We are a 3M 2008 “Dealer of the Year”, capable of servicing 1 or 1,000 locations for our clients, deploying experienced ’swat teams’ of professional installers when called upon.

Business Cases for Security Window Film

Did you hear the one about the employee who was ‘down sized’ and broke through the glass wall and into the server room with a baseball bat? Security window film would have prevented this costly disruption in business.

How about the retailer whose large storefront glass on Newbury Street was smashed and criminals ran off with $15,000 worth of hand bags in less than 30 seconds? Security window film would have caused the perpetrators to run away empty handed.

3M security films are installed on the interior surface of existing glass walls, panels, viewing cases, sidelights and windows. The multi-layer construction in the 3M ULTRA series creates a tough, rip-stop capability that holds shattered glass in place much like a broken windshield on a car. The film, also known as ‘fragment retention film’, or simply ‘FRF’, utilizes patented 3M adhesives that work to keep the broken glass in place, creating a “24-7″ invisible barrier not easily breached by vandals.

Multiple Benefits

Warranted by 3M company, the thin films also block out 99% of the sun’s UV rays, helping to reduce premature fading, adding to the value proposition for property managers and building owners. ‘Tinted’ security films designed to reduce heat and sun glare for clients who need solar control and security are also available. These films are also used for seismic and windstorm protection, holding shattered glass in place and mitigating damage to people and real property. Some insurance carriers will offer rebates to clients to help offset the cost of security film installation.

Other Applications

Don’t let this happen to your business.

Merchants who own jewelry stores have their glass viewing cases protected with this thin film technology in order to guard valuable inventory from “smash and grab”. Building owners, disgusted with graffiti artists and tired of the expense of replacing window glass, trust 3M security films as an added layer of clear security on the exterior of the glass, acting as a surface protectant. General contractors that need glass removal during renovation often have 3M security film applied to the glass prior to removal in order to protect workers during demolition.

These thin eco-friendly films from 3M have an adhesive backing that is semi-permanent, allowing for ease of removal and redesign when interiors need a refresher. Frosted or etched looking ‘light management’ films block out 99% of the sun’s UV radiation while maintaining the natural daylight needed to illuminate interior spaces.

Unlike expensive sandblasting or etching that weakens glass, 3M frosted and privacy window film solutions bond with the glass surface to strengthen window panes. Applied 3M films are durable and can be cleaned with normal glass cleaners, including Windex. Unlike etched, frosted or sandblasted glass that traps fingerprint oils and is hard to keep looking new, clean and fresh, installed decorative films from 3M look fantastic over the long term. Properly installed, these films never peel or loose their color and are warranted by 3M.

The 3M RE70 solar film substrate not only cured the “light pollution” issue, but blocks 99% of the UV radiation and substantial heat gain streaming through over 5,000 square feet of glass at the W entrance.

3M Window Film Atlanta, New York, Boston Los Angeles Window Film

Recently, 3M announced the creation of a new division - “3M RE” or “3M Renewable Energy” - to focus on energy management and sustainable energy opportunities worldwide. By leveraging its core technologies in this quickly developing global business, 3M promises to be a smart bet for customers and partners looking for trusted 3M solutions to today’s most pressing climate and energy management concerns.

3M Takes Charge

Window Film Depot, Inc. President Jeff Franson recently met with Mike Roman, Executive VP of 3M Renewable Energy in Las Vegas at the annual 3M Dealer Conference about this important new 3M business.

”My takeaway was simple - WOW. We’ve known that there’s been a perfect storm brewing. To learn directly from Mike how well 3M is positioned to be a leader in both aspects - component products like tapes, adhesives and reflective films - as well as in delivering installed solutions with it’s line of energy management window films - was quite encouraging from a leading dealers perspective. ”

”Mike was so pumped on the opportunity and articulated an aggressive implementation strategy. I walked away from our conversation with a new respect for the entrepreneurial capabilities of 3M. Most often, big firms like 3M tend to manuever like aircraft carriers - they don’t turn easily. Mike’s team is designed to adapt quickly to an explosive and dynamic new market for sustainability solutions. Window Film Depot is very pleased with its role as 3M’s leading installer of solar window films and looks forward to working with Mike’s extended team implementing the vision.”

The 3M Renewable Energy Division will be divided between ‘conservation products’ like solar control window films and ‘new energy solutions’. 3M has developed critical components that enable wind and solar power generation.

Conservation Products

3M invented the first window films over 30 years ago and continues to be the leader in new technologies designed to control light and manage energy loads for homes and buildings. Newly developed nano-technologies have helped create next generation thin - film solutions from 3M that are applied to existing windows to reduce heat gain, sun glare and UV radiation.

Building owners, facility engineers, and property managers find 3M’s energy film solutions both aesthetically pleasing and financially compelling. In the drive to better manage energy usage and reduce operating costs of buildings, 3M window films have a quick payback, lowers a buildings carbon footprint, and can be eligible for utility and tax rebates and credits.

Renewable Energy

3M’s reflective films will be used to maximize the energy harnessing capabilities of solar panels. 3M’s light weight and durable tapes and adhesives will be used to help build stronger, lighter and more cost effective roof mounted systems.

Interestingly, 3M’s also in the windmill business. There’s over 1,000 pounds of 3M tapes and adhesives that help make up a single blade in a wind turbine.

WINDOW FILM: Property managers and building owners who turn to their facility managers and energy engineers for practical solutions to help lower energy usage - often a buildings’ highest operating cost - are increasingly choosing energy control window film as the preferred retro-fit energy control solution.

Window film’s multiple value proposition, proven track record of performance and ease of implementation through Window Film Depot national installation services makes the job easier for decision makers in search of measurable cost reduction solutions.

3M energy control window films work by selectively blocking solar energy that normally transmits through the building envelope through window glass. Applied to the interior surface of existing windows, these patented nano-film technologies have 15-25 year life-cycles and are warranted by 3M, the world leader in thin film coatings.

These energy films are retro-fit solutions that save money, lower stress on HVAC systems, help to control annoying sun glare, or “light pollution”, and reduce UV exposure by 99.9%. Some window film applications will qualify for LEED credits and are promoted by BOMA and the Clinton Climate Initiative as effective low cost, high impact sustainability solutions.

Green Window Film Economics

‘Going green’ is important, but expensive and often little more than a ‘feel good’ measure for management and marketers. Not so with 3M window film. Window film industry case studies conclude that solar window films will help reduce heat gain in a building by 3-5 degrees, have ROI paybacks of 2-4 years, and can create total savings equal to ten times the initial investment.

Utility rebates and Federal tax credits (available through the EPA act of 2005) often decrease the ROI time-frame making window film one of the most cost effective ways to improve building performance. Window Film Depot will work with its clients, ESCO partners and project managers to help research and submit for credits and window film related rebates.

Real Savings Beyond Kilowatts

The sun’s heating up of furnishings, carpets, walls and people creates multiple problems for occupants, owners and property managers. What are the true costs associated with heat gain on the west wall of your property? The number one reason tenants fail to renew or extend their lease is due to HVAC issues.

It’s a proven fact that people do not perform well and productivity declines in work spaces where temperature imbalances exist and discomfort reigns. Having energy control window film installed on a ‘problem exposure’ (usually western or south facing window walls) may lead to important savings that aren’t easily quantifiable - tenant retention - by helping to reduce temperature imbalances and tenant discomfort.

3M energy control window films are available in a tough, shatter resistant security version that protects occupants and property from windstorm, smash and grab, bomb blast and seismic activity. These same films will help prolong the lifecycle of fabrics, wood floors, artwork, furniture, carpets and other valuables reducing the costs associated with turnover and interior - fit ups.

Commercial Window Film Solutions - Atlanta

So, Mr Building Engineer, you’ve installed the timers on the lights, replaced the air filters, upgraded the HVAC system and changed out the light-bulbs….What now - your energy costs are still out of control? How about a money saving ‘face-lift’ from Window Film Depot with high performance solar window films?

Conservation of energy is the ‘other side of the coin’ in today’s debate around energy independence. For all the talk about solar, hydro, bio, and other ‘clean-tech’ solutions in the pipeline, one thing needs to be remembered. If we don’t conserve, we won’t win the battle, or the war. Solar control window film is a proven solution for engineers, facility managers and building owners who work hard to drive building operating costs down through lower energy usage.

Building owners know that managing energy costs downward is critical to a profitable operation - and press thier engineers for solutions that imapct the bottom line. Mr Building Owner, do us both a favor, on the next hot and sunny day, stand in front of one of your west facing windows and count to 20. Then, as you wipe the sweat from your brow, consider the benefits of solar control window films for a minute….and call the head engineer in for a meeting.

First, look at the performance. Solar films will block up to 75% of the heat gain streaming through windows. Low-E, (low emissivity), films provide dual purpose solutions by not only rejecting heat coming in, but also keep warm air in, acting as an insulator.

Second, solar film is easy to have installed. Solar films are installed on existing glass as a retro-fit in the matter of days, if not weeks for larger projects. Crews work off hours and on weekends to ensure a smooth and non-disruptive project.

Third, window film is a great investment that addresses multiple issues. Installed properly, solar window film will last form 20-30 years before needing replacement. For most buildings, the payback in energy savings alone is between 2 and 4 years. Ancillary benefits like improved tenant comfort, UV protection, glare control, added privacy and security make window film a ‘green solution’ with multiple value propositions.

Make sense? The next steps are easy. Window Film Depot provides national sales and installation services of solar, security and designer window films.
