Six Nations Week Two - Jeff Probyn

The first weekend of the Six Nations saw France run out winners against Italy, albeit in a tighter contest than predicted, the new look England overcome a wasteful Scotland side and Wales upset the odds to claim victory over Ireland.

Rejoining us ahead of week two, former England international Jeff Probyn assesses the performances from last week and tells us what he expects this weekend.

England have a potentially tricky tie against Italy, France host Ireland and Wales take on Scotland in what could be a bruising encounter and Jeff gives us his best bets in the three fixtures.

Enjoy.

Six Nations 2012 Preview - Jeff Probyn

It's all change in the England camp ahead of the Six Nations with Stuart Lancaster at the helm, albeit as Interim Coach, a new captain in Chris Robshaw and a largely new-look squad.

Former England international Jeff Probyn assesses the teams ahead of the tournament to consider whether anybody can stop France justifying favouritism.

In doing so he gives us his outright prediction, followed by a top tournament try scorer and considers the Triple Crown contenders.

Finally, in a weekend of ties with intriguing sub-plots, our expert previews the Calcutta Cup clash at Murrayfield as Scotland host England, Wales' trip to Ireland and France against Italy.

Enjoy.

England are largely friendless for the Six Nations with William Hill pushing their price out to 9/2 to lift the trophy from an original 3/1. England are 4/6 to beat Scotland at the weekend with the Handicap giving them just a two point head-start. Chris Ashton suggests that he will not celebrate scoring a try with Swallow dive but Hills offer 7/1 that he cannot resist & goes back on his word. Hills biggest bet of the campaign is a £17,600 on Scotland at 10/11 with a four point handicap head-start, should the bet win then he will collect a cool £33,600.

William Hill have taken one of their biggest ever Six Nations bets, after a customer in Devon wagered £17,600 on Scotland at 10/11 with a four point handicap head-start.

England 10/1 for Grand Slam - Robshaw 7/1 to score a Try!

Chris Robshaw has been named as temporary Captain for England against Scotland and William Hill offer 7/1 that he scores a try, 8/1 he gets a yellow card and 66/1 a red card. The decision to name both a temporary Captain & Coach is not sitting well with punters who are steering clear of England with the result being that they have drifted from an original 11/4 to 9/2 to win the Six Nations. England are 8/15 to beat Scotland (6/4) with Hills giving Scotland a four point head-start in the handicap betting.

"Chris Robshaw is a very fine player but the temporary nature of both his & Stuart Lancaster's role as interim coach is not filling punters with confidence!" said Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.

Chris Robshaw vs Scotland: 7/1 Score A Try, 8/1 Yellow card, 66/1 Red Card

England Finishing Position: 9/2 Winner, 10/3 Runner-up, 3/1 Third, 3/1 Fourth, 8/1 Fifth, 11/4 Wooden Spoon

England have drifted in the betting for who will win the Six Nations from an original 11/4 to 4/1 and France are favourite at 11/8. The first weekend of games schedules two great matches with England 8/15 to beat Scotland, whilst Ireland are 4/9 to beat Wales .

"Stuart Lancaster has a great chance of getting the job full-time especially if England put Scotland to the sword at Murrayfield next week," said Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.

First Weekend:
1/66 France, 14/1 Italy, 33/1 Draw
6/4 Scotland, 8/15 England, 18/1 Draw
4/9 Ireland, 7/4 Wales, 20/1 Draw

England Next Permanent England Head Coach: 1/1 Jim Mallinder, 7/4 Stuart Lancaster, 9/1 Nick Mallett, 16/1 John Kirwan, 20/1 20/1 Conor O'Shea, 25/1 Graham Henry, 25/1 Dean Ryan, 33/1 Toby Booth, 33/1 Dean Richards, 50/1 Bar

Six Nations Winner: 11/8 France, 5/2 Wales, 4/1 England, 5/1 Ireland, 25/1 Scotland, 150/1 Italy

Super Six Nations: Tom Wood Set To Captain

Early indications from William Hill suggest that the 2012 Six Nations is set to be the closest and biggest turnover event in its history. Hills odds indicate that interim coach Stuart Lancaster will go with Tom Wood, who is the 11/4 favourite to be made Captain with uncapped Owen Farrell 2/5 favourite to step into Jonny Wilkinson's boots and start at number ten.

"All eyes will be on England after their disastrous World Cup, but the odds suggest that it will be the closest Six Nations in recent history, which should be great for turnover," said Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.

Specials:

England Captain For First Six Nations Game: 11/4 Tom Wood, 9/2 Dylan Hartley, 6/1 Chris Robshaw, 9/1 Tom Croft, 12/1 Toby Flood, 12/1 Courtney Lawes, 14/1 Ben Youngs, 16/1 Louis Deacon, 16/1 Ben Foden, 16/1 Owen Farrell, 16/1 Brad Barritt, 20/1 Bar

To Start At Number Ten Against Scotland 4th February: 2/5 Farrell, 7/4 Hodgson

Specials
Lancaster to be given job permanently: 9/4
England to score more than 13 tries: 5/2 Yes 2/7 No
England to score more than 132 points: 4/1 Yes 1/7 No

William Hill Six Nations Winner: 7/4 France, 11/4 England, 11/4 Wales, 6/1 Ireland, 16/1 Scotland, 100/1 Italy

William Hill Triple Crown: 6/4 No Triple Crown, 5/2 England, 7/2 Ireland, 4/1 Wales, 25/1 Scotland

England 11/4 for Six Nations crown

Lancaster 7/2 to get permanent job

William Hill rate England as joint 11/4 second favourites to win the Six Nations with Wales, behind France who are the 7/4 favourites.

With so many uncapped players named in the squad Hills offer 1/1 that two or three of the starting fifteen against Scotland will be uncapped, with 16/1 on offer for Six or more debutants. Despite the attacking nature of the squad Hills do not expect England to score more tries than the thirteen they managed in 2011, offering 2/7 that they score 13 or less and 5/2 they produce fourteen or more.

Should Stuart Lancaster have a blinder Hills are 7/2 that the RFU give the interim coach the role on a permanent basis.

"We like the look of the England squad but there is a chance that the real benefits will not be felt until 2013/2014, as a result France are favourites to win this year's tournament," said Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.

Lancaster to be given job permanently: 7/2

England to score more than 13 tries: 5/2 Yes 2/7 No

England to score more than 132 points: 4/1 Yes 1/7 No

William Hill Six Nations Winner: 7/4 France, 11/4 England, 11/4 Wales, 6/1 Ireland, 16/1 Scotland, 100/1 Italy

William Hill Triple Crown: 6/4 No Triple Crown, 5/2 England, 7/2 Ireland, 4/1 Wales, 25/1 Scotland

William Hill Grand Slam: 8/13 No Grand Slam, 4/1 France, 6/1 Wales, 8/1 England, 14/1 Ireland, 66/1 Scotland, 500/1 Italy

Munster take their weakened team to Ravenhill to face what is expected to be a strong Ulster team on Friday.

Ulster have only lost three times in the last 15 games at home and William Hill make them 2/5 to win this match again with Munster 15/8.

Munster are 11/4 second favourites to win the regular season in the RaboDirect PRO12 behind Leinster while Ulster will need more than impressive home form if they are to get anywhere near the top of the table, offered at 33/1.

"Ulster have saved their best players for this game, while Munster used their best side on Monday as they defeated Connacht," said Hill's spokesman Joe Crilly. "It looks as though Ulster's fine home form is set to continue."

Enjoy.

England 9/2 for Six Nations - Ashton 7/1 to swallow his words

England are largely friendless for the Six Nations with William Hill pushing their price out to 9/2 to lift the trophy from an original 3/1. England are 4/6 to beat Scotland at the weekend with the Handicap giving them just a two point head-start. Chris Ashton suggests that he will not celebrate scoring a try with Swallow dive but Hills offer 7/1 that he cannot resist & goes back on his word. Hills biggest bet of the campaign is a £17,600 on Scotland at 10/11 with a four point handicap head-start, should the bet win then he will collect a cool £33,600.

"At present it seems to be anyone but England with France & Wales the two teams that are proving most popular," said Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.

First Weekend:
11/8 Scotland, 4/6 England, 18/1 Draw
1/66 France, 14/1 Italy, 33/1 Draw
4/9 Ireland, 15/8 Wales, 20/1 Draw

Handicap:
10/11 Scotland (+2), 10/11 England (-2)
10/11 France (-20), 10/11 Italy (+20)
10/11 Ireland (-5), 10/11 Wales (+5)

England Number Of Six Nations Wins: 40/1 None, 9/1 One, 5/2 Two, 7/4 Three, 3/1 Four, 10/1 Five

England Finishing Position: 9/2 Winner, 10/3 Runner-up, 3/1 Third, 3/1 Fourth, 8/1 Fifth, 11/4 Wooden Spoon

William Hill Grand Slam: 8/13 No Grand Slam, 4/1 France, 6/1 Wales, 8/1 England, 14/1 Ireland, 66/1 Scotland, 500/1 Italy

Rugby Union World Cup Final Preview - Jeff Probyn

Marc Lievremont has managed to guide a disappointing French team to the final of the World Cup and even though there is still descension in the camp, the players have developed a 'siege mentality' ahead of the final against New Zealand.

The All Blacks have breezed through the tournament and they will expect to secure the title at Eden Park. Talksport's Jeff Probyn gives us the best bets ahead of the third place play-off and the final of the RU World Cup.

Enjoy.

The odds suggest that Wales will be on tryscoring form against France, with Hills offering 8/11 that they score two or more tries but their defence is expected to be solid and France are 5/6 to score one or no tries. Wales start as 4/5 favourites with France 11/10.

"The momentum is defiantly behind Wales and our customers are backing them in the outright, the handicap and even the try markets - it is simply one way traffic all the way to Wales," said Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.

Rugby Union World Cup Update: 6th October - Jeff Probyn

Dan Carter's injury has added another dimension to the World Cup and the betting for the outright has changed significantly following his retirement from the tournament.

The All Blacks have strength in depth but the loss of Carter will surely be detrimental to their chances. Dave Kelner asks Talksport's Jeff Probyn about the impact on New Zealand and the two of them discuss the betting ahead of the quarter-finals.

England and France both have problems and it will be interesting to see how Toby Flood fares at number 12. Listen now to Jeff's betting advice ahead of this weekend's matches.

Enjoy.

Rugby World Cup: England favourite to beat France

England are now 17/2 from 9/1 to win the World Cup after their narrow win over Scotland. Hills make England 4/9 favourites to beat France who are offered at 7/4. Chris Ashton is the now just 2/1 from an original 33/1 to be the tournament top try scorer and England are 2/1 to make the final. Scotland were unlucky in defeat and William Hill have trimmed them from 20/1 to 16/1 to win the Six Nations with England 2/1 behind France at 7/4.

"England backers will not have enjoyed watching that performance but the good news is France were even worse and if you could chose to play any of the likely Quarter finalists you would probably go for les Bleus!" said Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.

Quarter Final: 4/9 England, 7/4 France, 18/1 Draw

Handicap: 10/11 England (-5), 10/11 France (+5), 16/1 Handicap Tie

Chris Ashton: 2/1 For Tournament Try scorer

England Stage Of Elimination: 6/4 Quarter Final, 5/2 Semi Final, 2/1 Runner Up, 17/2 Winners

World Cup Winner: 1/2 New Zealand, 8/1 Australia, 17/2 England, 9/1 South Africa, 14/1 France, 16/1 Ireland, 25/1 Wales, 200/1 Argentina 2500/1 Italy

Martin Johnson To Be Coach Of England on Day One Six Nations 2012: 1/6 Yes, 7/2 No

Six Nations 2012: 7/4 France, 2/1 England, 4/1 Ireland, 11/2 Wales, 16/1 Scotland, 100/1 Italy
