To honor and thank him for his service and celebrate his well-earned retirement, Winona Health invites community members to an open house Sunday, June 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Winona Health’s Robinson Healing Garden located between the Lakeside Café (hospital cafeteria) and Lake Winona Manor on the Winona Health campus at 855 Mankato Avenue in Winona.
“Dr. Kelly’s career reflects the very best of community-based healthcare,” said Rachelle Schultz, Winona Health president and CEO. “For more than four decades, he has cared for generations of families while building lasting relationships. His commitment to caring for others — through family medicine, emergency care and countless community roles — has left a lasting mark on Winona.”
Dr. Kelly joined Winona Health in 1983 after completing his residency training through the Blackhawk Area Medical Education Foundation Iowa Family Practice Residency associated with the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis and is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
“I came to Winona in 1983 and immediately knew this was where I wanted to live,” Dr. Kelly said. “The relationships with patients, fellow caregivers and the community are what kept me here all these years. While healthcare has changed tremendously over time, the doctor-patient relationship really has not changed — and that’s what keeps you going each day.”

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Kelly said some of the most meaningful moments included helping families welcome new life into the world, supporting patients through illness and loss, and building long-term relationships with generations of local families.
“I’m very grateful to Winona Health and to the Winona community for supporting me throughout what I consider a very rewarding career,” Dr. Kelly said.

In our Winona Health School-Based Health Clinics, students can walk out of class and into appointments for counseling, physicals, medication follow-ups and mental health support.
Inside the WSHS location, care is provided in a space designed to feel welcoming, calming and supportive.
One of the newest additions is a mural created by Winona Health mental health counselor Celeste Sullivan, who also works with students through the school-based clinics. The artwork brings themes of health, community, movement and connection into the space, helping create an environment that feels less clinical and more comfortable for students seeking care.
As the need for mental health support continues to grow, these clinics are helping reduce barriers to care while supporting students where they already are — at school.

McClenathan Nursing Scholarship through the Winona Health Foundation, helping them take the next step in their nursing journeys.
Coral Bausman started at Winona Health at 14 years old in Food and Nutrition – she has since been a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant), a TMA (Trained Medication Aide) and is currently an ER Tech at Winona Health while she finishes her RN degree.
“Caring for people directly and assisting in making their lives better brings me so much purpose in life,” Coral said.
“Coral is meant for healthcare,” said Kelli Thelen, nurse educator at Winona Health. “She consistently provides above and beyond care to her patients and shows them genuine compassion – she treats them like the person they are, rather than a task to be checked off.”
Jannessa Niemeyer is also balancing caregiving and school. She has been a CNA and TMA at Winona Health and will be an intern on the Medical/Surgical/Pediatric floor this summer, where she will gain hands-on experience.
“To me, compassionate, patient-centered care means treating each patient according to their own values,” Jannessa said. “This means respecting patients’ autonomy, culture, values and concerns while listening attentively and advocating for them.”
“Her commitment to doing what is right and asking thoughtful, intuitive questions, even when difficult, reflects the core values of her nursing profession,” said Brit Voshage, associate professor, Department of Nursing at WSU. “She meets challenges with resilience and actively pursues opportunities to expand her competence and ability to provide high quality, safe and effective nursing care.”
The scholarship was established in memory of Phyllis A. McClenathan, a long-time nurse in Winona Health’s Family Birth Center who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Her husband, Dean, and their children created the scholarship in 2006 to honor her legacy and support future nurses like Coral and Jannessa.
Anna Sibenaller, Winona Health Foundation community coordinator, shared how meaningful the scholarship program is—both to the recipients and the family who made it possible.
“We want to express our gratitude to Dean McClenathan and Phyllis’s family for establishing the Phyllis A. McClenathan Nursing Scholarship,” she said. “We are so thrilled that we’re able to help the next generation of caregivers become the very best that they can be.”
The $1,000 scholarship is available to individuals in the final one or two semesters of completing a two- or four-year nursing degree who live within a 60-mile radius of Winona, attend a post-secondary school within the designated area or are current caregivers at Winona Health.

Erin Hanson, CNP, Winona Health Dermatology</em>
A spot that wasn’t there before. A mole that looks a little different. It’s easy to second guess, but those small changes are worth paying attention to.
A simple monthly skin check can help you get familiar with what’s normal for you. Look over your entire body, including your back, scalp, palms, soles and between your toes. Use a mirror for hard-to-see areas, or ask someone you trust to help. And of course, offer to do the same for them.
If you notice a mole or spot, the ABCDE rule can help you decide next steps. It outlines the warning signs of melanoma, a serious type of skin cancer that should be treated as soon as possible:
<ul>
<li><strong>A – Asymmetry:</strong> One half of the spot is unlike the other half.</li>
<li><strong>B – Border:</strong> The spot has an irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined border.</li>
<li><strong>C – Color:</strong> The spot has varying colors from one area to the next, such as shades of tan, brown or black, or areas of white, red, or blue.</li>
<li><strong>D – Diameter:</strong> While melanomas are usually greater than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), when diagnosed, they can be smaller.</li>
<li><strong>E – Evolving:</strong> The spot looks different from the rest or is changing in size, shape, or color.</li>
</ul>
If you notice a mole or other spot on your skin with any of the warning signs above or that:
<ul>
<li>Is changing or might look different than before.</li>
<li>Is somewhat painful, itchy or bleeds easily.</li>

Schedule an appointment as soon as possible. We will get you in without the wait, often with same day appointments.
<strong>What to expect during a skin check</strong>
If there’s a specific spot of concern, that can be the focus. A full-body exam is also an option.
For a full-body exam, you’ll change into a gown – leaving undergarments on if you prefer. We will carefully look at your skin from scalp to soles using a dermatoscope—a small handheld tool that helps see details more clearly.
If a spot needs a closer look, a photo may be taken for your record. In some cases, a small sample (biopsy) may be taken after numbing the area and sent for evaluation. We’ll contact you with the results and to discuss any follow-up care if necessary.
As with other health-related issues, when it comes to caring for your skin, the best decision is to be proactive in getting issues checked out early – before they become more difficult to treat.
Changes in your skin are worth paying attention to. Not every spot is serious, but it is worth checking. A simple guide to checking skin, understanding what to watch for, and knowing when it is time to be seen is available at <a href="https://www.winonahealth.org/services/specialty-care/dermatology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">winonahealth.org/derm</a>.
Have a concern? Give us a call. We will help you get in quickly, often the same day. To schedule an appointment with the Winona Health Dermatology department, call <a href="tel:5074577674">507.457.7674</a>.

As a Family Medicine provider, I have many conversations that begin the same way:
“I just need to lose some weight.”
What I often hear underneath that statement is something deeper.
“I’m tired all the time.”
“I’m worried about my blood pressure.”
“I don’t sleep well.”

It’s about energy. Blood pressure. Blood sugar. Mobility. Confidence. Long-term health. It’s about feeling well in your everyday life.
That’s why the Winona Health Weight and Wellness Clinic was established — a program designed to focus on overall health, not simply the scale.
<strong>We focus on the whole you</strong>
This program takes a holistic, team-based approach to care. Rather than focusing on one strategy or one appointment, we address
<ul>
<li>Nutrition</li>
<li>Movement</li>
<li>Stress and sleep</li>
<li>Behavioral health</li>
<li>Chronic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure</li>
</ul>
These pieces are connected, and lasting change happens when they are treated that way. Our goal isn’t appearance. It’s better health outcomes.
<ul>
<li>Reduce your blood sugar</li>
<li>Lower your blood pressure</li>
<li>Move more comfortably</li>
<li>Sleep better</li>
<li>Stay independent longer</li>
</ul>
<strong>A sustainable approach to weight loss</strong>
If you’re looking for quick fixes or unrealistic promises — this isn’t that. This is steady, medically guided progress with a team behind you. No shame. No extremes. No traveling elsewhere for care. Just thoughtful, coordinated support from providers you already know and trust.
Your plan works alongside your primary care provider, not separate from it, so if you’re managing diabetes, heart disease, joint pain, or other conditions, everything stays connected.
<strong>What to expect</strong>
The Weight and Wellness Clinic uses an interdisciplinary care team model. Each plan is personalized, but here’s a general overview:
<strong>Provider visit</strong>
Your initial visit includes a comprehensive history review, discussion of past weight loss attempts, data collection, and possibly lab work. Follow-up visits focus on progress, challenges, and medication management if appropriate.
<strong>Pharmacist support</strong>
Available to answer medication questions and help navigate insurance coverage.
<strong>Therapists</strong>
Help you identify realistic goals, overcome barriers, manage expectations, and build long-term strategies for maintaining progress. We talk about readiness for change, coping skills, and even setting boundaries when needed.
<strong>Dietitian</strong>
Provides individualized nutrition therapy and guidance to support sustainable weight loss.
<strong>Exercise support</strong>
Your movement journey begins in our Cardiac Rehabilitation Department, where you’ll be introduced to safe, foundational exercise and guided movement. From there, we’ll help you transition into a personalized program designed to support your lifestyle, goals and long-term well-being.
<strong>Program eligibility</strong>
The program is designed for adults age 18 and older with a Body Mass Index greater than 35 who receive care from a Winona Health primary care provider. Motivation and consistent participation are essential. Motivation is listed for a reason. Long-term change requires commitment and consistency — and we’re here to support you through both. Regular attendance at scheduled visits is essential for success.
<strong>Will I need medication?</strong>
Not everyone requires weight loss medication. That decision is made together during your provider visits and depends on your health history, other medications, and insurance coverage.
<strong>What happens after I reach my goals?</strong>
Most patients remain in the program for 12–18 months. Once goals are met, we transition you to a long-term maintenance plan so the progress you’ve worked hard for continues.
If you’re interested in bariatric surgery, we can also discuss referrals and next steps.
<strong>Let’s talk about insurance</strong>
Every insurance plan is different, and many provide some coverage for weight and wellness services. If you’re unsure what your plan includes, our Patient Resource Center can walk you through it before you begin. They’re located on the first floor of the clinic and offer free support to help you understand your benefits, potential costs, and available community resources. You can also call 507.457.7632 to speak with a Patient Resource Specialist. We want you to feel informed and comfortable every step of the way.
Losing weight may be the reason someone starts this journey. Improving overall health — and maintaining it — should be the reason you continue the journey.

Dermatologist Dr. Weaver shares simple tips to help families stay sun-safe this season. Whether it is a day on the trails, time at the park with the kids, or relaxing by the river, sunscreen should be part of the routine. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still cause skin damage.
<strong>Q: Who should wear sunscreen?</strong>
A: Everyone. Kids, teens, adults, and grandparents all benefit from daily protection. Making it part of the routine helps make it easy. Keep sunscreen by the door, in your car or in your backpack for easy access.
<strong>Q: What should I look for when buying sunscreen?</strong>
A: Look for these must-haves:
<ul>
<li>SPF 30 or higher (SPF 30 lip balm is also helpful for older kids and adults).</li>
<li>Broad-spectrum protection, meaning it protects against both UV-A (aging) and UV-B (burning) rays.</li>
</ul>
</div></div></div><div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-36 fusion_builder_column_1_3 1_3 fusion-flex-column"><div class="fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column"><div class="fusion-image-element "><span class=" fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-16 hover-type-none"><img decoding="async" width="240" height="288" title="Weaver_RGB_240x288" src="https://www.winonahealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Weaver_RGB_240x288.jpg" class="img-responsive wp-image-135056" srcset="https://www.winonahealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Weaver_RGB_240x288-200x240.jpg 200w, https://www.winonahealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Weaver_RGB_240x288.jpg 240w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 240px" alt=""></span></div><div class="fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep"></div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-27">Chad Weaver, MD, Dermatology

A: The best sunscreen is the one that gets used!
Lotions are great for full coverage, especially for younger kids. Best for dry skin and face coverage.
Sticks work well for faces, especially around eyes and quick touch-ups.
Gels are ideal for oily skin and for hair-covered areas.
Sprays are convenient for busy families but should be applied carefully and rubbed in for even coverage. Don’t spray near the face—spray into your hands first, then apply.
Dermatology provider Erin Hanson, CNP, also recommends powder sunscreen for hair parts and quick touch-ups because it is easy to carry in a bag or purse.
<strong>Q: When should we apply it?</strong>
A: Apply about 30 minutes before heading outside so it has time to absorb. Reapply every 2 hours, and more often if swimming or sweating. Don’t forget ears, noses, necks, and the tops of feet. Adults should use about an ounce (a shot glass full).
<strong>Q: Why is sunburn such a big deal for kids?</strong>
A: Sunburn is skin damage, and it adds up over time. Just a few serious sunburns in childhood can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. Protection early on makes a difference long term.
<strong>Q: Is sunscreen the only way to protect my skin?</strong>
A: Sunscreen is an important part of sun safety, but it is not the only tool. The best protection comes from using multiple strategies together, especially during long outdoor days.
<strong>Q: Should we wear sun-protective clothing?</strong>
A: Yes. Sun-protective clothing is an easy way to add another layer of protection. Lightweight long-sleeve shirts, hats with wide brims, sunglasses and clothing labeled UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) can help block harmful UV rays. This is especially helpful for kids who are active outside or for longer periods in the sun.
<strong>Q: Does seeking shade really help?</strong>
A: Absolutely. Shade is one of the simplest ways to reduce sun exposure. Sitting under trees, umbrellas, or covered areas can significantly limit UV exposure, especially when the sun’s rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. When possible, combine shade with sunscreen and protective clothing for the best coverage.
<strong>Q: Can we get sun damage even in the car or indoors?</strong>
A: Yes, to some extent. Windows block most UV-B rays (burning), but UV-A rays (aging) can still reach skin. That is why sunscreen can still matter during car rides or time near windows.
<strong>Q: What if I wear makeup or use face creams?</strong>
A: Sunscreen should still be part of your routine. Apply it before your makeup for best protection. Some skincare products, like retinols, vitamin C and certain antibiotics, can make your skin extra sensitive to sun—so protection is key.
<strong>Q: Why is it important to avoid getting sunburned?</strong>
A: A sunburn isn’t just painful—the sun has damaged your skin. Over time, that damage builds up:
<ul>
<li>Increases your risk of skin cancer, including melanoma.</li>
<li>Just one blistering sunburn in childhood or five sunburns total can double your risk of melanoma.</li>
<li>Repeated sunburns also raise the chance of basal and squamous cell cancers.</li>
</ul>
<strong>Q: I haven’t used sunscreen consistently and haven’t had issues, why start now?</strong>
A: Because sun damage is cumulative. It adds up over the years. The good news? It’s never too late to start protecting your skin. Sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer and keeps your skin looking healthier longer.
