The Xbox 360 has started 2012 just like it finished up 2011 – in front of the pack across the U.S. Console Market.

According to the Official Microsoft Blog January 2012 looked like this:

Xbox 360 sold more than 270,000 units in January, maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. This marks the thirteenth straight month Xbox 360 was the top-selling console in the U.S.

Holding a 49 percent share of current-generation console sales, total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in January (hardware, software and accessories) reached $301 million, the most for any console in the U.S. This marks the eleventh consecutive month Xbox 360 has held more than 40 percent of the current-generation console market share.

During the month of January, Xbox 360 held five of the top 10 U.S. console game titles, including: “Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3,” “Battlefield 3,” “NBA 2K12” and “Just Dance 3.”

One other little tidbit that was announced last week – the Xbox 360 was the number one selling console worldwide last year. Much of that is attributed to the Kinect for Xbox 360 device, a new dashboard update and lots more entertainment options on the console.

You know there used to be a time the Xbox was a black hole for losing cash – not so much anymore – now it is a black hole for raking the cash in!

Technology. It’s the air we breath, the water we drink, and the thing that drives us to do just about everything it is we do. So is the news on technology. We always want it, and when we don’t get it scary things happen – I start to speak in old English and watch PBS for example. This week we’ve got my picks for the best tech news applications the Windows Phone Marketplace has to offer.

When you need access to the latest tech news there is the big guys and than everyone else. Weblogs Inc’s Engadget is the former. Complete with access to their wealth of content users of Engadget for Windows Phone can stream episodes of “The Engadget Show”, as well as the Engadget Podcast, reviews, and photo galleries. Best of all it’s free, with no advertisements.

New comer The Verge also belongs in the pinnacle of tech new sites unfortunately there isn’t an app for Windows Phone available. At least officially. Unofficially former WinRumors blogger Tom Warren has now repurposed WinRumors on Windows Phone to repost all his Microsoft geared stories from The Verge. The result is an app that’s only WinRumor in name, and The Verge in content. It’s free as well.

So you want the best in Windows Phone news as it happens eh? WPCentral sets a new gold standard. Featuring Live Tiles that offer the latest headlines, toast notifications, the ability to comment on news stories, search, and podcast streaming it is by far one of the most feature complete apps for a news organization that we’ve seen on the platform. It’s $0.99 but also has a free trial for those of you who prefer advertisements.

I don’t mind being completely honest. I’m totally biased when it comes to LiveSide’s app. Why? I love the content the site dishes out. It’s solid Microsoft reporting and wrap-up articles make for a nice break from the sea of “let’s repost this!” sites the other guys are doing. Their app is as minimalist as it gets. You can browse the latest articles in each topic by pivoting right or left. There’s also a search option as well but the bottom line is as long as it loads quickly, doesn’t crash daily, and serves up decent stories I’ll continue to keep it on my device. LiveSide is also free with ads.

We end this week’s Windows Phone App Flow with another app I’m completed biased on; Windows Observer for Windows Phone! It makes it’s debut tonight, and I can tell you that a lot of hard work and time went into making this a great app for those who want to follow Microsoft news on the go. Podcast streaming? Got that. Content sharing? You bet! It even has five custom secondary Live Tiles for the news you care about most. WindowsObserver is free with ads. Download it folks. You’ll love it.

That does it for another edition of Windows Phone App Flow. Do you have a suggestion for new apps we should feature? Send them my way on Twitter, username @harlemS. Until next time this is Travis wishing you tech, peace, and soul!

A massive post has gone live over at the Building Windows 8 Blog, Building Windows for the ARM processor architecture, and it spells out a huge amount of details concerning Windows 8 and its development and use on ARM based devices.

This post is also very unique in that it is apparently written entirely by Steven Sinofsky the President of the Windows Division at Microsoft. Usually a Windows team member writes the post and Steven provides a brief introduction.

It is not an understatement to say that the tech community has been waiting for this post for quite a while. The question of Windows on ARM, WOA for short according to the story, has been the subject of Internet discussions ever since it was announced last year.

So if you are technically minded and want to understand those technical foundations of WOA then head over to the post and read away – it may take a while to digest all of that data.

Here I am going to highlight some key snippets of the post that brings to the forefront where Microsoft is headed with WOA from a users perspective.

Windows on ARM, or WOA, is a new member of the Windows family building on the foundation of Windows. The goal is that using WOA “out of the box” will feel just like using x86/64 Windows 8. You will sign on the same way. You will start and launch apps the same way. You will use the new Windows Store the same way. You will have access to the intrinsic capabilities of Windows, from the new Start screen and Metro style apps, to peripherals.

WOA represents a deep technical partnership across ARM licensees, peripheral manufacturers, PC manufacturers, and Microsoft. With WOA you can look forward to integrated, end-to-end products – hardware, firmware and WOA software all built from the ground up.

All Metro style apps in the Windows Store work on both WOA and x86/64 Windows 8. WOA provides Metro style apps from PC to cloud with apps from Microsoft that support mail, calendaring, contacts, photos, and storage. WOA provides industry leading support for hardware accelerated HTML5 with Internet Explorer 10.

WOA supports the Windows desktop experience. This includes explorer, Internet Explorer 10 for the desktop and most other Windows desktop features which have been significantly architected for touch and minimized power/resource consumption.

WOA includes desktop versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

WOA PCs are still under development and our collective goal is to see them around the same time as PCs designed for x86/64 and Windows 8.

Microsoft and ARM partners will be making available a limited number of test devices to developers in a closed, invitation only program. These are not samples or hints of forthcoming devices, but tools for hardware and software engineers.

Certainly is a shift from the normal thought process when it comes to Windows but it is going to be amazing to see some of these systems on a chip devices with WOA running on them. It really does open up a lot of possibilities relating to portability, battery life and functionality.

It all started innocently enough. I received a message in my YouTube account inbox from someone on YouTube who referenced a video that I had uploaded of geese walking down the road in front of our house.

The individual told me that they represented a company in the UK that had just landed a contract to with the Discovery Channel to produce a series about animals breakouts and that they wanted to use this clip as part of the show. They were willing to pay $50 for a non-exclusive use of the video but despite being unable to guarantee the video clip would be used they would still pay the $50. The message went on to say that if they did not hear from us they would assume we had no problem with them using the clip, payment or not, and that they would move forward with their production.

I responded back curious about the offer but in the back of my mind I also wondered if this might be a phishing attempt. Prior to my response I did do some research on the info the individual had provided in their email and found a couple red flags:

I went looking for a website based on the company name the individual used in their initial email. When I tried to access the site the first thing that came up was a warning that there was a problem with the site’s security certificate. The problem was that it was issued for an entirely different domain than the one I was visiting for the production company. On top of that there was no website behind that warning – it was an admin page to set the site up on Parallels, which is desktop virtualization, hosting and cloud services company. It was also trying to use port 19638 in the address for some reason.

I went to the YouTube page for the user who sent me the email to see what types of videos the company already had collected together or posted. It was blank. No videos, no user data or avatar. There was an indication that the last time it was used or accessed was October 2011 but that was it.

So with these red flags raised I decided to write back and see what info they wanted from me to move forward. The response came back in a very short period of time.

They only had a couple of pieces of info they needed:

A PayPal address to send the payment

A signed release form

A regular email address so they could send the form

I responded back with a generic email address and said we could sort out the PayPal address once the release was signed, etc. Their reply came back very quickly to say they had sent the form and then asked if I had a Hotmail address or a similar one.

I wrote back and asked why that was needed the reply was It’s just so I can send over the paperwork. That was slightly confusing as the previous reply had indicated they sent the form to the generic email address I provided. I considered this another red flag to get an additional email address for some reason. They asked me to sign the form and send it back as soon as I could.

Now this next step I do not recommend you do at home – I did this in a very controlled environment – but I opened up the Word document they sent as a release form to see what info they were requesting. Here is what they asked me for:

Full name

Address

Phone Number

Fax Number

Signature

Now anyone of these pieces of info on their own are fairly innocuous however all put together might allow someone to use them to access accounts through some type of social engineering including scanning the signature.

So at this point I was convinced, based on all the red flags that had been raised, that this was not a straight forward attempt to legally use the clip.

I wrote them back one last time and expressed my concerns and stated that I would not be filling out the form. I informed them I had changed the usage rights on the clip to Creative Commons and that if they wanted to use it under that all they had to do was provide proper attribution – no $50 payment required.

Funny – it has been two days now and not one reply to my final email – no thank you for your consideration, permission, etc. After having a flurry of replies back and forth over the course of one day I think if this had been a legitimate effort to license the clip then there would have been a quick reply to say thanks, etc.

Now this may not have been any attempt to phish information from me but with all these red flags, genuine or not, you must opt to not divulge a lot of personal information in a situation like this.

Better safe than sorry is a great motto when it comes to these situations.

So, have you ever seen anything like this before? Let’s talk about it in the comments.

I tell you what we are lucky 2012 is a leap year because the 29th of February is turning into a very busy day for Microsoft.

Two days ago the news broke that Microsoft Flight will be available to the public on 29 February 2012 and today press invites were sent out for a Windows Consumer Preview event that will be held in Barcelona, Spain on the last day of February 2012.

No other details have been given about the event although I think based on past confirmation that the Windows 8 Consumer Preview will be released in late February we should be fairly confident that they will be unveiling the Windows 8 Consumer Preview to the public and making it available for download.

It is interesting however, that the date of this event is during the annual Mobile World Congress which is all about mobile devices and Windows 8 is Microsoft’s first true foray into an operating system that is built for tablet use as opposed to an OS like Windows 7 which is touch enabled.

Interestingly enough I will be in Redmond that week attending the 2012 Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Summit and that means I will travel out there prepared to install the Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my Acer Iconia Tab W500 and my Asus Eee PC 1000HE netbook. Who knows we might also hear some good stuff about Windows 8 that week as well.

The event happens in Barcelona from 3PM to 5PM Central European Time (CET) so if you’re curious when that is happening for you here is a time and date conversion chart.

There is also no word if this event will be webcast so expect more details to come together as the event gets closer.

Our updates this week for these two themes have flip-flopped from last week in that the Bing Maps Aerial theme has six new images compared to only two last week and the Bing Desktop theme only gets two updates this week instead of the six new images last week.

Never is any sense to how many images we get in each of them when they get updated but they always seem to get updated with some great images.

Enjoy!

The cross pollination of Microsoft software onto other platforms continues with the release of OneNote Mobile for the Android Market.

According to a post over at the OneNote Blog by Michael Oldenburg this means OneNote is now available on Windows Phone, iPhone, iPad and now Android.

If you’re already using OneNote on your PC, the mobile versions of OneNote let you take your notes with you — from simple lists and to-dos to full-fledged notebooks which you can share with your friends, family, co-workers, or classmates. With a free Microsoft SkyDrive account, you can easily sync all of your OneNote notebooks so they’re always up-to-date and accessible from your mobile device, your Web browser, or your computer.

His blog post highlights the following features for the app on Android:

Text formatting, images, and bulleted lists

To-do lists with clickable checkboxes

Quick photo capture with your phone’s camera

Quick access to recent notes

Store and access multiple OneNote notebooks

Sync to your free SkyDrive account for access anywhere

Offline access to your notes

Option to sync notebooks only over a Wi-Fi connection

Built-in spelling checker

Support for external hyperlinks

Table editing

There is a nice set of screenshots over in the blog post and a caveat when it comes to free and unlimited use.

Basically, the app is a free download and can be used for up to 500 notes at no charge. In order to go beyond the initial free 500 notes there is a one time fee of $4.99 to have unlimited notes. He does state that the fee is not required and you will still be able to view, sync and delete existing notes but you will not be able to edit or create new ones on your Android handset.

The delayed Kinect Star Wars game now has a release date and things look pretty solid that it is accurate. The game and a special edition bundle will be available on 03 April 2012.

This will also not be your run of the mill game release either. Microsoft will be offering a Xbox 360 Limited Edition Kinect Star Wars Bundle, which is available for pre-order from Amazon starting today, for the grand sum of $449.00 with pre-order pricing guarantees.

This bundle will come packed with Star Wars goodness including:

R2-D2 themed Xbox 360 console

C-3PO themed wireless controller

Kinect Sensor – but this one is white instead of black

Kinect Star Wars Game

Kinect Adventures which is the standard free game that is bundled with all Kinect for Xbox 360 devices

320GB Hard Drive

Now let’s do some math because when you initially look at that price tag of $449 it sure sounds like a lot of money but in reality it is a great deal for a Star wars themed console.

A normal Xbox 360 Kinect Bundle currently retails for $388.01 and that system has the console, Kinect sensor, Kinect Adventures game and a 250GB hard drive while the Kinect Star Wars game retails for $50. That is a total of $448 for your non-official bundle.

So you get the very cool Stars Wars themed R2-D2 console, a C-3PO gold controller, a white Kinect sensor, 70GB of extra hard drive space, Kinect Adventures and Kinect Star Wars for just $1 more.

Do I need to go further?

The bundle is a great deal if you do not already own one of the Xbox 360 Slim models and want to upgrade your current console to the Slim version and all the benefits that brings you.

Of course, if you want to pre-order the Kinect Star Wars game itself you can do that at Amazon as well for just $49.96.

Whatever your choice in a couple of months we are going to be swinging light sabers in homes all over the world!

Today Microsoft and AARP have released the results of a research report they conducted which sought to find out how online communications and social networking are impacting family relationships.

What they found was the use of these various communications mediums significantly improved those relationships by allowing them to more easily keep in touch and up to date on what is happening with each other.

The survey responses were from individuals ranging in age from 13 to 75.

Some highlights from the survey include:

83% considered online communications as helpful amongst family members.

Teenagers indicated that the quantity (70%) and quality (67%) of communications with distant family members increased using online tools. Those 39 and over agreed at 63% and 57% respectively.

30% of those surveyed want their family to communicate more using social networking. The younger users wanted this more than twice as much as older respondents (52% vs 21%).

The opinions on which tools to use also differed significantly. 63% of those aged 13-25 preferred the use of text messages compared to only 31% in the 39-75 year old range.

When it comes to email 60% of those aged 59-75 prefer email, followed by those aged 39-58 (56%) and the younger generation 18-25 at 46% and 13-17 year olds at 36%. Almost a 180 degree flip between email and text messages.

30% of grandparents and 29% of teens/young adults believe that connecting online has helped them understand each other better.

When it comes to security and safety all groups wish they knew more about keeping themselves and their information safe online.

58% wish they knew more about how to keep personal information private

50% want to know how to safeguard their devices

Younger Internet users want more information than older respondents about using social networks safely (38% vs 27% respectively).

As a result of this survey Microsoft and AARP offer these tips to families:

Use social networks more safely:

Look for Settings or Options in services like Facebook and Twitter to manage who can see your profile or photos tagged with your name, how people can search for you and make comments, and how to block people.

Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want to see on a billboard.

Be selective about accepting friends; regularly reassess who has access to your pages, and review what they post about you.

Help protect sensitive personal information

Before you enter sensitive data, look for signs that a webpage is secure — a web address with "https" and a closed padlock beside it.

Never give sensitive info (like an account number or password) or call a number in response to a request in email or IM or on a social network.

Think carefully before you respond to pleas for money from "family members," deals that sound too good to be true, or other scams.

Parents and grandparents should have regular conversations with kids, keeping communications open:

Negotiate clear guidelines for web, mobile and online game use that fit your children’s maturity level and your family values.

Watch your kids for signs of online bullying, such as being upset when they are online or a reluctance to go to school.

Be the administrator of your home computer; use age-appropriate family safety settings to help you keep track of what your kids are doing online. For example, in all editions of the Windows 7 operating system, you can create separate accounts for each family member.

Pay attention to what kids do and whom they meet online. Revisit regularly.

One of the commercials shown during last night’s Super Bowl was from Best Buy. In it they highlight several individuals who created various technologies that we use each and every day. The laugh out loud part of the commercial is when the two Words With Friends creators are caught with their games on by the flight attendant while they are seated aboard an airplane that is getting ready to take off. Very creative use of main stream stories and buzz!

Here is the commercial:

In a press release this morning, Reuben Katz the Geeklist CEO and Co-founder, seems to take offense to the commercial in the way it highlighted these technology innovators.

"Our entire product is based on the ‘I create’ or ‘I built’ concept. It’s the best way for us to highlight great work by developers." Stated Reuben Katz, the Geeklist CEO and Co-founder. Geeklist launched in private beta last August and uses Achievement Cards to showcase great work developers have done. "This is the first ever Achievement-based platform, allowing us to see who built what, what technologies they used to build it and who they built it with,"

The press release goes on to draw a correlation between the “I created…” phraseology used by each of the individuals in this Best Buy commercial and the fact that one of the copyrighters for the ad agency which created the commercial, Crispin, Porter and Bogusky, is on the Geeklist private beta and apparently has been for several months.

So is this all sour grapes or a genuine concern that an insider used their knowledge from the site’s private beta to help write this ad content?

I am very glad we have that extra day this year so that Microsoft Flight can get off the ground!

According to a tweet from Xbox Live’s @MajorNelson, aka Larry Hryb, the Games For Windows Live flying simulation game will be released to the public on 29 February 2012.

The game has been tested over the last several weeks during a beta test by the software company.

According to a early January press release the game will use a freemium model once it is released. This means the initial download will be at no charge and additional elements of the game will be available as downloadable content some of which will be free and others that the gamer will have to pay for.

There is a lot of buzz around this upcoming release as many avid flight simmers have been looking for a new flight simulator ever since the Microsoft Flight Simulator team was cut at Microsoft as a cost savings measure.

According to a survey by InMobi, a mobile advertising network, that was conducted during last night’s big game nearly 40% of viewers grabbed their mobile devices to get more information about advertisements as they viewed them during the game. Respondents also indicated they would spend at least 30 minutes on their mobile devices during the course of the game.

Anne Frisbie, Vice President and Managing Director, North America, InMobi, comments: "Mobile is an amazing channel for reaching consumers when they are in a lean-back entertainment-oriented mindset. Savvy advertisers will allocate more dollars to mobile advertising, either in conjunction with TV ads or through mobile-only advertising campaigns during similar sporting events and key holiday weekends throughout the year."

InMobi also reported that twice as many of those surveyed used their devices during the first half of the game as those which did during the second half.

Some additional key findings from the survey which was answered by over 1,100 mobile users and distributed on InMobi’s mobile advertising network were:

45% estimated they would spend 30 minutes or more on their mobile phone during the game.

39% used their mobile device in response to a TV commercial during the game by doing one or more of the following: discussing commercials, getting more information about an advertised product, or watching TV ads again.

30% reported using their mobile devices most during commercials.

27% downloaded a Super Bowl app.

There is no indication on what was considered a mobile device so this may have included tablets as well as mobile phones, etc. I personally used both a Windows 8 based tablet and my Windows Phone during the game.

Let me start off by saying I think the commercials this year were not nearly as good as they have been in the past. Many of them lacked a hook to make them memorable. At a cost of $3.5 million for 30 seconds of air time that seems like a waste of money but I guess the proof is in the impact it has on future sales.

I also think that all the previews of the commercials over the days prior to the game made their broadcast during the match much less impactful as they appeared on TV.

There were some note worthy ones though and so I give you my picks broken down by quarter, half time and post game time frames.

1st Quarter

Jump in the cage and shut the door!

2nd Quarter

Nice job by VW in connecting to a very popular and viral commercial from last year.

Half Time

All I will say about this one is stick around for the end because you do not see it coming!

3rd Quarter

It is always nicer to share and not be a tease.

4th Quarter

Nice touch at the end of this to support rescue dogs.

Post Game

I was not expecting this after the game – it was better than some of the in game ads that were played.
