Remember the introduction to Mivva Box I did a while back? Well, it's finally time for me to review my first ever (official) Mivva Box! :D I had previously won a Mivva Box from a giveaway, but did not review it as it was already a backdated box by the time I received it. >_<

Earlier this month, I received the May 2013 Mivva Box to review, which is also a special edition for Mother's Day. :) Naturally, the items inside the box are curated to suit the Mother's Day theme.

I love how the info card had a really sweet and meaningful quote on the front. 世上只有妈妈好~

A very thoughtful card and pretty tea cup was the first thing that I saw in the box. My mum is a great fan of roses (as am I) so it was perfect for her. ｡◕‿◕｡

I tried the sleeping mask overnight, and it seems to work quite well to keep my skin moisturized all night, but the spot serum made me experience some minor breakouts after using. >_<

I very rarely use body scrubs, so I can't say how well this product works, but winning the Harper's Bazaar 2011 Best Body Scrub award has got to count for something, right? :D Gonna try this out soon.

This is one of the products I'm most eager to try, because it's rose-scented and a cleanser in powder form. My first ever (proper) cleansing product was also a powder cleanser, so you can say this product brings back some good memories. :P

"This botox-like cream is a double functional cream for whitening and deep wrinkles." Definitely a product for ladies with aging skin concerns. (¬‿¬)

Claire Organics Handmade Soap - Guinness Stout

Claire handmade soaps are made using fresh and natural high-quality ingredients so it is gentle on skin. They have various 'flavours' of soap, including mulberry yoghurt, aloe vera shea butter, evening primrose, etc. This Guinness Stout soap has revitalising and anti-acne properties. :)

I'm pretty pleased with the contents of this May 2013 Mivva Box. Most, if not all, the items inside are great for mums and daughters alike, as well as introduced us to some new brands and products. The card and tea cup were a nice touch to highlight the special occasion.

Canmake Spring 2013 Workshop X International Beauty Expo 2013

Have you heard about the International Beauty Expo (IBE) 2013 held at KLCC? I attended the one last year, and it's as big (if not bigger) as ever this year. It's one of the most comprehensive exhibitions and sourcing platforms for beauty, hair, nail, cosmetics and spa professionals. I was invited by Canmake to attend their Spring 2013 workshop at IBE 2013 with several other beauty bloggers, and boy, was I glad I was there! .｡.:*☆ (⌒▽⌒)☆

Canmake is a Japanese cosmetics company that was established in 1985, and is used by teenagers, office workers and professional makeup artists in Japan as all over the world. Their concept of "cute, high quality and reasonable prices" have made their products a hit in many countries, particularly Asia, and they have 831 outlets worldwide. In Japan alone, they have a few thousand outlets! Σ(゜ロ゜;)

The makeup artist started by using the Smooth Skin Primer, Smooth Liquid Foundation and Marshmallow Finish Powder (all 3 are new products!) to create a flawless base for both models.

After that, she proceeded to apply the eye makeup, followed by cheeks, and finally the lips. She demonstrated how to use the various Canmake products to achieve both Pink Sweet and Orange Natural styles, and the results are really pretty! :) The makeup trend now is the kira-kira (sparkly) 。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。eyes look, so both eyeshadow palettes used have shades that contain pink pearl pigments to give off that sparkly effect.

Most people believe that pink makeup is more suitable for those with fair skin, and orange makeup for tanned skin, but the host assured us that both looks can suit either types. So for us girls living in sunny countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, etc, don't worry, we can play with colours too! (＾▽＾)

There are also a few more items like the Shading Powder, Jewel Star Eyes and Powder Eyebrow that I didn't manage to snap pictures of, but are part of the array of products used to achieve both makeup looks. After the demonstration and testing session was over, I requested the sensei to teach me how to do contouring, and she very kindly showed me how as well as let me try it out myself. :D

After the workshop at the Canmake booth, I took a walk around the expo hall to see if there were any interesting items or good deals to grab. XD

I came across this booth at the Korea Pavilion, and couldn't help but be attracted by their pop art design facial mask packs. The company is called SNP, and they have all sorts of skin care products in addition to the masks.

The masks in the top photo were RM9 each, while the 4 (different design) at the bottom were RM6 each. The lady at the booth told us (I bumped into a friend and we were walking around) that their masks were widely sold in Korea but have yet to enter the Malaysian market. I'm on a mask craze lately so I decided to grab a few to try. (◠‿◠)

IBE 2013 haul

Here's my IBE 2013 haul from yesterday! Bought some nail art stuff, a couple of nail polishes from Canmake, and 3 masks from SNP.

I'm glad to be able to visit the International Beauty Expo again this year as media (hehehe) and learn more about makeup and cosmetics. If you're a beauty junkie like me looking for some good beauty deals, or just a casual consumer interested in personal grooming, why not drop by the expo and take a look? Admission is free, and you'll be able to see lots of new brands and haul some bargains (masks, anyone?) from the expo. Tomorrow (21st May 2013) is the last day, and IBE is from 11am - 7pm at KLCC, so there's still time!

Review: Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Red Porcelain

Mention pin-up girl, and the first thing that comes to mind is the colour red. Not just any red, but a fiery red-red that just oozes confidence and sexiness.

That's exactly the kind of red that is Maybelline's Color Sensational lipstick in Red Porcelain. Now, I'm definitely a pink lipstick kind of girl, and I've never tried such a bright, vibrant red lipstick before in my entire life, so this is a first for me. (⊙﹏⊙)

This is what the lipstick tube looks like after unwrapping the outer plastic layer. The cover is a bright transparent red that corresponds to the colour of the lipstick inside (as do the other lipsticks from the ColorSensational range). Too bad that the pretty black flower motif isn't printed on the tube. :(

The bottom of the lipstick, where the lipstick shade, number and manufacturing date are indicated. Red Porcelain is RP41.

Red Porcelain is a vibrant cool-toned red that claims to suit every skin tone. To me, it seems to lean slightly orange, making it more vibrant than any of the usual reds. I guess that's what they call a true classic red, right?

Try out this lipstick and you will know the true meaning of opaque. Seriously, Red Porcelain is hands down the most pigmented lipstick I've ever tried! Two swipes is enough to achieve the result you see in the lip swatches above. ∑(O_O；) It is super glossy too, so you don't need any lip gloss at all.

However, you will most likely need to use a lip brush to touch up the edges, as bright red shades like this can get messy. ^^;;

I am not one to use red lipstick on a daily basis, as I feel that it's too bold for me, but this one is perfect for special occasions. :3 The lipstick is very creamy and moisturizing, and gives a super glossy, shiny effect so you don't even need gloss. Plus, it's super long-lasting, and leaves behind a gorgeous red stain even after eating and drinking. This is one lipstick that you don't need to touch up!

"Awesome Wholesome" is the theme for this month's VanityTrove Malaysia. I, for one, am not really the type to go for organic skincare products, mainly because I stick with my usual skincare routine and prefer trying out all types of cosmetics (not many are organic).

The first thing that hit me when I opened this month's trove was the scent. It smelled very fresh and herbal, reminiscent of aromatherapy spas.

Without further ado, let's take a look at what's inside the trove!

Pure South Organic Body Lotion with Fresh Goat's Milk (deluxe sample size, approx 50ml)

Scented with native Australian plant extracts and pure essentials, this lotion is suitable for both face and body, and has a light, non-greasy texture that is easily absorbed. I'm not quite sure how to describe the scent (besides using the word organic), but it's nice if you like that sorta thing. (^_^;)

Schwarzkopf Essensity Natural Shine Serum (full-size, 50ml)

I can never pronounce this brand name correctly. (╥_╥) This serum contains a combination of organic essences of sesame and olive oils to improve quality of hair. Say goodbye to frizzy, flyaway hair and hello to smooth, shiny hair! Haven't tried this out yet, as I am still using this hair oil to nurse my hair back to health, lol.

Avene Thermale Spring Water (50ml)

This is probably the only product in the trove that I have seen and heard of, but never tried before. This face mist is suitable even for sensitive skin, and helps to soothe and soften skin. Can be used as often as necessary, which is great for ladies who study/work in air-conditioned areas. :)

Heaven on Earth Essential Oil - Lavender (sample size, 1.5ml)

This essential oil is made of steam distilled Lavandula Angustifolia flowers of French origin, and can help to promote sleep, balance tone skin, reduce anxiety/aches and soothe insect bites. I usually use essential oils with an aroma burner bowl, but the brochure also suggests that you can mix a few drops with 100ml of water, place in a spray bottle and use it as a room refresher. You can even spray it on your pillow to aid sleep! Definitely gonna try that out. :D

Tilley Goat's Milk Soap (full size, single)

This wonderfully creamy goat's milk soap bar is chemical free and enriched with skin conditioning ingredients such as organic shea butter, organic jojoba oil and organic cocoa butter. One look at this soap bar, and I knew my mum would love using it. (◕‿◕✿)

There were also vouchers from HiShop, Mary Chia and TNS Skinlab in this month's trove. :)

VanityTrove Malaysia "Awesome Wholesome" May edition

I must say that this month's VanityTrove Malaysia is definitely a success. Even though I'm not really into organic products, I appreciate the variety of different brands and items in the trove. There were even 3 full-sized products, which is really rare in a beauty box. All the items also fit the wholesome organic theme really well, which I give two thumbs up! d(^_^)b

505 - Malaysia's Big Day

Today is the day Malaysia decides her government for the next 5 years. 5 years that can drastically change our beautiful nation, for better or for worse.

By the time I finish typing this post, the polling stations will have closed (5.00 pm) and everybody will be waiting with bated breath for the results to start trickling in.

Today is the first time I'm exercising my voting rights as a Malaysian citizen. I don't think I'm a particularly politically involved person. Sure, I do share the occasional GE13 post on Facebook, and laugh at the various "Ini karilah!" jokes, but that's about it.

The thing is, today reminds me a lot of a few other notable days in Malaysia's recent history. Remember the Bersih 2.0 rally in 2011? Or last year's badminton finals for the Olympics? Scrolling through my Facebook news feed, I am strongly reminded of these events that made Malaysia a topic of conversation, both online and offline, among strangers and countrymen alike.

Why, you ask? Just one word: unity. It is during times like this that I truly appreciate how our countrymen, despite the differences in culture, race, language, can come together to fight for something that we believe in. How we can all work together to achieve a common goal, and to protect something that we love (whether we realize it or not) - Malaysia.

Rain or shine, ain't gonna stop people from voting!

Just like on the day of the Bersih rally, or during the badminton match between Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei, the support and encouragement of citizens from all walks of life is touching indeed. Scrolling through Facebook, we can see so many photos, stories, messages that inspire us to hope for a better tomorrow. (All the cries of foul play, however, is another topic entirely, and will probably result in a full-on rant, which isn't the point of this post, so yeah. Not gonna go there.)

These are just some really amazing things from various parts of the country that were shared on Facebook.

Supporters from Penang staying back after voting to make sure the polls stayed clean.

More people from other places protecting their right to a fair and clean election.

This lady who came to vote on her wedding day (in her beautiful wedding gown, no less)!

Elderly voters who were bedridden but determined to cast their vote.

Even Nik Aziz, the Menteri Besar of Kelantan, has to line up just like anybody else to cast his vote.

Lots of overseas citizens also came back to cast their vote, or voted via post, and voiced their thoughts on the election. Even our local celebrities/singers who are now based in other parts of Asia also came back to vote! Remember, every vote counts! :)

Now, the only thing we can do is wait for the results, and hope for a better Malaysia. I wonder how this election will turn out, with the eyes of the global media on our little country. *fingers crossed*

Review: Catrice Made To Stay Longlasting Eyeshadow in 070 Mauvie Star

Remember my beauty swap post from last year? Well, the cream eyeshadow I'm reviewing in this post is one of the items I received from the swap. :D (I know, it's been ages since that post.)

Catrice Made To Stay Longlasting Eyeshadow

Catrice Made To Stay Longlasting Eyeshadows are said to be good dupes for Chanel's famous Apparence Illusion d'Ombre Eyeshadows. This particular shade, 070 Mauvie Star, is said to resemble the Chanel Apparence Illusion d'Ombre in #83 Illusoire, but I can't compare them since I don't have the latter (nor the moolah to buy it lol).

Catrice Made To Stay Longlasting Eyeshadow packaging

Compared to the Maybelline Color Tattoos, this Catrice Made To Stay Longlasting Eyeshadow is slightly smaller in diameter but almost twice the height of the Color Tattoos. It also has 5g (20% more product) in comparison to the Color Tattoos' 4g. The pot itself is made from sturdy, heavy clear plastic with a solid black screw lid. No worries about this baby shattering upon impact (or messing up your cosmetics bag)!

Love the soft, creamy texture

The eyeshadow is very soft and creamy to the touch, and blends out really very well. It is quite pigmented, but if you over-blend it, the pretty grey-mauve colour will disappear and you'll be left with the glittery shimmer. I recommend layering it to get a stronger colour, and blending it out if you want a subtle shimmery look. :)

Swatches (2 swipes)

It's a great eyeshadow for both day and night, as you can layer it for a deeper shade. My camera couldn't capture the fine shimmer properly (refer top swatch), which is really pretty. Mauvie Star can look grey, brown, mauve, or taupe, depending on different angles and lighting conditions, which makes it a very unique eyeshadow shade. ♥

Catrice Made To Stay Longlasting Eyeshadow in 070 Mauvie Star

It's no wonder that cream eyeshadows are becoming the rage among beauty junkies lately. They typically wear longer on the lids, don't require a primer and have better colour payoff compared to powder eyeshadows, plus they're easy to carry around without making a mess in your bag.

Review: L'Oréal Professionnel Couture Edition Mythic Oil by Dilek Hanif

It's not often that I do a hair product review, but this is one item I just need to share with my lovely readers! My hair is in serious need of some major TLC, so this review opportunity came at just the right time. So, who is Dilek Hanif?
Dilek Hanif is a Turkish fashion designer who has been introducing her collections in Paris since 2004, and conquering the international fashion stage with her distinctive aesthetic approach, half-way between the elegance of the Ottoman culture and the glamour of contemporary style. Today Dilek is a designer-entrepreneur that conveys the values and the tradition of her country with great energy and talent, and is thus recognized as one of the most representative figures of modern Turkey and of the valuable creative connection between the East and the West.

Take a look at some of her fashion designs, which inspired the creation of the Couture Edition Mythic Oil. My favourite is the short black dress! (✿ ♥‿♥)

What inspired Dilek Hanif when designing this special Couture Edition Mythic Oil?
"My inspiration came from my SS 2012 Couture collection presented in Paris Fashion Week. I based the design on the colours and patterns that I used in my collection. I maximized black and gold shades, playing also with transparencies to gain on elegance, mystery, femininity and modernity but keeping the oriental inspiration, which is also a key identity sign of Mythic Oil. I decided to add a bracelet of Ottoman inspiration for the product to be even more luxurious."

The word "luxurious" certainly came to mind when I first saw the gorgeous black and gold box nestled inside the elegant black and gold paper bag. (☆▽☆)

The outer box packaging is made from plastic, and has the signature Dilek Hanif Ottoman-inspired design embossed on it. There is a small round clear window which enables you to see the bottle inside, and the unique bracelet included with the couture edition Mythic Oil.

The bottle which contains the Mythic Oil itself is made from plastic, and holds 125ml of product. The special bracelet is tied at the top of the bottle, where it can be seen through the outer box's clear window. :)

Here's a closer look at the pretty bracelet. The charm itself is very thin and light, and comes with an adjustable rope bracelet.

The Mythic Oil is a clear liquid, not golden (that's the bottle colour)

The bottle has a pump dispenser, which is my favourite type for liquid products. In the photo above, you can see the amount of product that is dispensed from one pump. The oil itself is clear; the golden tinge is the bottle colour itself.

Now for the results! Pics or it didn't happen, right? o(｀ω´*)o
Do note that my hair is thick, naturally wavy (which makes for bad hair days more often than not), frizzy and been through several dye jobs, thus rather dry and damaged especially at the ends. (⌒_⌒;)

Instructions: Depending on hair type, dispense 1-2 pumps into your hand and apply to dry or damp hair. I use around 3 pumps for my hair.

I applied the oil in the afternoon, on dry hair. 1st application is before I washed my hair at night.

First application

The pictures below are taken the next day after the 1st application. I washed my hair the night before, after the 1st application the previous afternoon.

2nd and 3rd application of Mythic Oil

The oil, which is a blend of avocado oil and grape seed oil, among other nourishing ingredients, smells very nice. It is easily absorbed into hair, has a very nice lightweight texture, and does not feel oily or sticky on the hands. I could definitely feel my hair become softer and look more glossy just after the first application! (*⌒∇⌒*)

Here are some DIY steps to your very own Mythic Blow Dry:
Step 1: Section hair into eight sections after shampooing and tower drying.
Step 2: Warm your Mythic Oil blend in the palms of your hands. Apply to each section, starting from the ends and working your way to the crown.
Step 3: Leave for two minutes to allow it to penetrate before blow-drying. Style as usual. Hair has never looked this gorgeous, healthy and shiny!

The Verdict?

I am absolutely in love with this Mythic Oil! (≧∇≦)♥ My hair hasn't felt so smooth and silky, not to mention looking glossy and healthy, in a long time, so I'm really looking forward to some "good hair days" ahead.

The details at the back are all written in Hangul though, so I can't understand a word of it. ^^;;

As a self-confessed lip product lover, I'm really glad to see this Bloop LV Lip Gloss (shade 215) in my welcome box. The simple tube packaging contains 2.5g of lip gloss, and retails at RM28.00. There are 8 shades of lip gloss to choose from, but I'm glad they sent me this one because it's a pretty pink gloss with tiny pink and purple shimmer. (*⌒∇⌒*)ﾉ

Timeless Truth Instantaneous Brightening Cooling Mask

The mask contains a generous 25ml of essence, which is more than enough to fully soak the mask sheet. There's also enough leftover essence inside the packet (after taking out the mask) for you to apply on your arms and legs.

Here's the ingredients list and instructions on the back of the packet. :D The original instructions are printed in Chinese, since it's made in Taiwan.

The mask sheet is fairly thin, and has tiny holes all over it to enable your skin to 'breathe' and help in absorbing the essence. As you can see from the inset, the mask sheet is well soaked with the essence with plenty leftover for the body.

The scary mask face photo! (HAHAHAHA) The mask fits well on my face, and feels very fresh and cool upon application. However, I the eye holes seem to be slightly too big (I find this to be a common problem with most sheet masks though). As this Instantaneous Brightening Cooling Mask is also known as the 'ice mask', it has a very cool feeling when you put it on. For an even cooler mask experience, I'd recommend you place the mask packet in the fridge about 15 minutes before using. I did that, and it feels totally cool and refreshing indeed! (≧∇≦)

Overall, I liked how it feels very cool and refreshing, and it does help to moisturize my skin. The mask it self fits quite well on my face, and the generous amount of essence makes sure that my arms and legs also get some well-deserved treatment as well when I'm chilling with the mask. :D

Review: Lioele Dollish Lipstick in #9 Bordeaux Wine

Remember my Lioele mascara review? Well, earlier this year I was lucky enough to win this Lioele lipstick from Sara's giveaway, so I'm gonna test it out and share my thoughts with you. :D

#9 Bordeaux Wine

The Lioele Dollish Lipstick shade I received was #9 Bordeaux Wine. Wine red, plum red - I can never really tell the difference between these 2 shades, so I'll just go along with the lipstick shade name and call it a wine red lipstick. Sara described it as a deep raspberry shade, and I guess that's a pretty accurate description.

The colour theme for the Lioele Dollish Lipstick packaging is primarily metallic pink and classic black. The lipstick tube is matte black with a metallic pink band in the middle, and with the words "Lioele Dollish Lipstick" printed in light pink on the cover. It feels like holding a MAC lipstick, but very much lighter.

Removing the black cover will reveal a pink and silver inner tube, printed with the signature Lioele carriage logo. It looks very girly but elegant. :)

This particular shade is very pigmented, as you can see from the swatches above. 1 swipe is good enough for a burst of colour on the lips, but you can add a couple more layers to get a deeper and richer colour.

This is how it looks like on the lips. It's actually a deeper shade than shown in the swatches, but you get the idea that it is very pigmented, and true to the colour in the tube.

This Lioele Dollish Lipstick has a very creamy texture, and glides smoothly onto the lips in one swipe. It has a faintly sweet scent, which dissipates very quickly after application. The colour is very pigmented indeed, and lasts around 4-5 hours with minimal eating and drinking. One good thing about this lipstick, besides its vibrant colour, is that it feels very moisturizing and doesn't dry out my lips.

Nerd look (O-O)

The Lioele Dollish Lipstick range retails at RM43.90, and can be purchased from the MyLioele online store, or at selected counters in Parkson. Made in Korea.

✓ Pros: Smooth and creamy texture, pigmented, moisturizing (does not dry out lips), long-lasting, wide variety of colours, nice packaging.
✗ Cons: Has faintly sweet scent, slightly higher price than drugstore brands.

Review: Tony Moly Luminous Pure Aura CC Cream

I can never get enough of Korean cosmetics. They're effective, affordable (usually), come in the cutest packaging ever, and are usually endorsed by famous Korean artists. Good job, Tony Moly, for choosing JYJ as your ambassadors ~~and thus earning you a bunch of money from fangirls like me~~. （。-＿-。）

Anyway, I decided to jump on the CC (which stands for 'color change') cream bandwagon and try out the Tony Moly Luminous Aura CC Cream with SPF30 PA++. I bought it online via Qoo10 Malaysia, and my order - which included 2 free samples - arrived safely within 2 weeks. Not bad, considering that I opted for free shipping. (¬‿¬)

The packaging for this CC cream (50ml) is a simple white plastic bottle with a black cap, and the words "Pure Aura" embossed in silver on the surface. The bottle, although made from plastic, feels very sturdy and the cap also closes firmly so you don't have to worry about it accidentally falling off.

The CC cream bottle comes with a pump dispenser, which is my preferred packaging for all liquid/cream products. It's more hygienic, and you can control the amount you want to use.

The CC cream (before blending) is a white colour with tiny micro-capsules. Once blended out, the cream adapts to your natural skin colour, giving your skin a natural dewy finish. This CC cream claims to have 7-in-1 effects, which are sunscreen + whitening + wrinkle repair + radiance + moisture + primer + base make-up. Sounds pretty amazing, right?

Cheek: before and after comparison

Above is the before and after comparison photo. My skin looks less dry and skin tone is also slightly evened out after application, although the blemishes are still quite obvious. The main difference I can feel is the moisture - it really does have good moisturizing effect, so I'd definitely recommend this for those with dry skin, but those with oily skin might have to stay away, or at least skip the moisturizer step. =/

SPF30 PA++

One thing I love about this CC cream is that it has SPF30! C'mon, we all know that UV rays are harmful to our precious skin, so any makeup products that have UV protection are always a welcome addition. :D

This is after I've added concealer, foundation and setting powder ^^;;

To be honest, I expected this CC cream to provide more coverage, so I was kinda disappointed to discover that it works more like a base/primer. Nevertheless, I like that it has SPF30, and it does work to moisturize skin and even out skin tone, so I can just touch up some concealer and compact powder on days that I don't feel like going all out with makeup. On good skin days, the fact that the cream blends effortlessly with my skin tone means that I don't have to put on any extra foundation or BB cream.

This cream is a moisturizer that is supposed to help smoothen wrinkles, tighten pores and brighten your complexion. Sounds like a pretty good product, just that I feel that a sunblock would be more suitable for this month's trove instead of a moisturizing cream.

Kila Doll Red Wine Q10 Mask (1 piece)

I enjoy using masks these days to boost moisture and also to relax after a long day, so I'm glad to see this in my trove. I've heard of this brand before but never tried it. Made in Taiwan.

Ever since I found out that Kinokuniya often has exclusive freebies with various magazines, I've always stalked their magazine section to see if they have anything good for that particular month. This month yielded some pretty amazing freebies (not all from Kinokuniya).

ViVi Malaysia (English edition) April issue; RM 10

The first magazine GWP was an unexpected surprise. I'd been searching high and low for the April issue of ViVi Malaysia (English edition) purely because it had TVXQ on the cover. Finally found it last Tuesday at MyNews @ 1 Utama, and the cashier opened up an unopened box of NeuLa pimple gel to get me my GWP.

Second GWP is from the April issue of Total Film magazine, which comes with an Ozaki iPhone 5 leather casing with card slot worth RM119. This one is a Kinokuniya exclusive, only 1 copy per customer.

Honestly, this is one of the best GWPs I've come across so far. Ozaki phone cases are not cheap, and this one would be perfect for my iPhone 4S, even though it's meant for the iPhone 5. I chose the one in black (looks silver in some lights) because it has this really cool lightning pattern.

Harper's Bazaar Malaysia 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition box; RM 15

This. This is one is a monster. Weighing in at a hefty 3kg, the special Harper's Bazaar 10th Anniversary x Lanvin ME collector's edition box is definitely a GWP to be reckoned with. These are sold in limited amounts at selected bookstores, and I managed to grab a couple at Kinokuniya last week, 1 for me and 1 for my friend. (Lugging two 3kg boxes back home via LRT is no easy feat, I tell ya!)

This collector's edition of Harper's Bazaar magazine carries the bulk of the weight, with a whopping 500 glossy pages. It also includes a mini beauty look book of beauty items to look out for S/S 2013.

More importantly, the freebies! The main attraction of the super huge box is actually the miniature Lanvin ME EDP (top). The collector's edition box also comes with a transparent plastic Harper's Bazaar cosmetic pouch (middle), and a hardcover notebook (bottom). My notebook was slightly damaged while trying to take it out of the pouch. >_<

In non-magazine-related freebies, thanks to My Women Stuff, I managed to pick up my free Diorsnow deluxe trial kit from Isetan KLCC yesterday!

Getha x Lee Hom x ChurpChurp Contest

So about a week ago, I joined this Instagram contest by Getha and ChurpChurp to try my luck at winning a pair of tickets to Lee Hom's Music-Man II World Tour concert in Malaysia, or at least a Getha pillow.

The Instagram contest was held over 3 weeks, with winners being announced each week. I didn't join the first 2 weeks, but somehow I suddenly felt very semangat to join the 3rd week's contest, because the task was just to take a picture related to Lee Hom.

So I literally dug out all the Lee Hom albums and items I'd collected over the years and started taking photos. =/

Food Review: Kelantan Delights @ Sooka Sentral

As a half-Kelantanese who has had the honour of tasting authentic Kelantanese food since young, I can honestly say that it is quite difficult to find good Kelantanese food in the Klang Valley. My mum, especially, is very picky about food from her hometown, and usually prefers to cook it herself despite the tedious preparations required. ^^;;

Nevertheless, sometimes we just need an off day to just enjoy good, authentic food without slaving away in the kitchen half the day. This is when the discovery of Kelantan Delights comes in - no more hours of preparations for mum! :D

I recently had the opportunity to organize a gathering for the Nuffnang Tastebuddies, and join them for a food review session at Kelantan Delights' Sooka Sentral branch. The place is decorated beautifully with elements of traditional Kelantanese art and design, yet with a modern vibe that will appeal to urbanites.

We were introduced to Kelantan Delights by Mr Saify, the managing director of Kelantan Delights. Subsequent introductions and explanations of dishes were made my Mr Hatta, the manager of the Sooka Sentral branch. :) All the staff at Kelantan Delights were very friendly and courteous, which definitely made a good impression on the bloggers.

'Well, what about the food?' you must be wondering. Here's what we tried out that day:

Tomyam Kelapa Muda

This was one of the appetisers of the day - Tomyum Kelapa Muda (coconut tomyum soup). They were served in tiny shot glasses for us to sample, but the actual a la carte one is served in a whole coconut shell, which makes the soup extra fragrant and flavourful. The prawns were fresh, and the tomyum soup had a good spicy kick to whet our appetites.

Sirih Daun Kaduk

The second appetiser was the Sirih Daun Kaduk, which is a 'salad' of sorts with betel leaf as its main ingredient. The edible fried 'wan ton' skins acted as a holder for the betel leaf and condiments inside. Definitely something to tickle your tastebuds before the main course.

Nasi Dagang Gulai Ikan

For the main course, I chose the Nasi Dagang Gulai Ikan. Nasi dagang has always been my favourite Kelantanese dish, so I definitely to try this. The fish was cooked to perfection and seasoned with enough salt to my liking, but the nasi dagang was a little dry, perhaps due to less amount of santan (yes, gotta eat healthy, haha!). The gravy was good too, but might not be spicy enough for those who enjoy a little more ooomph to their curries.

Nasi Kerabu Ayam Percik

This is another choice for the main course - Nasi Kerabu Ayam Percik. Nasi kerabu is essentially a rice dish with lots of vegetables, but this version has ayam percik (another Kelantan specialty) included. The rice gets it blue tinge from a type of flower, so it's natural colouring. I was lucky enough to try some of the chicken, and it was very good indeed, tender and juicy and packed with flavour, especially when consumed with the special gravy.

Laksam

After the rice dishes, everybody was feeling pretty full (the portions were extremely generous) so most of us ordered to share. This is Laksam, which consists of rice flour rolls and fish+santan gravy. They also have a different version of laksam which uses eel blended with the coconut milk, which makes for a stronger tasting gravy. Sounds interesting, eh?

Nasi Tumpang with Ayam Goreng

This is one of the most interesting dishes of the day, called Nasi Tumpang. Traditionally, it is a full-day meal brought by the fishermen/farmers. Alternating layers of rice and condiments are placed inside a banana leaf roll, and they will eat each layer at different times of day (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Pretty ingenious. ;)

Once unwrapped, you can see the 3 different layers inside. You start by eating the wide end, and finish with the narrow end. :D This dish is produced in limited quantities each day at Kelantan Delights (only 15 per day), so it's recommended to order in advance if you don't want to miss it. The fried chicken is optional. It tasted pretty good too, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

Lompat Tikam and Ketupat Sotong

Last but not least, we finally reached the dessert course. The green square and red pulut ball make up Lompat Tikam, while the Ketupat Sotong is the one served in the spoon. The Lompat Tikam is eaten with santan and gula melaka, while the Ketupat Sotong is squid stuffed with glutinous rice and boiled in gula melaka. Both were sweet but not overly so, and were definitely an interesting end to a sumptuous meal.

Thanks to Kelly, I managed to get a pair of invites to the Etude House Beauty Sharing BFF Party at Korea Plaza on 23 March 2013. Ruth and I ~~were too lazy to walk~~ didn't know how to get there from KLCC, so we just took a cab to the place, lol.

We got there slightly after 11 am, and the place was already half packed with guests and bloggers. :D I was really glad to meet Kelly at the entrance, and we quickly took a (rare) photo together before I went off to explore the activities with Ruth.

Ruth and I spent a bit of time just walking around the event area, and it was pretty interesting. Korea Plaza is actually sort of like the hub for the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), so they have lots of information regarding popular and beautiful holiday destinations around South Korea.

We decided to line up for a manicure first, because the queue was getting pretty long. It took more than half an hour for our turn to get a manicure. :(

Right after we got our manicures done, the food was also served, so we went to grab some photos and food. The rice cake was very good (albeit a bit spicy) but the 'sushi' roll was just okay. The tea was nice too.

Review: SAMPAR Glamour Shot Eyes

SAMPAR Paris Glamour Shot Eyes cosmakeup

Continuing from my previous Glamour Shot review, I'll also be introducing the SAMPAR Glamour Shot Eyes under-eye concealer. In a similar vein to the Glamour Shot foundation, this is a transparent under-eye concealer that erases dark circles, brightens dark areas around the eyes and blurs wrinkles and fine lines, all in one minute after application. It also has anti-wrinkles action when used long term.

All of SAMPAR's products are packaged in a very classy and minimalist way. The outer packaging is just a simple glossy pink and white box with a pattern of the Paris skyline at the bottom, while the Glamour Shot is housed in a silver and pale pink tube.

The overall design is reminiscent of a typical mascara packaging. The tube is made from plastic but feels very sturdy and substantial. Me likey. :P

Doe-foot wand applicator

The SAMPAR Glamour Shot Eyes comes with a doe-foot wand for easier and more hygienic application. You can either apply it directly to the under-eye area then blend like you would regular concealer (my preferred method), or swipe a small amount on the back of your hand then dab it around the under-eye area.

The Glamour Shot Eyes itself looks white just like the Glamour Shot foundation, but has a lighter and slightly more watery texture in comparison. This is due to the fact that it is meant to be used specifically for the sensitive eye area, hence it has to be more gentle than its foundation counterpart. It turns transparent when applied evenly around the under-eye area.

How to use SAMPAR Glamour Shot Eyes

It is recommended to moisturize the eye contour prior to application. Using the wand, place 3 dots (I usually just do 1 swipe 'coz I'm lazy like that ^^;;) of the product on the under-eye area, and lightly pat with fingertips. Finish by patting some loose or compact powder, and you're all set! Do note that just like the Glamour Shot foundation, it is not compatible with liquid/cream foundations or concealers.

L: with GSE; R: without GSE

This is just from my first application, and although it might not look like much, the side which has Glamour Shot Eyes actually looks brighter, smoother and slightly lifted (looking more awake). All within ONE minute, as claimed. Needless to say, I was impressed.

I used the Glamour Shot Eyes for 5 consecutive weeks (with a few days break in between) and the results are pretty obvious! Dark circles and puffiness begone! Hello to brighter and more awake-looking eyes! :D

My Verdict?
SAMPAR Glamour Shot Eyes is my go-to product on days when I need to zoom out the door with minimal fuss about makeup. Just a few swipes, pat it into the under-eye area, a swipe of compact powder, a flick of eyeliner and I'm good to go!

✓ Pros: Instant lifting effect,eliminates dark circles, reduces puffiness, smoothens wrinkles and lines, saves time during makeup, has long term anti-wrinkles effect, simple yet effect packaging, doe-foot applicator is easy to use and perfect for application.
✗ Cons: Does not work with liquid/cream foundations and concealers, not recommended for those looking to conceal severe dark circles.

Yup, that's the theme for VanityTrove Malaysia's March 2013 edition. Quote above aside, the word "temptress" always brings to mind images of sultry beauties with seductive red lips, right?

The VanityTrove Malaysia packaging is the same as last month's debut box. It is presented in a sturdy white box that has a pink pull-out drawer. The overall design, although not fancy, is simple, elegant and effective. I do not think they will be changing their box design anytime soon, as it is considered a signature of theirs by now.

There are in total 5 different brands in this month's trove (instead of 4 as listed in the card). To be honest, I am actually kinda disappointed with this month's items. Read on to find out what and why.

Asian Potions Hand and Body Lotion (mini sample jar)

I've never heard of this brand before, which is a good thing. Even though it is listed as Blooming Ginger Body Lotion in the card, the lotion sample itself doesn't have any ginger scent at all. The strongest scent I can detect is jasmine (and roses?), which I personally like. The lotion is very lightweight and does not feel sticky on the skin. :)

Bio-Essence Bird's Nest Bio-Energy Firm & Brighten Eye Cream with SPF 15 (3ml)

This item was not listed in the info card. Nevertheless, I'd glad to have this to try out, as I've been trying to find a good eye cream. The side effects of staring at computer/phone screens 7 days a week. (⌒_⌒;)

Again, another brand I have not heard of before. Sensiplus+ is formulated specially for sensitive skin. The gel tonic is used as a toner after cleansing, and the cream can be used both during the day and night (24 hours).

The 3rd unknown brand, and is the only full-sized item inside the trove. It contains orchid, purple peril and chamomile extracts to help whiten, brighten and moisturize skin. The generous amount of essence (30ml) in each pack ensures that there is enough even for your neck and body.

Last but not least, some vouchers from the brands in this month's trove. To be honest, I seldom (if ever) use these vouchers, as the expiry dates are sometimes too close, or the outlet is not easily accessible (or because it's not payday yet, lol).

There are a total of 6 sample-sized products and 1 full-sized item inside the VanityTrove March edition. Overall, it was a pretty good trove in terms of product availability. However, considering that the theme is "temptress", I would have expected at least a colour cosmetic item of the red varity. Red is, after all, the signature colour of a temptress. Based on the samples, I would consider purchasing the Asian Potion lotion, for its lovely scent and lightweight texture.

Review: SAMPAR Glamour Shot

Well, I've found my solution in SAMPAR Paris' Glamour Shot cosmakeup range. It is a the first ever transparent foundation that corrects wrinkles, gives a matte/soft focus finish, masks skin imperfections and redness, all in one minute after application. It also provides a long-lasting anti-wrinkle effect when used long term.

No wonder celebrities are also using SAMPAR! Gotta look good even when going out for a walk or to buy some groceries, eh?

The Glamour Shot tube comes with a pump dispenser, which is really the most hygienic way to package liquid/serum products, and also ensures that you have control over how much is squeezed out (we don't want to waste any of the precious product!).

The Glamour Shot itself looks white and has a creamy liquid consistency when dispensed, but turns transparent when applied evenly on the face. It is recommended to apply the Glamour Shot as a foundation by smoothing uniformly onto the face from inside to outside. It dries to a matte finish pretty quickly, so using fingers is the best way.

Even though it is labelled as a foundation, it must be noted that this product is not compatible with liquid/cream foundations or concealers. The result will be a cakey mess, as seen in the photo above. It is best used with a loose or compact powder. I always use a compact powder with SPF content after applying the Glamour Shot. :)

SAMPAR Glamour Shot claims to minimize wrinkles, mattify skin, mask imperfections and correct redness in ONE minute after application. I have to say that it really does what it claims, although you will probably have to test it in person to believe it. The photo above was taken when I first tried out the product, and I was seriously surprised at the huge difference it made on the spot!

Remember when I mentioned that is has long-lasting anti-wrinkle effects if used long term? Well, you can see for yourself from the collage below!

My Verdict?
SAMPAR Glamour Shot is indeed an amazing product, as it has instant effects as well as long-lasting effects when used long term. "Blurring lines between skincare and makeup" is definitely an apt description for this product.

✓ Pros: Instant lifting effect, minimizes lines, smoothens skin, reduce redness, saves time during makeup, has long term anti-wrinkles effect, simple yet effect packaging, squeeze pump dispenser is hygienic and reduces product wastage.
✗ Cons: Does not work with liquid/cream foundations and concealers, not recommended for very dry skin (unless properly moisturized), not for those looking to conceal severe skin blemishes.

Nevertheless, I'm back with another beauty box unboxing, and it's February's Chinese New Year edition WonderBox! :D This time around, the ribbon is a brownish gold shade. Chinese New Year, wealth, gold, prosperity... all these go hand-in-hand, right? （＾∀＾）

First we have an RM30 Murad gift voucher, and a Jacqueline Burchell online store 20% discount code.

Murad Energizing Pomegranate Moisturizer (30ml - deluxe sample)
Lightweight, oil-free moisturizer infuses skin with hydration and protects against UVA/UVB rays.

Unlike other moisturizers, this one has a watery texture. I like it though, because it is more easily applied and absorbed. The pomegranate scent, although not my favourite, is passably pleasant. The best thing about this item? It has SPF 15!

Clears pores while balancing oily and dry zones, visibly reduces pore size for a flawless complexion.

I'm not sure when I'll get around to actually using this, since I have received a similar product in another beauty box. I've heard Murad products are really good though, so perhaps I'll give this one a chance in my beauty regime. :P

I've always wondered about this particular brand H2O+, as I always pass by their store whenever I shop in 1Utama. There doesn't seem to be much mention about them on beauty or lifestyle blogs, so I'm glad they're in this month's WonderBox. Love their simple, minimalist packaging.

With over 250 nail lacquer colours to choose from, Jacqueline Burchell nail lacquer will bring out the colour in your life. Certified to be free of Toluene, Formaldehyde and Dibutyle Phthalate.

You probably know by now, my favourite items are always the colourful items! (≧∇≦) These nail lacquers are small but pack a punch in terms of pigmentation. One coat is completely opaque on the nails. However, the formula seems to be a little thick, and a top coat is needed if you love high shine finishes on your nails.

I'm pretty pleased with this February WonderBox, because they had some pretty good brands (Murad, H2O+) as well as introducing a new brand (Jacqueline Burchell) to subscribers.

Illamasqua - Underworld (Lipstick) and Boost (Lipgloss)

Hello again, pretty peeps! Does the name Illamasqua ring a bell? It's a really popular high street cosmetic brand in the UK and US, but due to its ~~extremely~~ limited availability in our Asian regions, it doesn't have as much recognition here.

I was really lucky to win one of the giveaways by Nancy last December, and she sent me not only the Illamasqua lipstick and lip gloss, but also added three Maybelline Color Tattoos in my parcel after knowing that we don't have them here in Malaysia. :') Thank you so much! ♥

Illamasqua Lipstick in "Underworld"

Sleek, glossy and Gothic ;)

The packaging for Illamasqua products is primarily black, and has a very Gothic feel to it, from their sigil-like logo to the sleek glossy black casing. The lid is large and snaps shut with a firm click, so no worries about it coming off by accident. The shape of the lipstick tube is also very unique, and is made from plastic that is lightweight without feeling 'cheap'. Unfortunately, the glossy surface also makes it a major fingerprint magnet.

Underworld is a iridescent purple shade with a strong blue duochrome. I have never worn or owned any purple lipsticks before, so this is definitely a first. The lipstick has a sweet scent, which kinda reminds me of cookies or donuts. (｡♥‿♥｡)

The blue sheen is much more apparent than shown here; my camera couldn't seem to catch it. :(

I expected the lipstick to be much more opaque, so I was a little disappointed when it swatched like this. The colour is very sheer indeed. However, the redeeming part is that this particular shade is unique. It is purple with a very ethereal blue sheen, reminiscent of dragonfly wings.

Bare lips

Illamasqua lipstick in "Underworld"

The lipstick is sheer, so it merely adds an iridescent sheen to your lips' natural colour. The shade is definitely interesting, and a change from the usual pinks, reds and nudes you see every day. The downside of this lipstick, besides its sheerness, is that the formula is very drying. I suggest putting a layer of lip balm to prep beforehand. However, from the reviews I'd seen, this problem only applies for Underworld, as the usual Illamasqua lipsticks are quite moisturizing in general. The lipstick itself is also very soft/fragile, as evidenced when it broke at the base when I was applying it straight from the tube. （；￣д￣）

Illamasqua Intense Lipgloss in "Boost"

The packaging for the Illamasqua Intense Lipgloss is pretty normal but classy nonetheless, with its clear tube to showcase the lipgloss shade and a glossy black cap.

Boost is a stunning purple lipgloss with a shimmery blue undertone. It's basically the opaque, lip gloss version of Underworld lipstick, and definitely not one for the faint of heart.

It comes with a brush applicator, which works perfectly to apply the lipgloss. Normally I prefer doe-foot wands for lip gloss, but for this particular lip gloss, the brush works much better to ensure smooth and precise application.

Above is the swatch for Boost. It is a very opaque purple shade with strong blue shimmer undertones. There is a faint scent of something sweet and fruity to this gloss, which does not bother me, but those with sensitive noses should take note. Texture wise, this gloss is thick but not too sticky, and lasts well over 4 hours with minimal eating and drinking.

Comparison: Boost lipgloss and Underworld lipstick

I would say that both are unique, and it really depends on personal preference when choosing between the Underworld lipstick and Boost lipgloss. Of course, in terms of colour payoff and texture, Boost wins hands down, but if you're looking for something a little more work-appropriate and daytime-friendly, Underworld is the one I'd pick. :)
