Hand-foot syndrome typically occurs within a few weeks of beginning chemotherapy, although it can appear at any time.

Diabetes Drug Fights Breast Cancer

New research suggests adding metformin, a commonly used diabetes drug, to conventional chemotherapy may help treat breast cancer. Researchers suggest that metformin may even delay the recurrence of this cancer. In mice, metformin suppressed the cancer stem cells that are thought to aid tumor progression.

Fast Facts:

In mice treated with chemotherapy alone, tumors regrew. There was no regrowth in mice who received both drugs.

Alone, metformin is ineffective in treating tumors.

This study is published in the September 2009 online issue of Cancer Research.

Remission occurs when a disease is responding well to treatment and symptoms disappear. This term commonly refers to cancer or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), though other conditions can go into remission.

Partial remission is the term used when most, but not all, of the symptoms have improved.
