For the original Schwarzbier experience, try and get your hands on a bottle of Köstritzer Schwarzbier from the spa town of Bad Köstritz in the Thüringen region of Germany.

Having opened their brewery in 1543, the brewmeisters of the town encouraged visitors to drink their black lager, claiming it would make them stronger and healthier.

More recently, in 1991, the original Köstritz Brewery joined the Bitburger Brewery Group and reintroduced the original Köstritzer Schwarzbier back in 1993. If you only ever try one historical style of this complex beer this should be the go-to Schwarzbier, and preferably in Germany.

One of my favorite US-brewed Schwarzbiers comes from the Jack’s Abby brewery in Massachusetts and is known as Smoke & Dagger. Although it pours like an opaque stout American beer, it has the taste of a delicately smoked lager.

For a traditional Dunkel lager from Germany, Ayinger’s Altbairisch is considered one of the original Dunkels and a benchmark for the style. (it’s also widely available here in the US -bonus!) This outstanding dark lager (not black though!) embodies the toasty bread qualities and smooth mouthfeel of a Munich Dunkel very well.

Here in the US, Prost Brewing of Denver, Colorado brews a year-round Dunkel which offers the deep rich roasted chocolate and nutty flavors you would expect from the darker imported Munich grain.

With just a moderate bitterness to balance out the sweetness, it’s the ideal beer for drinking on a summer evening in one of Prost Brewing’s amazing biergarten locations around Colorado.

The origins of the beer growler can be traced back to the late 19th Century when patrons of local bars would use vessels such as tin pails, a pitcher, and glass bars or jugs to carry beer home with them. The most common beer vessel used was a 2-quart galvanized bucket or enameled pail with a loose-fitting lid.

It’s thought these metal buckets got their name “growlers” from the growling-like sound made by the carbon dioxide escaping from the lid as the beer sloshed around inside the pail. Other sources argue the growling refers to the sound made by patrons as the bartender filled their two-quart pail if they felt they were not getting the full measure!

Prior to Prohibition, women and children would often bring these covered buckets of beer from the local brewery or pub to factory workers at lunchtime or home for the evening meal. This practice became known as “rushing the growler” with the growler name already stuck for the containers. Adults who often made a living carrying the buckets would be called “bucket boys” or in Milwaukee “Kesseljunges”, a German term used by the local German immigrants.

In the years leading up to Prohibition the “bucket trade” would often be attacked by the anti-alcohol “temperance” movement, which resulted in the 18th Amendment (the total prohibition of all alcohol). Laws were passed in many states which regulated or completely banned the bucket trade and the use of growlers. Many of these laws were only repealed or relaxed in the last 20 years or so. For example, in North Carolina, only breweries were allowed to fill a growler, with bars and retail stores only being allowed to refill the growler since 2013.

By the 1950s, the tin pails used as growlers had virtually been phased out, and instead bars and breweries would use waxed cardboard containers with lids that would look like a cross between a milk jug and a Chinese takeaway soup container. In the 1960s, most bars would switch to plastic and were allowed to sell pre-packaged beers after hours, so the idea of a beer growler slowly disappeared.

It was only with the advent of the craft beer scene in the US that growlers made a comeback. Many small microbreweries such as Otto Brother’s Brewery in Wyoming couldn’t afford the beer bottling equipment and machinery to bottle their delicious beers.

Charlie Otto is often credited with the revival of the growler as his father remembered the use of the growlers in his younger days. However, Charlie felt the packaging needed updating so Charlie began silk-screening the Brewery logo on half-gallon glass jugs, and the growler as we know it today was born.

The Benefits of a Growler

It’s very rare nowadays to visit a tap room that doesn’t have a stock of growlers behind the bar. The growler offers the ultimate way to take a larger amount of your favorite draft beer home with you without having to buy a keg or a mini keg.

Traditionally a standard 64-ounce growler holds just over 5 standard 12 oz servings. The growler sizes offered by some microbreweries include 128 oz growlers, but these are much less portable and often contain too much beer to consume in one session without the beer spoiling. If you’re having a larger social gathering of craft beer lovers, why not see if your local craft brewery can supply a keg or at least a restaurant-size mini-keg?

I know that if I’m having a backyard cookout in the summer months I often pick up several growlers of different types of beer to cater to the tastes of my beer-drinking buddies. A standard-size glass growler is also the perfect size to fit in the refrigerator to keep the beer cold. Any larger and it would struggle to fit in most domestic refrigerators.

The beer growler offers many benefits including:

• Easier transportation of beer. You can take growlers almost anywhere with you, from that weekly fishing trip, a hunting weekend, a day out with a picnic, or even on short camping trips. Most are not too heavy, and a convenient handle on the side or top of the growler makes them easy to carry – certainly much easier than transferring six-pack cans of beer in and out of your bag. Their size means you could even pack several normal growlers in the trunk with the air-tight caps keeping your beer fresh for days.
• Bringing craft beer home from your favorite brewery. Maybe your local craft beer bar hasn’t got around to bottling or canning your favorite draught beer or the newer special releases yet, in which case a growler allows you to take some home with you. Always check if your local brewery reuses growlers before buying one of your own generic growlers. Due to sanitation issues, some craft breweries won’t fill growlers brought in from outside.
• Sharing your homebrew with buddies. Bottling a growler with your latest homebrew creation is the perfect way of sharing with friends, family, and other beer enthusiasts, wherever they may be.
• Allows for tapping a new keg. If you are hosting a party and you feel the keg is getting empty, growlers are the perfect way of running off the remaining beer into a container that will keep it fresh so that you can tap the next keg for an uninterrupted flow of beer. I remember that we used to try and quickly drink the remaining beer in a keg to make way for a new one, which is okay if there are only one or two pints left, but drink 64 fluid ounces or more of beer too quickly and you won’t be tapping too many more kegs that night!
• Advanced protection for your beer. More recently, some growler manufacturers have started producing double-walled stainless steel growlers which provide extra insulation for keeping your beer cooler and improving the beer’s durability over an extended period.
• Easy to maintain. Growlers can be very easy to clean – normally it’s enough to rinse with warm soapy water once they are empty and then sterilize with some of your leftover beer sterilizer fluid. Some of the newer growlers are even dishwasher friendly for the ultimate convenience, but you should always let a growler air dry rather than adding the risk of contamination from a tea towel or other drying cloth.
• More environmentally friendly. Rather than throwing away regular beer cans or bottles after you have drunk your beer, the growler is reusable and the most sustainable option.

Different Types of Growlers

Growlers come in many different shapes and colors and most importantly are made from different materials. Glass is perhaps the most common and traditional of the newly born growler, but you will also find them in stainless steel, ceramics, and even rigid plastic.

Glass Growlers

Glass is definitely the most traditional material for a growler and can be made of either smooth or ribbed glass. Normally they will be made of clear or brown glass.

Although a transparent glass growler of beer allows you to see the beer inside, it offers no protection to the beer from sun exposure and the beer can develop those skunky “sun-struck” flavors and aromas we try to avoid. But on the other hand, darker glass will absorb the heat of the sunlight quicker, which you definitely don’t want with lagers that become warm too fast. Consider what type of beer you are going to put in the growler before choosing a color.

The main downside of a glass growler is its fragile nature. A glass growler can quickly shatter or crack while handling them. Another possible problem is with bacterial growth, especially when filling from the tap or when the bottle cap is damaged or bent. Due to the shape of most glass growlers, as oxygen enters the container and carbon dioxide exits, the beer will spoil in a shorter time after taking your first pour.

Ceramic Growlers

You may have a problem finding this type of growler, although if you do find one they make the perfect gift for the beer lover in your life. They are the most attractive but also the most expensive type of growler on the market. They can be more difficult to clean and also too heavy to carry around as easily. Unfortunately, just like a glass container, a ceramic growler will break easily if dropped by accident and unlike glass, you can’t see inside to determine how much beer is left.

However, the ceramic growler is a thing of beauty and one deserving of the most special beers.

Stainless Steel Growlers

The trendiest type of growler you will often see nowadays is the stainless steel growler sported by many of the adventure outdoorsy types. It’s a more durable growler you can carry around without fear of it breaking if you should accidentally drop it. The stainless steel also insulates the beer and keeps it colder than other materials, and the opacity of the growler offers the ultimate protection of the beer from light. On the downside, it also means you can’t see how much amber nectar you have left to drink.

Plastic Pet Growlers

Looking like an oversized soda bottle from 7/11, this sturdy growler is an ideal option for beer for carry-outs as it’s cheap, durable, and lightweight. Normally using brown plastic, they will also offer protection from UV light to the beer and extend the shelf life.

Unfortunately, they may not be as durable as glass containers and can wear out much quicker, cleaning too vigorously can often leave micro-abrasions in the plastic where beer-spoiling bacteria can live, and a beer aficionado would argue plastic bottles give the beer a plastic-like chemical taste over an extended period. They may be okay for filling with a domestic lager, but if you have an awesome beer then you’ll want an awesome beer container to keep it in!

What is a Howler?

So far, I have only discussed beer growlers and the different sizes of growlers available. But what exactly is this similar phrase you may have heard about – the howler?

Basically, a howler is a baby growler coming in with a capacity of just 32 fluid ounces compared to the 64 fluid ounces of a standard growler. It contains the equivalent amount of just under 3 standard 12oz beer bottles and is much lighter and more portable than a growler.

The name howler originates from the mix of half and growler. Howlers are compact, lightweight, and easy to carry, making them perfect for outdoor activities or when you want to enjoy a beer on the go.

They came in generally the same materials as a full grown-up growler, although plastic howlers are more common due to the lower cost involved. As a smaller container, they can be much cheaper to fill with beer and hold just enough beer for your average craft beer drinker to take home at the end of the night.

Some breweries may not offer all their beers in howler sizes, preferring instead to sell a few cans or bottles of other beers, so your choice may be limited compared to the average craft beer growler.

How Long Does Beer Stay Fresh in a Howler or Growler?

Once you open your growler, your beer will start to lose its carbonation. On the first day of opening the beer will remain fresh, but it can go flat quite quickly. Even if you recap the beer, for a standard growler you should aim to drink the beer in 24 – 48 hours.

There are several other factors that can affect how long you should keep beer in your growler, including the type of beer, the filling process, the type of growler, whether the growler is pressurized or not, along with factors such as the storage of the growler – I have taken a more though in-depth look at in my post “How Long Does a Growler Last Unopened?”

The Crowler – The Evolution of a Beer Growler

A more recent development in take-home beer containers is the innovation of the crowler developed by Oskar Blues Brewing, a leading exponent of canning in craft beers.

Developed in 2013 by Oskar Blues in partnership with the Ball Corporation, they developed the first system for canning and sealing a 32 oz beer behind the bar, just like filling a growler. Basically, a crowler is a 32 oz howler holding 2 pints of beer, but in an aluminum can similar to the prepackaged beers you find on the shelves of your local grocery store and supermarkets.

After its initial early success, Oskar Blues made the technology available for purchase by other brewpubs and microbreweries, and there are now several manufacturers of this canning-plant-in-a-box machinery, allowing Dixie Canner Co and October, in addition to Oskar Blues, to offer a variety of crowler machines for sale.

You will quite often see Crowlers at many of the larger beer festivals giving festival goers a way of taking home more beer.

When it is compared to a traditional glass growler, the crowler offers several distinct advantages.

• An airtight seal from the lid of the can being crimped on filling means there are no issues with cap leakage or oxygen permeating the beer.
• No sunlight can penetrate the crowler and risk altering the flavor of the beer, as often happens with glass vessels.
• Crowlers are stocked by the bar, there’s no need to be carrying empty growlers in your car trunk.
• No glass to worry about breaking if you should accidentally drop the crowler.
• The most amazing can of shotgun beer ever!

Crowlers keep your beer fresher for longer periods, which appeals to both craft beer drinkers and brewers alike. They are also much more portable and easier to ship than similar glass containers.

However, crowlers are not reusable – once they’re empty you simply throw them away. A crowler is recyclable though, so it can be more sustainable than many of the disposable traditional beer cans. Also, there is no way of resealing a crowler once it’s opened, so all the beer should be consumed in one serving to enjoy it at its best.

Howler vs Growler – Final call

Hopefully, you now have a clearer understanding of what a howler is compared to a growler. They are both reusable containers that can be used for carrying home your favorite beer from the bar or brewery to enjoy at home or on your next trip out, be it a picnic, a fishing day, or a camping trip.

The only difference between a howler and a growler is the size. Think of the howler with its 32 oz capacity as a baby growler, with the growler holding double at 64 oz of beer or sometimes even 4 times as much with the rarer 128 oz growlers.

I personally prefer the size of a growler – after all, more beer is always better. However, if you are wanting to share some of your homebrew with friends then personalized howlers can be a much more unique and personal touch than just using 3 generic beer bottles!

Whichever you choose, remember a growler or howler will only keep the beer fresh for a limited period, and once opened, it’s best to consume the beer within a day or two at max. Unless, of course, you are lucky enough to have been treated to, or even treated yourself to, a pressurized growler/minikeg like the uKeg.

If you want a beer that will keep for longer periods of time, then see if your bar offers a crowler – basically an oversized aluminum can of beer. Again, this will need to be drunk quickly once opened as you can’t reseal the can, but to be honest, that’s not really a problem when it’s filled with my favorite IPA!

Let’s take a quick look at the history of this once flagship beer of the Miller Brewing Company and find out how it got relegated to being one of the USA’s budget-friendly beer options. Was it just Frederick Miller’s ambition of providing quality beer for the masses which kept this delicious beer at such an inexpensive price, or have other factors such as the rise of the light beer market played a part too?

Miller High Life: The Early Days

Miller High Life is one of the oldest beers in America still produced today and was first introduced in 1903 (it’s not the oldest beer in the USA today, that honor goes to Yuengling Traditional Lager). However, it wasn’t the first beer produced by the Miller Brewery, the company which had been established by Frederick Miller in Milwaukee around 1854.

High Life wasn’t introduced as a cheap beer though, rather it was marketed as a “Gentleman’s” beer of choice. At the beginning of the 20th Century, and especially prior to 1903, it was not too common for beers to be served in bottles in the bars of the time. Rather, beer lovers would consume beer on draught and would often turn up at the breweries with their own metal pails if they wanted to take some beer to enjoy at home.

Miller High Life was launched around New Year’s Eve 1903 and came in a distinctive clear bottle with a tapered neck similar to those in which Champagne was traditionally served. Furthermore, the bottles would often come topped with a gold foil (and occasionally still do for special commemorative editions) similar to a Champagne stopper. The bottles would also be served in Champagne buckets of ice in the bar to be kept chilled.

Others would argue it was the clear golden color of the beer and its effervescent nature which earned High Life the name “The Champagne of Beers”.

Whatever the reason, Miller High Life quickly established itself as a premium lager and certainly not a low-quality beer. For the last 120 years, Miller Brewing Co, or whoever their owners at the time were, has been using the “Champagne of Bottled Beer” slogan to market this popular beer (the “bottled beer” part of the moniker was dropped in 1969 and it became just the “Champagne of Beers”).

Is Miller High Life a “Champagne-Style Beer”?

No, certainly not. The brewing process for Miller High Life is the same as all other Miller beers and, in general, macro lagers of the US. High Life uses the same 5 basic ingredients found in many other adjunct lagers of the US including water, barley, hops, yeast, and corn syrup or maltose.

Miller High Life still uses the same strain of Miller yeast that Frederick Miller was carrying when he arrived in America in 1850, and, yes, High Life does use hops. In fact, the Galena hops used in High Life were specially bred to be light-stable hops by Miller brewers in the 1930s to avoid the skunky aroma often associated with beer in clear glass bottles.

High Life is definitely a beer and a pretty damn good one at that. Miller High Life is often said to be the bartender’s favorite beer (and they should know a thing or two about beers), and when asked to name their favorite macro lager of the US, many craft brewers often say Miller High Life (for example – Kyle Vetter, founder of the 1840 Brewing Company, also in Milwaukee, or Eric Tennant, head Brewer at Benchtop Brewing Company, Norfolk, VA.).

High Life has no characteristics of Champagne at all, it’s fermented as beer using a proprietary bottom-fermenting yeast compared to Champagne which uses a specialized Champagne yeast. With an ABV of just 4.6%, it has just over a third of the alcoholic content of Champagne.

Although a Premium beer, High Life certainly has no grapes in it, and High Life is not produced in the Champagne region of France, where officially a beverage must be produced to be called Champagne under strict European appellation de origin rules.

Instead, the Champagne nickname has been used very effectively over the years as a marketing tool that positioned what is really a “working-class beer” in the premium end of the beer market.

It’s not been without its troubles though. As recently as February 2023 European bureaucrats ordered the destruction of over 2,500 cans of Miller High Life at the request of the French Champagne committee, who disapproved of the use of the slogan “Champagne of Beers”.

In what seemed like a crazy move, US consumers took to social media to vent their outrage and confusion. One tweeter even commented “If the Champagne Industrial Complex is worried that they will be confused with Miller High Life – the “Champagne of beers” – they clearly haven’t tried one.”. They say “No publicity is bad publicity”, and the amount of PR High Life gained from such media coverage certainly helps keep the cost of marketing down.

When Did Miller High Life Become a Cheap Beer?

Although High Life was originally marketed as a premium beer with a somewhat premium price, the “gentleman’s beer of choice”, today Miller High Life is seen as an economy brand.

During World War II and the period shortly after, when beer ingredients such as barley malts were limited, the Miller Brewing Co turned all their production to only brewing Miller High Life, which further cemented its position as a popular middle-class or working-class beer. Frederick Miller was keen to emphasize that quality beer should be available to all, even though Miller High Life was never the cheapest beer on the market.

When the Philip Morris Company acquired Miller in 1969, Miller High Life was still seen as a premium beer and was the flagship beer of the Miller Empire. They even launched a successful advertising campaign reminding passionate beer connoisseurs that it was “Miller Time”.

That was all to change in the late 1970s with the rise of the light beer market, kickstarted ironically by another Miller brand, Miller Lite. Along with the rise of light beers and the growing emergence of other national conglomerates like Budweiser and Coors, Miller High Life was soon relegated to the bargain bins of the 7/11s and other large retailers.

The Repositioning of Miller High Life

Unable to ignore the changes in the American beer market and the growth in popularity of craft beers too, Miller had to change the dynamics of their Miller High Life marketing for the beer to maintain its presence in the American beer market.

The beer itself hadn’t changed, it still used the same quality ingredients, the original Miller yeast, and the same brewing process, but it was no longer the number one selling beer. High Life wasn’t even the number one selling beer in the Miller portfolio of beers, as it trailed behind other popular beers such as Miller Lite and Miller Genuine Draft.

Miller High Life’s marketing strategy is a key component of its success in maintaining a low price point while still appealing to a wide consumer base. The brand has adopted several effective marketing tactics to maximize its reach and generate strong brand recognition.

Miller High Life positions itself as the beer for the everyday working person, often using slogans such as “The Champagne of Beers” and “A True American Classic.” This positioning appeals to consumers looking for an affordable option that still offers a satisfying drinking experience. By associating the brand with quality and value, Miller High Life establishes a unique identity in the market, setting itself apart from both premium and budget beer brands.

Miller High Life employs targeted advertising to reach its desired consumer demographic. The brand focuses on advertising channels that resonate with its target audience, including television, radio, online platforms, and social media.

Is Miller High Life Cheaper to Produce?

To maintain the cheap cost of a quality beer, sometimes you have to question just how can they make a beer so cheap. With the rising costs of ingredients and the inflation crisis of recent years, it’s often cheaper to buy the cheapest beers on your local 7/11 shelf than to homebrew a quality beer at home (well, almost!).

The answer lies in the scale of production of a beer such as Miller High Life and the cost-effective ingredients used by the brewing company.

As part of the Molson Coors Empire, the sheer scale on which Miller Brewing now operates allows for Miller High Life to leverage economies of scale as a significant factor in its affordability. Economies of scale refer to the cost advantages that arise from increased production volume.

With a vast production scale, Miller High Life benefits from the ability to make bulk purchases of raw materials, such as grains, hops, and yeast. By purchasing these ingredients in large quantities, the brand can negotiate better prices with suppliers, taking advantage of discounts and favorable terms.

Large-scale production enables Miller High Life to streamline its brewing processes, optimizing efficiency and reducing costs. The company invests in modern brewing technology and equipment that can handle high production volumes while maintaining quality standards. Automated systems and standardized procedures minimize waste, increase production speed, and enhance overall efficiency. Miller High Life’s extensive distribution network is another aspect of economies of scale that contributes to its affordability. Does Miller High Life Use Cheaper Ingredients?

Miller Brewing prefers the term “cost-effective” ingredients, which help maintain the lower price of Miller High Life. Why Is Miller High Life So Cheap? – Final Call

Miller High Life is one of my favorites, if not my absolute favorite, of the lower-cost macro lagers of America. I, like many others, would much rather take a Miller High Life than a Budweiser or Bud Light when offered the option.

When you buy a Miller High Life it’s almost like you are getting that “Champagne” experience at a bargain basement price (yes, I know it’s not Champagne, the Belgians showed us that!). Maybe it’s the clever marketing of the “Champagne of Beer”, “It’s Miller Time” or even the iconic “Girl in the Moon”, but drinking High Life feels much classier than many other domestic mass-produced beers, and with the bonus of a cheap price too.

To show off the stunning pale golden character of the beer, the Modelo brewery was to package this “Especial” beer in its now distinctive shaped clear bottle, which was then sealed with a gold label. To this day, it can be bought in the brand’s iconic bottles, although it’s also available in cans.

In the same year that Modelo Negra was brewed, a Vienna-style lager was first brewed by  Austrian immigrants to Mexico under the often-forgotten rule of the Austrian-born Emperor of Mexico, Maximilian I.

Although his reign in Mexico was very short, Maximilian did bring with him a taste for German and Austrian-style beers which were to influence the growing industry of Mexican brewing.

Cerveza Negra Modelo was first introduced as a draft beer in 1926. In more recent times, Modelo Negra comes in an unusually shaped, wide brown bottle with a trademark gold label.

Modelo Especial is a refreshing light lager, almost a pilsner (not quite as hoppy, though), which has a little more malty taste than most of the other light lagers of Mexico.

Its brother beer, although actually a younger beer, is much more grown up. With the robust and full-bodied flavors, this dark lager has a much more complex flavor profile suited for the more discerning beer drinker.

They are both great beers, two of the best beers that we import from Mexico, and that’s the other good thing- they are still only produced in Mexico (well, at least here in the States).

Which beer you prefer is purely a matter of personal preference. If you like a light lager such as Bud Light, Coors Light, or even full-fat Miller High Life, then you will just love the taste of Modelo Especial – it’s certainly a lot more special than Corona. It also makes a great Michelada if you have never tried beer with tomato juice.

For the more full-bodied beer lover,  Modelo Negra is the only way to go. As a dark lager, it has moderate bitterness compared to the usual Dunker-style lagers, but a caramel malty sweetness gives the beer more balance.

Only the finest quality European barley is selected for the crucial malting process. The barley grains are malted in France and Germany before being shipped in gunny bags to the respective breweries around the world.
• Hops – Heineken use hops from Germany, the Czech Republic, and the US, with the flower clusters containing lupulin, the real bittering agent of Heineken. • Yeast – Did you know every Budweiser brewed today uses a Signature Anheuser-Busch yeast which is well over 100 years old? The yeast is kept cryogenically frozen in liquid nitrogen at the main Budweiser brewery in St Louis and extracted for use 1 milliliter at a time. Once the yeast is thawed, it is grown into 100 barrels of fresh yeast before being kegged, packed with ice, and shipped to Anheuser Busch breweries around the globe.

• Water – Anheuser Busch realizes that using the purest quality water is one of the most important essential ingredients of brewing high-quality beer, and all the water used in Budweiser is purified with the use of a multi-stage filtration process to ensure the beer quality remains consistent.
• Rice 30% of the grain bill uses the addition of rice which gives the crisp quality to Budweiser and imparts the characteristic taste Bud is known for. The color of the lager also becomes lighter while the feel is drier but with a sweet aroma.

Budweiser uses a special brewing process known as beechwood aging. Anheuser Busch’s famous beechwood aging process is designed to increase the contact area of the yeast and the beer rather than impart a woody flavor to the beer, and therefore shorten the fermentation time. With its rich and frothy appearance, root beer has captured the hearts and taste buds of many carbonated beverage enthusiasts over the years. Its distinct flavor profile and nostalgic charm have made it a beloved classic in the realm of soft drinks.

In recent years, root beer has grown in popularity across North America. Many of the tap rooms of craft breweries carry root beer as a non-alcoholic alternative for some of its younger customers, i.e., the kids of beer lovers on a Summer afternoon, and a growing number of craft brewers have even started brewing their own non-alcoholic root beers.

Not wishing to miss out, some of the major brewers of the US have also started brewing their own variants of alcoholic or hard root beers, including offerings from companies such as AB-InBev and Molson Coors.

Recent reports by leading marketing analysts Grand View Research, Inc even suggest the global root beer market is set to reach $1.09 billion by 2030, showing an annual growth rate of 4.6%.

But what does root beer taste like? Do you remember the flavor of root beer from being a kid? I have many fond memories of the root beer float, an after-dinner treat on Sunday drive-bys of the A & W roadside diners, or even the McDonald’s root beer they all used to serve. But then root beer seemed to just disappear from my life as I discovered regular beers.

Let’s take a look at the history of root beer and refamiliarize ourselves with the unique flavor of this delicious All-American beverage. Is modern-day root beer still as good or even better than we remember?

The Origins and Ingredients of Root Beer

Root beer’s story dates back to the early 19th century in North America, when it emerged as a medicinal beverage.

Root beer is thought to derive from the “small beers,” beverages both non-alcoholic and alcoholic, made with herbs, berries, and bark.

It’s thought that when the early American colonists arrived, they began to make small beers using whatever ingredients they could find due to not having any barley to make traditional brews. Small beers were considered safer to drink than the water of the time, as boiling the water and ingredients would kill any harmful germs.

The earliest iterations of root beer were often homemade concoctions crafted with a variety of herbs, roots, and barks. These ingredients were believed to possess medicinal properties and were used to treat various ailments. Sassafras root bark, in particular, played a significant role in the original recipes, imparting a distinct flavor to the brew.

A closer root beer recipe to what we now call root beer became popular in the 1870s when pharmacist Charles Elmer Hires developed a miracle cure-all beverage which he initially sold as a syrup containing various medicinal herbs. Resembling a cough medicine, the syrup tasted sweet but not bitter, similar to many modern-day cough syrups.

Soon Hires turned his cure-all syrup into two different forms. The first of which was a dry powder sachet which required the drug to be brewed similarly to how you brew a pot or cup of tea. Hence the name “root tea” was born.

But Charles Elmer Hires was a canny businessman too and knew the term “root tea” was never going appeal to many of his more working-class customers, especially the local coal miners of Pennsylvania.

Hires’ first commercial version of root beer using his famous root beer extract was bottled in 1886 and, by 1893, was widely distributed across the United States.

The key ingredient of Hires’ Root Beer was the root bark of the sassafras tree, although not all traditional root beers were sassafras based. One of Hires’ earliest competitors, Barq’s, sold a sarsaparilla plant-based root beer simply called Barq’s Root Beer.

In 1919, perhaps the best known of all the original root beers, A & W Root Beer, was born when Roy Allen opened a root beer stand in Loid, California. This would lead to the development of the root beer brand and a chain of stands/diners. One of Allen’s early innovations was serving his homemade root beer drinks in cold, frosted mugs.

Sassafras and Root Beer

However, in the 1960s, the FDA banned the use of sassafras root bark in food and beverages due to concerns regarding its primary component, safrole, which was found to be potentially carcinogenic and cause cancer in rats.

Sending gifts to friends and loved ones is a common practice, especially during special occasions or holidays. Among the many gift ideas, alcoholic beverages, such as beer, often come to mind.

However, when it comes to shipments of alcohol, there are several legal and logistical considerations to take into account. In this guide, we will explore the rules and regulations surrounding mailing beer to a friend, providing you with the necessary information to ensure safe and legal delivery.

Top 10 Hints for Mailing Beer to a Friend

The TTB oversees the production, distribution, and taxation of alcohol, while the USPS alcohol regulations determine what can be shipped through their mail system.

Under federal law, it is generally illegal to use USPS to ship alcohol unless you hold a proper license. USPS regulations state that only licensed entities, such as manufacturers, licensed shippers, and authorized agents, can use their services for shipping alcohol. This means that individuals cannot use the USPS shipping process to mail beer or any other alcoholic products.

Private shipping carriers, such as FedEx and UPS, also have their own rules and restrictions when it comes to shipping alcohol. While some carriers do allow alcohol shipments, they often require the shipper to have the necessary permits and comply with specific packaging and shipping label requirements.

Basically, if you choose a private shipping agent like UPS or FedEx to ship alcohol, you may only be breaking company rules. Although I have never known anybody charged with committing a felony by the USPS for mailing beer, is it a risk you really want to take?

The USPS may be the cheaper option when compared with a private courier company and it has a larger distribution network across all 51 states, but there’s less chance of the beer getting there and more chance of you getting caught!

If you use a private shipping company like FedEx or UPS, the worst that will happen is your beer may not arrive at its final destination and you may get a stern ticking off from the company. With the USPS you may receive a visit from a federal agent and in the worst-case scenario be charged with a felony.

State Regulations on Shipping Beer

In addition to federal regulations, each state within the United States has its own specific beer shipping laws and regulations regarding shipping and receiving alcohol by mail.

These laws can vary widely, and it is essential to research and understand the specific regulations of both the origin and destination states before attempting to mail beer.

Some states allow direct-to-consumer shipments of beer, while others have restrictions or outright prohibitions. Some states may require the shipper to obtain a permit or license, while others may limit the amount of alcohol that can be shipped. Certain states also impose taxes or reporting requirements on alcohol shipments.

Current State Regulations (2023)

Mailing a bottle of your favorite craft beer to a friend is actually legal in most states, but not all. It’s important you know the address where you will be sending the beer before a shipping company will accept the order.

The legality can vary by city, county, or state. There are however three basic rules which apply everywhere beer is allowed to be shipped if you want to stay within the law.

1. You must declare to the carrier that a shipment contains alcohol, normally by putting a label on the outside of the package.
2. You must pay an alcohol package fee.
3. An adult signature has to be given when the package is received to ensure alcohol isn’t getting delivered to minors.

Shipping beer in-state is the easiest option as you will only need to know the local rules. Most in-state carriers will be fully aware and compliant with the special rules.

When you start shipping beer across state lines things get significantly more complex. Maybe you tried a craft beer in California and you ask a buddy to ship some to your home state. Or perhaps your buddy in upstate Washington would like to try some of your latest homebrewed beer. You’ll need to meet the regulations in both states although in general, transit through another state is acceptable as long as nobody physically opens the package in transit.

If it’s a case of sending a commercially produced beer as a gift, it’s often easier to check if any retailer or beer shippers in the state of the receiver stock that particular beer and can ship in-state.

Shipping Beer Internationally

This is where things get very complicated.

Often, beer competitions will have a category for imported craft beers, or perhaps on your last trip to Europe you found some exquisite Belgian beers which no wine merchant seems to import at the moment.

If ordering direct from a trading partner, somebody at their end may be aware of the shipping options and licensing requirements, but you should always check the delivery of alcohol rules in your state as well.

Each country has its own customs regulations governing the importation of alcohol. Attempting to ship beer internationally without complying with these regulations can lead to confiscation, fines, or legal consequences.

When shipping beer internationally, it is essential to research and understand the customs regulations of both the country of origin and the destination country. Some countries may have strict limitations on the types and quantities of alcohol that can be imported.

Although the shipping of beer is legal in most states, corner companies will still often insist on seeing an ABC license before accepting a shipment. Check in your area if any of the other private shipping companies have less strict policies for your location.

However, shipping beer by individuals is surprisingly more commonplace than you would imagine. It’s common knowledge among FedEx, UPS, and even USPS employees that people actively trade and ship their beer to friends or send homebrew beer to family members.

It’s always a good idea to open an account with your local FedEx or UPS if you are a craft beer fan who wants to ship beer regularly. This way you can print your shipping labels at home, have your package sealed when dropping off to avoid any embarrassing questions from the shipping clerk at the office, automate your payments and even get the occasional discount on your choice of shipping options.

Again we would encourage people not to ship beer through the USPS.

Always pack your beer before you take your consignment to the shipping office. Don’t ever pack your beer into the box there. Make sure to seal it properly with plenty of shipping tape and numerous “FRAGILE” stickers.

If anybody at the office asks you what’s in the box, don’t say beer. I’ve often told the clerk it’s collectible glassware, vintage sodas or olive oils, etc if pushed. Some of my buddies have even said live yeast samples which I suppose is more truthful in a way. To be completely honest though, I have only ever been asked once or twice, normally it’s no questions asked.

As long as the beer being sent is for personal consumption, most shipping companies turn a blind eye. It’s when beer for sale is being shipped without a brewery license or shipping authorization that you are committing a felony.

Packaging Your Beer For Shipping

You ship beer at your own risk. If beer during shipping should get damaged, leak, or the bottles explode, the package will be opened and the contents destroyed. You may receive a warning notification from some shipping companies and in the case of the USPS, a visit from a federal agent!

An assortment of shipping materials such as corrugated cardboard boxes, sticky bubble wrap, or specialized bottle shippers are available to reduce the risk of breakage to your beer bottles.

Normally I would buy in bulk from retailers such as Amazon as you will find that shipping companies like UPS and FedEx charge a significant markup on their basic materials.

Essential Packaging Materials

Before you decide which packaging materials you are going to need, you’ll have to decide if you are sending your beer in traditional glass bottles, plastic PET-style bottles, or cans.

Glass bottles are notoriously easier to break, but on the other hand, will preserve the beer much better than plastic containers. Glass bottles will also be significantly cheaper than aluminum cans and the cost of canning your beer.

• Corrugated shipping boxes. You should ensure all boxes used for shipping are sturdy and don’t have any rips or holes in them. Double boxing your beer can prevent the boxes from getting a puncture or rip which may expose the bottles or cans inside.
• Bubble Wrap is your best friend when shipping beer or other bottles and can even be used to wrap cans. Don’t skimp on it.
• Gallon-size Ziploc bags or large plastic garbage bags. Placing your bottles inside a sealed zip-loc or garbage bag can protect the outer box from getting wet if one of the bottles should break or leak. If a box is damp or leaking it will be pulled by the shipping company and you will lose all the beer.
• Rubber bands. Using rubber bands to keep the bubble wrap around your beer can cut down on the use of shipping tape which can be quite expensive. Not only will it allow the bubble wrap to be reused but will generally keep it in place better than tape.
• Electrical tape is optional but can be a great way of wrapping the crown caps of any beer bottles to prevent them from getting caught on each other in the box or popping off and springing a leak.
• Shipping tape. You are going to need plenty of it to ensure all the boxes are sealed properly and securely.
• Additional fillers include polystyrene packing “peanuts”, putting more bubble wrap in the box, or even old newspapers to help protect the beer. I have even used actual packets of beer peanuts which gives my pal something to nibble on while enjoying my latest IPA creation.

Bottle Shippers

One of the safest ways to ship bottles of beer is in dedicated bottle shippers which look like a large egg box but are designed for a bottle of wine.

Your local wine merchant may already stock some bottle shippers or you could look online at retailers such as Amazon. Although designed for wine bottles, they will work just as well to protect a standard 12 – 16 oz beer bottle.

Can I Mail Beer to a Friend? – Final Thoughts

In short, yes! Although there are several legal implications to be considered, as long as you are mailing beer to a friend for personal consumption without any charge, there are many options that while not strictly legit, shouldn’t need for a license.

Officially it’s a felony to ship alcohol through the US postal service without a license, but I have yet to meet anybody among my craft beer-loving pals who have been charged.

Using a private courier company like UPS or FedEx is a safer option, just don’t tell them it’s beer, even though they know it goes on!

Companies like Beer Clubs or Monthly Beer Membership schemes will normally have a license to ship alcohol and use carriers that are allowed to ship beer. If you are shipping beer to a beer competition, check with the organizer if they have any beer shipping policies in place.

Internationally, beer shipping can get more complex and also quite costly. It’s always better to see if a local wine merchant or beer importer stocks your favorite overseas beer before trying to import yourself. Why not share the knowledge with your local beer wholesaler of any beers you may have discovered abroad,? Who knows he may be able to find it imported by one of his existing suppliers or even request if there is enough demand.

Sapporo ranks as Japan’s oldest brewer and is also the best-selling Asian beer on the American market. Sapporo Premium by itself outsells all the other Asian beers in the US beer market, but did you know Sapporo also sells other beers in the US, including most notably Sapporo Reserve, a 100 percent malt beer?

With breweries based all around the globe, Sapporo has become one of the larger international brewing forces. Although most of us probably think of Japanese rice lagers when somebody says Sapporo, they do produce quite a diverse range of beers, including the low-calorie Sapporo Pure, Sapporo Light, and a German-style black lager or Schwarzbier called Sapporo Black,in addition to the two premium beer offerings Sapporo Premium (or Sapporo Draft as it’s called abroad), and Sapporo Reserve.

Which just begs the question, which is the better beer – Sapporo Premium or Sapporo Reserve?

A Brief History of the Sapporo Brewing Company

The roots of all Sapporo beers can be traced back to 1876 and the Kaitakushi Brewery, which was part of a Government owned initiative called the Hokkaido Development Commission. It not only ranks as the oldest brewery in Japan but also one of the oldest in the world (many of the early US brewers were starting up around this time too).

Like many of the early US brewers, Sapporo was influenced by the time-honored traditions of German lager brewing, with Seibei Nakagawa being the first brewmaster who had been trained in the art of brewing in Germany.

The brewery was to become a private enterprise in 1886, but at the beginning of the 20th Century, it merged with the major regional rival brewers of Japan to become the Dai-Nippon Brewing Company. It wasn’t until after the end of WWII that the companies would split and the Sapporo brand resumed under the Nippon Brewing Company, separating from their largest rival Asahi. The company was rebranded Sapporo Brewing again in the mid-1950s.

Although you could argue more people know the Sapporo brand worldwide, Asahi is actually the largest brewer in Japan, commanding a 37% share of the market, mainly due to the success of one product, Asahi Super Dry. Meanwhile Sapporo trails behind in fourth place of the largest domestic brewers in Japan with just a measly 11% share of the market. However, internationally Sapporo is the much more popular brand, especially here in the US. Today alongside the five breweries they operate in Japan, Sapporo is brewed in four other countries – Germany, Vietnam, Canada, and the USA. In recent years they have been actively seeking new breweries globally to add to their ever-growing portfolio.

In addition to the Sleeman Brewery in Canada, and the La Crosse Brewery in Wisconsin, Sapporo USA has, in the last decade, acquired some of the US’s most popular and pioneering breweries including San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing and, most recently in 2022, the Stone Brewing Company of San Diego.

Where Are Sapporo Premium and Sapporo Reserve Brewed?

Sapporo premium, which most American lager drinkers prefer, will normally come from the Wisconsin Brewery (although odd cans do turn up with ‘product of Vietnam’ on the label), while the more robust beer, Sapporo Reserve, is brewed at the Sleeman Brewery in Canada, known for their many other bitter ale-style beers such as Sleeman Cream Ale and Sleeman’s India Pale Ale. Who knows – with the acquisition of Stone in 2022, the brewing of Sapporo Reserve may move stateside!

Sapporo Premium vs Sapporo Reserve: Flavor Profile and Taste

Sapporo Premium, the perennial favorite of sushi lounges across the US, is a rice lager similar to an American adjunct lager. The crisp, clean taste of premium recalls a classic American light beer. A smooth rice cereal sweetness is evident from your first sip with a minimal aftertaste making it an ever-so-drinkable beer. It has a little hoppy sweetness too, but overall Sapporo Premium’s flavor is not overly strong.

By contrast, Sapporo Reserve is a good example of an International pale lager similar to many European beers. Reserve is much maltier, bolder, and more grainy on the palate, and offers a fuller and more complex flavor profile. The combination of malted barley and roasted malt creates a smooth, caramel-like sweetness, which is beautifully complemented by a touch of hop bitterness.

As you would expect from a European lager, Sapporo Reserve doesn’t have too much body but it’s not quite as watery as the Premium due to the exclusion of rice in the brewing process. An aromatic beer, the grain taste of Reserve is more reminiscent of corn rather than the usual bready flour taste you might expect from a lager. There is a slight bite of pepper to the finish, but it is quite subtle.

Sapporo Reserve vs Premium: The Mouthfeel

The mouthfeel of these two beers is more similar than it is different from each other.

Sapporo Premium has a silky, carbonated mouthfeel when it first hits your tongue, similar to what you would expect from your typical American lager. Although crisp and very refreshing, it can be somewhat thin.

Sapporo Reserve, just like the Premium, is softly carbonated but is much sharper up front. Crisp and clean like the Sapporo Premium, Reserve has a slightly fuller body and a drier finish. Sapporo Reserve has a far more complex mouthfeel, just like the taste of this all-malt premium beer.

Sapporo Premium vs Sapporo Reserve: Aroma

The smell of a beer is an essential component of the whole drinking experience, especially when paired with the taste of the beer to create an idea of the flavor. If you were to try plugging your nose next time you sip an ale, you would find only simple tastes like sweetness or bitterness coming through in the flavor.

Sapporo Premium has the aroma you would expect to find in a Japanese rice beer. The light cereal scent is often compared to the smell of a freshly opened bag of rice and is similar to the aromas found in American light lagers. There is also just the slightest whiff of grassy hops, and more trained noses may detect a slight vinous character similar to that found in a very dry white wine.

In contrast, the smell of Sapporo Reserve is all beer. It showcases a lightly toasted malt character with hints of citrus backed by plenty of sweet malted cereal notes. A faint grassy hop aroma can be reminiscent of many German beers with their noble hop smell, although not quite as strong. Sapporo Reserve is not an overly aromatic beer when compared to other all-malt brews, but it definitely has a touch more character than Sapporo Premium.

Sapporo Premium vs Sapporo Reserve: Which Has the Most Calories?

Sapporo Premium has 140 calories per 12 oz serving compared to Sapporo Reserve’s 151 calories for the same 12 oz size serving. To put that in perspective, it’s about the same as a bottle of regular Budweiser at 145 calories per 12 oz bottle, but nearly half as much again as the current trend for light beers, which normally come in at under 100 calories per bottle.

The difference in calories between Sapporo Premium and Reserve is negligible and won’t make too much difference to most American beer drinkers unless they consume larger amounts of these drinkable beers over time when the calories could mount up. But most of the time you are probably going to be drinking these beers with Japanese food, which can be much healthier and lighter anyhow. Therefore the extra few calories in the beer really aren’t something to worry about (that’s what I tell the wife anyhow, as I’m downing my sixth can of Sapporo!).

Sapporo Premium vs Sapporo Reserve: Alcohol Content

Both these Sapporo beers have a fairly standard ABV comparable to most domestic lagers. Sapporo Premium’s 4.9% ABV is very close to the ever-so-slightly stronger 5.1% ABV of the Sapporo Reserve. Again, the difference is so insignificant it shouldn’t make too much difference to most beer drinkers, but if you do plan on driving later in the evening bear in mind Sapporo Reserve is slightly stronger in terms of alcohol by volume percentage.

Sapporo Premium vs Sapporo Reserve: The Appearance

Sapporo Premium, when poured directly out of its iconic can, pours with a nice, pale yellow color. The silky white head of foam barely lingers on the glass with very little lacing as is standard for most lagers.

The all-malt Reserve pours a touch darker in color with more of a gold-honeyed shade to it. The nice white head seems a bit thicker with plenty of lacing. This is not a dark beer as such but the shade of gold with about a finger-wide head of luxurious foam looks stunning in a beer glass.

Sapporo has won awards for its packaging in the past and its attention to detail carries through to all its products. Sapporo Premium comes in an eye-catching silver can made from sturdy steel rather than the flimsy aluminum of most of its competitors in the US. Looking almost indestructible, the beer can even had a wholly removable top at one stage so it could be used to mimic the experience of drinking Sapporo from a glass. Although Sapporo has retained the beer glass-like shape of the can, it now has the typical ring-pull tab.

Sapporo Reserve comes in a similar silver bullet steel can but with a golden bottom, similar to the lovely color of the all-malt beer. It never featured the removable top as this beer really needs pouring into a glass to admire in all its splendor.

Sapporo Premium vs Sapporo Reserve: Brewing Process & Ingredients

The brewing process for Japanese lagers shouldn’t hold many surprises for most beer drinkers. After all, the first brewmaster was trained in Germany. The process of brewing Sapporo begins with the mash, where malted grains are mixed with hot water to extract a sugary liquid known as wort from the husks of the grains. Sapporo Premium uses yeast, malted barley, water, and hops and adds rice to make their Premium beer. Buckwheat is also used in smaller amounts during brewing for a crisper taste.

Where Sapporo Reserve differs is in the 100% malted barley which is used. There are no adjuncts here like rice, buckwheat, or corn syrup, just a 100% good, old-fashioned malt.

After the beers have been conditioned, they are packaged in cans, bottles, or, in the case of Sapporo Premium, often in kegs. Sapporo Premium even gets marketed outside of the USA as Sapporo Draft, a version of the Sapporo beer you would find on draft.

Sapporo Premium vs Sapporo Reserve: Food Pairing

Food is an important part of Japanese culture and all beers are brewed to be an accompaniment to food. Although both Sapporo Premium and Reserve would go well when served ice-cold with a bowl of Japanese ramen, the lighter crisper taste of the Premium works better with sushi and seafood dishes, where the dry finish can often scrub the oily fish flavors from your palate.

Don’t just think of Sapporo Premium as the go-to beer for a sushi night though, it can pair well with most young cheeses, especially goat’s cheese, and on a hot summer’s day it can be just as refreshing as a Coors Light.

With a fuller body and all-malt flavor, Sapporo Reserve offers even more versatility in its food pairings. The malts in this beer can calm the heat of any spicier dishes, but it will also meet the stronger flavors of grilled meats much better than its rice-brewed counterpart. Sapporo reserve is more about the hibachi rather than the sushi, it needs stronger flavors to stand up to the more complex flavor profile. Traditional German foods like pretzels or hot dogs, and American fare such as Tacos can be ideal foods, with the carbonic bite of the all-malt lager helping to cleanse the palate better.

Sapporo Premium vs Sapporo Reserve: Who Are the Brands Aimed at?

Clever advertising and a large marketing budget have seen Sapporo hold the position of America’s top-selling Japanese beer for the last 30 years, even beating off other large Asian brands such as Tiger Beer of Singapore. In 2014, a 2 million dollar integrated advertising campaign aimed to build on the brand’s popularity with hip clubbers and style leaders with the “Legendary Biru” TV commercials, fusing traditional Japanese iconography with a modern, cosmopolitan sensibility.

Sapporo Premium is much closer to an American-middle beer than Sapporo Reserve and caters well to your average American palate. This isn’t too surprising, considering it traces its roots back to traditional German brewing methods just like many of the mainstream domestic brewers of America. Sapporo tends to market itself as a more high-end product, as displayed in everything from the use of elegant Japanese culture in their advertising, the gold stars which adorn their products, and even the quality materials they use in their iconic beer cans. Sapporo Premium is marketed to the fashion-conscious younger generation who frequent sushi lounges and hip clubs.

Sapporo Reserve is marketed as more of a premium beer in their range – confusing, when their flagship product is also named Sapporo Premium. Sapporo Reserve is aimed at the more discerning beer drinkers, a slightly older demographic but not too old, who appreciate the fuller body of an all-malt beer. You are more likely to see Reserve served in bottles at an upmarket Japanese restaurant than in silver cans adorning the buffet conveyor belts of a budget sushi lounge.

Sapporo Reserve vs Sapporo Premium: Last Orders at the Bar

Both these beers from Sapporo are tasty beers and shouldn’t be relegated to only being sold at Japanese restaurants. Which you prefer is simply a matter of personal preference. Personally, I prefer the lighter, crisper, and drier finish of the Premium’s almost wine-like character. Both the aroma and taste are ideal for wine drinkers, and it’s often my wife’s go-to beer on a hot summer day.

That’s not to say I think Sapporo Reserve is a bad beer. Think of it as Sapporo Premium’s big brother, with a fuller body and bolder, more robust taste. Reserve is still a highly drinkable lager, but in an ever-expanding universe of international lagers, it’s just another imported lager, lacking the unique characteristics that make Sapporo Premium a great alternative to a domestic light beer.

Both Premium and Reserve are Sapporo beers best enjoyed with some traditional Japanese food.
