Vintage High Chair

Better late than never! This post was in the works last July but I am now just getting in up! Yikes!

Last summer, we found an old highchair at a thrift store for $10. The bones were adorable but needed a lot of TLC!

The seat top had a huge crack in it and the top layer of wood was breaking away. We took some wood glue and squeezed it under the cracks. We weighted it down for a day or so before we sanded the entire chair. It's not a perfect fix, but it did what we needed it to do.

We took a few different types of sand paper to clean it up. Since I knew I was going to keep with the "warn" look, I didn't worry too much about sanding all the paint.

I chose Krylon's Pistachio spray pant in satin.

We picked up a small dowel at the craft store to replace the missing one. Once it was in place, the chair was quite sturdy!

We used a small green scarf to secure in the little one as she enjoyed her birthday cupcake :)

DIY Mint Jeans

I have fallen victim to the "Mint Jean" craze but not the price tag that goes along with most of these jeans (well the ones I can find instock).

I figured by the time I found some in the price range I was looking for (under $50), the fad would be long gone! So, like any DIY blogger... I decided to make my own for half of what I set out to find!

Here is how I accomplished my budget-friendly-fad....

Supplies:

1/2 teaspoon Rit Dye - Kelly Green

1/8 teaspoon Rit Dye - Teal

1 cup of water (to pre mix color)

Salt

White Jeans

Washer and Dryer

Laundry Soap

I found the color I was going for on the ColorRit Color Formula Guide:

I went with Green 1 #234

For best results, make sure to follows the directions that are written for your machine. These are the directions that I followed for my machine.

First, take your white jeans, shirt, cloth...whatever you are coloring here and prewash it in warm water. I had to capture the price at which I bought these for... yep, that says $14.99! They are the "Seven" brand and we're originally $78!

Midway through the "spin" cycle, stop the machine and pulled the jeans out. You want them to be wet, not damp. If they are damp, the dye might be uneven.

Second, take 1/4 of a teaspoon of Kelly Green and 1/8 of a teaspoon of teal. Mix them in a glass measuring cup with a cup of water.

Measure out the correct amount of salt according to your specific machine's directions.

Fill your washing machine with enough hot water to easily cover the garments.

Add the dye mixture and salt.

Agitate for a minimum of 30 seconds (I always do closer to 2 minutes!).

Add your WET garment to the mint green water and set your machine to the longest wash setting possible. BEFORE your machine begins to drain and rinse, reset it to agitate for a second (or even third) time. You want the garment to be in the dye for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Wash your garment a few times in hot water with regular soap.

Dry and ENJOY your new DIY Mint Jeans!

Price Breakdown:

Rit Dye: $3.99 x 2 = $7.97

White Jeans: $14.99

Total: $22.96

(*with plenty fo dye to make many more minty things!)

My husband is amazing. This is a known fact. He is the nicest, wholehearted, honest person I have ever met. This Christmas was just one example of his thoughtfulness. I have always wanted the lyrics to our first dance at our wedding to be displayed somewhere in our bedroom. We danced to the song "Magic" by Colbie Caillat (listen to the song here). We have been married for 4 years now and I had yet to create something. This year for Christmas, my husband took that idea and gave me a huge surprise. He created this amazing sign that now hangs above our bed.

Pallet Gun Cabinet

Eric (the hunter) has done it again! Using recycled pallets, he created his very own, custom gun cabinet! It is simply gorgeous. He was kind enough to share photos with me of the process and final product. We are not hunters at the Wilson house, but this is one gun cabinet that I would not mind having in my house!

Heart Shaped Dinner for Valentine's Day

My husband and I hosted a "Heart Shaped Dinner" at our house for Valentine's day. Everyone who came had to bring something heart-shaped to eat. It was fun to see the creativity and it was a great excuse to spend a weeknight with some of our best friends!

Pallet furniture is more than just a phase right now, it's a creative outlet that is catching on like wildfire....and I love it! Our good friends, Melissa and Eric, have jumped on the bandwagon and they have made some amazing things! I asked them to take some photos of their projects so that I could show off my creative friends!

Pallet Coat Rack: Right when you walk in their door, this adorable coat rack (that looks like it's straight from Pottery Barn) hangs on their wall. The dark wood stain and brushed bronze hooks are functional and unique!

Pallet Box: I am still in such amazement over this box. They used wood from an old pallet to create this rustic storage box. I absolutely love the shape and color of it. The slits on the side add character and functionality. This is one of my favorite projects from one of my favorite materials!

Thanksgiving Table

This week's challenge on "Dare to Do It Yourself" is to decorate your Thanksgiving table. Since we were just out of town and are now preparing for company, I am going to have to "cheat" a bit on this one. It took me quite a long time to find the exact look I was going for.
We are not hosting Thanksgiving this year, but if we were, I would love for our table to look something like this:

I have a Kate Spade white and silver china set that I love and would want to highlight. This table decor would be perfect! I love how they spray painted different pumpkins and gourds with metallic paint and left the larger pumpkin white. I also love the unique and formal look with a splash of fall!

Generations

This is not a DIY post.... but I had to share this experinece. This past weekend, my grandmother came to visit to meet our daughter. This is the first great-grandchild for her. A good friend of mine took photos of all 4 generations. It was very moving to see the emotion behind my grandmother's eyes when she held our daughter. It brought tears to all of our eyes. This photo simply makes my heart smile and I thought I would share it with you all.

Pallet Sign - "University of Oregon"

My family are all HUGE University of Oregon fans.....HUGE! A while back I saw an Oregon wood sign and loved it except it was made of really cheap wood and looked almost fake. With my new obsession with pallet furniture, I have seen a lot of signs made with pallet boards. For my brother's birthday, I decided to get creative.....

With my husbands help, we took apart a pallet. Only 4 boards survived the demolition (good thing I only needed 3).

I gave the boards a quick sand with a medium grade sandpaper (I really just wanted to use my new sander)!

Since Oregon has been using a lot of gray in their uniforms, I bought gray wood stain. The photos make it look a tad blue but it turned out to be a really nice gray. The stain went on quite thick so after one coat, I sanded the color down a bit to show more of the wood grain.

Using 4 flat metal brackets, I secured the boards together. I made sure to use flat head screws so that they would not scratch up the wall once the sign was hung up.

I printed out a copy of what I wanted to the "Oregon" to look like and cut out the letters to use as stencils.

I traced the letters onto the pallet boards.

I took dark green acrylic paint and panted in the letters (this was a bit challenging given how uneven the boards were).

Using a yellow paint pen, I traced the letters (even more challenging with the uneven boards).

I twisted wire around 2 of the screws on the back so that it would be easy to hang.

I took ultra fine sand paper and went over the entire sign to take away the "new paint" look. The sign turned out better than I had planned. I can't wait to give it to my brother!!

Chicken Wing Cook Off!

This past weekend, we celebrated my husbands birthday. It was our second annual "Chicken Wing Cook Off". It was such a hit last year that we had to go even BIGGER this year! More people, more chicken, more competition!

Here is how it all went down...

Guests were asked to bring their "Prize Winning" wings (and their favorite beverage of course).

There were 3 categories:

Most Unique

Hottest

Most Phenomenal

I provided the sides: rolls, this awesome coleslaw, this amazing corn salad, and plenty of carrots, celery and blue cheese dip!

Text messages were flying on the day of the competition. Everyone was claiming to have the prize winning wings.

The house was decorated with numerous chickens that I had recruited from family and friends. Here are a few....

Every table had a jar full of wet-naps to help clean off their messy fingers.

As guest entered, I had a table that gave instructions. Guests were to choose a wing number, grab some numbered toothpicks, and fill out the name tag for their wings.

All of the wings were set out for the competition with their name tags and numbered toothpicks.

The competition was on....

Glenn, the reigning champion from the previous year wore the Golden Apron.

Toothpicks were used to mark which number each wing was (something we learned was necessary from the previous year)

The birthday boy enjoyed every second of the tasting.

The debates were heated!

Why did the chicken cross the road?.... to avoid this wing-off!

The votes were in

The tallies were counted

The award ceremony began....

The "MOST UNIQUE" went to the....... Chicken-Wing Dip

The "HOTTEST WINGS" was .......... a tie! (sorry, no pictures of these winners for some reason)

AND THE WINNER OF THE MOST PHENOMENAL WINGS WAS..............

The SWEET MENNOS!

She is now a proud owner of a Chicken Wing Jump Drive, a pint of beer, and the Golden Apron!

Salted Caramel Cupcakes

Salted Carmel Cupcakes

I don't bake. I try. But I don't do it often. So, you could imagine my shock when my husband asked for "Salted Caramel Cupcakes" for his birthday. It was a challenge and I was willing to take it! First off... there is no way that this non-baker was going to start from scratch (there are perfectly good box mixes in the store that are just waiting to be used). Anyway... these cupcakes turned out AWESOME and I am so excited to share the how-to with you all!

I started with a basic cake mix. Why reinvent the wheel... (actually this helped limit the steps that I could possibly mess up). I added an extra egg because I read in some cooking blog that an extra egg makes them a bit more "cake" like. Sure.

I loaded all of the cake batter into a plastic bag and cut off a corner. This was very helpful in loading up all fo the cupcake tins! To store the bag of batter, I placed it in a bowl to hold the hole upright.

Once they cooled, it was time to get fancy. I filled a pastry bag full of caramel flavored topping. I "injected" it into each cupcake. For those of you that actually do bake, I am sure your are cringing at this step. I am sure there is a better way to fill a cupcake, but for someone who does not bake, my $1.99 pastry bag did the job!

Once they were all filled, I took to flavoring the frosting. I bought vanilla frosting, emptied it into my mixer, added some caramel sauce and mixed it up. It had a very mild carmel flavor but more importantly, I liked the color ;) (Or should the flavor be the more important part....??? Hm.)

I then took my nifty $1.99 pastry bag and filled it with frosting. I frosted all of the cupcakes, then placed a small piece of caramel on them (I cut the caramels into smaller pieces for the mini cupcakes), and put a pinch of sea salt on the top.

Wow. They were good.

Yep. We will be making these again. :)

Kalimotxos: This Basque drink was introduced to me by our Basque friends in Idaho... it's now my favorite! If you haven't tried one... I recommend you give it a whirl (or I guess, swirl).

Pugs: I love pugs. Our pugs. Other people's pugs. Fat pugs. Skinny pugs. I simply love pugs. Our two pugs are rescued pugs so I also love Pug Rescues (well, dog rescues in general) and all they do for these lovable animals.

Daughter: Simply put... she has changed our world.

Yoga Pants: Who doesn't love yoga pants?! Seriously.

Bend Oregon: I love this town and all of it's crazy seasons.

Husband: I married the nicest, funniest, most supportive, loving, and kind man I have ever met. He makes me breakfast every day, makes us laugh, supports all my crazy projects, takes amazing care of his family... he is just downright awesome. I am a HUGE fan of this guy... HUGE!

Frye: I feel like this one is a bit of a confession. I look at Frye boots daily. Love them. (These just happen to be the "Jenna" boot... I think they know how much I love them so they named a style after me ;)

Family: I am one lucky gal. I have an amazing family who I love and cherish.

Themed Parties: Who doesn't love a great themed party!? We just had a "Chicken Wing Cook Off" for my husbands birthday. So fun.

Our Home: I am a self proclaimed homebody. I love our home. I love everything about it. I love how all of the rooms have different meaning. I love how easy it is to entertain yet how cozy it feels. I love how we were able to put our own touch on it... and I really love who I share it with.

I bought this beeeeeeeauty off of Craigslist with this bench for $60 all because of it's amazing legs! I fell in love with "The Nester's" office over at The Nesting Place and have used her office as my inspiration for my own office/craft room. My husband thought I was crazy when I looked at the guy and said "we'll take it"! The previous owners attempted to redo the table by sort-of sanding it down then putting a few layers of stain on it. In the end, it was a sticky mess! I simply loved the beveled legs!

Then I sprayed a few layers of primer (I did it the lazy way and used a spray can):

After a few layers of white paint, my table was done!

The table was the final addition to our formal dining room converted into a usable den/craft space.

All of my craft supplies are stored in the armoir (that I scored on craigslist for $0!).

I brought down a desk from our guest room. This is where my husband works.

We love this room for many reasons...

1. Nate has extra space to spread out work if needed.

2. I can do crafts in there and leave them for a few days until they are complete (and not on my dining room table)

3. When we need an extra table, it can be converted back into a dining room table using the 2 chairs and the bench (which we did this past weekend for Nate's birthday party)!

4. Forget that formal living room that never got used! This room is used all the time!

Burlap Wreath

My door (and entire porch) is lacking in the fall decor. Tomorrow night we have my husbands birthday party at our house in which we are expecting 30 people for the 2nd annual Chicken Wing Off (I will post pictures of the party). My front door needed some help...and quick! Last week, Abby sent me a photo of a burlap wreath she had seen at a craft store. I loved it (especially because I am loving burlap these days). This was one of the quickest, cheapest, and cutest projects I have done. It honestly took me less than 30 minutes to do. Here is how I did it....

Supplies:

1yd of burlap

1 metal wreath base

flowers or decor of your choice

1. Cut the burlap into strips (the strips depend on the size of metal wreath base you are using). Play around with different sizes to decide what size strips you want. Burlap makes such a mess so I always put a sheet under my burlap project (or just do all of the cutting outside).

2. Tie the strips around the metal base...and tie...and tie...

and tie...

3. Once you are done, add your choice of decor! Simple, huh?!

I am planning on changing the decor on the wreath for the different holidays.

Baby Crib Mobile

After hours and hours of looking for the perfect mobile for Marlo's crib, I decided to just make her one (shocking!). I am not a fan of the big bulky mobiles that attach to the side of the crib. I am well aware that there might come a time when the lights, music, spinning, vibrations and whatever else those things do might actually come in handy but personally, I like the simple look. She seems to be very interested in anything that has multiple colors and dimension (picture frames on the wall, chandeliers, window treatments, and her all time favorite...fans).

I absolutely love how it turned out (I know I say that about every project I put on here... but that is why it is on this blog. There are many projects that are not blog worthy and therefor end up in a closet or garage). I had purchased Marlo's curtains from World Market. I bought an extra one along with some coordinating fabric and a good friend of mine turned it into her bedding (read more about that here). Since we didn't know if Marlo was going to be a "him" or a "her", I decided to wait on the mobile. Since she is now all girl and has more pink than I ever imagined would be in this house, I figured I had to make the mobile a tad girly.

Here is the process (lots of photos...but it actually only took a few hours)...

Supplies: Cricut, scrapbook paper, a medium embroidery hoop, string or fishing line, and a wooden bead

First, I cut out all of the shapes using the autofill on my Cricut.

I chose to copy the print and colors of the curtains (except I added a little splash of pink to girly it up!)

Using leftover stain, I stained the inside piece of the embroidery hoop. I also stained a small wooden bead to cover the knots holding the hoop in position.

Using a 16 gage needle, I made holes in all of the cutouts.

Using dark brown string, I tied 3 knots before I strung on a shape.

I did 6 shapes on each string and made 9 strings full of random shapes and colors.

I tied each string of shapes onto the hoop keeping them at similar lengths. Next I tied 3 strings onto the hoop and gathered them about 8 inches above the hoop. I placed the bead here to cover the knot. I then cut and attached a long piece of string to attach to the ceiling.

THE REACTION!....

....SHE LOVED IT!!

Burlap Letters

Burlap is one of my new favorite mediums to use. A wonderful friend of mine gave me a few letter W's as a gift (I have a selection of W's throughout the house...I am a huge fan of letters!). I decided to combine 2 of my favorites... burlap and W's! It was a very quick and easy craft and I love how it turned out!

Supplies.

Trace.

Cut.

Glue.

TaDa!

CD Baby Announcement

Nate brought it to my attention that I should put Marlo's baby announcement on our DIY blog. It made sense...we did "DIY" them (with a lot of help from Abby at Monogram Wedding). Well before we had baby girl (back when she was just an idea), Nate made the comment to me that he thought a CD baby announcement would be neat. I was not totally convinced. Once we found out we were pregnant, he got right to work on a playlist for a "boy" and one for a "girl". He had the playlists ready and waiting. Once M was born, he played me the Jack Johnson song "My Little Girl". It brought tears to my eyes. I loved everything about it! With that song, he had me convinced that a CD announcement might actually be a neat idea. I drew up an outline of what we were looking for and sent it off to Abby. Abby put our ideas to work and the CD baby announcement was born!

Marlo's Baby Announcement

We used a photo of M holding onto the necklace that Nate bought me after she was born of her first initial.

The inside flap listed her "baby stats".

The pocket held the CD along with a newborn photo taken of her.

On the back of the photo, we added our favorite line from Jack Johnson's "My Little Girl".

On the back of the envelope, we included M's return address and "M" monogram.

We tied the announcement together with dark brown string and placed them into envelopes to be mailed. The key to mailing CD's is to make sure they hand meter them otherwise the CD can get ruined.

Save the best (and back) for last...

My favorite part was the back of the announcement. We had a photo taken of all 3 of our feet and turned it into a label that we placed on the back of the announcement. Abby had to use photoshop to get the dog hair on my toes (the pugs were determined to appear the announcement somehow). All photos used in the announcement were taken by Alisa Hayes Photography.
