I like to post photos of the Charles & Martha Brown House on 1st Ave. from time to time to see the progress volunteers have made to renovating the structure. I last posted a photo of the house back in April, and it’s looking pretty darned good.

The Brown House is significant because it was Stayton’s first hospital, is over 100 years old, and is just a beautiful house. You can read more about the Brown House on its web site.

Guest photographer Jon Goodman sent in today’s photo of a Stayton sight I’ve never noticed before. His description:

This roadsign sits on a pole on the cannery’s property where Gardner tees into Washington. Maybe that’s why it’s never been removed. This is one of the last of it’s kind locally. It’s a reminder of a time when Washington was part of the main route up the canyon.

I actually attended the cruise-in last Wednesday, but today was the first day I had open to post the photos. The cruise-in (see their web site, which hasn’t been update for this year), held at the A&W Restaurant on Washington St., happens twice a month from June through September. The show is free, but they sell items and raffle tickets to raise money for the Brent Strohmeyer Memorial Foundation, which offers college scholarships.

I posted photos from the Independence Day parade yesterday, so today I’m posting photos from the fireworks show held at the middle school on Saturday night. Click the link above to see more photos. Unfortunately, I had inadvertently bumped the lens out of focus when I was setting up the camera, so the photos are kind of blurry. I did a better job last year.

Yesterday afternoon was the annual 4th of July parade through town, and I took approximately 58 billion photos. I uploaded a small fraction of that (but still quite a few) and uploaded them to a Flickr photoset. I haven’t added captions, etc., to the photos yet. I’m very tired as I write this, so it will have to wait until later.

I also attended the fireworks show at the middle school last night, and I’ll be posting some photos from that tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Happy Independence Day to all of us who celebrate the day. I’ll be attending the parade and fireworks show today, and, provided I don’t perish in the heat, I’ll be posting photos from those events over the next couple of days.

And finally I’m posting the photos from the final garden I visited during the Santiam Heritage Foundation garden tour last Sunday (see also: Moles’ End, 3rd Ave., Marion St., and Scenic View Dr.). The Bird & Hat Inn is a bed and breakfast with a beautiful sunken garden and lots of pretty flowers and plants all around. The owners do a beautiful job.

Here’s another garden from this year’s Santiam Heritage Foundation garden tour (see also: Moles’ End, Marion St., and 3rd Ave.). It sits on three acres, and is absolutely gorgeous. There are winding pathways, lots of flowers and trees, a pool, awesome statues, and much more. What a way to live.

After a slight detour to post yesterday’s City Daily Photo theme day photo, we’re back to photos from the Santiam Heritage Foundation 9th Annual Garden Tour (see also: Moles’ End and Marion St.).

This house has come a long, long way. It was once rundown, but it’s been brought back to being quite the beauty. The house itself is adorable, and the garden is fantastic… very quiet and serene.

How very cool.

We interrupt your regularly scheduled garden tour post (see yesterday and the day before) to bring you this month’s City Daily Photo theme day, which I had completely forgotten about until yesterday.

The theme is “empty.” I couldn’t take a picture of the inside of my head, so instead I swung by the playground of the public elementary school, because I knew it was likely to be deserted (cue Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out”). During the school year, there are kids on the playground all the time, but not so much during the summer Kids do play on the playground from time to time when school’s out, but they tend to gravitate to the public parks instead.

The photo at right is part of the outdoor covered basketball court at the playground. Man, I wish it had been there when I was a kid at that school. I would have loved it. Ah, well.
