Antipsychotics Cause Weight Gain in Kids

A 12-week observational study reveals dramatic and rapid weight gain in children who take atypical antipsychotics. The study looked at four of the most common antipsychotic drugs used in children: Risperdal or risperidone, Zyprexa or olanzapine, Abilify or aripiprazole, and Seroquel or quetiapine. While the drugs can be life-saving, the researchers said, the long-term consequences of weight gain and metabolic effects mean "the widespread and increasing use of atypical antipsychotic medications in children and adolescents should be reconsidered."

A home cholesterol blood testing device is used by pricking a finger, applying a few drops of blood on a test strip or well, and waiting for results. Fasting may be necessary prior to testing.
Cardiac Calcifications

Cardiac calcification is a common sign of early artery disease. During the beginning stages of artery disease, the lining of the aortic wall becomes inflamed, then plaque starts to build up and calcium deposits begin to form in the artery wall. This is the calcification. It is not reversible, but you can control the inflammation and prevent the calcification from progressing by controlling your risk factors.

An aortogram is also called an aortic arteriogram. This procedure finds narrowing in the blood vessels. An aortogram may also be used to evaluate an abdominal aneurysm. The test takes about an hour and uses an X-ray and special dye to view the blood flow in the arteries.

A prominent group of cardiologists propose the term "ischemic heart disease" be used when discussing heart disease specific to women instead of coronary artery disease (CAD) or coronary heart disease (CHD). They cite significant differences in heart disease between women and men. A name change may help doctors customize diagnostic tests and treatments based on the sex of the patient.

Statins can be compared to see which one is a better choice. All statins can lower LDL cholesterol by thirty-five percent, but different types may lower it even more. These include atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Mevacor), and rosuvastatin (Crestor). There are certain statins that reduce the risk of mortality better then others while some are better at reducing the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Researchers at the University of Washington, Seattle, found that the combination of antioxidant supplements and statin drugs resulted in a smaller increase in HDL ("good") cholesterol than when the drugs were used alone.
