Babies born to women with autoimmune diseases are usually at higher risk for developing heart blocks.

Antipsychotics Cause Weight Gain in Kids

A 12-week observational study reveals dramatic and rapid weight gain in children who take atypical antipsychotics. The study looked at four of the most common antipsychotic drugs used in children: Risperdal or risperidone, Zyprexa or olanzapine, Abilify or aripiprazole, and Seroquel or quetiapine. While the drugs can be life-saving, the researchers said, the long-term consequences of weight gain and metabolic effects mean "the widespread and increasing use of atypical antipsychotic medications in children and adolescents should be reconsidered."

Median sternotomy is a surgical procedure in which a vertical incision is made along the sternum, after which the sternum is divided or cracked. This procedure provides access to the heart and lungs for surgical procedures such as heart transplant, corrective surgery for congenital heart defects, or coronary artery bypass surgery. Many median sternotomy procedures do not require an incision of the pericardium.

An endograft is a large fabric-covered stent that is compressed and positioned through a catheter to enter the patient's body. Once in place, the endograft is expanded to create a new path for blood flow. Benefits of an endograft include a shortened hospital stay and less blood loss during the procedure over normal surgery.
