Security Tuesday has arrived as I mentioned last week in my Security Update Tuesday Approaching on 10 Nov 2009 post. So before you read this head to Windows Update and get your system updating to keep it protected.

As expected we have more info on the six vulnerabilities:

MS09-063 – Critical: Vulnerability in Web Services on Devices API Could Allow Remote Code Execution (973565) – Version:1.0

Severity Rating: Critical – Revision Note: V1.0 (November 10, 2009): Summary: This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Web Services on Devices Application Programming Interface (WSDAPI) on the Windows operating system. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an affected Windows system receives a specially crafted packet. Only attackers on the local subnet would be able to exploit this vulnerability. This security update is rated Critical for all supported editions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

MS09-064 – Critical: Vulnerability in License Logging Server Could Allow Remote Code Execution (974783) – Version:1.0

Severity Rating: Critical – Revision Note: V1.0 (November 10, 2009): Summary: This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Windows 2000. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an attacker sent a specially crafted network message to a computer running the License Logging Server. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of the system. Firewall best practices and standard default firewall configurations can help protect networks from attacks that originate outside the enterprise perimeter.

MS09-065 – Critical: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Remote Code Execution (969947) – Version:1.0

Severity Rating: Critical – Revision Note: V1.0 (November 10, 2009): Summary: This security update resolves several privately reported vulnerabilities in the Windows kernel. The most severe of the vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user viewed content rendered in a specially crafted Embedded OpenType (EOT) font. In a Web-based attack scenario, an attacker would have to host a Web site that contains specially crafted embedded fonts that are used to attempt to exploit this vulnerability. In addition, compromised Web sites and Web sites that accept or host user-provided content could contain specially crafted content that could exploit this vulnerability. An attacker would have no way to force users to visit a specially crafted Web site. Instead, an attacker would have to convince the user to visit the Web site, typically by getting them to click a link in an e-mail message or Instant Messenger message that takes the user to the attacker’s site.

MS09-066 – Important: Vulnerability in Active Directory Could Allow Denial of Service (973309) – Version:1.0

Severity Rating: Important – Revision Note: V1.0 (November 10, 2009): Summary: This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Active Directory directory service, Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM), and Active Directory Lightweight Directory Service (AD LDS). The vulnerability could allow denial of service if stack space was exhausted during execution of certain types of LDAP or LDAPS requests. This vulnerability only affects domain controllers and systems configured to run ADAM or AD LDS.

MS09-067 – Important: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (972652) – Version:1.0

Severity Rating: Important – Revision Note: V1.0 (November 10, 2009): Summary: This security update resolves several privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Excel. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Excel file. An attacker who successfully exploited any of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

MS09-068 – Important: Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution (976307) – Version:1.0

Severity Rating: Important – Revision Note: V1.0 (November 10, 2009): Summary: This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Word file. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

System Imaging and Restoral with Windows 7

One of the tenants behind Windows 7 is making your everyday tasks easier. One of the areas that Microsoft has made much simpler to use is the backup feature in the OS itself.

For anyone who has ever lost data due a hard drive or computer crash and did not have a backup system in place, I am one of these folks myself, then you know how important that backup process is. Especially if it was your significant others computer and it resulted in the loss of irreplaceable files. Again, I am raising my hand right here!

Today I use Windows Home Server to back up my home computers and it takes care of business. However, not everyone has a Windows Home Server and may be looking for a different method of backing up those critical files on your home PC’s.

One way included in Windows 7 is the Backup Applet in the Control Panel. There are two types of backups available to you. The first is your file by file back up process which you can set to incrementally back up your system each day, week, month etc.

The second one is what I am going to cover today and that is creating a System Image of your Windows 7 installation that can be restored in case of a catastrophic failure of your hard drive which has Windows installed on it.

The process is quite simple, only has a few steps and takes about 30 minutes or so. I base that 30 minutes on my system which backed up 69GB to my extra internal hard drive. Your mileage will vary based on the size of your installation and whether you back up to hard drive or DVD (lots of DVD’s). I recommend an external or spare internal hard drive.

So to get started you need to bring up the backup/restore applet in the control panel which is located at Control Panel>System and Security>Backup and Restore. Easy way to get there is via the Start Menu search bar and just type in Backup.

Select the Create System Image link.

Select the media you want to store your back up on.

Once selected it summarizes what will be backed up. Start the back up.

Once the image is created you will be prompted to create a system repair disc that will allow you to restore your system image as well as a few other things top repair your system.

Select the drive to use for creating your repair disc. Notice no hard drive options – that is on purpose.

There ya go – just a handful of steps to have a solid system image of your computer in case of a system crash. I think this process in combination with a daily file based back up will keep your data safe.

Unfortunately, the reports of the demise of GeoCities are true.

Mark down the 26th of October 2009 as the day GeoCities shuttered operations. If many of you are like me it was GeoCities that allowed you to put your first webpage online. They made it easy to have an online presence in those early days of the graphical World Wide Web (mid 1990’s).

It was back in 1995 that I started this website right there on GeoCities at http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/1094 (connects to the WayBack Machine Archive). I cut my eye teeth in those early days learning HTML and coding things to try and make the site stand out. I even got invited to be a GeoCities Expert to help others out in the GeoCities Community and I still have my GeoCities coffee mug that I earned through visits and banner ads on my site. In fact I earned quite a bit of hardware and software through that program.

I actually first heard of GeoCities through word of mouth. That is something that is quite rare these days as information tends to be exposed first via email, social media and other Internet outlets.

Based on this personal, verbal recommendation I went home that day and checked out GeoCities. I had my address and a vague plan of what I wanted to make a site about and then I set off to learn what I could about HTML and building web pages.

That first version of this site was called Another Windows 95 Links and Resources Page. The site name was all about timing – it was August of 1995 and Windows 95 had just launched. It was one of the hottest topics at the time because it was so revolutionary compared to earlier versions of Windows. There are also so many websites dedicated to Windows 95 that I decided to call mine Another one of them

So I scoured the web looking for other pages relating to Windows 95 and started building a collection of links. That site had a single page – with centered links running the length of it. No pages, no breaks – nothing but links. I am not sure I could have gotten more basic than that.

I kept the site on GeoCities until 2001 which was right around the time that they started to throttle bandwidth for users sites. Mine was quite popular so I saw this as an issue of course.

I actually purchased the sites own domain name in 1998 and used it as a redirect to my GeoCities address. It was http://www.anotherwin95.com. It stayed under that name until a few years ago when I finally decided to update the domain on the 10 year anniversary of the site being online. That is when it became http://WindowsObserver.com and has remained that way ever since. I still own the http://AnotherWin95.com domain and it re-directs to this site. Not sure I will ever give up that domain.

Bottom line is that GeoCities gave many of us our start in this online world and it has earned its rightful place in the history of the World Wide Web. Thanks for the opportunity and swag GeoCities!

Security Update Tuesday Approaching on 10 Nov 2009

As regular as clockwork – the advance notification bulletin has been released by Microsoft for next weeks scheduled security updates.

There are not many details on the bulletin and this advance notification will be replaced next week by the actual November bulletin summary. However, it at least lets us know what to expect.

Six different issues are being addressed. Three are Critical and three are Important.

Five of them relate to Remote Code Execution and one is a Denial of Service issue. Four of them related to Microsoft Windows and two of them are concerning Microsoft Office.

Of course there is more to follow next week but in the interim you can sign up to receive all of these types of bulletins so you can always be notified in a timely manner.

Twitter Lists Available for All

The folks over at Twitter announced this week the wide spread availability of its long awaited and talked about lists functionality.

I was lucky enough to be part of the 5% or so who got to test the Lists in the early stages of their exposure to the Twitter World and frankly I like what I saw. The challenge on those initial days was that folks you may have added to your lists could not see themselves on there if they did not have access to the feature.

There was a brief period where the Twitter techs increased the amount of users in the beta test but it was really just a drop in the bucket when you think of the sheer number of users on the system.

Luckily that period was very brief and the feature was removed from everyone while the Twitter techs made final tweaks to the code and then started rolling it out to everyone this past week. Since then activity has been steady on the creation and sharing of lists. In case you missed the spot – you can see the number of lists your on next to your Followers and Following counts directly beneath your bio.

I have seen a lot of discussion about lists and there is even a site in beta, Listorious, that will feature lists created by and for users. I am sure there will be others as well as the integration of lists into all of the various Twitter applications out there. Both Tweetdeck and Seesmic have already indicated updates will be out soon for their applications.

Of course – just like being followed by a popular Tweeter – being on one of their lists will be of significance. Just like we put importance and give credibility to those with large followings on this service – if your on a lot of lists then it is going to provide the same type of validity to your info and tweets.

Add to that the fact that each list can be Followed by others and you add another dimension to the popularity and validity of that listing.

Use of these lists are already ranging from communities, companies, services and Best Of Name Your Category lists. There are even some out there soliciting inputs to be on their lists for some of those areas.

Lists sound like the Google Page Rank of Twitter. What do you think?

Airport Layovers Before the Internet and Cell Phones

After a week long trip to the Middle East I am here in Dulles International Airport as I make my way back home to Jacksonville, Florida.

I of course have everything I need to manage this lengthy (5 1/2 hours) layover including my netbook, wireless Internet access and even my Blackjack II with a full data plan to read my email and send tweets.

That got me thinking back to the days when we did not have wireless Internet and cell phones and so I posed this question to the Twitter Community:

Within minutes I had a couple of replies from @sboots, @Area224 and @vb508 who mentioned some old stalwarts such as magazines, newspapers, pay phones and yes even your token airport bar or lounge. I remember standing in line for a payphone to make that quick call home – now the banks of phones just sit empty most of the time.

Everyone of those things were right on the mark. Many are still around today but I am not sure which is winning out. Walk into an airport with free WiFi and it seems as if every person with a laptop has it open and connected. If the airport has WiFi but it is a pay service then you will likely see less folks connected and that will depend on their layover time. Is it worth $7 to connect for 30 minutes and a better deal for a 2, 3 or 4 hour layover? Actually neither should be considered a good deal because that price is normally good for 24 hours of being connected.

Books, magazines and papers must still be a very viable option for travelers as well otherwise all of these bookstores in airport terminals would need a bail out. They have even got creative to encourage book purchases by offering a trade in program that gives you credit towards a new book and they in turn have a slightly used book to mark down and sell again to a new set of eyes.

Ultimately I does not really matter how you chose to pass your travel time – everyone will do what they do no matter what I write or what anyone else thinks. That is the beauty isn’t it? Our choices have increased to provide options for every person who travels.

Pick what suits you and do your thing.

Windows 7 and Built In FTP Site Browsing

If you want to browse your favorite FTP server and not have to download extra software then this post is for you.

In Windows 7 open up a Windows Explorer and type in the address to the FTP server your trying to get to. Provide the username and password if necessary – you can also select Anonymous Log in and Save Password at the bottom of that dialog box:

Once that data is entered and you press the Log On button you will see your FTP server as if it was part of your local drive:

You can click your way around the entire drive structure, perform all the same things you can do in Windows Explorer including drag and drop. Of course that will also depend on your settings and permissions on the server.

Now this is nothing new in Windows – the functionality was there in Windows Vista as well. However, I think Windows 7 does a much better job of advertising that functionality with this alert when you browse an FTP site in Internet Explorer:

So with that timely notice I headed to the Page menu in IE and way down at the bottom of that list is the entry to Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer.

If you click on this from an IE Windows where your currently browsing a FTP site the address will be carried over to the Log on As window (first one shown above).

Hope this proves handy to many of you who need this functionality for simple and easy access to FTP server files. If you have the right permissions you can even CHMOD files and add or delete directories and files from within Windows Explorer as well.
