In October of 2002 It became evident to a number of geocachers that there was a need for a logo that depicted geocaching in general as opposed to representing a person or group overseeing or profiting from geocaching. This new logo would be public domain so anyone could use it as-is or alter is any way they desired.
After many very creative designs were submitted, it became apparent two designs were admired by the majority. The most popular one was created by Leatherman, often called the “GX”, which is a simple design that can be written in the field and is easily recognized. Following very closely is the detailed logo designed by Gustaf, which could be used to make some nice coins or other fancy trademark items. Visit this website for artwork you can use.

This is the real road where the were the West and Kimbrill Clan (whose membership briefly included Frank and Jesse James) would rob and kill people as they drove through Winn parish.

Access from the road to the north not the south. Look for a old cem rd that heads into the woods going south. Road is not passable in a car due to mud holes.

The cache is located near the old abandoned cemetery used by travlers of the time.

Sunk into a old stump hole and filled in so only the top is exposed just unscrew the top do not remove. Please recover with straw.

PINEVILLE ”New recreation fees will go into effect January 1, 2008 at some Kisatchie National Forest sites. All new fees will be clearly posted at the sites on the information board. “The funds collected from fees will be used to maintain and enhance recreation sites and trails, said Forest Supervisor, Gretta Boley. “The Forest Service has interviewed many trail riders and campers. The majority of people interviewed are in agreement with increasing fees, if the money is used for operation, maintenance and construction of the new amenities,” Ms. Boley continued. Some Kisatchie trails remain free. However on trails where there is a charge anyone riding an OHV, bicycle or horse will be charged the same fee. Additional information, maps and discount permits can be obtained at all Kisatchie National Forest offices. For more information please call 318-473-7160 during regular business hours, call 1-866-830-6467 after hours, or refer to the KNF website at: www.kisatchie.us for updated information.

The NFS is putting together another ride for utvs on November 15th on the Sandstone trail at Red Dirt. Everyone is invited. We will meet at 10 am at the Lotus Camp Trailhead. Bring you drinks and lunch…

Several Caches are in the area.

Be sure and mark your calender. We have a unique chance here to get some trails designated or open to utvs. Hopefully we can get a group of at least three “lay” people to rub elbows with the forestry people.

The date for this ride has been changed from the 15th to the 28th and now the 29th. Still for 10 am at the Lotus camp. I’m hoping the weather will permit this to happen. I don’t want to lose any momentum we have on this. It sure would be great if the trail could be reopened in the spring for our rhinos…Ms Jackie and Jim are working hard for us on this. They just have to convince some nay sayers.

Grant Parish sheriff’s officials said wreckage from two separate fatal plane crashes were expected to be cleared Tuesday.

There was no new information in the investigations of what happened in the crashes, sheriff’s Chief Deputy Preston Mosley said.

On Sunday, a Piper airplane went down about 4 p.m. off of Fairfield Road near Dry Prong. There were five people on the plane, including the pilot, Jon Norman of Alexandria. Chad DeRamus was killed in the crash.
The plane was coming back from Branson, Mo., when Norman reported the “engine locked.” He landed in a pasture but was unable to stop the plane before it hit some trees. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration is probing a second crash west of Georgetown that claimed the life of Dr. Sleiman Salibi of Lake Charles. The vintage T-28 single-engine trainer was trying to make it to Alexandria International Airport after the pilot reported being low on fuel, authorities said.

The wreckage was found Sunday evening by civil air patrol and Louisiana National Guard helicopters. Fort Polk also assisted in the search.

I watched this search, plans flew back and forth in grids for 2 days over me and the crash but could not find it. Finaly the state police found it with a helicopter.

Old us165 used to run through the town but was moved and new bridges were built. You can see the old mill ponds when driving north of Georgetown and the old US 165 abandonded bridges. You used to be able to drive down the old us 165 but the roads are now blocked and you can only walk down them.
Called the Mosley Hill Lookout tower on the maps locals just called it the Fire Tower. It was built in 1941 and closed sometime around 1970. It is located at the highest point in the area and is 110′ tall with a 13’x13’ cab and a catwalk at the top. I understand this is the only tower left this large.
It is said to be moved to Gum Springs. And that may be why they just cleared away the large trees from it. The new 4 lane road will soon go through this area.

My grandfather wired this tower. Story is that being upset about heights (I can see why) he refused to run the pipe up the legs and ran it from landing to landing up the center. Don’t have any photos of that wish I did. I think they paid him to disconnect wiring in the 70s when everything was removed.

We often climbed this tower after it was no longer in use. It had a locked trap door at the top so you could not get to the catwalk. But sometime in the 80s the gov took a welding torch to the bottom ladder and pulled it off. The trap door must be open now because you can see through the opening from the ground. The cab had a wooden floor and is falling away.
I understand you can almost see winnfield from the catwalk however being as old as it is now I would never climb to the top even tho it is no longer locked.
This is an historic landmark for the area. Back in the 60s a woman climbed the tower every day to watch for fires. Everytime we started a trash fire she would call to check on what was burining.

Coordinates: N31.6906 W92.5703

Also see firelookout.net They claim it was used until 1981 but that is incorrect 1981 must be whenthey cut off the bottom stairway because I know the lights were cut off in 1970.

The orginals were taken down in the 60s. This area was used for motocross and ATV riding in the 80s and is still used for hunting.

I had been thinking about this for a while and after looking at maps decided that the area right next to the road would not be in the Off Limits area but before I could place a cache someone else did.

Located about 1,800 ft from highway down a rock road. Turnaround in the road is about 1,800 ft further in. I drive down this road in my truck but you should decide for yourself if you can drive in. If you can not get all the way to the turn around you may have to back up to get out. Take care not to drive off the road. If you are in a car you most likely will want to park on the first hill and walk in.

Cache is covered with pine straw and leaves. Be sure to recover since hunters will be in this area.

Located on the Natchez Trace as it crossed at Packton.

Somewhere deeper in the woods is a old slave graveyard. On the other side of the US167 is a Natchez Trace cemetery where people passing through on the wagon trains were burried when they fell sick and died.
