Winnipeg will close out its season tonight when they host the Montreal Canadiens. Although not quite dead, Winnipegs playoff hopes are definitely on life support. Winnipeg needs to win tonight and have either the New York Rangers or Ottawa Senators lose all their remaining games. Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens are safely in the playoff picture but, they are still playing for position. Montreal currently sits tied with Boston for the division lead, however they have played an extra game, making this a must win for Montreal as well. It is going to be a good all Canadian match up at the Hangar tonight so stay tuned.

Canadiens

Montreal surprised everyone this year. After such a disappointing result last season Montreal bounced back and with the addition of a few key young players Montreal has earned at least one series with home ice advantage and still has a chance at the division crown. Montreal is strong in all facets of the game, up front with players like Max Pacioretty, Thomas Plekanec and the young Brenden Gallagher scoring goals has not been a problem. With the addition of P.K. Subban and Andrei Markhov not only do the Habs get production from the back-end but they are solid in their own zone, especially when you add one of the best goalies in the game today in the mix with Carey Price. Price has been on and off at times this year but remains a goalie you can count on to steal games and make the big saves.

Jets

disappointment has been the word of the day surrounding the Jets and their fans since the game in Washington Tuesday night. Needing to win the Jets came out and for much of the game were dominated by the stronger looking Washington Capitals and put their playoff hopes severely in doubt. It is not all lost though for the Winnipeg Jets, with a win over Montreal, Winnipeg can at least put some pressure on a couple other teams and at this time of the year anything can happen. Winnipeg will, as always, lean on goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. Pavelec got some criticism for the way the Washington game started however, without Pavelec this team would not even be in this playoff chase. Ondrej Pavelec has proved that he is a number one goaltender in the NHL, but he’ll have to do it again tonight to keep the Jets alive.

Keys to the Game

Pay the Price: The only way to beat Carey Price is going to be to get in his kitchen and make life difficult. Get in front of him, make it hard to see and find the rebounds.

Discipline: Stay out of the box, with all of the offensive power Montreal has the Jets can not afford to go on the penalty kill. Stay even and you have a chance.

It ain’t over yet!: Sure the loss Tuesday hurt, and in a few days we may all be able to look back and really wonder what could have been. Right now though, the Jets need to have a short memory and play tonight as they have the past few weeks, play with urgency and go take these last two points.

Starting Goalies

Ondrej Pavelec (21-19-3) GAA: 2.77 SV% .906
Carey Price (20-13-4) GAA: 2.60 SV% .904

Injuries

Peluso WPG, (Hand) unknown
Slater WPG, (Upper Body) out
Enstrom WPG, (Mid-Body) out
Bogosian WPG, (concussion) out
Wellwood WPG, (Hand) out
Jokinen WPG, (Lower Body) out

Emelin MTL, (Knee) questionable

Last 10 (W-L-OTL)

Jets: 6-3-1
Montreal: 4-6-0

Prediction

Jets give home fans one last thing to cheer about
Jets 3 Canadiens 1

Two of the hottest teams in the NHL meet in Washington Tuesday night with the highest stakes. For Washington it is simple, win and you’re in, Winnipeg on the other hand is a much longer story. Though a win would put them in very good position, they do still need help. The last time these teams met seemed to be the turning point in the Caps season. Sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference Standings Washington won two games on consecutive nights and since then they have been near unbeatable and find themselves with a chance to clinch the Southeast division. Strap in hockey fans as in the words of Bob Cole, This one will be a dandy!

Capitals

Safe to say in the last month or so the Washington Capitals have been one of the best teams in the league. With an offense that has come alive and a much improved defense that we haven’t seen from Washington in recent years. You cannot talk about the Caps however without mentioning Alex Ovechkin. After a start of the year that left many pundants saying he was no longer an elite player, Ovechkin has exploded and may be the best player in the league right now. He has come from nowhere to take the lead in the NHL scoring race, as well as being a stronger player in his own end. The Caps depend on their superstar and all by himself, he can win a game.

Jets

It is getting a little redundant for Winnipeg but once again this is the biggest game in the young franchises history. Winnipeg is within one point of Washington, New York and Ottawa so a win today will improve their chances by an enormous amount. For the Jets it is simple, you have got to play simple, a track meet will not be a path to success for the Jets. Winnipeg needs to bog down the game and slow down the high-octane offense of Washington. Ondrej Pavelec who was sensational against Buffalo will probably have to be even better. The Czech netminder who puts forward a good argument for Jets MVP is a large key to every Jets game. When he’s on his game, bet on the Jets, but if not, their chances do not look great.

Keys to the Game

Bottom six: Winnipegs 3rd and 4th lines need to be an option for Claude Noel in this game. These lines must be able to hold the Caps offense while still managing some offense.

Ovi: Stop him, and you got a shot.

Slow it down: Don’t run and gun with the Washington Capitals, slow the game down, play along the boards and win the battles.

Starting Goalies

Ondrej Pavelec (21-18-3) GAA: 2.74 SV% .906
Braden Holtby (21-12-1) GAA: 2.59 SV% .920

Injuries

Peluso WPG, (Hand) unknown
Slater WPG, (Upper Body) out
Antropov WPG, (Lower Body) unknown
Enstrom WPG, (Mid-Body) out
Bogosian WPG, (concussion) out
Wellwood WPG, (Hand) out
Jokinen WPG, (Lower Body) out

Ward WSH, (Knee) unknown
Laich WSH, (Groin) unknown
Poti WSH, (Back) out

Last 10 (W-L-OTL)

Jets: 6-3-1
Capitals: 9-1-0

Prediction

Heart has one opinion, head another, lets just enjoy!

Winnipeg continues their push for the playoffs Thursday night when they play their 5th straight home game, hosting the Carolina Hurricanes. The Jets drew themselves into a tie for eighth place with the New York Rangers Tuesday but sill have some work to do if they hope to punch their ticket. On the other side of the coin the Carolina Hurricanes who led the Southeast for the majority of the season have now fallen completely out of the playoff picture and will look to play spoiler Thursday night. As the Jets saw Tuesday that does not mean an easy game and this should prove to be a fight for the 2 points.

Hurricanes

The Hurricanes collapse this season started with the loss of not only Cam Ward their number one goaltender, but also number two on the depth chart. That, combined with a few other key injuries really killed the Hurricanes season as they could not fight through and despite a hot start have fallen out of the race. The Canes remain dangerous however, especially on the front end. With the Staal brothers anchoring the center position and the likes of Alexander Semin and Jeff Skinner on the wings Carolina can put the puck in the net. Jeff Skinner will be a question mark going in however as he left Tuesdays game with an apparent upper body injury and it is unclear what his status will be for the game against Winnipeg.

Jets

Same story different chapter for Winnipeg on Thursday. The Jets once again basically need to win if they want to stay alive and once again will look for some help around the league with both New York teams as well as Ottawa and Washington all in action. Winnipeg must take care of themselves first at that means continuing their strong home play and getting the two points for themselves. Winnipeg has played very strong recently and added a new wrinkle to their game Tuesday as their fourth line which at times this year has barely seen the ice during a game, played a huge amount of minutes and were very effective. The line made up of Alex Burmistrov, Eric Tangradi and Mike Santorelli must continue this play as when they can log solid minutes and create some offense they take a lot of pressure and attention off the big guys and can be a big advantage to the game.

Keys to the Game

Stop Staal: Eric has been hot lately. With a goal and an assist Tuesday in Ottawa Staal extended his point streak to four games and if he is playing well the Canes become a very dangerous team.

Captain: Andrew Ladd has been this teams leader both on and off the ice all season. He has been scoring like a first liner and bona fide number one scoring option which the Jets need if they want this push to be successful.

Ugly goals: They don’t need to be pretty. Get to the net bother the goaltender and find rebounds.

Starting Goalies

Ondrej Pavelec (19-18-2) GAA: 2.75 SV% .906
Justin Peters (4-9-0) GAA: 2.94 SV% .905

Injuries

Redmond WPG, (Thigh Laceration) out
Brent CAR, (Lower Body) unknown
Bowman CAR, (Lower Body) unknown

Last 10 (W-L-OTL)

Jets: 5-5-0
Hurricanes: 2-8-0

Prediction

Home Crowd carries Jets to tough win
Jets 3 Hurricanes 2

The last meeting between these two teams as division rivals takes place Tuesday night at the MTS Centre when the Winnipeg Jets host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Winnipeg has won two of the three match ups this season the last of which was a 3-2 win on March 24th. Winnipeg and Tampa come into this game from two completely different perspectives. The Jets are still struggling to earn a right to play in the post season, while the Lightning have been in the role of spoilers for the last couple weeks.

Lightning

The Lightning have had a year to forget so far this season. Nothing has gone well for the Lightning as it will be another year without playoffs and another rebuilding off season with a new coach. As has been the Lightnings M.O. the last couple of years this is a high powered offensive team that has problems keeping the puck out of their net. Led by Steven Stamkos, who is tied for first in the league with Alexander Ovechkin for most goals, this team can score and score quick. There is plenty of offensive ability and the Jets must play a responsible defensive game if they hope to get a W.

Jets

Getting wins is huge for the Jets. Still fighting for the last spot in the East as well as the top spot in the Southeast the Jets have not received much help from other teams. The three teams the Jets are chasing, The Washington Capitals at the top of the Southeast and the 7th and 8th place New York Islanders and New York Rangers are a combined 24-3-4 in their last 31 games so the Jets cannot afford any set backs. However the Jets received more bad news as earlier this week they were told that Tobi Enstrom will be out for the immediate future and is considered week to week. The loss of Enstrom is huge for the Jets but it opens a door for Grant Clitsome to play with Dustin Byfuglien and get top 4 minutes. The Jets D core must be solid and responsible. If they can avoid giving up odd man rushes it will go a long way to winning the game they so desperately need.

Keys to the Game

Steven Stamkos: Simply put he is the best pure scorer in the game today and if you can stop him you boost your chances of stopping the Lighting.

Counter Punch: The Lightning are very strong offensively but can be prone to turnovers and counter attacks. When they get the chance Winnipeg must attack with speed and go right at the Tampa defense.

Keep it Simple: The Jets are best when they play simple. Don’t overpass or overplay, put the puck on the net, bang and play ugly.

Starting Goalies

Ondrej Pavelec (18-18-2) GAA: 2.75 SV% .906
Ben Bishop(10-8-0) GAA: 2.68 SV% .920

Injuries

Redmond WPG, (Thigh Laceration) out
Peluso WPG, (Hand) out
Slater WPG, (Upper Body) out
Antropov WPG, (Lower Body) out
Enstyom WPG, (Mid-Body) out

Pyatt TB, (upper body) Probable
Lindback TB, (Ankle) out
Ohlund TB, (Knee) out

Last 10 (W-L-OTL)

Jets: 5-5-0
Lightning: 4-4-2

Prediction

Jets continue strong play, overwhelm Lightning
Jets 5 Lightning 2

Two teams who have struggled as of late meet in Winnipeg with huge consequences as the Buffalo Sabres come to town to visit the Winnipeg Jets. Though neither team is in any way out of it, both need to be spectacular and get some help if they want to make the post season dance. Both teams are coming off a win and a couple of days rest so there will be no excuses for either team and we should see a highly competitive match up.

Sabres

Buffalo has been a disappointment this season and there is no other way to describe it. The day after these teams last meeting Sabres then coach Lindey Ruff was fired, but the change has not really helped Buffalo in the standings. Buffalo is a team that will go much in the same direction as their goalie. Ryan Miller is still one of the best goalies on the planet, the Olympic silver medalist has struggled at times this season but when he shows up to play he can steal a game.

Jets

Winnipeg comes off a huge win over the Flyers where on the back of 4 2nd period goals the Jets defeated Philadelphia 4-1. A very strong game and hopefully one the Jets can build off as all facets of their game worked well. A huge bright spot was the PK for the Jets as they were perfect man down, against one of the top teams in the league on the power play. Coming in to this game, as the rest this season will be it is another must win for the Jets. They can no longer afford the loss of 2 points, especially when they are playing a team under them in the standings.

Keys to the Game

Opportunity: With the Capitals and Hurricanes meeting the Canadiens and Penguins respectively this may be Winnipeg’s best chance to gain two points on both teams that they need to pass in the next couple weeks. Though they can do nothing to control what happens in those games, they must do their part and get 2 over Buffalo.

Bother Miller: Ryan Miller is the key to the Sabres team. The Jets must get to the crease and make him uncomfortable. Winnipeg fans have been known to get on Miller and if the JEts can give them a reason you know the boisterous crowd would love to taunt him again.

Captain Ladd: Andrew Ladd was a super hero for this team carrying the offensive load for much of the year. However, as of late Ladd has slowed down and has now gone a week without a goal. Winnipeg needs their captain, as well as the entire top line, to pick it up and earn them the win.

Starting Goalies

Ondrej Pavelec (16-18-2) GAA: 2.84 SV% .904
Ryan Miller (12-15-5) GAA: 2.83 SV% .912

Injuries

Redmond WPG, (Thigh Laceration) out
Peluso WPG, (Hand) out
Slater WPG, (Upper Body) out
Antropov WPG, (Lower Body) out

Leino BUF, (Upper Body) questionable
Vanek BUF, (Upper Body) questionable
Sulzer BUF, (Knee) out

Last 10 (W-L-OTL)

Jets: 3-7-0
Sabres: 6-2-2

Winnipeg Jets (18-18-2) at Montreal Canadiens (23-8-5)

6:30 p.m., Bell Centre

TV: TSN Jets, TSN Habs, RDS Radio: TSN 1290, TSN 690

The night after one of the most exciting days on the NHL calendar, the trade deadline, these two teams who were largely inactive meet. Although sitting right beside each other in the standings this is the story of two completely different teams. While Montreal battles for the top spot in the conference, Winnipeg looks to be a team that is holding onto the playoffs with their last bit of strength, and now need some help if they want to survive.

Canadiens

The Canadiens have been one of the top teams in the league all year and post a very stiff test for the struggling Jets. Montreal has only lost 8 games this season, and have had flashes of brilliance in every position. However, for the Habs it all starts with franchise goaltender Carey Price. In recent years Price has shown himself to be one of the best goaltenders in the game, and is an early favorite to represent Canada at the 2014 Olympic games. With 18 wins this year and 3 shutouts, he is the key to Montreals success and often their play goes as his does.

Jets

Winnipeg has given their supporters little to cheer about in the last week. Losing 4 straight at the most important time of the season has erased any lead the Jets had not only in the Southeast but also at the bottom of the Eastern conference standing. They are now not only fighting for the 3rd seed, but any seed at all. There is no easy answer as to why the Jets have struggled, they have struggled in every facet of the game. Adding to fans frustration, the Jets were all but silent as the deadline approached, the only move they did make was claiming 27-year-old Mike Santorelli off waivers from the Florida Panthers. The Vancouver native is playing in his third full NHL season, after scoring 20 his first big league season he has regressed and this year has just 2 goals and an assist. The other big addition to the Jets roster was the some what surprising addition of Jacob Trouba who made the decision to leave University and join the big club. It is unclear when he will get his first NHL game experience but he will be joining the big club on the road this week.

Keys to the Game

Turn it around: Time has slipped away for the Jets. They cannot afford many more losses as with each point they fail to acquire, their chances of getting a playoff spot drastically fall. The Jets need to start winning and fast if they want to find a partner in the post season dance.

Traffic: Price is too good to beat on a clean shot, if he can see it, he will stop it. Winnipeg needs to get to the net, deflect pucks and make life difficult for the Canadiens net minder.

Special Teams: The only way to describe the Jets play man up or man down recently is bad. Not many playoff teams are near the bottom of both categories so the Jets need to pick it up on both ends to get wins.

Starting Goalies

Ondrej Pavelec (15-17-2) GAA: 2.84 SV% .904
Carey Price (18-6-4) GAA: 2.24 SV% .916

Injuries

Redmond WPG, (Thigh Laceration) out
Peluso WPG, (Hand) out
Slater WPG, (Upper Body) out
Wright WPG, (Unknown) questionable
Antropov WPG, (Lower Body) out
Clitsome WPG, (Upper Body) out

Armstrong MTL, (Lower Body) out
Diaz MTL, (Concussion) out
Bourque MTL, (Concussion) out

Last 10 (W-L-OTL)

Jets: 3-7-0
Canadiens: 6-3-1

Prediction

Jets play improves, but Montreal too much to handle
Canadiens 4 Jets 2

The top two teams in the Southeast division meet again Sunday afternoon, this time in Winnipeg, as the Carolina Hurricanes will visit the MTS Centre. In their last meeting Tuesday night the Jets surrendered the first goal, and were being worked over much of the first. However due to strong play by Ondrej Pavelec the Jets only trailed by 1 and ended up scoring the next 4 straight goals and earning a 4-1 win. The win put Winnipeg up 6 points in the Southeast, covering for the 3 games Carolina has in hand.

Hurricanes

Carolina has now lost 6 straight and have watched their Southeast hopes dwindle, especially with the sudden surge of the Washington Capitals. After the loss to Winnipeg at home the Hurricanes went to Toronto where they blew a lead late in the third, giving up 4 unanswered goals for the second straight game. Carolina has looked lost as of late, their biggest problem coming in their own end. Without Cam Ward the goaltending has struggled behind a below average defensive corps. Carolina needs to turn it around, and quick if they still want to have a chance at post season hockey.

Jets

Winnipeg followed up a strong performance in Raleigh with a dissapointing outing in Pittsburgh. It seemed everyone counted the Jets out before the game against the Penguins even started, and after a strong first ten minutes or so the Jets were overwhelmed and had no answer for the dominant Pittsburgh Penguins. That game needs to be left in Pittsburgh however as with Carolinas loss in Toronto, no harm was done in the standings. The Jets need to come out and take this game from the struggling Canes, as that would at least put them in charge of their own destiny, making the games in hand irrelevant.

Keys to the Game

Stall the Staals’: Eric and Jordan are the Hurricanes best players, and if you can shut them down and keep them quiet you take a lot of wind out of the sails of this Canes team.

Pavvy: Ondrej Pavelec was given the night off in Pittsburgh so there is no reason for him not to come out sharp this afternoon. When Pavelec is the teams best player, the Jets win so that is what they will be looking for Saturday aftertoon.

Defense: The D struggled on Friday and gave the high powered Penguins to many chances. If not for relativly strong play from Al Montoya the score could have been much worse. Winnipeg needs to play strong defensivly while not giving up that strong back end contribution that makes this team so dangerous.

Starting Goalies

Ondrej Pavelec (15-14-2) GAA: 2.75 SV% .905
Justin Peters (2-4-0) GAA: 3.18 SV% .899

Injuries

I watch my dad as he stands in our living room; standing in front of the TV, with a drink in his hand, wearing his lucky toque. It’s just a plain blue toque but he swears they’ll win if he wears it. He yells at the TV about anything and everything the Jets are doing. If it’s not Byfuglien and my Dad’s fascination on his skill, it’s Kane and his comment of, “He’s just so fast! You gotta hit on every shift you’re on!”

When the Jets came back, my dad and I couldn’t have been happier! For months, it was all we could talk about. On December 9, 2011, I got a call during school from him saying we got tickets for that evening’s game; it was going to be my very first! I was so enthusiastic that my teacher had to tell me she was starting the class and to end my call! The memories from that game are still extremely vivid and to have shared that with my dad was one memory I’ll always hold dear.

Fast forwarding to January 2013 and all the excitement for the Jets with my dad and I is still there. With all the incredible times I’ve shared with my dad, I still think this is my favourite opportunity that I’ve had to bond with him. The best thing in the world is when he asks me when I’ll be home so we can watch the Jets game together. It’s such a thrill to cheer them on together from our comfy couches, toques and Jets sweaters in tow. I’m so grateful for this team for my ability to have quality time with him. Being an 18-year-old university student is hard, especially when it comes to family time but this team gave me a chance to slow life down and share 3 hours of game day with the best father anyone could ask for.

You could say that my enthusiasm for the Jets and for hockey as a whole came from my time on my daddy-daughter dates (as we like to call them). Realizing that hockey is a true passion for me, I can’t thank him enough for wanting to bond with me over this incredible game and with the coolest team around.

Washington and Winnipeg meet for the first of two meeting on consecutive nights at the MTS Centre today. The rare back to back will be the third and fourth meetings of the two teams this season. The teams split their two games in Washington with the Caps winning the most recent by a 3-0 score, a game and result which was very disappointing for Winnipeg who had come in playing so well and seemed to lay an egg on that night. These will be 4 highly contested points as one team is at the top of the division and trying to hold on, while the other is near the bottom and trying to fight back into a playoff race.

Capitals

Though at this point a playoff spot seems almost like a dream in Washington, this team is putting off waking up as long as possible. On Tuesday Washington looked very impressive against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference the Pittsburgh Penguins, taking a lead into the third period before falling by a 2-1 score. Although having a very disappointing season the Capitals are not a team to overlook as they are still packed with offensive power and on any night can come out and surprise any team.

Jets

Winnipeg has simply been great in this last little stretch. Besides the stinker in Ottawa Sunday evening Winnipeg has played strong recently and gotten some very big wins which have paid off, placing the Jets at the top of the Southeast division. They will look to hold on to that position Thursday night against the Washington Capitals. In Winnipegs last game, Tuesday night, the Jets came from behind scoring three unanswered third period goals and beating one of the strongest teams in the East. Although the first two periods of the game were completely flat for the Jets, they came out in the third and found a way to win, which good teams, and teams that make the playoffs have to be able to do.

Keys to the Game

Home sweet home: After a poor start to the year at the MTS Centre the Jets have been hot recently, feeding off the home crowd and getting the job done. This must continue for tonight.

Take Advantage: The Washington Capitals have not been a good team this year, however the Jets have a habit of playing down to their opponents and taking nights off against lesser teams. This can not be the case as at this point of the lockout shortened season every game needs to be treated like a playoff game. If the Jets come out with their A game they will get a win.

Goaltending: As it does most nights, a lot of the Jets success falls onto the shoulders of Ondrej Pavelec, he plays well, the Jets have a great shot to win. On the other end the Caps have gotten shakey goaltending at best, Winnipeg must get the puck towards the net and take advantage of some questionable goaltending.

Starting Goalies

Ondrej Pavelec (13-12-2) GAA: 2.73 SV% .906
Braden Holtby (10-10-0) GAA: 2.92 SV% .911

Injuries

Enstrom WPG, (Shoulder) questionable
Redmond WPG, (Thigh Laceration) out
Peluso WPG, (Hand) out
Slater WPG, (Upper Body) out
Montoya WPG, (Lower Body) questionable

Poti WSH, (Back) out
Kundratek WSH, (Leg) out
Erskine WSH, (Upper Body) out
Green WSH, (Groin) out

Last 10 (W-L-OTL)

Jets: 6-3-1
Capitals: 5-5-0

Prediction

Jets are a different team since these teams last met, dominate on home ice
Jets 6 Capitals 3
