At first I thought the searcher being directed here was a mistake, but then I did the search myself and found the first comment on this old post.

The search phase was: “Jay Burgess” Oregon

Funny how a comment by that author and a mention and link to Oregon Tilth by me in the post can put the post at the top of a search like that.

One of the links in the article shows how to set one of the most effective traps without getting frustrated.
Original Article From: Healthy Living For People And Planet Earth

Or maybe I should say how to be unsuccessful trapping gophers. Much to the relief of the little furry devils that have decided this year my garden is the place to tunnel and reproduce; I am not one of the great trappers of all time. As a matter of fact I make Bill Murray look like the best that ever chased one of these pocket gophers. Maybe that’s it. Word has gotten out that my gardens are the safe place to spend the summer. Well…. “things are going to change” I said as I headed to the store to buy a few new traps. Yes things are going to change.

Now you might ask, (you might if you are not a gardener), why we can’t live with a few gophers in the garden. After all we are all creatures of the earth, right? As is said, if you have to ask…….. Anyway a single gopher can wipe out an entire garden if left to its own devices. I have way more than a single gopher. My garden is in big trouble.

For many years I have owned a couple of box type traps to go after the occasional gopher that takes up residence. Once in a blue moon I catch one, but usually I think it is all my digging and disrupting their burrows setting the traps that convinces them to go somewhere else. This year nothing deters them. After returning from the store with a couple of Macabee traps, a new Victor box trap and one other brand I can’t remember the name of, I set about the dirty business. The Macabee, (I think a better name would be “Macabre” look awful. If these things are as deadly as they look the gophers are in big trouble. I set one of these a few days ago and supposedly they are fool proof and very successful as long as you remember to tie a string to it and stake it to the ground. Nothing yet. The really weird story involves the Victor box trap.

Now these things are large and made of heavy plastic, one is pictured above. If a gopher is trapped in one of these, it is probably instant demise. There is no way a pocket gopher could move the trap. I dug out the entrance to one of the gopher tunnels and set the trap. The next morning I walked out to the front field where one of my vegetable gardens is to check. The trap was gone. No evidence of anything, just gone. I looked all over and it could not be found. Now what the???!!! At first I thought alright, I am not so young any more, did I really set it where I thought I did? Did I even set it at all? Because I have been eating my vegetables and hence have no memory issues, I realized I did set it and it was really gone.

After much thought all I can come up with is this possibility. We live in a place where there are skunks, opossums, raccoons, coyotes, and even foxes. What I am thinking is this. Maybe a gopher was caught and one of the larger animals smelled it, grabbed the gopher and the trap and dragged it off into the underbrush to eat the gopher. Maybe I am crazy, but that is all I can come up with???? So I guess I will have to buy myself another of these traps and secure it somehow when I set it. In the meantime I need to go outside and tend to the other traps I have going. If I can’t get rid of the ##$$!!!%% **!!!, I mean gophers, it won’t be for lack of trying.

One of these commenters is a real person as I actually got an email form them asking why I was removing their comments. This person was leaving multiple, not very good, comments. They all had different links, most to profile pages like the ones above. Their email not only wanted to know why their comments were not being allowed, but claimed that they were a big fan and had hurt feelings when their comments were edited or removed. Weird!

One of them is a favorite of mine, geocaching.com. This is bad news coming at the start of a long weekend when thousands of people will be heading out to find some geocaches. Fortunately I have several queries that run and download automatically, so I have fairly current data on my PC to work with. I do bet many players in this high tech game of treasure hunting are pulling their hair out right now. Hopefully the folks at Groundspeak will be able to pull something off to work around the problem. Probably not how they wanted to spend their 4th weekend though.

Several recent studies have shown that people who eat lots of veggies perform much better on memory tests. One study of older adults showed that the higher their vegetable consumption, the slower their rate of cognitive loss. This is not really breaking news, but what these follow-up studies have done is confirm the results of research done previously. The great thing was that less than 3 servings a day was able to slow their cognitive decline by over 40 percent! I wonder if those of us that regularly eat more than 3 servings per day have even better results?

There was one thing that bothered be a bit reading the news of these studies. Several times I saw a statement along the lines of “researchers who looked at fruit consumption found no corresponding benefit”. In other words veggies help, fruit does not. I did not see one person who questioned this statement. Here is the issue I have with that. Some of the items on the list of beneficials were tomatoes, zucchini, squash, and peppers. All of these we call vegetables, but they are really fruit. If there is one thing I think would make this research easier to digest, it would be to have a list of “vegetables” rated from best to least effective in terms of cognitive benefit. I did see one researcher quoted as saying the most benefit came from dark, leafy, greens. That makes sense.

One last thing was looked at in these studies. Researchers found that people who took large amounts of supplements, rather than increasing their vegetable consumption, showed no cognitive benefit. This confirms what other studies have shown. There are many phyto-compounds in vegetables in addition to the vitamins that benefit human health. There is virtually no research that does not show many different kinds of health benefits from eating a plant based diet. The results always show, the more the better. No matter what your current eating habits are, you will benefit from eating more plants.

Ok, not so wordless this week, but in the past whenever I tried to take a photo of the rain, you could never actually see the rain in the shot. This photo is nothing special, but I did like the lighting, although it was much more dramatic in reality than in the photo. But… you can see how hard it was raining and this is a first for me.

I missed WW last week, but I did post the answer to the photo question from WW on June 10th. Check it out and see if anyone guessed correctly.

And last but not least, please try to put a link to your site in the Mr Linky box below. He has been having trouble getting the widget to work correctly and I would like to test if it has been fixed.

Thanks!
