Flu

The flu is a contagious disease infecting the nose, throat, and lungs. It is caused by the influenza virus that affects birds and mammals. Influenza can cause pneumonia, which can be serious and even fatal, especially in young children and the elderly. Influenza is different from the common cold. It is caused by a different type of virus and has a more severe course.

Fast Facts:

Wash your hands often. One of the most common ways people catch colds and the flu is by rubbing their nose or their eyes after their hands have been contaminated with a virus.

Flu symptoms are similar to the common cold including runny nose, sneezing, and sore throat.

Antiviral medications may help shorten the length of symptoms if the flu is diagnosed within 48 hours of when symptoms begin.

Pets have always been known to carry several different bacteria species that may cause serious infections. New research shows that pets also may carry meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, better known as MRSA. MRSA can be transmitted from the pet through bites or scratches and can cycle back and forth between the pet and owner.

Fast Facts:

Bites from a dog or cat account for around 1 percent of emergency room visits annually in the U.S.

Treatment for animal MRSA infections is similar to the treatment for humans.

Sepsis is a severe complication of MRSA from an animal bite.

As with all medications, your physician will consider many things prior to prescribing Flagyl, including your overall medical history, age, weight, and what it is being used to treat. When prescribed for the treatment of amebic dysentery, the typical dosage of Flagyl is 750 mg, taken three times daily. For amebic liver abscess, the dose is usually between 250 to 500 mg, administered three times as day. Treatment for either of the above lasts between five to 10 days. When used for trichomoniasis, Flagyl will be administered as either a one day dosage of 2 grams, taken at once or split into two doses, or a seven day therapy of 250 mg taken three times daily. If Flagyl is prescribed for anaerobic infections, it is initially administered intravenously in a medical facility. The oral dosage for this condition is based on weight, at a rate of 3.4 mg per pound. Flagyl ER is the only form approved for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, with the recommended dosage being 750 mg once, administered once daily for a seven day period.

Brand name for the generic metronidazole.

Take Flagyl with food.

Take any missed dose of Flagyl as soon as it is remembered, unless it is time for your next dose. In this case, eliminate the missed dose completely and return to your normal schedule. Do not double up on this medication.

To ensure that your infection is completely gone, it is important to finish taking all of this medication.

Having diabetes makes fighting the flu even harder. It's important for people suffering from diabetes to obtain the flu shot. Even pregnant women with diabetes should get the shot. The best time for the shot is before flu season begins. People with diabetes are three more times as likely to die from the flu or pneumonia. Contracting the flu when you have diabetes can also lead to dehydration and kidney failure.
