Every Memorial Day, many in our community visit local cemeteries to pay respects to those who served in the United States Armed Forces.

This Memorial Day, weekend, the Winfield Flower Shoppe in Winfield, Il. will participate in the nationwide Memorial Day Flowers program and will distribute free roses to visitors. Each visitor will receive two roses, one to place on a headstone to honor someone who served and one to take for themselves as a remembrance.

SAF, ANLA Secure Funding for Downy Mildew Research

The New York Times is among the media that have covered the the downy mildew that’s plaguing garden impatiens.

A new research project could help the industry develop more accurate diagnostic tools and management strategies to cope with a strain of downy mildew plaguing garden impatiens – and gardeners – across much of the U.S. The project, funded at more than $385,600, is a result of coordinated efforts between SAF and the American Nursery and Landscape Association (ANLA), and is part of Farm Bill funding provided to assist specialty crop producers.

“The American Floral Endowment has been out-front in helping growers find better information, but we need much more research on this new, very difficult problem – so that this important part of our production, gardening and landscaping industry does not die,” said Lin Schmale, senior director of Government Relations at SAF. “The project will include formation of an Industry Advisory Team, with representatives from SAF, ANLA, and the industry, to ensure coordination and relevance of the ongoing research, and to ensure continued and quick industry awareness of ongoing results.”

Downy mildew is a newly emergent disease of vegetative and seed-produced Impatiens walleriana, a mainstay plant for American and European gardeners, homeowners, and landscapers – not to mention growers. With a total farmgate value of $174 million a year, Impatiens walleriana are one of the country’s top three ornamental plants. The prevalence of the disease, which has been identified along both coasts, in the Midwest, Texas and parts of Canada, has forced some industry members to stop offering the springtime favorite and has attracted attention from the media, most recently The New York Times, which chronicled the history of the disease and its current manifestation.

“We saw it (downy mildew) in 2011 in the fall, and it was really dramatic,” Margery Daughtrey, a leading ornamentals plant pathologist at the Cornell University extension center in Riverhead, N.Y., told the newspaper. “Gorgeous plants, flowering two feet tall, and then the flowers start disappearing and leaves drop and stems fall over and then the stems disappear.”

The disease, technically a mold (Plasmopara obducens), “thrives in cool, damp conditions and first appears as a white, downy coating of spores on the undersides of leaves, so it’s easy to miss,” according to the Times. “By the time gardeners notice the flowers drooping, it’s too late to do anything.”

Downy mildew has been identified in North America since the 1800s, but prior to 2004, did not have any measurable impact on U.S. production. However, the apparently new disease took growers and scientists by surprise, and as the overwintering of the fungus became prevalent in the United Kingdom, the future of impatiens production in that country became doubtful. By 2012, the disease was seen in 33 states, from coast to coast, underscoring the gravity of the situation facing U.S. growers. Daughtrey, a longtime ally of SAF, first noticed the current U.S. outbreak two years ago, when impatiens outside her local bakery looked strange.

“Lo and behold,” she said, “it was downy mildew.”

A spokesman for Home Depot told the Times the company is training its staff to identify the disease and reducing supply along the East Coast by 25 to 40 percent. (A number of growers and garden centers are offering consumers alternative plants, several of which are outlined in the Times story.)

Identifying downy mildew presents challenges to both consumers (who often blame their own mistakes for failed blooms) and the industry. The new research “will focus in part on molecular diagnostics of both new and herbarium material to develop rapid molecular diagnostic tools, which will provide the needed information for developing a long-term strategy,” Schmale said. “It will also help us better understand how the disease overwinters, and help test products that can prevent or manage it.”

In the meantime, industry members across segments should educate themselves and their customers with updated information from the websites of SAF, the American Floral Endowment, ANLA, Ball Horticultural Company, and Syngenta. Look for updates on SAF’s efforts to keep the issue at the in front of lawmakers in future issues of EBrief and Floral Management magazine.
