A major part of our meetings are the demos given by people who have released apps.

If you want to demo at a future meeting (or the upcoming WPBarCamp) then you might want to know what to consider when giving a demo.

When people give app demos we ask them to answer the following questions:

What does the app do?

Why did you build it?

Were there any problems you had during development? And how did you overcome those issues?

What did you learn from the development of the app?

What’s the best thing about the app?

What do you have planned for future versions?

That’s it. Very simple.
And because it’s a subject you know well (your app) you’ll find it really easy.
So no excuse for not giving it a go then ;)

If you want to bring your own laptop that’s great. We recommend ensuring that everything runs fine at 1024×768 to ensure it works with any projector and if you’re showing code, be sure to set the font size in Visual Studio to at least 14pt before you start.

If you want to borrow a laptop for your demo then that’s fine too. Just bring a copy of your XAP, PPT or whatever on a USB drive.

We strongly recommend having a backup of your files available (privately if necessary) on-line too. Yes, we’ve had people turn up in the past, only to discover that their laptop had died or the USB drive wasn’t working.

Yes, we’ve reached double figures for the second time!

Continuing with our theme from last month, we’ll be continuing to look beyond Windows Phone and the lessons we can learn from other platforms and the lessons, knowledge and experiences we can take with us if we take Windows Phone apps to other platforms too.
A couple of WPUG regulars will be sharing their experiences:
Stuart will be talking about his experiences with creating an MVVM solution that also works with MonoTouch & MonoDroid
Paul will be talking about his experiences of porting applications between iPhone and Windows Phone and vice versa.

As ever, we’re also providing the opportunity for people to demonstrate the apps they’ve made and share some of their experiences and lessons learnt. We have a couple lined up, but if you have an app you want to show or an experience you want to share then please get in touch.

If you’re planning on coming, please head on over to Eventbrite or MeetUp to register.

If you were holding off from registering for our meeting this month until you knew who would be speaking then wait no longer.

As announced on his blog, Colin Eberhardt (@ColinEberhardt) will be travelling down from Edinburgh to talk about PhoneGap. (See a full synopsis of what he’s planning to talk about on his blog.

Also speaking will be Tristan (@codeglee) and Neil (@DukeOfMuppets) from Compsoft. (You may recognize them from the Redshift alphalabs.cc project.)
They spend their days developing for a variety of mobile platforms and will be talking about their experiences and sharing some tips on what Windows Phone developers can learn from other platforms.

Unfortunately our other speaker, who was going to talk about what it’s like to transition from being an iOS developer to a Windows Phone one has had to postpone his talk until a future date.
This means that we have an opening if anyone else would like to share their experiences of developing for more than just Windows Phone.

And we’ll also be having a quick recap of any relevant announcements from MWC so far. Plus the usual drinking and socialising.

Just in case you need the reminder. We’ll be at the Shooting Star again and it’s on a TUESDAY.

If you’re a follower of the @wpug twitter feed you’ll have noticed that it’s been a bit quiet over the last month or so.
There are various reasons for this that I won’t bother you with. (I’m fine by the way-thanks for asking.)

This means that there’s been loads of news, articles, blogs, etc. which I haven’t been tweeting about. As I’ve just caught up on my reading lists this leaves the question about how to share the relevant articles? I considered drip feeding* them into the twitter feed.
This would mean that they potentially get to the regular audience and appear in the archive which can be a useful resource when searching (hint).

The other alternative is just to publish them here. This is what I’m doing.

* Not drip feeding them and just tweeting them all in a hurry would be likely to upset followers whose time-lines I end up filling.
