Nokia N9 spotted

2011-05-12T04:23:00.000-07:00

The long-awaited Nokia N9 has passed FCC checking and that gives us a glimpse at a schematic of the device and also info on the wireless connectivity of the device. The last we’ve heard of Nokia’s MeeGo efforts, they said that there will be a device called N950, which will be out by the end of this year. Not a word since, we’re not even sure if the N9 and the N950 are the same device.

The Nokia N9 was tested for 850/1900 GSM/GPRS/EDGE bands with a note that outside the US the device can also use the 900/1800 bands. The 3G bands tested were 850/1700/1900/2100, again with a note that the 900MHz band is also available outside the US. Basically, the N9 can work on pretty much any GSM network around the world.

Wi-Fi b/g/n (2.4GHz band) and Bluetooth were also tested. From the accessory information we also learn that the Nokia N9 will use a BL-4D battery (1200mAh Li-ion) and it will come with a WH-701 one-piece wired headset.

That’s all well and good (though the battery seems underpowered) but what the FCC filing doesn’t answer is when the Nokia N9, or N950, or whatever Nokia names its MeeGo device will hit the shelves - people’s patience isn't endless.

Apple answers location recording fears, promises a software fix

2011-04-28T10:08:00.000-07:00

In the last few days Apple took lots of negative feedback concerning the location tracking affair. Today Apple released a Q&A statement, which admits to the tracking and calls it a 'bug'. An update to fix it is on the way though.

Apple is indeed collecting location information from all iPhone users via GSM base stations and Wi-Fi hotspots. Since Apple uses this information to assist and speed up the regular GPS location services for all users, it constantly polls that info from users and hence the reason the iPhones records this sort of information wherever you go.

Apple also admits the location recording continues to work even if you turn off Location Services and that the iPhone will have stored your location history ever since you bought your phone. According to the Q&A, both things are newly discovered bugs and will be 'fixed' with the next software update. It will disable backing up the location database to your computer, and your iPhone will log your location for only about a week back in time. You will be able to turn the feature off altogether by disabling Location Services.

Besides this location data, Apple also collects anonymous traffic data to provide “iPhone users an improved traffic service in the next couple of years”.

The BlackBerry Bold Touch 9330

2011-04-11T03:02:00.000-07:00

Previously known as Dakota or Montana, the BlackBerry Bold Touch 9330 is just one of RIM’s new lineup of phones scheduled to be released this year. And now the touch bar gets some hands-on love and the initial impressions are not what you’d call negative.

The 2.8-inch touchscreen is responsive and reportedly compliments nicely the well-proven BlackBerry keyboard. Unfortunately, there’s no word on what performance the 1.2GHz Qualcomm CPU pumps out on the new BlackBerry OS 6.1, but we are ready to bet it’s not a turtle.

The BlackBerry Bold Touch is headed for a June-July release, with prices and availability likely to be announced at the BlackBerry World event on 1 May 2011.

Sony to manufacture iPhone 5 camera, 8MP all but certain

2011-04-03T10:54:00.001-07:00

There has been a lot of speculation about the iPhone 5 but the camera department has rarely been mentioned. Well now we know its manufacturer and resolution.

Previously there was just those vague rumors that Apple is considering changing their current OmniVision-produced camera with a Sony one.

Well now we have a confirmation that the Cupertino-based company has gone ahead with the move from no other, but the Sony CEO. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal Sir Howard Stringer let slip that his company is supplying camera modules to Apple. And since none of the existing Apple products use Sony modules it's only logical to assume that those units are set for the iPhone 5 production.

Which leads us to the conclusion that the Apple iPhone 5 will pack one of those sweet 8 megapixel Exmor R backlit sensors. The other Sony module that's meant for cameraphone usage is 16.4MP unit, but it seems unlikely that Apple will use it as it it significantly larger and that would make the iPhone 5 way thicker than its predecessor.

Sony creates those image sensor technology in the Sendai factory in Japan, which is one of the affected factories by the earthquakes and tsunamis, which hit Japan this year. It's yet unclear if that will affect the iPhone 5 availability, though.

So, larger screen, an 8 megapixel camera and, possibly, NFC for the next iPhone then. It's starting to look as a pretty decent upgrade, right?

Apple iPad 2

2011-03-31T09:05:00.000-07:00

The Apple iPad 2 is about to hit European shelves, fresh form a diet and exercise regime that’s helped it shed weight and build muscle. Faster, thinner and lighter is an accurate account of what’s been going on in the year that divides the two editions of Apple’s tablet.

Apple is taking it easy with the upgrades as usual – everything is carefully planned to ensure smooth traffic of new and repeat customers. It’s weirdly inconsistent with the hype about every new release. Anyway, faster-thinner-lighter is a fair deal to offer new users without making the original iPad adopters feel duped.

iPhone5 release

2011-03-14T04:40:00.000-07:00

There is always a great hype and expectation for Apple products in the market. Recently an image of an iPhone bezel came around the internet which claims to be an iphone5 prototype. With most of the smart phone companies opting for larger screen, Apple may also join the same bandwagon. It will be a great experience to have the retina display on the larger screen.

Apple may also release the iPhone5 with increased memory space of 64GB.

Apple plans to introduce Sony’s 8-megapixel sensors in the camera of the iPhone5.

It also plans to incorporate the A5 dual core processor which had its debut in ipad2 into iPhone5. It will be a great competition to Android, which is employing the Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processors.

This A5 processor will give the iPhone5 a great performance bumps when used along with its retina display.

Apple may also incorporate the mirror display via HDMI which is being introduced in iPad2 to iPhone5.

It is very much expected that the iPhone5 will released with iOS5 which plans to improve the interface and multi-touch gestures for controlling menus and multitasking.

Voice control messaging is major introduction expected in iPhone5.

iPhone5 may come in two color variants; Black and white. Also it is planning to replace the glass back with aluminum back.

Facetime over 3G networks will be a great show.

iPhone Nano is rumored to be introduced to make iPhone available to the masses.

NFC technology may find its place in the new iPhone5 which enables users to pay bills from their iPhone.

iPhone5 is expected to be released by the end of 2011.

Apple iPad 2

2011-03-08T08:17:00.000-08:00

Ladies and gents, one of the most anticipated devices of the year, the iPad 2, was finally unveiled by Apple's very own Steve Jobs who appeared on stage winning thunderous applause. We're glad to see one of the most influential CEOs in good health, but we're also happy to see Apple bring out the next iPad 2 with a mighty dual-core A5 chipset clocked at 1GHz and with a 33% thinner body. The second-gen iPad's body measures at the razing sharp 0.34 inches (8.8mm) of depth, significantly less than the original iPad's 13.4mm. Yes, folks, it's even thinner than the iPhone 4 and it will weigh 1.3 pounds now. We know what you are all wondering now - the release date! No need to worry - March 11th is the official release date for the U.S. market, while another 26 countries will get it on March 25th. But before we jump into more details, don't forget that you can check out our brief comparison of the specs of Apple's original iPad and the new iPad 2.

Photo of iPhone 5

2011-03-03T08:12:00.000-08:00

Assuming the width of the phone hasn't changed (judging by Steve Jobs' past statements this seems the more likely option) we can try to guesstimate the display size. After some measurements and some math we ended up with just under 3.9" for the iPhone 5 screen diagonal, with should allow a margin of error because of the angle at which the photo of the digitizer was taken.

This seems pretty close to the rumor of a 4-inch screen for the fifth-gen iPhone. Or if we follow the iPhone mini rumor, then a 3.5" screen can fit into a pretty small phone. There are mockups of both versions floating around the net - you shouldn't put too much stock into them, but they should give you a general idea of what to expect.

Concept BlackBerry for the Future

2011-02-06T08:05:00.000-08:00

We have seen BlackBerry concept designs before. BlackBerry design which we know is quite typical. Wide-screen, trackpad or trackball navigation features, and the average comes with a QWERTY keypad.

The concept of a BlackBerry Empathy that carried Kiki Tang and Daniel Yoon from Art Center College of Design are much different from the concept design of the BlackBerry is currently available.

At first glance Empathy BlackBerry phone comes with a physical interface resembles a crystal and a unique form of biometric ring that serves to collect emotional data. It works when you touch with your friends via instant messaging (IM) and social networking services like Facebook, Twitter, and the like.

How to Jailbreak Your Apple iPhone

2011-02-05T04:22:00.000-08:00

Are you one of those who have heard a lot about jailbreaking the Apple iPhone and all the advantages of jailbreaking but still have not tried it yourself? Well, here are some simple steps which will smoothly sail you through this process.

1. Well, first of all what you need to do is simply download the Quick Pwn Jailbreaker Tool which usually comes zipped and you need to unzip it. After you unzip it, just get the file and save it in file like C:\quickpwn.

2. Afterwards simply download the firmware image that you want to demote to and save it in the file C:\quickpwn.

3. Then just open the iTunes and see if it is recognizing your Apple iPhone or not. However, afterwards make sure to click on Apple iPhone 2g.bat, if you are using first generation iPhone. While, in case of second generation Apple iPhone , you should click on Apple iPhone 3g.bat and click on iPod touch.bat, if you are someone using the iPod touch.

4. Then another important thing is that, while you do this you might get a command to remove any or all of the iTunes but you don’t need to follow the command and just ignore it if you want to keep the process working.

5. Afterwards you will be required to turn off your Apple iPhone but that does not mean you need to disconnect it from the computer. Then to get your Apple iPhone into DFU mode you need to hold the power and home button for around 10 seconds. Then keep on holding home but release the power and wait until you hear the beep of your computer. The program will take over once it recognizes that your Apple iPhone is in DFU mode.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc

BlackBerry Bold 9780

2011-02-04T06:19:00.000-08:00

It’s no surprise that the BlackBerry Bold 9780 is the next logical evolutionary step, rather than a complete makeover that will propel it into the same league as the iPhone and Android. RIM has a loyal core of customers whose bond with the brand goes beyond the obvious business benefits. And devices like the Bold 9780 are certainly part of that bond.

From a geek’s perspective, a new generation of gadgets should emerge to a new generation of users. Radical, rebellious, with no sense of history and no respect for authorities. In the world of business, every new generation of gadgets has to make generations of users feel at home.

Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570

2011-02-04T06:05:00.000-08:00

Mini phones are a hot commodity. They are desirable and fill a market gap of small, easy-to-carry devices, which can lift mountains despite their size. Now Samsung wants to have a go at that market with the Galaxy Mini S5570.

The Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570 is expected to be pretty affordable for what it has to offer and that’s always a good thing. Powering the device is an ARMv6 600Mhz, which doesn’t sound like much, but with Froyo 2.2 on top, it’s sufficient for everyday usage.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc

2011-01-24T00:28:00.000-08:00

Sony Ericsson is back at it and they are pushing pedal to the metal with their latest unusually curved and unusually streamlined sports car – the XPERIA Arc. Once one of the top three phone manufacturers, Sony Ericsson has been through some hard times but the company underwent a painful restructuring and it found a way to make its handsets desirable again by focusing on the high-end segment and staking on Android OS. The XPERIA X10 did a lot to repair the company public image and it’s now up to the Arc to improve it even further.

In theory it should be easier now – we already know Sony Ericsson is capable of producing top-notch hardware. Even if they aren’t doing spectacularly in terms of pushing updates, their recent smartphones have all been good value for money so the Arc won’t have its origin held against it.
