But, more than half of the users on Twitter follow a music artist and eight of the top 10 most followed accounts on Twitter are musicians.. Tony Wang, managing director for Twitter UK spelled it out at the company’s Twitter4Brands conference this week: “Music is the heartbeat of Twitter”."
We put them to the test! | PCWorld: "Social media sites already offer free advertising in the form of tweets and Facebook posts, but these tools can only take your brand so far. The next step involves paying for social media ads, and if you're considering this option, you're probably most concerned with one big question: What will my return actually be? Will spending money on an ad on Twitter or Facebook bring more customers to my business than the same amount spent on Google AdWords?"
With the evolution of social media this instant gratification is not only possible but prevalent. There are several forums available to the consumer at large the choice is all based on your wants, needs and who you are trying to reach.

You may be looking to use a particular type of medium to get your story across or perhaps you’d rather not be limited to 140 characters to say what you have to say. The social media phenomenon has had a profound effect on how businesses run. This change is most noticeable in the music industry where the record label role has drastically changed. They are no longer the middle man between the artists and their fans because the creation of music related social media sites enabled them to communicate directly."

Social Media Buzz! - Forbes: "Social media has become an indispensable part of the music business. It used to be that winning a Grammy was one of the best way for a new artist to enter into the public imagination. Now, they enter through social media, and the Grammys naturally follow.

Awards like the Grammys and the Oscars have always been a balance of critical recognition and popularity contest, but social media has shifted the equation a bit. Since building followers on Facebook and Twitter (etc.) correlates with commercial success (in terms of live show revenues if not actual record sales) it is hard to tease out how much of that popularity contest is judged on the basis of social campaigns."
That's .005 DOLLARS, not .005 cents. That's off by a multiple of 100. Many acts, such as Grizzly Bear, took that incorrect math and tweeted to their fan base with extrapolated, incorrect assumptions about what artists get paid, and I watched scads of people retweet that misinformation, with the inference that Spotify and/or other elements in the music industry are not dealing with artists fairly.

Before services like SoundCloud came along--and before independent tunes got slick, cheap DSLR videos to premiere along with them--Myspace was an easy, free way for artists to get their music out there. And though Facebook eventually won the greater social media war, nothing really emerged to take Myspace’s place in the music world. The Vanderhooks saw it as a "huge gap in the market place. None of the social platforms that were out there were really servicing the artists’ needs." So, over the course of the last 14 months, that’s exactly what they built: a striking new site that gives artists a handsome place to host their music and fans a place to connect with the artists they love.
