Here is the official line from Motorola on these long backordered DTMF microphones -

Due to a critical obsolete part from our supplier, Motorola is unable to supply mobile DTMF microphones HMN1037, HMN1053, HMN3013, and HMN1032 at this time. We currently have an engineering team starting the process to re-tool, re-test, and re-qualify the new component. Our intent is to continue to supply these microphones. Unfortunately since we are building this new component from scratch, it will be a long process to ensure we are shipping a quality end product. Please note, due to delays in production, revised ship date is now expected to be the end of May 2009.

As the World celebrates Earth Day on April 22nd, all of us at Wiscomm take the environment pretty serious, nothing militant but always aware of the impact we might leave. We thought in honor of Earth Day we would simply list a few of the steps we do to in the course of our operations.

Our business overall is the ultimate recycling, when we work with clients looking to move inventory, we take it all, not just cherry pick the best and through everything else away. One way or another we find a home for every radio we take in.
All of Wiscomm's battery inventory gets recycled when batteries hit its end of life. We work with a few organizations who properly recycle and dispose of all batteries.
Most of the cleaning supplies we use at Wiscomm are "green", we use "Simple Green" or supplies from our friends at "EcoGeeks".
All of our new boxes include recycled content, we recycle all of our inbound boxes and reship outbound product to our clients (that's why you may see old writing or labels on your packages).
We combine our daily shipments to our shipping carriers.

These are just a few of the daily processes we do to keep the earth happy, Being green can actually save you green!

Motorola Parts Delays (4/10/09)

Motorola started some new computer upgrades on Friday April 10th, these upgrades will eventually allow for real-time availability of parts in the Motorola warehouse, however at this time they are experiencing delays of 1-2 days before being able to ship. We normally are able to order by 3pm Central and have parts arrive the following morning, through this week you should add a day or two before we are able to ship. They are advising these delays should diminish later in the week.

UPDATE (APR16 - 0630): Motorola is still having shipping issues with parts and accessories coming from its main distribution center in Elgin, IL. Delays of 2-3 days (normally same day) are common. Motorola is advising the computer issues are fixed and they are working on the order backlog. They expect to be back to the same day ship on in-stock items by Monday April 20th.

UPDATE (APR 20 - 0800) : Motorola is now shipping same day, so order placed with Wiscomm by 3pm Central US will ship to you the following business day. This is for in-stock items only.

SPRING CLEANING - Radios that is!

If there is one thing everyone on the staff at Wiscomm knows how to do, it's clean radios. We obviously get alot of radios through here, one of the first things every radio we get in gets a good cleaning. We often get asked what process end users should do to maintain there radio investment, we suggest a regular proper cleaning. Here are some tips and tricks we use on daily basis:

We first pull all the accessories from the radio (antenna, battery, mics, belt clips) and put them on the side for a separate cleaning.
Focusing on the radio itself, we remove all sticker and tape applied to the outside of the case (not the radio ID tags) using one of the following chemicals, either GooGone or WD-40.
Once all labels/tape have been removed, we want to give the radios a good bath. Think of all the people who have been hacking, coughing and god knows what else then using this radio, this freaks us out and we need to disinfect the radio, really! We use a 50% dilution of Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner Concentrate, liberally apply this mixture (without immersing radio) watching so not too much liquid gets into the speaker or microphone areas. After a short period of time we aggressively scrub unit using a stiff synthetic brush, then spraying units again with the cleaning mixture mentioned above. Using a clean cloth remove dry radio and removing any liquid paying particular attention to the speaker and microphone ports witch may require a quick puff of air remove any remaining liquid. At this point we like to give units a good spray of Lysol to kill and remaining germs and allow to air dry.
After the thorough cleaning and disinfecting, we want to polish up these units. We like to use Pledge, liberally spray the Pledge on the radios (again you do not want to fill the speaker and microphone areas) and allow to sit on radios overnight if possible. The longer you let the Pledge sit on the radios the better they will and the longer it will maintain its shine.
Repeat the above process for all the accessories (antennas, batteries, belt clips, microphones).
Reassemble accessories and enjoy your new looking radios!

XTS 3000, XTS 3500 and XTS 5000 Radio/Battery Contact Preventive Maintenance

Bulletin was Up-Issued to improve overall clarity

SUBJECT: XTS 3000, XTS 3500 and XTS 5000 Radio/Battery Contact Preventive Maintenance

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information relative to assuring integrity and reliability of the power contacts on the XTS 3000, XTS 3000R, XTS 3500, XTS 3500R, XTS 5000 and XTS 5000R portable radios and batteries.

MODEL / SYSTEM AFFECTED:
All XTS 3000, XTS 3000R, XTS 3500, XTS 3500R, XTS 5000, and XTS 5000R portable radio models and all compatible batteries are possibly affected.

SYMPTOM:
Radios with a build up of contamination in the radio/battery contact interface may experience unexpected radio resets. For display radios, a reset will be accompanied by the display indicating ‘Self Test’ followed by the power-up tone. For non-display radios only the power-up tone may be heard. Radios may drop out of scan and/or revert back to the top channel or zone switch settings if the zone and/or the channel have been changed from the front keypad or from a remote accesssory.

CAUSE:
Contact material technologies used in the above noted portable radios are engineered to provide reliable interconnect between the radio and battery. However, to assure reliable performance, typical with all battery operated devices, it is important to assure that both sides of the electrical interface remain clean and free of foreign material and other non-conductive contaminants. Contamination on battery or radio contacts, such as fibers, dirt or other nonconductive materials may collect and cause intermittent radio/battery connection and power interruption (resets). This contamination can also cause accelerated wear to the radio and/or battery’s contact surfaces.

RESOLUTION:
The ‘DeoxIT®GOLD’ cleaner/lubricant pen (supplier CAIG Labs, part number GX100P-UV) has been found to be very effective at cleaning and extending the life of the XTS series portable radio’s contacts. DeoxIT®GOLD is available at numerous electronics suppliers (Radio Shack, McMaster Carr, Fry’s, etc.) and directly from the manufacturer, CAIG Labs, at http://www.caig.com. The pen-based package is recommended as it provides better access to the recessed contacts of the battery. The pen’s tip will most likely need to be modified (trimmed on the sides) to improve penetration into the battery contact slots.
Per the manufacturer’s instructions, shake the pen and depress the tip until the fluid saturates the tip. Apply to each contact surface (radio AND battery sides). IMPORTANT - Extra care should be taken to ensure adequate lubricating of the larger contact surface area of the battery contacts. After cleaning, inspect both contact surfaces for signs of advanced wear. Advanced contact wear is defined as wear through either the radio OR the battery’s contact platings (gold and nickel) to the base metal (copper). Copper exposure is characterized by a distinctive orange-brown metal appearance surrounded by the silvery nickel underplate and gold top plating. In some cases, a magnified (8x to 10x) inspection may be required to verify wear into the base material. Polishing of the gold or nickel surface is common and is not considered a need for replacement.

IMPORTANT - In instances where advanced wear is evident on the radio’s B+ header, it should be replaced per the following part number table.

IMPORTANT - Batteries whose contacts exhibit advanced wear should also be replaced.

After cleaning the contact areas of any foreign material, let the lubricant/cleaner air dry for two minutes. IMPORTANT - Do not wipe dry. Replace the battery on the radio and test for intermittency by moving the battery relative to the radio as might occur in regular use.
Regular maintenance (at least annually) of this area is recommended to ensure contamination free interface and to prolong the life of the radio and battery contacts.

CP125 – CP150 Radio Discontinuation

All models of the CP125 and CP150 radio are being discontinued effective June
30th, 2009. The CP125 is being replaced by CP110d 16CH 2W, and CP185
16CH 4W. The CP150 is being replaced by CP110 2CH 2W, BPR 40 8CH 4W,
and CP200 4CH/16CH 4W depending on power, number of channel and
frequency demand.

Wiscomm's 2009 Swapfest Schedule Announced

We have added one more stop to this years Hamfest/Swapfest schedule. We love attending these events and meeting with area hams, we are hams and this really where Wiscomm started by selling at the events. They are alot of work for Wiscomm, packing what now is a large rental truck and taking a nice portion of our inventory, you can usually get some incredible bargains as we likely do not want to haul this stuff back to our warehouse.

New Wiscomm Store Launched!

We just launched the first phase of our new Wiscomm store. We currently are testing it with microphones for the Motorola high-tier radios (XTS5000 and like). We also listed all replacement parts for the Motorola HT750.

Its still a little rough in design, but everything appears to be working great. This new site will allow us to add and manage more products online easier and more efficient.
