Bipolar disorder (also called manic depression) should be explained to children in a manner in which they are mature enough to understand. For example, toddlers and preschool children understand short sentences, and need concrete information. Children need reassuring that they did not make the parent sick or upset, and they are not to blame.

Antipsychotics Cause Weight Gain in Kids

A 12-week observational study reveals dramatic and rapid weight gain in children who take atypical antipsychotics. The study looked at four of the most common antipsychotic drugs used in children: Risperdal or risperidone, Zyprexa or olanzapine, Abilify or aripiprazole, and Seroquel or quetiapine. While the drugs can be life-saving, the researchers said, the long-term consequences of weight gain and metabolic effects mean "the widespread and increasing use of atypical antipsychotic medications in children and adolescents should be reconsidered."

Childhood ADHD Linked to Adult Criminal Behavior

Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are more likely to commit crimes as adults, a Yale School of Public Health study found. Study findings revealed that children with ADHD were twice as likely as their peers to commit robbery in adulthood and were 50 percent more likely to sell drugs. Researchers suggest that children showing ADHD symptoms should be viewed as an at-risk group, and targeted intervention programs to reduce the probability that these children commit crimes later may be appropriate.

Producer Barbara Gordon suffered from anxiety during her life. The anxiety she had to deal with led her to take Valium (diazepam). At one point her doctor told her to quit Valium cold turkey which led to a breakdown and a stay in a mental hospital. Her story was published in her 1979 autobiography titled I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can.
