Gujarat: Education dept issues home learning guidelines

In Gujarat, the education department yesterday issued home learning guidelines for the students during the period of lockdown. The guidelines are for all the primary, secondary and higher secondary schools in the state. AIR correspondent reports that as per the guidelines, the admission process for class 1 to 9 will begin from June 8 this month. However, all the schools will remain closed till 30th of this month as per the guidelines by Union Home Ministry.

Schools have been asked to make necessary arrangements for the distribution of educational material for free of cost for the entitled students. This has to be done from 8th June to 13th June by following the social distancing norms. Schools will have to use various online mediums for teaching such as mobile application, television programmes.

DD Girnar channel will run the special education programme as per the schedule prepared by the state Education board as well as GCERT. The midday meal programme will be continued during the home learning period and the government will make the necessary arrangement for the distribution.

As part of the implementation of NCF-2005 and RTE-2009, the state government undertook the initiative of restructuring the standard 1 to 8 curriculum and decided to prepare a Total Learning Package (TLP) to provide experiences for the child to create his own knowledge. Under Total Learning Package (TLP), curriculum, textbook, teacher's edition, self-study book, local reference literature as well as school holistic assessment guide etc. have been prepared for primary education. Study findings prepared as a syllabus for all subjects from Std. 1 to 8 as the first step of this entire package. Dhoran-6 Ghare Shikhie Adhyayan Nishpatti June-2020 GCERT. This book has been prepared by putting together the study findings of all the subjects of standard 1 to 8, so that it can be useful to any standard and subject teacher.

In this book you can see what new things a child has to learn during the eight years of primary education and the order in which these things are to be learned is placed in a logical order. Dhoran-7 Ghare Shikhie Adhyayan Nishpatti June-2020 By GCERT. The study conclusions placed in the order of logical development in each standard, in each subject and in each field of study also help us to understand how much pre-knowledge a child should have in any one subject of any standard. If the child does not have the requisite foreknowledge then the necessary remedial action has to be taken. The teacher will also get clear guidance on how to do this remedial work, what to do, etc.

It is also intentional to give a definite order to the study findings of all the subjects from Std. 1 to 8. Dhoran-8 Ghare Shikhie Chopadi Ni Adhyayan Nishpatti June-2020. Each study outcome in each subject is represented in three digits, including the standard, the field of study and the study outcome in three consecutive terms, such as the 3.8.13 conclusion of the English subject: 'The student will be able to use the dictionary.' 3 is the field of study (practical application). The 8 shown in the middle shows the standard and the last 13 shown in the sequence of the statement. If we look at it as a whole, we will realize that the children are gradually progressing in different fields of study in different subjects under primary education. Number of programs across the country such as DPEP, SSA, NPEGEL have been implemented towards universalization of elementary education. As a result , since past one decade there has been significant improvement in the enrollement and retention of children at the primary level. However, despite sincere and dedicated efforts at various levels to improved quality in education, there is a long way to go. When one thinks of usual primary classes, the picture of any teacher centic classrooms that comes to one’s mind is as under:

1. Teacher dominates the classroom all the time, with no allowance for children to learn of develop on their own.

2. It is assumed that all children will learn the same thing at the same time and in the same manner.

3. The problems of multi-grade and multi-level nature of classroom are not addressed.

4. TLMs are rarely used by children as a normal practice.

5. Most of the materials used are not prepared for self-learning.

6. There is no opportunity for the child to learn the lessons missed during his/her absence from class.

7. Evaluation methods are mostly summative and test only the rote learning by children.

In order to address the above issues, Pragna – an activity based learning approach, has been initiated with an objective to correct and overcome these difficulties and to open the classroom to a more holistic and learner based way of working with children through the day, throughout the year.

With schools in Gujarat remaining shut due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani will be launching a “home learning” initiative at 8 am on DD Girnar on June 15, the date when government schools usually reopen after summer vacations in the state.

The telecast of educational programmes will cover students between classes three and 12, stated an official release. Apart from this, similar programmes will be run by the Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG) on the Vande Gujarat channel.

In March, just before the lockdown was first announced, the state education department had roped in around nine private channels and Doordarshan to beam classes into homes for all government schools, under the Study From Home (SFW) initiative. Nearly 66 per cent students from government schools were covered by the SFW.

Under the initiative which will mark the beginning of formal schooling in Gujarat this year, arrangements have also been made to provide printed worksheets to students of classes one-eight who do not have mobiles or televisions, the release added. Apart from this, teachers are also distributing books to children at their homes, said the statement from the government.

Under this programme, respective teachers will be calling up children on their mobiles and providing necessary instructions and guidance.
