Amber Petty had the right idea about Rejection on her comment about Rachael Leahcar of The Voice auditions.

And I quote; Rachael, and most of the other contestants, share a bond – which is that of rejection. It’s something that nearly every successful person has copped not once, but over and over again, before they eventually made it. But unlike many others, not just in the singing world but everywhere in life, these guys kept coming back.

We get so misled into imagining that a successful person we’ve heard about must have just been lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. Or destiny just gave them a good ride.

But it rarely works like that. Not at first anyway. The real inspiration from this story is not simply about Rachael’s unearthed talent. It’s a lesson that we should all really learn from. How many things have we put on the back burner, procrastinated about, or completely let go because of our fear of rejection? How many times have we attempted to do something to get closer to a dream?

Yet through one knockback, one response that wasn’t exactly what we’d hoped for, or one other’s negative opinion about our idea, have we just fallen in a heap, too scared to push on again?

And the sad thing about how much many of us fear rejection so much is that we avoid it at all costs, and by default end up avoiding nailing the one thing that could transform our lives and lead to so much happiness.

I’ve been putting this new spin on rejection to work lately. In the process I have found myself become less and less afraid of it. I’m getting closer to feeling as if rejection is actually a rather exciting little hurdle and one that doesn’t necessarily mean no.

Every time I get close to really letting go because of my fear of rejection, I simply Google someone I admire and read up on all their early rejections.

I then run round in my head all day thinking, well, so far I haven’t had nearly as many knockbacks as poor old blah, blah, blah had in their day.

People like,

Walt Disney. Despite his success, it wasn’t an easy ride. He was fired as a newspaper editor because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas”. This was followed by the demise of a number of businesses that didn’t last too long, ending in bankruptcy and failure.

Oprah. She may be the most powerful TV woman of our time but there was a period when she was fired as a reporter because she was supposedly “unfit for TV”.

Stephen King. His first book published was his iconic thriller Carrie, which received 30 rejections. He threw it in the bin. His wife encouraged him to resubmit it, and the rest is history.

Michael Jordan. Cut from his high-school basketball team. “I have missed more than 9000 shots in my career, lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I’ve been entrusted to take the game-winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over. And that is why I succeed.”

If these people succeeded why shouldn’t you?

Making money using affilliates

is ok when you are well established in internet marketing, but as a newbie you will be struggling!

I am a newbie and I signed up with Commission Junction as well as others. Through Commission Junction I had an affiliate with GoDaddy and Hostgator, when I referred someone to them I did not get the commission! Why? Because Commission Junction deactivated my account! I had not been active long enough!

The Seventh Step to Achieving Your Desire

Happiness

HAPPINESS is a state of mind. We are responsible for our own mental states, therefore we are responsible for our own HAPPINESS or unhappines. Yet there is nothing like getting the things you want, and feeling the thrill of real achievement, to make you truly happy.

Reaching this state has often given one more genuine HAPPINESS in one year than had been experienced in a previous fifty years, all rolled together. This Seventh Step is like a seventh heaven of delight. This is the step which rounds off all the others; the end of the story which is a clear blueprint for perfect self expression; a master plan for vital living – the end of a story which can be – which WILL be – the beginning of NEW LIFE for YOU.

HAPPINESS IS A STIMULANT

There are many ways of speeding up blood circulation, but the trouble is that most of them also speed up death. The only safe and sure way is through HAPPINESS. HAPPINESS does many other things; it expands the solar plexus and tones up the whole system.

Unhappiness is an anaesthetic, a depressant; it has the same action on the system as is produced by morphine. It slows down the circulation to the extent that it no longer feeds us properly. Emotional balance is disturbed; to a certain extent, reason or judgment is temporarily marred. This is the state in which, quit often, opportunities are lost. Unhappiness is ALWAYS EXPENSIVE.

There is the Happiness of Achievement, and there is the Achievement of Happiness, and one is as important as the other. HAPPINESS is the Greatest Health Producer, the Greatest Youthifier, the Greatest Enhancer of our Personality.

Happiness TODAY means health and wealth, with more beautiful personality TOMORROW, because every day new cells, new baby cells, are being born in our bodies, and other cells are dying and being expelled from our bodies. These new cells, which are as impressionable as a new-born babe, react according to the happiness or unhappiness of our mind.

This process is going on all the time. Wise, and fortunate indeed, is the man who gives his new cells a happy birth. Welcome them with a smile; and they will irradiate, enrich, ennoble and revivify your life, beckoning in a rosy future.

“If I could only begin all over again!” “If I could only be born again!” are exclamations often heard. Yet this- or something very like it- is actually taking place throughout our lives, for vast numbers of these little entities which compose our bodies die every day, and other parts of us are being renewed. Each of us is a universe of these little lives, part of whose inhabitants die every year, and in which babies are born every year.

You and I are the same; but biological science affirms that not a single cell in our bodies can possibly be more than one year old. Thus Nature bestows upon us the power of perpetual renewal. We are indeed, forever YOUNG, in our bodies.

What fresh and wonderful material we are given by the beneficence of the Creator! We shall use this material, these forces, to the very best of our ability, to honour the great laws of Nature, and to achieve our SUPREME GOAL.

Therefore, START TODAY to impress, train and invigorate the millions of new cells daily formed within you toward Health, Youth, Beauty and Strength BY MAINTAINING AT ALL TIMES AN INWARD SPIRIT OF HAPPINESS.

Dwell, now, upon those wonderful words- HEALTH, YOUTH, BEAUTY, STRENGTH. Are they not worth striving for, with might and main? The germs of all these attributes are GIVEN TO YOU. HONOUR and CHERISH; NURTURE and DEVELOP them, AND SO LIVE GLOROUSLY- HAPPILY- as your Maker means you to live.

Materialization

Whenever we set out to do something, or to get something, we should make it materialize in our lives. Whatever it is you set out to get, get it, then wipe the slate clean of that thing, and set out after something else. If you plant a seed, see that it comes up, ripens and is harvested, sowed and disposed of. It must be FINISHED.

If you dream an achievement, make it blossom; make it real; make it come TRUE. In a famous speech, during the early dark days of World War II, Winston Churchill described his dream for the England-yet-to-be. The speech was addressed to America, and ended with these words: “This is the England we dream of fashioning. Give us the tools AND WE WILL FINISH THE JOB.” The dream was the spur, the inspiration; only ACTION would make it a living reality.

I was brought up on this maxim- “Walter, if you don’t want to finish a thing, don’t touch it; but if you do it, see that you do it thoroughly and completely.” Of King George III of England it was said that he was “all things by starts, and nothing long.” About the only thing the unfortunate monarch did was to lose America for England! When once you set your shoulder to the wheel, LEAVE IT THERE until the job is done.

We are told that birthdays are the milestones along Life’s Highway; this is not so. Birthdays do not tell how far one has travelled, but only how long one has been on the road. The undertakings that we finish- those are the real milestones, and, just as a traveller plans to get to his destination by a certain time, so we should set ourselves a sort of time limit for all our big undertakings, otherwise we will not bring them to completion, or use all our powers to get them finished.

We have too small a programme. Get a big programme and make a fixed time limit. This simply drags the power out of you. HAVE COMPLETE FAITH IN THE DEFINITE TIME LIMIT.

Humanity may be divided into three classes:-

THE SHIRKERS WHO NEVER START;

THE STARTERS WHO DO NOT FINISH;

THE SUCCEEDERS, THOSE WHO FINISH.

You have the tools for the job; but have you what it takes to use them properly? OF COURSE YOU HAVE! Gird up your loins NOW, fix that time limit, and FINISH THE JOB.

An observant penman recently made a similar classification to the one set down above, calling people Clods, Commencers, and Completers. A great distance lies between the SHIRKERS and the STARTERS, but there is only a tiny distance between the STARTERS and the SUCCEEDERS, or SURVIVORS as they might be designated. The STARTER has manifested all the traits of Ambition, Initiative, Energy, Courage, Imagination, Independence, and Industry characteristic of the SUCCEEDER; but- and in that “but” lie millions of lost dreams- he is just a little short of that valuable, essential and very-easily-developed quality- continuity or “stick-at-it-iveness,” as it has been called.

This is the ability to keep on keeping on, which turns defeat into victory; which pulls the sun out from behind the clouds; which makes a man say, even though the breath comes heavily at times, “I AM THE CAPTAIN OF MY SOUL.” If YOU are the indomitable stuff of which SUCCEEDERS are made, you will work on, hope on, fight on. If you are baulked in one direction, you will turn with new heart to another. You will KNOW that, somehow, sometime, you will reach your HEART’S DESIRE

OUR GREAT SUPREME GOAL, we will be travelling towards that all the time, untill we attain it. Nothing less than full attainment brings satisfaction. When our great goal is reached, we will probably progress in line, on a greater scale, and obtain more happiness, more self-esteem, even more money, from the effort.

When I opened in my work, I attained the first stage I aimed at. Later, I realised I had to go further, because I had seen more wonderful things I wanted to do and know, so I set a new GOAL. I did something else.

A man flourishes grandly by struggle, by aspiring always to greater heights. Atrophy begins when effort stops. In life, the effortless things soon pall, because they shred away personality, they lessen joy, they decimate achievement. Good though the reward may be, THE GAME IS WORTH MORE THAN THE PRIZE. Games keep one fit. In the biggest game of all- LIFE- a man must be FIT.

Life is like a stairway. When you reach the first landing, you discover another and higher one to aim at, and, reaching that, you find another higher still. We must give ourselves some kind of programme. Life, indeed, should be a grand progression. When a fine man dies, he seems, even in death, to be reaching out beyond the grave, for the healthy joy of new adventure, new struggle, new and more wonderful achievements.

For such a man, Nirvana is a place where a man can DO things with all his heart and soul, as long as day follows night; as long as the seasons follow each other; as long as the years, the centuries, the aeons, stretch forward into eternity.

Acquired Continuity is always superior to inherited Continuity, for inherited Continuity tends to make one too conservative, too inadaptable. Of course, the way to develop the Finishing-What-You-Start Trait is always to ask yourself, before you start anything, whether it is definitely certain, or reasonably probable, that doing it will directly help you  to attain YOUR SUPREME GOAL, to achieve your SUBORDINATE AIM, or to enhance your PERSONAL EQUIPMENT. ANYTHING you WANT to do, you can always DO, for DESIRE is the greatest force on earth.

The WANT is always bound up with a predominant instinct, and a predominant instinct generates its own energy. It is a self starter, a SELF-STARTER that gets your car going untill you reach your goal.

NEVER START A THING WHICH IS NOT IN LINE WITH YOUR LOFTIEST AIMS AND PURPOSES. FINISH EVERYTHING YOU START. MAKE EVERY UNDERTAKING MATERIALIZE.

THIS IS THE LAST OF THE STEPS TO ACHIEVING YOUR DESIRE. THESE STEPS HAVE SHOWN YOU THAT THE BEST SCHOOL A MAN CAN ATTEND IS THE SCHOOL OF SELF-KNOWLEDGE.

Your GREATEST UNDERTAKING IS THE BUILDING OF A PERFECT LIFE. YOU HAVE THE TOOLS- FINISH THE JOB!

Application

Here’s to the man who plans things – Builds things – makes things – Who prates not of wonders of old; Nor gloats upon ancestral gold, But takes of his coat, and takes a hold, And does things.

“DO NOT MERELY GET GOOD THINGS; GET SOME GOOD OUT OF YOUR THINGS.” Many a man has worn himself out getting enough money to build a huge mansion – and seen it from an invalid’s bed – better to build a cottage, and retain the ability to enjoy it.

People tell us “Knowledge is Power.” Don’t you believe it, for it is only half the story. Knowledge is not power, untill it is applied, put into action, made to work. There are people who read and study, and learn day and night; but they halt at the Sixth Step – they never DO anything with their great fund of knowledge. If you buy a packet of rose seed but never plant it, it is useless to you, for you will stroke velvet petals, and inhale the exquisite fragrance, only in dreams.

There are people who buy things because they think they are cheap; then store them up, fearing to use, or having no use for their bargains. No purchased thing is anything but costly if the buyer has no use for it. Use and apply your knowledge every day. Get plenty of good out of the things you have. Capitalise on every trait you have, and it will help you toward YOUR SUPREME GOAL.

I had to learn in the beginning this very thing about APPLICATION. With what agony I learned it! The first year my teacher came to call on my parents, after I had been going to school about six months. “How is Walter getting on?” Teacher answered, ” He has a good mind if only he would apply himself.” I said, “What does she mean?” I found out later that Walter had to learn to APPLY.

Had he done so earlier he would have saved a quarter of a century. It is very costly, very wasteful, to look without seeing, or to listen without hearing. Look and listen, see and hear with THE BRAIN behind the eyes and ears. Some eyes and ears receive a message, but they do not send it on to headquarters – to the “seat of government,” the nerve centre, THE BRAIN.

Capture AND HOLD what you see and hear. Use wisely all the knowledge you have, or hope to have. This leson is not intended just as instruction, but as Training. Do not merely store away knowledge; but make it of positive benefit to you. DO things. Apply the principles. Weave them into the tapestry of your life. ACT. Start NOW.

You must apply everything you learn in every Shakespeare-Binks Leson. You must use the tools given to you, otherwise they are of no use to you, or to anyone else. “Tools” is a wide term, of course. During World War II a Cockney, injured in an air raid, recovered consciousness to hear someone groaning nearby. With bare hands, the Cockney tore at the rubble, and saved a life. Tom was publicly lauded for his heroism. In praising him, the Mayor remarked, “Tom had no tools to work with.” “Wait a bit, Guv.,” said Tom, “wot abart these?” And he held up work-roughened, blood-stained hands.

The things you learn here must be remembered and used. You have paid for them, you have worked for that money, you have given your attention to study. Now I do beseech you to APPLY every single thing I have told you. Do not read the leson once, and then put it away. Use every one of the lessons; do not put them away; keep them constantly before you. Apply all these principles all the time. All successful people apply them, consciously or unconsciously. Needless to say, the more consistent their application, the greater their success.

When we spend money on something which will better us, we are applying something worth while. We have already gained, and have something which will enable us to grow more harvest of the same kind. We are enhancing our equipment in body, mind, efficiency or personality, and in this way making a more favourable impresion on the world. As a result, the world gives us more opportunities, more love, more money, for it judges us by what we demonstrate. “What have you that I want?” says the world, and sums you up accordingly.

We must apply all these things; we must demonstrate. If we are not with the people where we can apply these rules properly, we are going to be just as pleasant looking when alone. It then becomes second nature to us when we are with other people. “Manners, to be well worn, should be worn every day,” said Chesterfield in one of his famous letters.

People always judge us by the part they see. The sum total of what they see is called Personality. Your Personality is the distilled essence of You. It is therefore essential that we appreciate, appropriate, and APPLY such principles as will help to PERFECT OUR PRODUCT OR OUR PERSONALITY, AND BRING US INTO A LIVING REALIZATION OF OUR FONDEST IDEALS.

If there is any heaven upon earth, it is ours when we arrive at, when we earn and LIVE IN, THE LAND OF HEART’S DESIRE. Travel every waking hour to that happy destination; drop anchor in THE HARBOUR OF DREAMS-COME-TRUE.

There were shoals, but you have avoided them; there were cross-currents, but you have navigated them; there were storms, but you have weathered them, because you have followed a well-charted course – you have stayed on the bridge. You have earned your safe arrival, by your SEA-WORTHINESS. You have SHOWN YOUR FLAG. KEEP IT FLYING.

Demonstration

DEMONSTRATION, to be effective, must come from your Inner Self, and be plainly revealed by your Outer Self. We must truly and honestly cultivate the best sides of our nature, applying the principles, planting the good seed in the inner life itself, if we want to SHOW OURSELVES genuine and attractive.

All true development, expansion, and DEMONSTRATION must grow from within, for THE INNER SECRET LIFE OF EVERY MAN IS FELT, even if not understood, by most of those who often see him. Make your PRESENCE impressive by building from the heart and the mind. “The greatest edifice a man can build is HIMSELF, glorified and ennobled by knowledge, properly used.” A man cannot keep himself to himself. Man is a gregarious creature. In this he is most fortunate, for a feeling of fellowship adds to the joys of life.

All people are demonstrating all the time, even when they do not mean to, or think they are not doing so. We all demonstrate just as much by what we do not do, as by what we do. We are going to demonstrate only the finest, the noblest, and we are not going to be too soft, too sentimental or too trashy. Everything about us talks. You may demonstrate by silence, when silence becomes your strongest instrument.

A person thinks, but only his tongue can talk. A dog knows better – he flaps his ears, or wags his tail, instead of barking. If a dog has such co-ordination between mind and body, how much more have we? We are demonstrating all the time.

Then develop your own personality, demonstrate only the finest, the noblest, the truest, the best; only those things which will help to bring your greatest desires into fruition. Fashion yourself, faithfully and fervently. Be the purposeful architect of your personality. The deep, EARNEST DESIRE TO DO, TO BE, OR TO HAVE ANYTHING IS ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE PROOF that the seed is there, deep down in the subconscious soil, and that you already have the ability within you. You can do anything you want to do. YOU CAN! Do you get that?

I am expecting great things from you – I am banking on you. I am betting on you. I believe in you – and in that greater you, you will be in the future. I BELIEVE IN YOU COMPLETELY. I’m right there in in your consciousness, and I won’t go out. Do you get that?

Don’t say you’re not big enough, old enough, young enough. Don’t evade the issue: Face it squarely. In earlier times, men ran away, and covered their faces, whenever they saw the green fire of the Aurora Borealis – the Northern Lights. Only when one man had the courage to look up – AND STAY LOOKING UP – did he realise their beauty.

LOOK UP AND STAY LOOKING UP AT LIFE. It can be glorious, if you will make it so. Life flowers in the fifties, is harvested in the sixties, but the rich rewards of life are in the seventies, the eighties, and the nineties. YOU CAN!

The fact that you have conceived a SUPREME GOAL or a SUBORDINATE AIM is definite of its fulfillment, provided you follow these seven steps.

The most effective and valuable form of DEMONSTRATION is through that which we CREATE or DO. Some people live lives of leasure, quite unproductive and empty; then they seek to hide the poverty of their minds by demonstrating only through their material possessions, their beautiful clothes, houses, cars, jewellery (all made by other people), and their money. When we realise that the PRODUCT is in the measure of the man, these people appear very small. The 64-dollar question is – “What did this man DO?” Mozart wrote immortal music; Christopher Wren built St. Paul’s – even a humble bee makes honeycomb. Don’t sit dreaming, meditating, wishing – DO something – the minutes are ticking away – it’s later than you think.

“Lost, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, ONE golden hour, set with SIXTY diamond minutes. No reward is offered, for who could find a lost HOUR?”

We must demonstrate, also, through our PERSONALITY. Unless our personality is constructive, interesting, inspiring, magnetic, the world will not give us the opportunity to create or to market what we could create and market if our personality were attractive and irresistible. “Oh, I always give to Mrs. Thomas when she comes collecting – she does so much herself for other people.” Mrs. Thomas has made herself irresistible.

The value of demonstrating through our possessions should not be under-estimated or neglected, but this form of demonstration is desirable only in so far as our possessions improve our product, or enhance our personality. What have YOU that can compere in true value to your personality? It is your greatest aset, for, with it, you can obtain all other assets. Look into the heart of life and find it GOOD, BY DEVELOPING AND DEMONSTRATING THE DISTILLED ESSENCE OF ALL THAT IS BEST, TRUEST, FINEST,IN YOU.

The Fifth step to achieving your desire is

Conservation

When you have reached a stage of developement sufficiently advanced to produce the first fruits of the coming harvest, you should study and apply the universal law of CONSERVATION.

Trees, animals and humans require a time of rest between one period of PRODUCTION and another, so does the field when it lies fallow; it is left apparently idle so that it may enrich itself. From such a resting period, new strength is gathered for future effort. But these unproductive periods should not last long. Your most precious vital forces are represented by your time, mental attention, physical energy and monetary capital, not one iota of which should be sqaundered.

People smiled when a Davis Cup tennis player, instead of towelling himself, threw himself down beside the court, and let his whole body sag, relaxing completely. A little later the people who had smiled were applauding the same player. He had rested just long enough to give him that “extra ounce”.

There should be a monetary reserve. This in no way contradicts what we have said in regard to investment. The reserve is not built up by pinching it away from necessities. It is built up out of surplus. If you use your time and talents well, you will have enough AND to spare.

This is equally true so far as our physical equipment is concerned. How foolish a man would be to try to build up a reserve of health by depriving his body of essential food and care! We build up financial reserves out of surplus, and so it is with physical reserves.

Never mistake surplus for essentials. Many people do this, when they buy luxuries they do not need, and when they eat too much. When the body is over-fed, both physical and mental health are impaired.

You are going to do something big in the world? Then give it a chance to grow. Keep more to yourself. START NOW, THIS VERY MOMENT, TO CONSERVE YOUR VITAL FORCES – MENTAL, MUSCULAR, FINANCIAL, and CHRONOLOGICAL, so that you may carry out your great plan. This conservation is part of your dedication to your supreme ideal, your sacred cause.

Do not put yourself in the way of mere social invitations; and, when they do come, remember that so-called social obligations are really personal transgressions, and courteously decline. This is particularly necessary in the last stages of productivity, prior to giving birth to anything worth while.

The bear is an enormous animal, yet he hibernates for six months, so that one or two bears, not more than six inches long, may be born. We, too, must hibernate – have periods of complete relaxation – if we wish to be productive.

Don’t waste your capital. Some people think that the only capital is money. Money is the least important of your capital. AVOID SPENDING UNNECESARY MENTAL OR PHYSICAL ENERGY ON ANYTHING. Most of all, conserve your TIME. A seventeenth century poet has given this wise advice:_

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,

Old Time is still a-flying;

And this same flower that smiles today

Tomorrow will be dying.

In our lives we must make conservation very real. This was partly covered in the first STEP OF ELIMINATION. There is a great deal of difference between ELIMINATING and CONSERVING, PROTECTING, CAPITALISING. ELIMINATION is the ridding, the shedding, the cutting out of something; but CONSERVATION is the conscious, deliberate protection of the essences in our lives – of our TIME, our STRENGHT, and our ENERGY, which are our vital forces. THESE VITAL FORCES are very precious.

The American efficiency expert teaches workmen how to conserve time and energy, worth countless millions a year, merely by showing them how to use the fewest posible steps, at work! Many a person, like the prodigal son, squanders his life in idleness, wrong practices, in running here and there, or doing more things than require to be done, in doing nothing worth the doing.

A woman once said “I am on the go all the time”. It makes me sorrow just to think how “on the go” she always is. She is poor, unhappy, unhealthy; she wears herself out. She has never accomplished anything. She says she has no time for self-improvement, yet she knows all about her neighbours, and knows it in no nice way. She knows all the little unimportant titbits, knows the age of every child in the district, knows all about those children’s clothes, where they were bought, how much was paid for them; When the Smiths bought their new radiogram – a born Public Human Newspaper.

She never gets a single thing for all her so-called knowledge – except the contempt of people who do something worth while!

every once in a while she is asking for help – she needs this, she needs that. In such a life there is no such thing as Conservation. Such an individual may be “on the go” all the time, but she is running around in circles, getting nowhere – very fast!

Our Vital Forces are the forces with wich we must produce, give birth to something in our life, our achievement, health or success. Our ATTENTION, our mental and physical forces, must be conserved for the good and constructive, instead of the destructive and trivial. Be CONSERVATIVE – of YOUR VITAL FORCES. CONSERVE, TO DESERVE!

Co-operation

We are not going to be satisfied with merely conserving ourselves. Conservation is only a means to an end, and the end is CO-OPERATION. Every individual must co-operate with those for whom – and with those with whom he works, even if only for his own sake. We co-operate mainly by our product, and the wise person will ALWAYS do the very best of which he is capable, thus winning the affection, the confidence, and the goodwill of the people who can help him to make the most rapid progress along Life’s Highway towards the SUPREME GOAL.

That individual cannot respect himself who does not do the best piece of work of which he is capable. The greatest that can be said of any man is that he does a good piece of work. Feel at the end of each day that you have striven mightily, that you have put your very best into your work, that you have laid straight and true a few more paving stones along the pathway to your GOAL.

Do a GOOD PIECE OF WORK. Only when we put our best into our work do we enjoy self-esteem, real piece of mind. Be like Longfellow’s “Village Blacksmith”-

Each morning sees some task begun:

Each evening sees its close.

Something attempted, something done

Hath EARNED a night’s repose.

COMPETITION IS THE LAW OF DEATH

In a fight between two lions, or between two tigers, one is often killed. Competition is the Law of Death – CO-OPERATION is the LAW of LIFE. We must avoid the Law of Death. We must obey the Law of CO-OPERATION, yet not give too much, not do so much for others that we do them more harm than good.

To give a person encouragement and inspiration is better than giving him money, for by so doing we help him to call forth the last ounce of his Vital Forces, we assist him to the fulfilment of his deepest desire. It is a much greater thing to co-operate with him, to show him that we believe in him and in his ability to go ahead and DO things, that we are behind him in our thoughts and affections.

In this way, we do him a greater service than if we gave him much money. “Money tends to rust a man – that’s why I like to give away millions” – so said Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish boy who made good in America. Inspiration IS the greatest gift on earth. It has been said that one of the greatest factors in saving England from defeat in the early days of World War II was the inspiring example of Winston Churchill – “We shall fight on the beaches; we shall fight on the hills; we shall fight in the streets and the fields . . .” The famous words are well known. Instead of offering his fellow-men any lesser gift, Churchill offered them the ONLY gift which, at that stage, could have saved their country and their way of life – he offered them INSPIRATION.

Let your co-operation be give and take. As a rule, those who endeavour to practise co-operation are too unselfish. You can’t give properly untill you have. You don’t have untill you are an egoist – a person who considers himself of supreme importance - to himself. Make no mistake, the most important person in your life is YOU.

Let your motive be altruistic – geared to an ideal. The scientist delving in search of truth; the artist lost in the creation of something really beautiful; the mother agonizing and exulting to give life to her child; these know why they toil and the knowing – the dedication to an ideal – gilds and enriches their labors.

Let your METHOD be selfish. The ideal business man is curt to the point of rudeness, and he has no use for friends or relatives in the office. The office is a place for WORK. Next to habits, friends are the most expensive things. They are the main channels through which your forces of time, energy and money run to waste. Friendship is a luxury; but business – work – is a necessity. Be loyal to your business (we use this term in the broad sense, of course). “The disloyal robs himself of his own sustenance,” says an old proverb and it is true, whether you are disloyal to husband, wife; emplyer or employee. Disloyalty is a poisonous boomerang whose target eventually is the one who throws it.

No one realises how rapidly the news of loyalty or disloyalty travels back to the person of whom he was talking. “Thy friend hath a friend, and that friend’s friend hath a friend,” etc. The laws of loyalty work both ways. The man who directs others should be loyal to his employees, for an employer who is not loyal to his employees does them and himself a great injustice. Elbert Hubbard, in suggesting the constructive attitude for the employer, said: “If you suspect a man, don’t hire him; if you hire him, don’t suspect him.”

Far more valuable than the giving of money is the art of showing your fellow-man by a proper attitude how he can help himself. In his heart of hearts EVERY man longs to stand on his own feet, to be really independent. Inspiration is the rarest gift that one soul can impart to another. The very derivation of the word “inspiration” reveals its power – literally; the word means “a breaking in”. The person who inspires actually breathes into another some of his own life force, some of the fire of his own heart, fanning to new heat the flickering flame of the other’s spirit.

CO-OPERATE ALWAYS BY MAINTAINING THE RIGHT MENTAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS OTHERS. LET IT BE MANIFEST IN YOUR WORDS, VOICE, POSTURE GESTURE, HANDSHAKE, FACIAL EXPRESSION, AND YOUR ENTIRE PERSONALITY. In this way, you will call forth THE BEST in everyone you meet. This is CO-OPERATION in excelsis, for it helps YOU as well as those with whom you come in contact. Christ’s philosophy – the Brotherhood of Man – was simply CO-OPERATION on a universal scale. UNO – United Nations’ Organisation – is a gigantic experiment in CO-OPERATION – it may save the world from future wars. CO-OPERATION IS MIGHTIER THAN THE ATOM BOMB, FOR, INSTEAD OF DESTROYING, IT BUILDS, REDEEMS, REVIVIFIES.

The whole world needs to be told, again and again, about the law of INVESTMENT, as applied to the greatest, most productive CAPITAL on earth – our ENERGY, ATTENTION, TIME and MONEY. One of the ARTS of Life is that of spending, or rather investing, money wisely. Don’t be penurious. Most people hold pennies so close to their eyes that they cannot see the pounds when they come floating round. Such people violate, unknowingly, the LAW of INVESTMENT. The Road to Destiny is a Toll Road – all along the way, there are gates that open ONLY to those who can pay for the privilege of progressing.

This law is irrevocable, and immutable. Realise this – the man who does not pay as he progresses does not progress far. The highest payment exacted for progress is not payment in cash – it is payment on the personal plane – payment in the form of dedication to an ideal, of unflagging effort, of purposeful work, of burning desire to GET THERE.

There are many reasons why some people do not progress far; one being that they stop at the Inner Half of the Fourth Step. If one is willing to do all the other things, but is not willing to invest the money necessary to his progress, essential to the full use of his natural ability, he will not go on – partly, because he fails to procure the thing he ought to buy, and, partly, because of the dislike and contempt aroused in other people towards those who will not spend what they ought – NEED – to spend. Never baulk at a money payment – refusing to pay costs you many times as much, later, in reduced earnings.

Of all human traits, that which is the most universally disliked is stinginess. NEVER HESITATE TO INVEST BOTH TIME AND MONEY IN THOSE THINGS THAT GIVE YOU A BETTER AND MORE ADEQUATE EQUIPMENT FOR REACHING YOUR SUPREME GOAL. Every part of your life should be geared to this grand objective, this dream which holds the heart of YOUR happiness – the happiness of YOUR heart.

The best form of economy is to increase your income. The best way of increasing your income is to increase your own productive powers. The best way to increase your own productive power is to invest in self-improvement. No matter which way we look at life, we come back to the all-important human element. No wise merchant banks all his money; if he does, his business dwindles instead of growing. Just as the wise trader invests a goodly proportion of his stock in his business, so one should realise that such is his own real stock, and make frequent and wise investments in health, mentality and personality.

Invest part of your money, attention and capital in these most vital kinds of stock. In particular, keep yourself in touch with the latest authentic scientific discoveries relating to human analysis, preservation of health, and the prolongation of life. Avoid pseudo systems, patent medicines, and all doctors except the very best. Don’t be penurious. Spend – USE – your money without undue regard for pence. Buy only the highest quality goods or services – inferior ones are far too costly in the long run.

IT IS BETTER TO LIVE RICH AND DIE POOR THAN TO LIVE POOR AND DIE RICH. John D. Rockefeller died a multi-millionaire; but he neglected his health so much that, in later life, not all his carefully hoarded millions could enable him to enjoy one meal. If he had lived more richly in the matter of good health, his investment in himself would have yielded better dividends.

One reason why I love sharing this with you is that you like to learn, hopefully you are not a squanderer or a skinflint, because as a squanderer all waste is wrong, and as a skinflint, stinginess is a short-sighted policy. The value of these lessons, to you, cannot be estimated in terms of money – they offer you a clear blueprint for successful living. Is there any other dividend so valuable?

Use what money you have in improving yourself, so that you may earn more. To earn more, yearn more – then learn more. The deciding issue as to whether you should part with money, whether much or little, should always be to ask yourself whether there is absolute certainty, or at least a reasonable probability, that the purchase will directly help you to reach your GREATER or LESSER GOAL, or make more adequate your PERSONAL EQUIPMENT.

The world judges us by what it sees. The sum total of what it sees is called personality. Our personality is our show window, our display counter and our advertisement of ourselves, all in one. This personality of ours must be attractive, so that we not only win Success, but ATTRACT it. Bank on the things which never die – knowledge, skill, character. Invest on the highest plane, and the return will be rich indeed – rich INDEED. The most valuable assets a man has are those which remain when he stands before you  dressed in rags. He would still have his character, his skill, his knowledge, his personality – the basis of all SUCCESS.

Aim at reaching YOUR SUPREME GOAL by investing your money in making yourself a more useful, more efficient and more productive citizen.

Compensation

As INVESTMENT, shows that we must pay for what we get, COMPENSATION shows that the Law works both ways, and that we are going to be paid for what we do. every effect must be equalled by a cause, and every cause must be matched by an effect. In the financial world,compound interest is a commercial effect crowning a financial cause. Your interest is proportionate to our investment. Reaping bears a scientific relation to sowing. No root, no fruit; no bud, no bloom; no seed, no sheaf; no fibre, no flame; poor investment, poor compensation. This is the inescapable LAW, and you should know and respect it NOW.

The student who has RESOLVED to invest richly can rest content in the knowledge that he wil reap richly. This is as certain as tomorrow’s bright sunrise.

What are you going to do with the good things of life when you get them? Every time that you get something that you want – CELEBRATE! Register your satisfaction by giving something away to someone less fortunate.

The only justifiable reason for getting things is the desire to bestow the laurels at the feet of someone you love. Show your wisdom and quality in this way, and life’s joys will come flooding round your heart. When Sir Isaac Isaacs became Australia’s first Australian Governor-General, he declared, “Whatever honor has come to me, there has been one chief cause – my wonderful mother. I lay this honor at her feet.” This act of “Laying at the feet” greatly becomes a man, ennobling his spirit and warming his heart. As for the one at whose feet the honor is laid,could there be greater exhiliration? It is as though the person says, “I owe this to you. Here is my tribute.”

Many people attend all the free lectures; but, when it comes to taking up serious study, they make all kinds of excuses for not doing so; but the real reason is plain – such people do not wish to part with their money. They do not see that the parting with this money will bring back more money. We do not give away free lessons, because we know that the people receiving them would not profit by them – we know that they would never carry out the instructions as they would do if they had paid money receive the lessons. WE APPRECIATE, APPROPRIATE, AND PROFIT BY A THING IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SACRIFICE WE HAVE MADE TO GET IT.

The type of person alluded to does not believe there is any sacrifice except money sacrifice, so that,  if we gave something to him, and it cost him nothing, he would value it as nothing. Where there is NO INVESTMENT, there is no COMPENSATION. The mother of James Garfield went without sufficient food to buy the boy the books he craved, yet she lived to see her son President of the United States! Don’t invest sadly, grudgingly. Invest gladly, sure that the compensation will come running in like the tide.

The student who has to make a sacrifice for his education makes the most of his talents; puts to the best advantage all his time and energy, makes the greatest success of life. When the celebrated Joe Louis, the boxer, was asked what made a world-grade fighter, he replied, “Hard times, brother, HARD TIMES.” If we did not spend money on the things we did not want at all, really, we would have plenty of money for the things which would richly compensate us. See that people get from you what they pay for, and they will gladly pay you for what they get. GIVE – and in the giving, you GET.

We should make our MONEY a SERVANT that works for us. We should not be SLAVES, working for money as a master, grinding our lives away. We should not allow money to run away – to be dissipated – as the squanderer does; we should not be too lax, too “easy” with it and give it all out at one time. We should keep some of it by us, and make it work for us.

MONEY is a wonderful servant, when kept in its place, but a hard master, if we let it rule us. Both the miser who, like Silas Marner, sits counting his coins every night, and the squanderer, who lets money run away, acknowledge money as their master – there is no chance of success in the lives of such fools. The empty ring of coins has sounded the deathknell of happiness for many a man, because he has lost the girl he loved, his hope of children, his friends – all because he thought too much of money. Of the two, the Miser is worse off. The squanderer does get SOMETHING for his money, but the Miser gets NOTHING at all for his.

Do not give away what you are trying to sell – this is a confession of failure.  In regard to a loan, if you know the person to whom you are making it  is not going to repay it, make it clear that it is a gift. Do not let him feel you are holding a club over his head. Let yourself have the credit from the beginning of making the gift.

The best kind of  saving is not pinching a penny here and there from necessities, but by self-developement and proper self-expression, by being able to earn so much that you will have a surplus from which to save, after your necessities have been fully supplied.

The Law of Compensation, or the Law of Remote Returns as it is sometimes called, always works. Base your whole life upon it, with confidence. It will not fail you. The person to whom you have made a gift will himself quite likely never pay it back, but you will not lose by your action. Somebody else will make it up to you.
