It is characterized by high blood sugar levels. For type 2 diabetes, treatment starts with lifestyle modifications including losing weight, quitting smoking, exercising and adopting a healthy, balanced diet.

Type 1 diabetes (also known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes) is a condition which affects a person's blood sugar levels. It prevents the body from absorbing glucose from the bloodstream effectively and turning it into energy. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone which allows the body's cells to absorb glucose.

Fast Facts:

Genetics and exposure to certain viruses may contribute to the onset of type 1 diabetes.

There is no cure for type 1 diabetes, but it may be managed through proper treatment.

Fatigue, extreme hunger, and increased thirst are a few symptoms of type 1 diabetes.

In 2007, 7.8% of the US population (23 million people) developed diabetes.

Protein Linked to Diabetes

An analysis of previous studies reveals that people with higher levels of a protein called adiponectin have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Until recently, the relationship between adiponectin and type 2 diabetes risk has been cloudy. These findings differed by race, but body mass index, gender, and study size did not affect the outcome.

Fast Facts:

Researchers feel that adiponectin is the strongest, most consistent biochemical predictor of type 2 diabetes.

Data from over 14,000 people in 13 different studies was analyzed.

These findings may be found in a July 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Celiac and Type 2 Diabetes

There is not a genetic link between celiac disease and type 2 diabetes; however it is possible to have both conditions independent of each other. Individuals with both type 2 diabetes and celiac disease need to go on a gluten free diet. It is important to watch blood sugar levels when eating gluten-free goods. Symptoms of type 2 diabetes in individuals with celiac disease include urinating at night, thirst, weight gain, tiredness, vision changes, numbness in the feet and increased appetite. A celiac patient can have a formal glucose tolerance test or a measuring of the hemoglobin A1C level to test for type 2 diabetes.

Fast Facts:

Individuals with celiac disease have a 5% risk of having Type 2 diabetes.

Having a family history of celiac increases the risk for type 2 diabetes to between 5-15%.

Celiac disease and type 2 diabetes are similar in that they both have confusing symptoms, making diagnosis easy to miss.

Individuals with celiac disease should be screened for type 2 diabetes every one to two years.

A fasting blood sugar test and a blood sugar two hours after eating tests are screening test for type 2 diabetes.

Approximately 3 million people in the U.S. have celiac disease.

There seems to be a link between people with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease.
