There has always been a recognized trinity between the mind, the body, and the therapeutic qualities of music. And the piano, specifically, has been a long-recognized source of remedy for those seeking escape and creative expression. But recent years have also offered a wealth of scientific studies that demonstrate our instincts have always been correct: playing the piano offers proven benefits—from physical and intellectual to social and emotional—to people of all ages.

Let’s Get Physical

Who knew? Those piano lessons we took when we were young offered specific physical benefits to our developing bodies. And piano lessons and practice can also, it turns out, improve the physical health of adults and the elderly. Dr. Arthur Harvey, retired professor at University of Hawaii at Manoa, published a study through the American Music Conference that details the vast physiologic benefits generated by regular musical practice. One obvious boon of regular piano playing, Harvey found, is the sharpening of fine motor skills in children. But playing music, according to Harvey’s research, also “activates the cerebellum and therefore may aid stroke victims in regaining language capabilities.” Additional research revealed that group keyboard lessons given to older Americans had a significant effect on increasing levels of human growth hormone (HGH), which is implicated in slowing such aging phenomena as osteoporosis, energy levels, wrinkling, sexual function, muscle mass, and aches and pains.

The physical benefits of piano playing are even more far reaching. Mitchell Gaynor M.D., in his book Sounds of Healing, demonstrates that music has therapeutic physical effects including reduced anxiety, heart and respiratory rates; reduced cardiac complications; lowered blood pressure; and increased immune responses.

Keys to Better thinking

In addition to the proven body benefits of regular play, piano practice can also boost cognitive and intellectual abilities. Playing piano, in other words, makes us smarter. Research through the years has demonstrated that musical training taps into similar areas of brain function as those used in spatial intelligence and even math. In fact, kids who continue their playing through their teenage years average about 100 points higher on the SAT. In 1994, research revealed, undergraduates who majored in music had the highest acceptance rate into medical school, at 66%.

In a study conducted by E. Glenn Schellenberg of the University of Toronto at Mississauga in 2011, researchers split 132 first-graders into four separate groups for after-school activities. One group was given singing lessons, one was given drama lessons, another piano lessons, and the last was offered no after-school instruction. All of the students’ IQ’s were evaluated at the end of the year. Those who participated in the piano lessons saw an IQ increase of 7 points, while the other groups saw an increase of 4.25 at most. The researchers concluded that the fact that piano education requires one to be focused for long periods of times contributes to the greater IQ gains in the piano-playing group.

1.)   A goal to achieve:   Something changes in a student’s attitude when there is a goal to achieve.  There is a sense of urgency, nervousness, and a most importantly;  a DEADLINE.  Now that a student has a recital to look forward to, they practice more often.  The student is more engaged in their practice routine.  And this excitement carries well after the recital and students are more likely to work harder.

2.)   A performance experience:   Playing in a recital is a valuable experience for young players.  As they continue playing chances are that there will be many performances down the road.  Performing in front of people is generally not easy and requires a lot of practice.  However each time you play in front of an audience it gets easier.  This type of experience helps students with confidence and overcoming anxiety.

3.)   A sense of pride and accomplishment:   This is the most important benefit of all for the student.  The student have worked very hard and faced their fears and at the end of it all, they are met with a wave of applause from a smiling audience  This is the moment that the student feels special and appreciated for all of their hard work.  This is the moment that makes it all worth it.  It is a beautiful thing to be able to share music with a crowd of appreciating listeners.  Enjoying this moment at a young age can help the students to become more confident and boost their self-esteem.

So despite all the hard work involved, in the long run, the students, teachers, and parents find it very rewarding.

Illegal logging is coming to a halt in the Amazon.  

It is no secret that the trade of illegally logged timber is on the rise, especially in the Amazon, but does that mean that it is easy to do? Not necessarily. With the forests diminishing the Ka’apor people started setting up surveillance cameras throughout Reserva Alto Turiacu, in the Amazonian part of Maranhao, Brazil, in hopes to track and catch tree thieves. Most have no idea the violence, threats, and even deaths that occur surrounding the illegal trade of wood when they go furniture shopping. They also don’t know how technology can help save those who suffer from the logging industry. There is a technology initiative that has been created by Greenpeace, activists who strive to help vulnerable communities in need of environmental assistance. The NGO provided training, funded cameras, trackers, computers, and hard drives. You would think, “Okay, cool. They can put the cameras up and track the illegal logging. Problem Solved!” This would be great, although, it is not that simple. On this expedition, the natives, journalists, volunteers had to wake at 3a.m. to travel to the small village. Upon arrival, the group knew they were in the middle of a war zone.

In September 2014, tree thieves were caught in the act of tree removal and were reprimanded by the indigenous people, who have been protecting the forest on their own for quite awhile. In April of this year, an indigenous chief was killed, and a little after that two young Native Brazilians were shot at while riding motorcycles throughout the reservation. The Ka’apor people deem that illegal loggers were at fault for these crimes.

The project is still in the test phase. Monitoring cannot happen in real-time. The cameras used contain an 8GB memory cards and also have an infrared sensor which work in two ways: capturing color combinations or movement, and they only record when something moves (truck, animal, person, and even leaves falling). These special cameras are resistant to extreme temperatures. The videos capture 10 seconds of movement, just enough to catch a truck’s license plate. According to satellite images analyzed by Greenpeace, eight percent of the 530,000 acres belonging to the Ka’por have already been logged. FUNAI (Brazil’s National Indian Foundation) considers the reservation to be the last piece of greenery on Maranhao, and although it justifies intensifying its participation on inspection efforts in the region, the organization is not well regarded by the Ka’por. The world’s population relies on wood. Furniture, homes, heck even guitars, but does that mean we should take what we want when we want without any repercussions? Absolutely not. Wood can be sourced ethically and in an environmentally friendly way. By doing so, it sustains the environment, so when we need wood, there will be trees available to do so.
