Peptic Ulcer

A peptic ulcer (gastric ulcer, stomach ulcer, ulcer, duodenal ulcer) is a sore in the lining of your upper small intestine (duodenum) or your stomach. If not treated, peptic ulcers may worsen over time. Pain from the ulcer may come and go and often alleviates after you eat.

Fast Facts

Peptic ulcers are caused by the breakdown of the stomach, or intestine's, protective layer.

This breakdown most commonly occurs from an infection with helicobacter pylori bacteria or the chronic use of NSAIDs.

Quitting smoking and limiting the use of alcohol may prevent an ulcer from returning.

Medications are commonly prescribed to treat ulcers. Your doctor may also prescribe an antibiotic if your ulcer is caused by an H. pylori infection.

There is an increased risk of polydactyly and limb defects if taken during the first trimester. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has labeled hyoscyamine as a category C drug, meaning the effects of the medication have not been completely studied in pregnant women.

Consult with your physician before breastfeeding, as hyoscyamine is known to be excreted into breast milk.

Ulcerative colitis is part of a group of diseases known as inflammatory bowel disease. Ulcerative colitis causes ulcers to form in the lining of the rectum and colon. The chronic inflammation of the digestive tract caused by ulcerative colitis is characterized by abdominal pain and diarrhea. While there is no known cure for ulcerative colitis, therapies exist that may dramatically reduce the signs and symptoms and even bring about long-term remission.

Fast Facts:

Ulcerative colitis can occur at any age, but it usually starts between the ages of 15 and 30, and less frequently between 50 and 70 years of age.

About half of those with ulcerative colitis have mild symptoms.

Support groups and counseling may be important for coping with the emotional toll of ulcerative colitis.
