Wine Spectator Wine Reviews

Viña Haras de Pirque Cabernet Sauvignon Maipo Valley 2006 $12 (Wine Spectator)

This has good weight, with velvety tannins carrying crushed plum and currant notes, while hints of grilled herb and sage weave through the finish. Also contains Syrah and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2010. 5,000 cases imported.

Lioco Chardonnay Sonoma County 2007 $20 (Wine Spectator)

Smooth and creamy, with pure, ripe pear, melon and spice notes that gain body and intensity on the finish, where the flavors are long and lingering. Drink now through 2012. 6,890 cases made.

Aldo & Riccardo Seghesio Barolo Vigneto La Villa 2005 $55 (Wine Spectator)

Aromas of crushed dark fruits, dried mushroom and dried rose follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a long finish. There's wonderful length and focus. Best after 2012. 1,100 cases made.

Jacob's Creek Shiraz South Eastern Australia 2006 $8 (Wine Spectator)

Tight and grainy, with a chalky edge to the berry and dried cherry flavors. Drink now through 2012. 90,000 cases imported.

Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan White 2006 $38 (Wine Spectator)

There's lovely toasted coconut, apple pie and lemon cream character on the nose. Full-bodied, with bright, lively acidity and a long, clean, almost minerally finish. Drink now. 2,500 cases made.

Pierre André Bourgogne White Réserve 2006 $15 (Wine Spectator)

Fresh and rich, showing peach, apple and citrus flavors matched to a bright structure. Nicely balanced, this lingers a little on the finish. Drink now. 10,000 cases made.

Cline Viognier California 2007 $10 (Wine Spectator)

Tasty peach, apricot and citrus peel notes are light-bodied and refreshing, yet still balanced with focus and concentration. Drink now. 24,116 cases made.

Water Wheel Memsie White Bendigo 2007 $15 (Wine Spectator)

Ripe and spicy, with a wet hay edge to the pear, pineapple and cream flavors. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Roussanne. Drink now. 3,000 cases imported.

Les Tourelles de Longueville Pauillac 2006 $35 (Wine Spectator)

Black currant and dark chocolate aromas follow through to a full body, with chewy tannins, very good fruit and an aftertaste of tobacco and berry. Structured and rich. The excellent second wine from Pichon-Baron. Best after 2012. 8,150 cases made.

Merryvale Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley Starmont 2008 $18 (Wine Spectator)

Ripe, fleshy peach, tangerine, Asian pear and apricot flavors are up front, with great intensity, mouthwatering acidity and a nicely spicy finish. Drink now. 6,620 cases made.

By Phil Mercer
Sydney

Last year, Australian wine exports fell by almost 10 percent, the first decrease in a decade. It was a sign that after a long boom… Continue

For reasons that will become clear in a moment, it is tempting not to start a review of a new line of wines called Yellow + Blue with the fact that they are excellent values at $11 or $12 for a liter, a third more wine than in a typical bottle. Or that the three wines from Argentina and Spain c… Continue

Uncorked: Beware "score whores" in the wine world

Ratings from outlets like Wine Spectator can help, but should be taken with a grain of salt.

"98 Points WS"

"96 Points WA"

"99 Points ST"

It's hard for the average consumer to figure out what wine to buy. With tens of thousands of producers worldwide, crazy foreign labels and huge differences in vintages, how are you supposed to know what's good or what you will like?

The History of Sco… Continue
