Mental Health Care in Nursing Homes

Mental health care in nursing homes is a service that is becoming increasingly needed. The National Nursing Home survey found that 20% of the 1.5 million nursing home residents over the age of 65 received mental health services. About 16% had a mental disorder as their primary diagnosis. Approximately 80% of nursing home residents had psychological problems such as depression.

Fast Facts:

The 1985 National Nursing Home Survey data found that only 4.5% of the residents with a mental disorder received any mental health treatment in a one month period.

Reports issued by the Surgeon General and by the Institute of Medicine show a need for refining the assessment process and payment policies in order to improve access and quality.

Finding the appropriate residential facility can be a difficult task. Questions such as: "Do you have a geriatric psychiatrist or geriatric psychologist on staff or as a consultant?" and "How often do they come to your facility?" are important in assuring you are selecting the right placement for your loved one.
