The SevenMizer application was designed to help you transform your Windows XP, MCE or Server 2003 into the look of Windows 7. Therefore nearly 400 files with new Icons, pictures as well as videos are modified. This means that SevenMizer does not provide own files and change your system files.

That has the advantage that SevenMizer works with each language and no changes of the language specifics are made. The installer is so developed that you have completely the change which will be modified and which not. If newer files are already present in the system by updates, this is recognized by the un-installer and only the modified files will be replaced.

Circle Dock belongs to a genre of programs known collectively as "Application Docks and Launchers" which first appeared on Apple's Macintosh computers and later on Windows-based PCs. Most of these programs use a single line of items, unlike Circle Dock which uses "rings". In fact, the term "Circle Dock" is now a bit of a misnomer since it can also present itself as an elliptical dock.

Application Docks and Launchers are designed to hold shortcuts to programs and display them in a convenient form. "Ah, but isn't that what the Desktop is designed to do?", you ask. Well, yes it is, but if you have a few windows open, finding the right Desktop shortcut can be fiddly and inconvenient. Circle Dock will conveniently appear when you need it and disappear when you don't.

Unlike other Dock programs - and indeed the Desktop - Circle Dock allows you to have multiple layers so that you can group similar, or allied, items within folders. Folders can contain other folders as well as documents and programs.

Now for those who want a bit of technical information, Circle Dock is a multi-layered, multi-threaded application. At the base is the (hidden) Main Window which is responsible for controlling the application as well as sending and receiving messages from the Dock's other windows. All the visible elements - the background, centre button, dock items and their labels - are all unique windows created, positioned, synchronised and controlled by the Main Window.

Compared to other similar programs, Circle Dock is very frugal with memory: with 8 Dock Items defined and the Dock running but hidden, Circle Dock consumes around 600 KiB on the author's 32-bit Windows 7 PC. On the same PC and with the same number of dock items, Rocket Dock requires in excess of 6 MiB - ten times more than Circle Dock! The only time Circle Dock will consume a significant amount of memory is when the main Properties dialog is displayed; however once this dialog is dismissed, the program's housekeeping routines quickly free-up memory and return it to the system pool.

LogonStudio is another entry in the excellent line of environment-controlling programs from Stardock. Although it's easy to swap in a new background wallpaper onto your screen, the "Log In" screen is another story. This app makes it just as easy to customize that screen, too.

LogonStudio Vista comes with four main options: Load, Download, Create, and Upload. Load lets you use Stardock's theme packages, while Download takes users to Stardock's WinCustomize.com community, where they can download free background images. Create lets you load a standard image format, like JPEG, into the program's database, and Upload takes users to WinCustomize.com to share their designs with others. The layout is familiar and basic, with the options in the narrow left nav and the main window filled with thumbnails. The app comes with four extra backgrounds to get you started.
We found the process to get a basic JPEG image onto our screen to be a bit convoluted, with the program needing the image to be loaded via the Create option, but once there it was easy to use. The option labels are a bit confusing, but other than that this is a fairly reasonable piece of freeware for those who want to doll up their Vista log-in screens.

One feature we particularly enjoyed from Windows 98 ™ on up was the ability to change the wallpaper of a folder as well as the text color of the icons in that folder. This would help make each folder easier to identify and would bring a personal touch to my PC.

As Windows XP ™ Home/Pro was released, many have realized that Microsoft had removed our ability to change wallpaper of our folders! Shortly after we realized the trouble on our machines, we got to work on a solution. We've found that Microsoft™ did not remove the ability to change the background and text color but instead hid the interface.

If you’re one of those people who spends most of their free time tinkering with your mobile phone ringtone or reorganizing your bedroom, then StyleXP could become your new favorite toy. The application promises to expand the customizability of Windows XP and gives you the power to install new themes that break the mould of the existing XP shell.

The program works by patching your operating system to accept unassigned styles, scores of which are available for download from the web. Once you’ve applied a style you can tweak virtually any aspect of the appearance, including the font size, screensaver, colours, menu transparency, or even the boot screen. What’s more, if you’re particularly artistically minded you can create your own elements in a graphics editor and apply them to the skin.

Although the developer has made strides towards making the interface as simple as possible, there are so many customization options that it can be a little daunting for new users to the program.

There’s no doubt that the temptation to make Windows look like OSX or apply a ‘Windows Pirate Edition’ boot screen is pretty appealing, but pimping your OS in this way does come with a risk. It’s worth bearing in mind that because of the way the application writes files to your System Folder you could end up doing damage to your machine, especially if you install a patch or a new service pack.

Having said this, we’ve experienced no problems yet (touch wood) and also found that it runs pretty smoothly without sucking too much RAM. You can choose to keep Style XP locked in the System Tray, or release it so that it uses no resources, which is a refreshing thing to see from a developer. With so many themes and customization options available, Style XP is well worth a look if you fancy a change of scenery on your desktop, but keep in mind the risks involved in using a patching program such as this
