Many witches love the idea of altars, but have never had the pleasure of working with them because they are in the broom closet. For some people it’s just not safe to be openly Pagan, and while in a perfect world we would be able to express our religion however we want, without having to hide for fear of losing our jobs, our friends, or anything for that matter, but even though here in America we are supposed to be safe from that, sometimes that’s just not the case. But there’s good news for my broom closet friends. Altars do not have to be in your face obvious. Take this altar for instance:

Found through Google Images

By looking at it, it just looks like really cute Easter type stuff, arranged in an artful way, and guess what… it just looks like really cute decorations! This person has taken things that remind them of Spring, and Ostara, and created a gorgeous altar in honor of the season, without it being overly obvious, and you can, too!

Altars are awesome because they don’t have to be set up on a banquet table with all kinds of weird occult stuff on them (unless that’s how you like it that is!). Some of the best altars look like pretty decorations in your home, and only you know why it’s really there. In all honesty, I feel like those are the best, because every time you look at it you and only you know what those pretty decorations stand for, and that makes it more personal, bringing the Gods closer to you. Witchcraft has been called a mystery religion/tradition, and having a secret altar that only you know what it’s use is, brings the mystery back to things.

So here’s some ideas for your secret Ostara altar. If you are blessed with a fireplace and mantle in your home consider placing objects in an attractive way on your mantle that correspond with the season. For Ostara good ideas would include pretty candles, bunnies, eggs, flowers, black and white, or black and gold candles, and anything that makes you think of Spring! Colors for Ostara are yellows, greens, light purples, light blues, and almost any pastel color you can think of. Ostara is a time of balance because the days and nights are balancing out so things that portray that could be included as well.

Other great places for a secret altar could include things like a nice shelf hung in a hallway or in the living room (pretty much wherever you like), your nightstand, the kitchen table (ever seen those cute centerpieces?), and even the back of the toilet. Yeah toilets aren’t the first place you think of, but think of all those designer magazines that show cute stuff artfully displayed on the back of the toilet, and you’ll see what I’m talking about. If you’re not comfortable with that, consider on the bathroom counter. A lot of people use their bathroom counter space for decorating and why wouldn’t some cute Ostara eggs and a bunny and pretty pastel colors work the same way? The kitchen counter is a good place to consider as well if you like to decorate your counter space. And if you’re blessed with a kitchen island that would be a great place to arrange a beautiful Ostara altar without anyone being the wiser! Kitchen hutches, windowsills, coffee tables, sofa tables, entryway tables, anywhere that you can artfully place decorations works perfectly!

And don’t be afraid to get creative. Something like this beautiful Ostara altar pentagram topiary would look beautiful and can be created to look like any other decoration.

Found at Vermorlian Magick Shoppe on Etsy. Click the image to go to the shop.

I hope this post has inspired you with your own ideas for a secret Ostara altar! Get crafty, and there’s no limit to what you can do! Brightest blessings, and have fun making your own Ostara altar!

Ostara is the Pagan celebration of the return of Spring. It is celebrated on the Spring Equinox, and is very similar to the Christian Easter. The equinox this year falls on March 19-20! Are you prepared for it? It is still traditional to go egg hunting on Ostara, and should be a time spent with your family, enjoying the sun on your face, and the fact that Spring is here, even if it doesn’t totally show yet! Here in my little neck of the woods in Texas we’ve been known to get tons of snow on Easter (my parents are Catholic and still celebrate Easter that way), but we always know that it’s almost time to start planting our veggie gardens, and Mom’s flower garden at home. Here’s a really neat idea for celebrating Ostara with your family, especially if you have little ones that go egg hunting! I found this idea here.

Make your own magickal crystal Ostara eggs! This is super simple and makes a really neat surprise for your little ones. You’ll need:

1 C all-purpose flour

1/2 C salt

1/4 C clean sand (colorful sand would work well too!)

1 C used coffee grounds

3/4 cup warm water

Crystals or gemstones

Non-stick Cooking Spray

Acrylic paint to paint the eggs (optional)

Combine the flour, salt, sand, and coffee grounds. Slowly add water, and knead until you get a thick, gritty dough. Spray a crystal or gemstone with non-stick cooking spray and place in the middle of a small scoop of dough. Shape the dough around the crystal or gemstone, creating an egg shape. Bake all eggs on a cookie sheet at 350 for about 15 minutes, and allow to cool. Once they are cool they should be hard like a rock. Paint the egg if desired, and for added magickal benefits add a bit of intention to them so that they hold the intention of protection, love, happiness, and harmony, or whatever you would like them to hold!

Hide your eggs on Ostara and let the kiddos find them. They’ll love cracking open their eggs and finding the lovely treasure inside! Another idea on this is to make paper mache eggs! Check out this post at Not Martha to learn how!
