Having a any kind of relationship with someone with ADD may be challenging, but can be done. Patience in your relationship is very important since people with ADD may be short tempered, forgetful, and resist being touched. Working together to learn about the disorder is helpful in romantic relationships, so you can discuss the ADD behaviors they exhibit and how it affects you. Seeing a therapist may help your relationship.

A study released in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology reported parents of ADHD children are twice as likely to divorce by the time their child is eight years old. ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder which causes hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention. The behaviors can be treated with medication, psychotherapy, and education. Unfortunately, uncontrollable and inappropriate behavior may cause problems for family dynamics.

Fast Facts:

The study included 282 teens and/or young adults diagnosed with ADHD in childhood and 205 parents.

The results showed 22.7 percent of the parents of ADHD children divorced by the time the child was eight.

12.6 percent of parents whose children were not diagnosed with ADHD separated by the time the child was eight.

ADHD with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) increased the risk of parents divorcing.

If you are experiencing discomfort during sex due to spasticity, your health care provider can recommend muscle relaxants to reduce spasms.

There is a higher rate of divorce in relationships where one partner has ADHD. Marriage counseling and help from an ADHD coach can help resolve relationship problems if both partners are willing to participate.

Fast Facts:

Pacing your conversation, practicing social skills, and focusing on the what your partner says can help to ease problems within your relationship.
