High Cholesterol and Plaque Buildup

If your levels of cholesterol are too high, LDLs (low denisty lipoproteins or "bad" cholesterol) will leave extra cholesterol in the blood which leads to the formation of artery-blocking plaque. When the HDLs (high density lipoproteins or "good" cholersterol) cannot pick up all of the extra cholesterol, it remains on your artery walls, along with other fats. Over time, this residue, or plaque, can narrow and even block the blood vessels completely. Plaque buildup on your blood vessel walls is called atherosclerosis.

Fast Facts:

Either high LDL cholesterol or low HDL cholesterol may lead to the buildup of cholesterol (plaque) in artery walls.

Plaque hardens and narrows arteries and reduces blood flow to body tissue, including the heart.

Plaque buildup, when it affects arteries that supply blood to the brain, may lead to a stroke.

Large plaque areas can lead to chest pain called angina.

Another name for atherosclerosis is "hardening of the arteries."

ADHD, also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a common condition. People who have ADHD have problems maintaining attention in school, at home, and work. They may be overly active or impulsive. The behaviors seen with ADHD can lead to problems with relationships, learning, and behavior.

Fast Facts:

ADHD affects children and adults.

Up to 10% of all school aged children may be affected by ADHD.

ADHD is more common in boys than girls.

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage caused by diabetes which affects the longest nerves in the extremeties. The main cause of this type of neuropathy is poor blood sugar management. Pain, tingling, numbness, and loss of feeling in the hands, arms, feet, and legs are common symptoms. Medication, physical therapy, exercise program, diet, and controlling blood glucose levels are treatment options.

Fast Facts:

Peripheral neuropathy is the most common type of diabetic neuropathy.

Approximately sixty to seventy percent of diabetic patients experience some form of neuropathy.

A study performed over a ten year span concluded that proper blood glucose maintenance reduced the risk of peripheral nueropathy by approximately sixty percent.

Diabetic Lens Osmosis

Diabetic lens osmosis is an eye condition that occurs when the ocular lens fills with fluid causing blurred vision. It is generally short-term and caused by increased blood glucose levels. Series symptoms of diabetic lens osmosis include loss of sight, distorted vision, cloudy vision, and double vision.

Fast Facts:

Commonly occurs during onset diagnosis of type 1 diabetes.

Osmotic lens and diabetic lens are alternative names for diabetic lens osmosis.

This condition is usually reversible with proper control of blood sugar.

It may take a couple of months for normal vision to return after blood sugars are under control.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends a yearly eye exam for individuals with diabetes.

Respiratory Arrest

Respiratory arrest is breathing that has stopped while the heart is still active. Respiratory arrest can be the result of a drug overdose, airway obstruction, or a lung disease. During respiratory arrest, the person is unconscious and in danger of having cardiac arrest if not immediately treated.

Fast Facts:

Respiratory arrest is also known as prolonged apnea.

Signs of respiratory arrest include limpness, seizure, and lack of alertness.

CPR should be administered at the first sign of respiratory arrest.

Other causes of respiratory arrest include near drowning, head injury, and anesthesia.

High cholesterol is a risk factor for coronary artery disease. When there is too much cholesterol in your blood, it builds up on the walls of your arteries, causing atherosclerosis, a form of heart disease. Once the inside wall of an artery is damaged, fatty deposits made of cholesterol and other waste products tend to collect at the spot of injury. This clump can block the artery, leading to a heart attack.

Fast Facts:

High levels of cholesterol in your blood can increase the risk of formation of deposits and atherosclerosis.

Risk factors for coronary artery disease are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity.

Atherosclerosis leads to the number one cause of death in the United States for both men and women: coronary artery disease.

Rhabdomyolysis and Statins

Rhabdomyolysis is the rapid destruction of muscle and is a severe side effect of statins. Severe muscle aching throughout the body, muscle weakness, and dark or cola-colored urine are the common symptoms of rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis may cause kidney damage and a life-threatening condition called disseminated intravascular coagulation. The major contributing cause of rhabdomyolysis related to statins is extreme overmedication. If symptoms occur, contact a health care professional immediately.

Fast Facts:

Approximately eight million individuals in the United States are prescribed statins for high cholesterol.

Baycol (cerivastatin), classified as a statin, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1997 and withdrawn in 2002 due to association with rhabdomyolysis.

Other risk factors of rhabdomyolysis with statins are gender, low weight, diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disorder, kidney disease, liver disease, recent surgery, consuming large quantities of grapefruit juice, and overexercising.

Patients with high cholesterol are at risk for developing peripheral arterial disease (PAD). PAD affects the blood vessels located outside of the heart and brain. It is caused by fatty deposits in the blood circulation and commonly affects the legs and feet. Ways to prevent PAD include a healthy diet, exercise, and medications.

Fast Facts:

PAD affects approximately eight million individuals in the United States.

Increased levels of triglycerides may restrict blood flow increasing the risk of heart disease and heart attacks.

Cranial neuropathy is a condition that can occur from nerve damage caused by other medical conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, HIV/AIDS, and cancer. It affects the 12 pairs of nerves that are connected with the brain and control sight, eye movement, hearing, and taste. It also affects the nerves which control the eye muscles. Cranial mononeuropathy III is the diabetic type which means only one nerve is damaged. One symptom of cranial neuropathy is face pain that is near the eye which will usually occur on one side. Cranial neuropathy can also be the first sign of skin cancer recurrence.
