same as the technology they use to mimic and create human like movements in video games and computer graphic animation movies. Using point to point motion sensors the call out attaches itself to the moving object and is able to move with the object. Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop have preset shapes or brushes that can be used to create a similar effect but it is more or less a static effect that doesn't allow for movement. Unless you use Animation Shop to create the effect and still at that the process is long and tedious.

This new technology in image manipulation would take minutes even hrs off of photo editing as we know it today.

I am taking a survey to get a better idea of what people in the design industry and also the people who are more casual users are using for their digital design program of choice and how well they understand how to really use them. Keep in mind this is not in anyway being used to harvest emails or to throw you on a SPAM list. I am using the answers for my own purpose of collecting information so I know how to better serve my readers in the coming year as well as give me a starting point in starting to create some additional services for my readers.

I also have a channel on Ustream Tv set up for digital design, but have not done anything with it until I could have the chance to start getting some survey's together to have an understanding of what people know and understand about digital design before I launch my first broadcast.

StumbleUpon and Google-How it can Help Digital Designers Track Their Analysis

I told my friend Jonathan I would show him what I meant in regards to how the power of a Stumble helps you in the Google scheme of things. As you can see my friend artsytina discovered this post and it has been given two thumbs up in the Internet category. So if you don't have a whole lot of time some days when you are doing some quick analytical research of your site then this is a quick easy way to do some spot analysis.

Wildheart's Works on Squidoo

Carly's Paint Shop Pro Brushes Lens on Squidoo has Wildheart's Works on Squidoo listed in her related lens search section. Pretty cool for me. Not sure how much traffic I get from her lens it was just interesting finding this out. By the way I am going to check out her brush pack and download it for my own Paint Shop Pro brush files.

My Widget at Entrecard get's some attention, but not good attention.

Over at Entrecard Xploited I received a dishonorable mention about my widget design looks like I got top mention in graphic design. Ok not something to brag about but I just thought it was interesting that someone actually took the time to include me in an Entrecard write up. Here is what they had to say.

So what did I learn about this little trek into where my blog is being marketed and mentioned. One it pays to monitor your blogs activities not only promoted by you but others as well by doing a Google search. Two you should be doing this every week if you want to keep a high quality blog no matter what your niche is.

The only thing that bothers me about this post is that he could have mentioned what the two blogs he pin pointed could be doing better instead of just saying there is no excue for this. I have to say in my defense I am continually learning how to use my programs and a lot is trial and error. Some times I get lucky and sometimes I don't and ever so often I amaze myself. We are not perfect by any stretch. I am a work in progress and try hard to learn from my mistakes.

I take criticism with grace and use it to make myself better.

In Honor of Veterans Everywhere

Veterans everywhere have my deepest respects. I come from a line of military men. My father served in The Korean War, my uncle John served in 'Nam, my grandfather served in WW2, my ex Mark served in the army national guard for over 20 yrs and finally retired this year, and my sons father served in the army. I wanted to just take a moment on my blog to remember these men as well as the men and women who make monumental sacrifices to keep our country free.Not to mention the ones that have fallen in battle, been POW's, are MIA and our fighting forefathers before us.

No matter what is wrong with this country you have to admit that there is plenty that is still good. Just look at the fact that gas prices have finally fallen. Now you can fill up for a $20 bill again if you have a vehicle that has a 4 cylinder that is. Well ok even if you have a 6 cylinder or an 8 and they have had good upkeep you can get great gas mileage.

So for all you do This Blogger's Respect for You!

Great Graphics at Smashing Magazine

I was checking out what's new with my friends at StumbleUpon and fastfastlane stumbled this great site Smashing Magazine. If you are a graphics junkie like me this site has a vast array of graphics for everything from icons to header graphics to some very classy Word Press themes. They also demonstrate a solid example of matching advertisers with ones blog and company niche.

The header graphic for my blog is from their freebies section. I just added the font.

I encourage you to check these folks out they are worth taking a look at. They are also a valuable site to have in your bookmarks for easy access to what is a comprehensive tool for web site graphics and how to's.

Things to Consider When Using StumbleUpon

While guest blogging for Scraps of Mind I came across a plug for another fellow Blog Mastermind student and 30DC Veteran Caroline Middlebrook, and her StumbleRush program. Being the start up supporter I am I decided to take her trial program and see what she put together.

There are a few points I want to make about Lesson 2 though. She states

If you rely on votes from the same people over and over you will see your traffic steadily fall and it could even stop entirely. StumbleUpon carefully collects statistics about the sites that its users vote for and if they continually vote for content on the same website, each vote has less of an impact than the last until it has no impact at all.

I beg to differ on this because I have seen my traffic spike from repeat Stumbles from more regular Stumble users. I have even come across Stumble reviews I hadn’t anticipated. I found these by way of checking my stats on MyBlogLog by the way.

She says that StumbleUpon will never serve the same page twice to the same user. I disagree with this only because it has happened to me, but rarely.

One thing I whole heartedly agree with her on is that if I come across a page while Stumbling that has excessive graphics and I have to scroll halfway down the page to get to any content, it becomes a distraction. Unless I am looking for sites that cater to digital artists / graphic designers then it is another matter. However, I don’t want to see a bunch of stuff that doesn’t make any sense to the page in order to find the artists work.

She mentions inserting a nice looking image near the top of your content. I recommend a graphic of 150 by 150 but not greater than 200 by 200. Otherwise unless your showcasing art or photographs over sized images intertwined in content is irritating.

Pages that are slow to load I just Stumble right on through them. Non existent or error laden pages I have admittedly made this mistake before I switched hosting providers and forgot to set up my redirects.

Ads I don’t mind them but it shouldn’t be blatant on the pages you get people to Stumble for you. I also abhor the use of pop up and pop under ads. I have Ad Block plus for Firefox installed just for these two reasons. It has also eliminated excessive banner ads found at the top of a lot of pages.

My Own Entrecard Traffic Expirement

I decided to start this experiment while reading the Entrecard blog
post Startup Blog Project Part 1. Now I know Wildheart’s Works is not
a start up blog and has been out there for at least two years and last
year gained major momentum as a serious blog after moving it to its
new home on Word Press last Oct. However, I wanted to see if by

traffic to my blog.

In his first phase he sets a goal of 100 drops per day on relevant
blogs in his niche as well as making 17 comments on those respective
blogs per day. For my experiment I am just targeting drops at this
point and will implement commenting at a later time. Now one thing he
mentions and I will stress it too is that you have to find a niche you
are passionate about or at least actively interested in discovering
new things in a niche that you always wanted to explore.

I chose to drop in the categories of graphic design, computers and
internet and internet marketing. One thing that makes this whole
process a lot easier is if you install the Entrebar if you are using
Firefox as your browser. If you aren’t using Firefox as your browser
the Entrebar will not work in any other browser so I recommend if you
decide to try this that you at least install Firefox as a back up
browser. On a side note I have kept Safari and Flock as backup
browsers in case my Firefox gets a bug in it or something. I need
Safari to access my schools web site as it does not support the latest
version of Firefox. My school needs to get up with the times in a
major way.

I started my endeavor on the 21st and had 520 credits. I ended this
phase of my project on Aug 23rd with 849 credits. During this time I
accrued 6 advert display credits, received 13 drops and
drhowell.net.blog gifted me with 10 credits just for stopping by his
blog during this time. I also bought an advert for 64 credits. This
contributed to the generating of 35 hits to my blog from Entrecard
users. My next phase is going to be going back to the 100 drops per
day and then finding good well put together blogs that match or
closely match my niche and making 17 comments per day.

I was looking around the internet -imagine that- and found a site that teaches animations for Animation Shop and thought it has been a very long time since I worked with Animation Shop. So I decided to make some glitter tiles tonight. I hope you like them.

New Banner for Kansans and Friends I Like It!

I put this together for my main site and message board tonight and I thought it looked really good it took me less than 15 minutes to make because I knew what look I was going for. I have been doing a site redesign and clean up over at my main weight loss portal site and I have to say for only being able to use free to use resources found via Tripod and what I have and I think it has turned out really good. I like the vertical navigation bar as opposed to the horizontal one I had up there.

I am doing a slight redesign of my message board too to match the new banner.

I am also going to be working on making some new paint shop pro frames after my son goes back to school.I encourage you do stay tuned for that I have what I hope are some fresh ideas.

I have also been going back to my favorite gradient trick site and seeing what else I can experiment with.
