And they have already been approved by some of our most loyal friends and clients at the wine tasting we organised at our place on 10 April. Quinta das Herédias, located in the demarcated Douro region, in the municipality of Tabuaço, in the parish of Granjinha, along the right bank of the river Távora. This one holds 30 ha of vines, some of them over 100 years old, with schist soil with some granitic outcrops. It lies at an altitude between 250 to 470 m, with hot summers and little annual precipitation This estate covers 108 hectares, of which 30 hectares are vineyards and 35 hectares are olive groves. The vines, which are between 30 and 130 years old, are situated between 200 and 600 metres above sea level and produce an average of 220,000 bottles a year. The range of wines on tasting was varied: rosé, white and red harvest; Reserve red; Grande Reserve red, sparkling wine and tawny and ruby Port... Now we're sharing these fantastic wines with you all. Herédias 2024 White - Ageing in barrels has allowed this wine to bring out all its more mineral characteristics. Floral in aroma, but in harmony with the barrel, this wine is very complete, with a remarkable structure and volume from the first taste. The citrus notes and minerality give the wine freshness, while keeping the aftertaste vibrant and long Herédias 2023 Rosé - Salmon in colour with pinkish nuances, this wine stands out for its fresh and intense aroma of raspberry, redcurrant and earl grey. The palate has a complex attack with notes of plum and orange zest. With a saline and persistent finish, combined with a crisp acidity, we find a balanced and striking rosé. Herédias Reserva 2020 Red - Intense ruby colour. Young and full of fruit. Notes of wild fruit sand discreet notes of toast from the barrel. Excellent freshness, complexity and acidity. Long and persistent aftertaste Herédias Grande Reserva 2020 Red- Deep red colour. Complexity in aroma with notes of black fruit spice and cocoa. In the mouth it shows intense concentration, with firm tannins and excellent structure. Its acidity gives the wine freshness and balance. Long and rich aftertaste Herédias Super Reserva Bruto - Pale golden colour. On the nose it exhibits deep aromas of citrus fruit and dry nuts, as well as pronounced vanilla, toasted bread and biscuit. On the mouth, the mousse is creamy, delicate, and very persistent, creating an enveloping texture that balances out the vibrant acidity. A versatile sparkling that is full of personality. Herédias Vintage 2019- Deep ruby colour.  Very dense but at the same time balanced. Notes of figs, black husks and some spices. Very elegant and fresh in the mouth. The balance between fruit and tannins is perfect. Excellent volume in the mouth, complex and with a long and intense finish. Port with an excellent aging potential. Herédias Tawny 10 Anos- Through a great aromatic character the wine unveils notes of date, walnuts and honey. The harvest, which takes place in August, is manual, and the grapes are crushed, pressed and the must (grape juice) is statically decanted. The fermentation is natural and the ageing takes place in oak barrels for 12 months. It is bottled without racking or filtration. They tried to make their vineyard space as genuine and under-exploited as possible, having found the Serra do Reboredo - the highest altitude in the Douro. Since 2016, they have sought to leverage the best that the vineyard has to offer, while respecting the history, tradition and people of the region where they were born. The name of this wine takes us back to a legend of Paredes da Beira. This town had been conquered by the Moors, when two brave brothers and the remaining Christians got together to defeat them, by the river. For their bravery in killing more than a thousand Moors, this place is still known today as the 'Vale dos Mil' Single vineyard "Vale dos Mil" 2020 red wine is produced with Old Vines, and is the result of a blend of red grape varieties. The grapes are hand picked, carefully selected and then crushed by foot in a granite press where it ferments through natural yeasts. It ages for 16 months in French oak barrels. It has an intense ruby colour and an intense and complex aroma of resin, eucalyptus, clove, red fruit (cherry, redcurrant) and a touch of rock-rose. "Chão" means flat area and "Eremitas" refers to the monks of the São Paulo order. There is evidence of uninterrupted wine production here since the 14th century. It is also known that the vineyard was so important that in 1397 a Papal Bull dictated that the "Pauperes Hermitas" be exempt from paying taxes. In addition, the only Phoenician wine amphora in the interior of Portugal was discovered, dating from the 8th century B.C., which translates into about 3000 years of history connected to wine.  This set of Chão dos Eremitas wines, created by António Maçanita, includes two white wines and two red wines. The vineyard is located at the southern foot of Serra d'Ossa and the grapes are from certified production, without the use of herbicides. Alicante Branco Alicante Branco wine is 100% Alicante Branco, which, for years, was considered one of the most important grape varieties of the old set of vineyards in Alentejo. This grape variety is also known as Boal de Alicante or Boal Cachudo. It is a unique wine in Portugal, being the exclusive grape variety of this country, which makes this wine unique in the world. The harvest is manual and takes place during the night, going through direct pressing, without sulphites until the end of fermentation. It is not decanted and natural fermentation takes place in old barrels. This wine has a citrine yellow colour, with an intense aroma and notes of grapefruit, peach and gunpowder. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, unctuous and persistent. Its concentration goes well with fish dishes (oven or casserole) and simpler poultry dishes.  In 2018, it obtained 18/20 points by both Revista dos Vinhos and V Grandes Escolhas. Trincadeira das Pratas Trincadeira das Pratas wine is 100% tamarez, one of the most important white grape varieties of the old vineyards of the Alentejo, although the term 'tamarez' has now fallen into disuse and is now called 'Trincadeira das Pratas'. The harvest of this grape takes place at dawn, passing through direct pressing, without sulphites until the end of fermentation, decanting after 12 hours and fermentation takes place, 50% of which occurs naturally in old barrels and the other 50% occurs in a controlled manner in stainless steel. This is followed by 12 months ageing on primary lees without periodically shaking them (battonage). This wine has a citrine yellow colour, with hints of citrus fruit, almost pineapple, but subtle, and is fresh in the mouth, with good acidity, good texture and an excellent finish. It goes well with fat fish (grilled or oven) and shellfish. In 2018, it obtained 92/100 points from both the expert Robert Parker and the Wine Enthusiast. Tinta Carvalha The wine Tinta Carvalha is 100% tinta carvalha, a variety of the ancient set of vineyards of the Alentejo which, by its role, makes this wine, of ruby colour, disconcerting. The selected grapes undergo natural fermentation and maceration for 40 days, followed by ageing for 12 months in stainless steel vats. On the nose, it is intense and fresh, with notes of bitter red fruit, pomegranate and graphite. In the mouth, the first impression is disquieting. With a very deep elegance, this red wine gives another connotation to the Alentejo. It goes well with fatty fish and casserole meats.  This is the only wine of this grape variety in Portugal, having obtained 92/100 points, in 2020, by the expert Robert Parker. Castelão The wine Castelão is 100% castelão, a variety of the old set of vineyards of Alentejo, in which the grapes are selected in a selection table. It undergoes natural fermentation and after a tanning period of 35 days, it is aged for 18 months in barrels. This wine has a faint ruby garnet colour, a very fine aroma with hints of spices, tobacco and plum. In the mouth it is acidic, fresh, elegant and medium-bodied. In the end it reveals firm tannins. Acquired in 1986 by José Bento dos Santos, the Quinta underwent some replanting in its parcels, which allowed it to create high quality wines. From 2006 onwards, the Quinta started to rely on organic agriculture, changing its image.  The wine Vindima 13 Outubro 2016 was harvested on José Bento dos Santos' 70th birthday, as a tribute to the entire team of the producer, in an attempt to recreate the first harvest of Viognier at Quinta do Monte d'Oiro, in 2003. In 2016, this grape variety was harvested in early September, having left some lines that were harvested on October 13, more than a month later. A total of 1270kg of doirado grapes were then harvested by hand, crushed by direct pressing and fermented in stainless steel vats for 18 days. It's also documented in the famous maps by Joseph James Forrester, in 1843 and 1848.  In the Pombaline era, this geographical area was undervalued by the legislator, however, due to its excellent wines, it became one of the most sought after areas by English exporters, a market to which it exported in the 19th century. Joseph James Forrester, an important figure in the history of Port and Douro wine, had a strong connection with the estate, so it is thought that he rented it or bought its wine production. After his death, the estate was bought by Forrester's heirs in 1866, who, together with his uncle, transformed it into one of the most prominent Port wine brands to this day, and the estate has undergone numerous transformations. Later, Quinta da Cachucha and Quinta do Ujo were annexed to Quinta da Boavista. Times have proven challenging, and during the 20th century, several were the owners of this Douro icon. Since 2020, the estate has belonged to the Sogevinus Group, one of the largest wine groups in the Douro region. Situated in the valley of the river Torto, a few kilometres from the left bank of the Douro river, this 200-year-old estate produces magnificent and unforgettable wines thanks to its sun exposure and the diversity of vineyards. Some of them have been planted recently and others are almost centenary, with several varieties mixed. Vinha do Rio and Vinha da Francisca are two plots of vineyards, from this quinta, from which two different wines are produced. As in port wine, its appearance was also due to randomness. The need to reduce the costs of wine producers on the island and at the same time preserve the wine that made a long journey by sea led to the introduction of vinic alcohol (responsible for stopping the fermentation of the grape and which consequently provides it with greater sweetness). The moment of interruption of the fermentation is made according to the type of wine you want - Dry, Sweet, Medium Dry and Medium Sweet.In order to keep the temperatures constant during the boat trips, the ageing processes called "Canteiro" (barrels were left in the sun to be heated) and "Estufagem" (the wine was kept warm at a constant temperature for months inside huge chambers fed by wood or coal on cold days) were started. Nowadays, although they keep their name, the wine that ages in "Canteiros" remains in barrels supported by wooden beams (called "canteiros") and which are found in the highest floors of the warehouses, where the temperatures are higher, for at least 2 years. Due to the ageing in cask this wine suffers greater oxidation which gives it unique characteristics and intense and complex aromas.In the "Estufagem" process the wine is placed in stainless steel greenhouses, heated by a coil system, where hot water circulates, for a period of never less than 3 months, at a temperature between 45 and 50ºC.Sercial, Malvazia, Boal, Tinta Negra, Bastardo, Verdelho and Moscatel or Terrantez are the grape varieties used in the production of Madeira Wine. Its name (Pedra Manca - oscillating stone) is explained by the existence of large granite stones in the region. The western surroundings of Évora have always been, since Roman times and throughout the centuries, considered as one of the most important quality wine producing regions, and the area has become known as "Lands of Peramanca", given the abundance of these oscillating stones. At the end of the 19th century, the wines produced there won several medals in international competitions. However, by that time, the scourge of phylloxera put an end to the cultivation of vines in almost the whole country and the lands of Peramanca were no exception. Nowadays Pêra-Grave wines are the last known fruits of Quinta de São José de Peramanca. They have unique characteristics due to the fact that their terroir is based on a granite mantle that is between one and a half and two metres deep. Coming from a very old vineyard totally untrained, lost in the heart of the Douro region expresses every little detail of Nature and its terroir. South-facing, in the area of Cima Corgo and planted for over 130 years, this is one of the oldest vineyards in the Douro that we know. The harvest takes place in August. The fermentation took place in a stainless steel vat, with 25% stalk and the period of contact between the solid and liquid parts, lasted for 5 weeks, in a delicate process, with a very light maceration and little extraction. It ages in Fuders, over 60 years old, brought from the Mosel region in Germany. The wine is bottled early to maintain its freshness, minerality, youth and aromatic purity, and is expected to age very well in bottle. Turris 2013, aged 20 months in Fuders and 18 months in bottle. It presents a young and intense color, deep aroma, of great complexity, markedly mineral and crystalline. It impresses with purity and finesse, with very fresh red fruit and notes of spices. In the mouth it is fresh, silky but vibrant and with great tension. The balance between minerality and tannic structure results in a unique complexity and elegance. Violet in colour, with ruby touches, the Turris 2016 is surprisingly fresh and precise. It has a very spicy aroma, with notes of pink pepper, very mineral, combined with the graphite of the schistous soil, and black fruit of blackcurrant. In the mouth it impresses with electricity and elegance, with a very persistent finish. It aged 12 months in Fuders and 24 months in bottle. Over the last few years the Madre de Água project has grown, with the acquisition of other neighbouring farms, and today has an area of 60ha. Surrounded by this area we find a hotel, restaurant, horse riding arena, cheese factory, vineyard and wine cellar, olive trees and orchards (mainly of Pera rocha and apples). In this way, besides the wines, it is possible to find in the market cheeses, olive oil and jams under Madre de Água brand. In the Dão region we find some of the best national wines, with great quality and elegance, and the Madre de Água wines are an excellent example of this. The privileged location of its vineyards, surrounded by a series of hills that protect them from outside influences, give the wines unique characteristics of aroma and flavour. Its wines are produced from different plots and separated by grape varieties. In the white wines are used the varieties Semillon, Gouveio, Viosinho, Arinto, Rabigato, Malvasia Fina and Cerceal from the parish of Barrô and Penajóia (area of transition to the region of vinho verde, with granite soils, cool climate and Atlantic). The harvest of these grapes is manual, made by grape varieties that are pressed and ferment in stainless steel and oak barrels with controlled temperature. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Souzão are the grape varieties used in the production of red wines. These are produced in the municipality of Alijó and are planted in schistous soil with clay outcrops and Mediterranean climate. As with white grapes, red grapes are harvested manually and separated by grape variety. After passing through the sorting mat they are destemmed and lightly crushed, falling into traditional granite presses where, with foot treading twice a day, they macerate and ferment for a few days. This estate produces and bottles wines under the Plainas and Santa Eulália brands. In the production of Plainas White wines the chosen grape varieties are Arinto, Azal and Loureiro. The fermentation of the wines takes place in stainless steel vats and should be served at 8ºC as an accompaniment to fish and seafood. For the Plainas Rosé wine the grape variety used is Espadeiro and, as in the white ones the fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats. E seco, muito seco. A produção baixou muito, mas a maturação das uvas roçou a perfeição. A qualidade do vinho, essa, “é de tal ordem elevada que acreditamos que 2017 será lembrado por ter produzido pequenas quantidades de vinhos incríveis, de assombrosa concentração e intensidade, embora com belíssima compostura e estrutura”. Transcrevemos esta frase do texto de apresentação dos Vintages Symington 2017 por resumir o essencial do que foi dito, na ocasião, pelos representantes desta família “de origem britânica e portuguesa que vive e trabalha no Norte de Portugal desde 1882”, conforme também fizeram questão de sublinhar. THE WINEYARD To produce wines of a unique character, we capitalise to the maximum on the magnificent land of the Upper Douro and maintain the plethora of cultivars, some of which are endemic to this valley.  To give their exceptional fruit, the vines must plunge their roots as deep as possible through the cracks of the schist and slate in search of the groundwater table, and find one of the most balanced water supplies. The varied nature of our lands, the climatic nuances, the diversity of attitudes and exposure of our plots contribute to the unrivalled complexity of our wines. Quinta do Pessegueiro comprises three plots: Pessegueiro, Teixeira, Afurada. THE WINES The wines produced at the Quinta do Pessegueiro are bound to appeal thanks to their superior quality first and foremost, but also because they are the result of a complete and balanced project aimed at showcasing the originality and properties of each small region, in the most honest and most respectful way possible. The wine we present is Aluzé Pessegueiro.  White - This wine has citrus, orange blossom and honeysuckle aromas. The palate is very fresh with a firm acidit. Red - The bouquet is fine and fresh, reminiscent of forest fruits.  There are also some floral and spice notes, such as pepper and carnation.  A very fresh and direct taste in the palate, opening with volume and ending with finesses and precision. Very long fat finish, with balance, elegance and persistence. History Borba is a very old settlement, dating back to the era of the Roman occupation (1st/2nd Century AD.) Built by order of D. Dinis, the main purpose of the castle of Borba was to protect the borders with Castela, thus reinforcing the treaty of Alcanices (1297) after the victory of D. Alfonso II of Portugal over the Moors in 1217.Immediately after the conquest Borba was handed over to the Military Order of Aviz. On July 15th 1302 D. Diniz granted it its first charter, constituting Borba as a municipality, liberating it from the municipality of Estremoz. Winegrowing in the region dates back to the Roman era. It was a complementary activity to the diversified agriculture of the region throughout the Middle Age. Nonetheless, at the end of the seventeenth century winegrowing became the main agricultural activity of the region having been responsible for a period of great development and wealth for the region. From this moment on wines from Borba started to stand out among other wines form the Alentejo and throughout the country thanks to their high quality. During that period high prices were paid for Borba wines. Borba’s prosperity during the seventeenth century is entirely related to wine. It even caused a significant illuminist movement, visible even today in the architecture of many manor houses. It was during this period that the treaty of Methuem allowed the tax free export of wines to England, making Portuguese wine quite more competitive than French wine, thus stimulating the production in various regions, including Borba. Halfway the nineteenth century the production of wine, up until then produced in earthen vessels, was awaken by a technological breakthrough as a result of the Industrial Revolution. Rectangular stone vessels, presses and other winery equipment appeared in certain family-owned wineries. The palaces once owned by these families still represent an important architectonic legacy of the city of Borba. At the end of the nineteenth century phylloxera destroyed a great part of the vines. Many parts of the destroyed land were cultivated with olive groves. At the beginning of the twentieth century new grape varieties were planted, using the technique of grafting. Wine production was then reborn. The Adega de Borba was founded in 1955 by a group of dynamic winegrowers.
