A rather underwhelming field for a race that regularly attracted 16+ horses rated in the high 80’s, only nine have been entered this year and just a handful are in the handicap proper.

Given this wide open opportunity, I reckon the dual purpose gelding ARQOOB can give the best jockey in the line-up, a stamina laid ride at a decent each-way price in our horse racing betting.

14:10 CHESTER – 7½f  Handicap 

PROUD NATION should have enough class to land his debut handicap on the Roodee from a decent enough draw.

Richard Fahey’s three-year-old looked tidy at York last September and this return to seven furlongs will suit him.

Course and distance scorer MIRABEAU won here in October 2024 when there was some juice in the ground and that will be the case again at the weekend.

Roger Varian’s RAAMMEE was well fancied here at the end of May but could only manage to finish two lengths behind Boyfriend.

Joanna Mason is no stranger to landing a big Yorkshire handicap on the Knavesmire and she is of great interest on the fairly weighted FORTIFICATION.

Topuria enters this fight as the 2/13 favourite and those odds tell you everything you need to know about how punters view his place in the sport right now.

The Georgian-Spaniard is unbeaten at 17-0, already a two-division champion, and widely regarded the most technically gifted striker in the UFC at the moment. His ability to neutralise offensive wrestling while simultaneously creating offensive angles has drawn comparisons to the game’s all-time greats. There is very little in Gaethje’s arsenal that he hasn’t seen before.

Gaethje at 15/4 is the outsider, but he is no ordinary underdog. The former interim champion has an extraordinary capacity for chaos, and on a stage as emotionally charged as the White House lawn, the conditions could not be better suited to his style. His path to glory is narrow but not invisible: bully Topuria to the fence early, attack the body and legs, and force enough uncomfortable moments to scramble the scorecards

However, the honest assessment is that Topuria’s precision, composure, and all-round MMA ability make him very difficult to beat by any method. Gaethje’s chin and heart are beyond question, but going 5 rounds against this version of Topuria is a tall order for anyone on the roster.

Pereira vs Ciryl Gane – Interim Heavyweight Title

This is the fight that has divided opinion most sharply in the build-up, and the market reflects it perfectly, with nothing separating the two fighters who are both currently 10/11 to win in the Bout Betting. It really is the toss of a coin.

Pereira is chasing history, a win here could make him the first UFC fighter to hold titles in three divisions, and his momentum leading up to Sunday has been formidable. His knockout power has not diminished at any weight class, and there is a strong argument that the extra size available at heavyweight only makes him more dangerous.

Gane is no straightforward obstacle though. The Frenchman is a former interim heavyweight champion, a supremely mobile striker, and one of the few fighters in any division with the footwork to make a power puncher like Pereira miss repeatedly. His gameplan is clear: stay on the outside, frustrate Pereira, and accumulate rounds.

If he can avoid getting caught in the pocket for too long, he has every tool needed to win a decision.

With the market refusing to split them, this one could genuinely go either way. Pereira’s extra size just tips the scales however, and we expect him to get a result, but Gane won’t put up without a sizeable battle.

Just like the Royal Hunt Cup, the Gosden’s have a very interesting Godolphin-owned contender in the shape of SPY CHIEF (16/1).

Mercedes Still the Team to Beat?

Kimi Antonelli continues to set the standard in Formula 1 this season and arrives in Spain looking to extend his championship advantage. The young Italian has already established himself as the driver everyone else must catch, combining outright pace with a maturity beyond his years.

Barcelona traditionally rewards the strongest all-round package rather than specialist strengths, which should suit Mercedes perfectly. The circuit exposes weaknesses in aerodynamics, tyre management and race pace, areas where the Silver Arrows have excelled throughout 2026.

At even-money, Antonelli remains the standout selection in the outright market. While Spain is rarely straightforward, his consistency and Mercedes’ superiority make him the most likely winner on Sunday.

Russell Ready to Respond

George Russell’s season has occasionally been overshadowed by his superstar teammate, but the Brit remains one of the fastest drivers on the grid. Spain presents an excellent opportunity for him to remind everyone of his credentials.

The Mercedes package should again place him firmly in contention, and with overtaking opportunities greater than Monaco, race pace will play a larger role than qualifying alone.

Barcelona has often rewarded experience, particularly when tyre strategy comes into play, and few drivers understand race management better than Hamilton. A podium finish at 5/2 looks one of the more reliable plays on the board.

Charles Leclerc also warrants some respect at an each-way price of 18/1 in the outright market. The Monegasque has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season and remains capable of challenging if Ferrari can unlock a little more pace across the weekend.

Value in the Market

Max Verstappen remains difficult to ignore at 8/1 despite Red Bull’s struggles recently. The Dutchman has an excellent record in Spain and continues to outperform the machinery beneath him. While a race victory may require circumstances to fall perfectly, a Top 3 finish at 8/13 looks highly achievable.

Further down the order, several midfield teams could spring a surprise, but Barcelona’s demanding nature generally favours quality over chaos. Expect the leading teams to dominate proceedings once again.

That defeat came in a 4-3 thriller against the mighty Germany in March so it would be fair to say the Swiss are in strong form heading into this summer’s competition. They have a deep World Cup pedigree and many believe that they will finish at the top of Group B.

Personally, I can’t see Qatar causing too many problems for this Switzerland side. The Swiss are a polished, well-drilled outfit and they will be buoyed by the fact that the other fixture in the group ended in a draw.

An early goal for the European team will settle any nerves and it could be a fairly comfortable 90 minutes if things go to plan. This is Qatar’s hardest fixture and they’d be best focusing on matches against Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Meanwhile, Bosnia and Herzegovina have kept just one clean sheet in their last nine outings and they will need to stand firm to avoid an early collapse under pressure. South Africa went behind early on Thursday night and never recovered, so the Bosnians will be looking to avoid a similar start.

One thing that Bosnia and Herzegovina have been good at though, is keeping things tight defensively in the opening half. If they can do this on Friday evening, they’ll keep the home crowd quiet and frustration may grow as the game goes on.

Didier Deschamps is just one of three people to win the World Cup as both a player and a head coach, this will bring the curtain down on his fourteen years in charge of Les Bleus and will be hoping his side can go one further having finished as runners-up last time out.

You could say they aren’t the best defensively but that definitely balances itself out with their serious attacking threats, a potential top four of Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola and Kylian Mbappe is enough to send shivers down the spine of the majority of defenders in this tournament, I think this will be the difference for France as they look to lift the trophy for a third time.

What About The Home Nations?
