Perforated Colon

Colon perforation is usually a complication of other diseases such as ulcerative colitis or diverticulosis/diverticulitis, Crohn's Disease, or colon cancer. Sharp or blunt force trauma to the abdomen and accidental perforation during surgery, endoscopy, or laparoscopic procedures are also possible causes. Perforation of the lower bowel or colon invariably leads to bacterial contamination of the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity or peritonitis.

Fast Facts:

Colon perforation can occur in about 10-15% of patients with acute diverticulitis.

Colon perforation or rupture is an indication for the eventual removal of the colon in approximately 25-40% of patents with ulcerative colitis.

Necrotizing enterocolitis, a gastrointestinal disease that can affect one in 2,000-4,000 births (usually premature), can also lead to colon perforation or rupture.

Spontaneous colon perforation in the absence of disease or injury is rare, frequently misdiagnosed, and usually has a high mortality rate.

Taxotere Benefits

If your doctor has prescribed treatment with Taxotere (docetaxel), you may want to know the benefits of Taxotere. Taxotere interferes with certain cell structures, which in turn works to help stop cancer cells from growing and multiplying. Studies have shown that, in many cases, Taxotere may extend survival time and delay the progression of certain types of cancer. Taxotere is used in the treatment of prostate, breast, stomach, head, neck, and non-small cell lung cancer.

Colonoscopy Without Sedation

In the U.S. colonoscopies are generally carried out under either sedation or conscious sedation but can also be performed without sedation. Colonoscopy without the use of sedation is much more common in Europe and Asia. There are some potential advantages to performing colonoscopy without sedation such as a decreased risk related to the sedative medications used, a quicker recovery time after the procedure, and a reduction in cost.

After Effects of a Colonoscopy

The after effects of a colonoscopy frequently include fatigue, drowsiness, and dehydration particularly if sedation was employed. Minor problems such as abdominal discomfort, cramping, and gas can persist for up to 24 hours. Other symptoms such as diarrhea or constipation can occur within the first few days following the procedure. In general, complications after a colonoscopy are rare but there can be varying degrees of bleeding may be present if a polyp was biopsied or removed.

Fast Facts:

In 2006 a CDC-funded study reported that serious complications occurred in one of 200 colonoscopies where a polyp or biopsy was removed.

In the same study the complication frequency was only one in 1,000 colonoscopies when no tissue was removed during the procedure.
