Hey all! Well, the Stanley Cup Finals are finally upon us! It's hard to fathom that just a few months ago, we were all gearing up for Winnipeg's first NHL regular season since 1995. While we continue to lament the fact that the Jets will be using their summer to shake the rust off their golf swing, purchase new fishing tackle or spend cool summer nights boating on the great lakes of Minnesota, two teams have distinguished themselves as Conference Champions and will now battle in a best-of-seven series which will award the 2012 Stanley Cup trophy. Will it be the Devils or the Kings that will be crowned the league's champion in a matter of weeks?

The 2012 trade deadline was atrocious, but the Chicago Blackhawks managed to land on our winners list for acquiring Johnny Oduya from the Winnipeg Jets for a second- and third-round pick in 2013.
Now, he's a winner too: Earning a 3-year deal with the Blackhawks (terms to follow). Oduya had a $3.5 cap hit and a $4 million base salary last season, the last of a 3-year deal.
Oduya wanna avoid free agency? Why yes, he did. (NHL.com's got nothing on our terrible puns.)
When the Blackhawks traded Brian Campbell to the Florida Panthers, they gained cap relief but lost a premiere puck-moving defenseman with speed. Oduya is a poor man's Brian Campbell, but deftly filled the role in the regular season.
He had five points in 18 games for the Blackhawks in the regular season, and three in six games in the postseason. He averaged 23:14 TOI in the playoffs, right behind Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook, but didn't have the strongest series against the Phoenix Coyotes.

There's not a better way to interpret the Hart Trophy for me than to think of who was the most valuable player to their team. To simply say "the most valuable player in the league" doesn't mean anything, because if they're good they have negative values to far more teams than they have positive values...so the MVP concept should be grounded in who was most valuable to their team. Each of my picks were vital contributors to teams that would not have been successful without them, and for me that's about as close to high value as you can get.

My choices and reasoning after the jump.

Hello, this is a feature that will run through the entire season and aims to recap the weekend's events and boils those events down to one admittedly superficial fact or stupid opinion about each team. Feel free to complain about it.
You're going to hear a lot of talk throughout the Stanley Cup Finals about how shocking all of this is.
The No. 6 Devils coming out of the East to take on the ultra-dominant-and-somehow-No. 8 Kings. The first matchup since the current playoff system began in which either a 6 or 8 is guaranteed to win the Cup. The only other 6 and 8 seeds to even make it are Calgary in 2004 and Edmonton in 2006 (though more than a few 7 seeds have made it through to the finals, the most recent being Philadelphia in 2010).
What intriguing underdog stories. Except not really.
( Coming Up: Simon Gagne cleared for Kings; imagining Lamoriello with the Rangers; why Shea Weber should win Norris; John Davidson and the Flames; Dominik Hasek's comeback; Zach Hamill traded for Chris Bourque; tampering by the Leafs?; Jamal Mayers and the Blackhawks; Stars move up for Alex Galchenyuk?; no Ryan O'Reilly talks yet; free Jets tickets controversy; Steve Yzerman's goalie chase; Adam Henrique's hero moment; and we're losing a great hockey joke in Cristobal Huet .)

Bueller?

It's been an especially odd post-season, with favorites falling and previously apathetic fanbases awakening suddenly to their team's unexpected success. If the Kings win the cup, as they should, will that victory be met with a bang or a whimper in Los Angeles? To be fair to that city, it has been so long since their team enjoyed any notable success that they can be forgiven if they forgot about hockey for awhile.

Allan discussed this and a variety of other topics with Kent Wilson, David Staples, Kirk Luedeke and others on this week's show.

This is Nation Radio.
