Passing of Mr. John E. Reed, Founder and Chairman of Mestek, Inc.

My father and lifelong mentor John E. Reed, founder and Chairman of Mestek, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday morning, May 9^th, 2013 at his home. He died of heart failure due to advanced congestive heart disease.

His wish was to pass quietly in his own bedroom, on his own terms, the same way he had lived his life. Until the end, he never lost his dignity, aplomb, or respect for others. The day before his death he still had a twinkle in his eye and a knowing smile. His devoted nurse Debi Garcia was at his side when he passed Thursday morning.

Mestek was always more than a business to him; it was his life and his creation. It was personal; and he cared deeply at many levels. He was intensely proud of the people who chose Mestek for their careers, our independent representative partners, and the progress of the company. He established a culture for Mestek that he wanted to last for generations beyond his life, his most cherished legacy. Whether visiting manufacturers' representative/dealer partners, customers, in his office, or on the shop floor, the people

He created and maintained Mestek's guiding culture: nonpolitical, practical, respectful, recognizing and rewarding competence, teamwork, and loyalty, recognizing independent representatives and dealers as partners, customer oriented, high integrity, evenhanded and steady leadership, and always looking for ways to improve our partnership and future. This culture will prove durable in good times and bad; it is built to last.

Mestek remains stable and secure. There is no need to sell or merge Mestek, or to change the management in any way. Death taxes are a burden for the Reed family, but not for the company. Mestek remains financially strong, able to invest in R&D, new product development, buildings and capital equipment, acquisitions of compatible businesses and product lines, financially support organic growth, and most importantly invest in people. Our business is as durable as our culture.

John Reed touched many of us in a profound way, those of us who knew him well; he will be long remembered. We can honor his memory by fulfilling his vision: a world-class American manufacturing company, with committed manufacturers' representative and dealer partners, together creating a bright future indeed.

Krasny Kaplan Hex Bundler Rebuild

Krasny Kaplan recently supplied a rebuild of a hex bundling system. The bundling system can handle seamless pipe up to 7-1/2” diameter, 2” wall thickness, in lengths up to 40 feet. The customer has seen expanded business activity related to the energy sector, so the rebuild was particularly time sensitive and had to be contained within preplanned shutdown. Future plans include expanding the maximum length capabilities of the bundler.

Krasny Kaplan is a designer and builder of steel mill material handling equipment. Dahlstrom Supplies Roll Former for Fenestration

Dahlstrom recently supplied a fenestration customer a precision, high speed 360-OF model roll forming machine for the production of laser welded air spacer, used in energy efficient, insulated glass windows and doors. Dahlstrom has provided four of these systems in the last two years, as the use of air spacer for energy efficient doors and windows increases, particularly for the home remodeling sector. The customer’s selected this machine based on its compact design, precision tolerance and quick changeover.

Winpro Roll Forming Machine

Formtek recently supplied a window manufacturer a Winpro S-series roll forming machine. The machine is unique in that it can roll from up to four (4) different geometries without any changeover. Another unique feature is the tooling design, which is capable of forming two (2) identical thicknesses of strip for a given geometry at the same time. This allows the use of various materials with the same tooling design. This feature will enable the customer to utilize scrap from other operations to produce stiffeners for vinyl extrusions. B&K recently supplied their newest version of the Supermill®, the 2DWR+16, to a metal building products manufacturer in Canada. Lamnea Bruk, a manufacturer of flux core wire equipment has chosen the Yoder QVW-150 Forming Mill for integration to their manufacturing system. The Yoder solution will interface with Lamnea's drive system and feeder equipment as an overall Flux Core Wire Production Line, to compliment their industry leading layer winder, no twist coiler, and live block coiler takeup options. Formtek is pleased to announce the promotion of Rick Poots to Service Manager. Rick previously was a Service Technician for 7 years with Formtek's Winpro product line, specializing in fenestration applications. He has serviced machines throughout the world, providing exceptional customer support and technical expertise. His new duties will expand on his over 20 years of manufacturing experience by coordinating service for all product lines.

Bob Shaffer has transitioned to the role of Plant Manager for Formtek, Inc., responsible for the Cleveland and Hill Engineering facilities. He previously served as the Director of Customer Service. In addition to his role in Service at Formtek, Bob has 30 years prior experience as the Engineering Manager at Yoder Manufacturing as well as Engineering positions with Royalton Industries and Loopco, specializing in Roll Forming, Tube Mill and Coil Processing Systems.

New Machining Center

As part of a comprehensive plan to meet or exceed the heightened demands of the roll forming industry, Formtek has taken delivery of a new eight-axis, dual-chuck, machining center for its Cleveland location. This addition, along with the existing CNC equipment will enable Formtek to produce roll tooling more efficiently, by eliminating many of the time consuming steps currently involved in tooling manufacture, while simultaneously increasing the quality and consistency of the tooling produced.

Formtek recently delivered a roll forming system for the manufacture of cable tray components. The pre-punched roll forming system combined the expertise of Rowe press feed equipment, Yoder rafted roll forming machine and Hill Engineering custom hydraulic cutoff system, to provide the customer a high-speed production system for their cable tray components. Yoder Delivers Pipe Mill Entry Equipment

Yoder recently delivered new entry equipment for a customer's existing 6-5/8" Pipe Mill. The new double holddown, double peeler system is an upgrade from the customers original setup. With hands-free threading, the new equipment adds the capability of peeling off top or bottom, to accommodate the burr direction of incoming material and a thickness capacity of 3/8", high-strength steel. B&K Installs Structual Supermill®

B&K recently delivered a 3TSR Supermill® System to Brazil as well as Canada. The 3TSR can produce flange heights up to 3" for both track and stud components. The flange heights are independently adjustable, without tooling change, from 1" track through 3" stud and track. Web widths are adjustable from 2½" through 14". The system's product range spans light gauge (0.015") through structural (0.105"). With 300 FPM production rates, thanks to patented rotary punch, shear, as well as the quick changeover of the Supermill gauge technology, the 3TSR is the most versatile, high-production framing system available. Yoder Manufacturing of Cleveland, Ohio, a member of the Formtek Group, has developed a new version of its W-10S/W-15S Reducing Tube Mill System to meet the needs of small diameter appliance refrigeration and automotive fuel line tubing. The Yoder W-10S/W-15S can produce ½” diameter tube and reduce a range of finish diameters and wall thicknesses down to 3/16”. The reducing section is independently adjustable, for 3/16” to 1/2” finish diameters. The versatility of this reducing configuration, recently updated with full digital controls, decreases changeover time and improves repeatability of setups. Additional upgrades of the mill enable sizing of tubes up to 1” diameter, along with its reducing capabilities. All of this is now available with CE certification for use in Europe.
