The economy is showing signs of recovering. Slow, but steady. To date, WilsonMaclean is about 120% above where we were this time last year. Good, but not great. We’re seeing clients begin to hire key roles, but the landscape has changed and it’s changing in our favor.<br /><br />The 10,000 foot recruiting view in professional recruiting is basic economics – too much supply and not enough demand. Not a great combination. The 100 foot view tells you something very different. Is there still a surplus of talent in the marketplace? Sure, but those “A” players that have not yet been hired are on their way to being someone’s next hire much sooner than later.<br /><br />The hidden reality of a recession is that “A” players – the individuals that you should be paying a professional recruiting fee for, are much less apt to make a move. Sure, they may hate their current job, but it’s much better than taking a leap of faith to join a new company in an era of uncertainty – department consolidations, mergers, acquisitions, and the whole credit market issue. The devil you know is much better than the devil you don’t.<br /><br />Q3 is going to show us a lot. Is this market going to continue making a slow but steady come back or is this really a false promise of hope? Summer months are traditionally slow in the professional search business. Family vacations, travel schedules and kids being out of school throw a crimp in even the best intentions to get key roles filled.<br /><br />I’ve spoken to a lot of people in and around the business. Some firms are doing well, others are still trying to find their footing in this new landscape of fewer placement opportunities, lower placement fees, and more internal recruitment efforts. Those firms dependent on high volume, job-board based recruiting efforts are dead in the water. Clients want and deserve more than some kid sitting in a bullpen trying to bang out his call sheet for the week.<br /><br />Thoughts?
