Life in the Canyon

In need of some tranquility and astounding beauty? Put away the meditation CDs, jump in your car, and take a drive from Bozeman to West Yellowstone through the Gallatin Canyon. As you enter the canyon, about 6 miles south of the quaint little town of Gallatin Gateway, you will start your meandering drive along the Gallatin River toward Yellowstone Park. As you drive along, spellbound by the flow of the river and listening to your favorite music, keep an eye out for all sorts of wildlife. I’ve seen plenty of deer and elk, not to mention moose, coyotes and eagles.

As you get closer to the Big Sky turnoff (about 22 miles from the start of the canyon and upon encountering the only stop light you will see until West Yellowstone), watch out for the Big Horn Sheep. I’ve heard complaints about the occasional “Big Horn” traffic jam. Beats sitting at a stop light in Big City, USA any day of the week. This unique drive continues until you reach West Yellowstone, about 45 miles past Big Sky, which is the west gateway to Yellowstone National Park. Along the way, you may notice the river dotted with fishermen and white water rafters, and catch a glimpse of horseback riders heading up the mountain side. The winter view is equally spectacular, with a blanket of white covering the trees and mountain side, and the Gallatin River partially iced over with white topped rocks sticking out here and there. It’s not hard to see why people from all over the world fall in love with the Big Sky area. You may be a winter loving skier/boarder/skater/etc., or perhaps a summer loving fisherperson, horseback rider, whitewater rafter/kayaker, hiker, etc. Either way, you truly cannot beat the beauty of life in the Gallatin Canyon. All of these things, along with the proximity of Big Sky, Bozeman and Yellowstone National Park, make the canyon an ideal setting to be in. Whether you are a subdivision kind of person and would like the social aspect of neighbors, or would like some room along the river or up the hill, there are wonderful properties up and down the Gallatin Canyon you could call home. I envy the lucky ones who do.

For all you thrill seekers out there, Big Sky has a few options to satisfy your need for speed. Although, Big Sky is often described as a gorgeous place to relax and get away from it all, this doesn’t mean you can’t discover an adventure here, especially in the summer!

High Ropes Course

Big Sky Resort’s Basecamp offers a variety of activities to entertain its visitors. One of its most unique and thrilling activities is the high ropes course, a challenge of more than ten elements suspended 20-30 feet in the air that you must navigate while safely harnessed and led by a guide. The course is a slightly intimidating maze of ropes, logs, planks, and even swinging tires waiting to be conquered by a fearless climber- however, the course is kid and family friendly just as long as the kids are taller than 3 feet and 11 years of age, or older. If you’re looking to get out of your element and get your heart racing while having a blast, you should definitely give this course a try!

Giant Swing

The Giant Swing is the newest feature added to the list of summer fun at the resort. You begin you’re adventure by climbing up a 30-foot staircase, complete with a harness and helmet, then when it’s your turn, just a couple short steps will send you plunging off the edge of the platform. Screams from those daring enough to attempt the deed can be heard all through Mountain Village as the swing carries adrenaline junkies 60-feet out, over the town center. The swing may cause you to have qualms before you go flying off of the edge of the platform, however, screams repeatedly turn to laughter (and funny faces) as the swing is sure to satisfy your inner daredevil!

Mountain Bike

We’ve talked about the scenic thrills of mountain biking before, but did we mention the adrenaline rush? No harnesses here, and minimal human encounters, but helmets are highly recommended as the resort offers 15 trails for you to blaze down on your bike. The mountain bike trails are accessible via the Swift Current ski lift located in Mountain Village, set your bike on one lift chair and yourself on another, then with a little help from the friendly lift operators, you’ll be headed back down the mountain on two wheels in a matter of awe-inspired minutes. This mountain is made for intermediate bikers with 10 of the 15 trails being set at this level, yet, there are 2 beginner trails along with 1 advanced trail and 2 expert/pro trails for the mountain biking enthusiast. The trails range from downhill to freeride to jump line – take a look at some trail reviews in order to get a taste of what is right for you!

Zipline

If you recall hearing about the mountain bikes, you most likely remember that the Zipline also made our list of picturesque pleasures in Big Sky. Yet, again the visual benefits of the Zipline are only part of the fun! The three part adventure that sends you soaring 525-feet through the Moose Tracks forest will have you holding your breath, or perhaps screaming at the top of your lungs, and then begging to do it again! As you zip down the line, you’ll be flying at a top speed of 25 miles-per-hour and hanging dozens of feet above the ground.

To get things started you will be required to hike a short, 20-minute hike to the start of the Zipline, then after you get a harness and helmet, you’ll start on the first line towards the bottom of Huntley Hollow and ends in the trees below Middle Road. The second line starts a short downhill hike from the end of the first and ends next to the bottom of Hangmans continuing to the third line, which starts at the end of the second and ends towards the bottom of Middle Road/Lower Calamity Jane.

The cables used for the zipline are said to be strong enough to carry the weight of a small car, which may calm your nerves a bit. However, if that doesn’t work, just recall that this activity is also family; kids ranging from as young as four can zip down the mountain just as long as they’re at least 3-feet tall and weigh a minimum of 45-pounds. No matter your age, the Zipline is a great rush filled with plenty of laughter and fun as well – some people even Zipline upside down!

Whitewater Rafting

Last, but certainly not the least of this adventure packed list, is whitewater rafting. Rivers in Southwest Montana are well-known for fly-fishing, yet that’s not all these waters have to offer! The runoff from melting winter snow makes rafting a breath-taking experience along with swift currents, and exquisite surroundings. Again, helmets are required, but so are trained guides to take you on this wet and winding journey down the river.

Whitewater Rafting in Big Sky

There are a few companies offering rafting trips in and around Big Sky, most of which offer full or half day trips to raft down the Gallatin River just off of Hwy 191, which is the road you take to get from Bozeman to Big Sky, or the Yellowstone River.

Fishing in Big Sky

Whether you’re a life-long angler, the occasional fisherman or someone who wants to learn to fly fish, the Big Sky area of Montana is a great place for you. Set into the heart of some of the United States most well known rivers (The Jefferson, Madison, Bighorn, Yellowstone) there is opportunity for any fisherman at any level. With plenty of wide open banks, the local fishing can cater to a novice angler without the hassle of continually snagging lines on trees and if you’re looking for something a little more solitary there is no shortage of nooks and crannies along these rivers where you can enjoy some peace and quiet.

However, Southwest Montana boasts more than just a high number of great fishing rivers; the geographic layout of the area provides not only gorgeous scenery but a diversity in weather so that if one site is being rained out or flooded with spring run off, odds are you can drive to a nearby river and find great fishing right away. We met with Ian Davis of Yellow Dog Fly Fishing here in Bozeman to get a professional’s insights into the Big Sky areas fantastic fly fishing.

Additionally, with Bozeman, Big Sky and West Yellowstone all nearby, this area has the conveniences that aren’t always associated with great hunting and fishing. This allows for easier family get aways as it offers the diversity to cater to each individual’s interests and hobbies. This holds especially true in winter since the Big Sky area offers some of the premiere skiing in North America, excellent snowmobiling, multiple spas and the rivers will be all but completely vacant, offering you an amazing venue for a peaceful day of angling (it will be chilly though!).

Big Sky Real Estate and Fly Fishing

Big Sky’s real estate offers a lot for those interested. The community is bordered by the Gallatin River, running along Big Sky’s east side, many properties and homes have the luxury of having the river flow through their property. However, there are more options than just the Gallatin. Going south, in the community of West Yellowstone there is the Madison flowing out of the Yellowstone National Park (which also provides some amazing fly fishing as well – note: a Yellowstone National Park fishing license is required) and moving onto Hebgen Lake.

For the fly fisherman/woman who is thinking about finding a home base for all of their fly fishing trips to Montana – Big Sky has the perfect home and condominium options for you to hang your hat… your rod… and your flies. For fly fishing, Big Sky is as good as it gets with it’s centralized location, year round activities and more than enough outdoors for the entire family or the guy’s fishing week.

There’s a reason A River Runs Through It was filmed here, and it’s because this area is like something out of a movie; and the fishing really is that good. Until you’ve stood atop one of the local mountains it’s hard to really understand why they call it “The Big Sky State”, it just seems to go on-and-on.
