From the man shipped home in a rum barrel to the most dangerous woman in America, Chicago history comes to life in these tantalizing tales.

Living Landmarks of Chicago goes beyond the what, when, and where to tell the how and why of 50 Chicago landmarks. More than a book about architecture, these are stories of the people who made Chicago and many of its most popular tourist attractions what they are today. Brought to life on the page in 2021 by Author Theresa L. Goodrich, and updated in 2023, each chapter is a vignette that introduces the landmark, organized chronologically to illustrate the development of the city’s distinct personality. These 50 landmarks weave an interconnected tale of Chicago between 1836 and 1932 (and beyond).

And now, Jim Goodrich’s (Founder and Head Voice of With A Voice Like This) narration adds a unique and compelling dimension to the experience. His commanding voice brings out the passion, intrigue, and humor embedded in each vignette, creating an engaging listening experience that transcends traditional storytelling. Listen to the Sample Audio Clip:

History lines Chicago’s sidewalks. Stroll down LaSalle or Dearborn or State and you’ll see skyscrapers that have been there for a century or more. It’s easy to scurry by, to dismiss the building itself, but a hunt for placards turns up landmarks every few feet, it seems. Here’s a Chicago landmark; there’s a National Historic landmark. They’re everywhere.

Ironically, these skyscrapers keep the city grounded; they illustrate a past where visionaries took fanciful, impossible ideas and made them reality. Buildings sinking? Raise them. River polluting the lake and its precious drinking water? Reverse it.

Overpopulation and urban sprawl making it challenging to get to work? Build up.

From the bare to the ornate, from exposed beams to ornamented facades, the city’s architecture is unrestrainedly various yet provides a cohesive, beautiful skyline that illustrates the creativity of necessity, and the necessity of creativity.

After a sound-bite history of the city’s origins (see what we did there?), you’ll meet the oldest house in Chicago—or is it? Kinda. Sorta. Depends on who you ask.

That’s Chicago. Nothing’s simple, and nothing can be taken for granted. The reason the city has a gorgeous skyline and a vibrant culture and a notorious reputation for graft is because of those who built it, envisioned it, manipulated it.

CHICAGO, IL — On Monday, December 19 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon, a final donation of 3,300 pizzas will be distributed to feed Chicagoans in need as part of the 75th Anniversary Celebration of Home Run Inn (HRI), the pizza company that has captured the heart of Chicago since opening its first tavern on the South Side in 1947.

This final event marks over 10,000 pizzas donated in 2022 and caps off a year-long partnership between the oldest family-owned pizza brand and the City of Chicago Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS). Maura McCauley, Deputy Commissioner of Homeless and Domestic Violence Programs for the City of Chicago, Home Run Inn Fourth Generation Family Members, CEO Dan Costello and Senior Vice President Gina (Perrino) Bolger will be on hand, along with Dreezy Claus, Chicago’s Black Santa, and The Caroling Connection, an offering of With A Voice Like This, to hand out pizzas to twenty Chicago Homeless Shelters at the Original Home Run Inn location at 4254 W. 31st Street – A true “Miracle on 31st Street.”

“As we wrap up the year, I’m incredibly thankful for the collaboration and partnership with Homerun Inn, and our mutual goal of assisting families across Chicago. Their gracious donations have allowed us to continue to feed Chicago families that need it the most.” Brandie Knazze, Commissioner for the Department of Family and Support Services

“We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to partner with the City of Chicago to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Home Run Inn in 2022” says Dan Costello, CEO of Home Run Inn. “It is an honor and privilege to be able to carry out our 75 year legacy in this great city and also give back to those in need by donating 10,000 pizzas this year.”

During the year, pizza giveaways were established for the City of Chicago’s Homeless Shelters, Senior Centers and Community Service Centers, which included 2500 pizzas to elementary schools. With this commitment to serve vulnerable populations, Home Run Inn and DFSS worked together to create a real community and food-access impact for many thousands of Chicago residents.

ABOUT HOME RUN INN

Home Run Inn is considered Chicago’s very own thin crust pizza known for its irresistible flavor, hand-pinched buttery crust, zesty sauce, plentiful cheese and homemade sausage. The small tavern of the 1920’s was named Home Run Inn in 1947. Now, the company has 9 pizzerias throughout the Chicagoland area and frozen pizza sold in more than 40 states. Home Run Inn also is currently the official pizza of the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field and sold at Chicago’s Midway International Airport. Still family-owned and operated, Home Run Inn ranks among the top 10 in pizza brands sold nationally and number one in the Chicagoland area.
Links directing to a purchase page may be an affiliate link.

This week I posted story number 30. For six weeks, I’ve been recording and sharing children’s books in the hopes that it will give parents a few minutes of quiet time and will entertain the kids.

When the current situation started back in March and we were put under a shelter in place order here, I had a friend tell me that I should read children’s stories everyday online with video. It would really help out parents and kids during this time.

With A Voice Like This started as a podcast back in 2007. While it was primarily about music, including making a completely DIY EP, I also included other information and featured live interviews. That experience meant I was comfortable with live audio work. At the time I also swore I’d never do video because I didn’t like the look of someone just sitting behind a microphone, but I digress.

I thought it was a good idea and I wanted to do anything I could to help in any fashion. So I decided to quickly (or at least as quickly as I could) set this up and get going, so I laid down my ground rules:

The stories had to be free to watch and listen

They had to help on as many levels as possible

They had to happen on a consistent schedule

The stories should be live

The Stories had to be free to watch and listen

This was my primary goal. I immediately thought of YouTube. With their recent changes due to COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule), they don’t allow personalized ads on children’s content any longer. They also don’t allow comments or live chat and that fit perfectly with what I had in mind. A low noise floor, where the entire focus could be on the story as it was being read.

I also wanted to include access to the book itself and with some books, that means links to how you can buy the book, and sometimes those are affiliate links. I don’t consider that an ad, as no one has to buy the book or even click the link, but more on that next.

(Click or tap the graphic to open the story Beatrice The Little Camper Gets Rescued in a new window.)

They had to help on as many levels as possible

Helping Children and Parents. Check. But there are others involved in children’s stories as well. So I needed to identify them and see if there was a way I could help them too, not just during this time, but on an ongoing basis.

First are the Authors and/or Publishers. The easiest and best way is to provide information on how to buy the book. As of now, 60% of the stories that are available for purchase are only available directly from the author/publisher. That information is shared in the video description.

The remaining 40% are links to online stores. Whenever possible and the first place I look is Bookshop.org. The reason for that is simple. 10% of the sale from that affiliate link goes to support independent bookstores. Another group that I can help and it’s by using a specific link. If you want to know more, it’s on their About BookShop page. They explain how they work with Independent Bookstores (It really helps to have an author for a wife). They just launched this past January.

Here was a bit of a wrinkle. I needed to have the rights to record the book and it needed to be at no charge, the trade-off is the exposure and the purchase information. But what to do when I don’t have a current book to read? I won’t read without the proper rights, so I fill with Children’s stories in the Public Domain. For that, I’m indebted to the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature at The University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries and their digital collection. The collection has been a lifesaver, pure and simple.

(Click or tap the graphic to open the story Into the Night in a new window.)

They have to be on a consistent schedule

This was a big point. At first, I didn’t know what I was getting into, so I had thought of possibly doing 7 days a week. I was quickly disabused of that idea by just trying to get the idea up and running. It took two weeks to get the first 5 stories complete. At that point, I thought 5 days a week was sufficient (I question my own wisdom and sanity on that decision at times still).

(Click or tap the graphic to open the story The Christmas Tractor in a new window.)

The Stories should be live

This was my one roadblock that could have done this project in at the beginning. I had a specific quality and method in mind and I found out that I had some experiential and technical hurdles that would prevent a live stream of the stories. The biggest one? I had no ethernet port on my laptop. I hadn’t realized that until went to set up the live stream. Long story as short as I can, There was no way I could achieve a consistent quality live stream over WiFi with my current setup. And I tried a bunch of technical workarounds.

I found the answer on YouTube. They have a Premiere function where you can prerecord and release a video at a specific time so everyone can view it at the same time. At that point, YouTube was the only service that I found had that feature, though I didn’t look too hard anywhere else at the time. I was set on using YouTube anyway.

Based on all of that, the Premiere time was Set for 10:00 am CT Monday-Friday.

And that’s how I got to 30 stories.

(Click or tap the graphic to open the story Denslow’s Jack and the Bean-Stalk in a new window.)

Where will it go from here

I have at least a couple more weeks before that decision needs to be made. It may continue after the current shelter in place is over, but not 5 days a week. But even if it doesn’t, I have a body of work that can and will help long term. A body of my work…And as an Artist, that helps me define what I did and how I used my talents at a time when it was needed and benefited as many people as possible.

If you would like to be a part of the work I’ve done, you can subscribe to my YouTube Channel, view my playlist or, I’ve built Stories – With A Voice Like This where you can watch the stories, submit a story if you’re an Author/Publisher and browse an archive of all the stories.

“We’re honored to participate in such a great tradition in Chicago, not only by performing in Festival Lane again, but also by appearing on the broadcast of Saturday’s events.” said Jim Goodrich, Founder and Head Voice at The Caroling Connection. “Working with everyone involved at The Magnificent Mile Association, Tamar Productions and ABC 7 in Chicago has been a wonderful experience and a great opportunity.”

This is the second appearance in Festival Lane by The Caroling Connection, which is celebrating its second year. What makes The Caroling Connection so special?

“It’s a combination of experience, professionalism, and vision,” said Goodrich, who’s been singing professionally for the past 30 years and caroling professionally for the past 24 years. “While the group may be new to the Chicago scene, I’ve been around awhile and have had the privilege to work with some amazing musicians. What truly makes The Caroling Connection special is combining the talent of experienced and highly trained singers with a vision of providing a memorable and magical experience. We help people feel that childlike wonder while they’re celebrating with family and friends. We want you to fall in love with the music all over again and feel the joy it brings. ”

The Caroling Connection will be strolling in Festival Lane on Saturday, November 18th from 1 – 3 PM, caroling to all the attendees of the Lights Festival. These four a cappella singers, festively dressed in 19th Century Dickensian costumes, will sing classic songs of the holidays, such as ‘Deck the Halls’, ‘Holly Jolly Christmas, ‘Silent Night’, ‘O Christmas Tree’ and more.

That’s what the holiday season brings…Of warmth and happiness, friends and family, sleepy-eyed children trying to stay awake long after bedtime. The Caroling Connection helps set the mood with quartets and double quartets of costumed a cappella Christmas carolers with the highest musical standards and performance experience to welcome our audiences into not only the season, but connect with the larger Caroling Connection family.

How The Caroling Connection came about

2016 is the first year for The Caroling Connection. After performing for 22 years as a professional Christmas caroler and more, having sung with the Grant Park Symphony Chorus and many other musical opportunities from Rock to Opera and everything in-between, it was time. Time to create a group that embodies what I wanted to see and be during the holidays.

Starting with the highest standards in music and performers as the foundation, but knowing that there’s so much more to the group and the holiday season itself. The knowing wink of an eye when something seemingly impossible happens, the smile that spreads warmth and joy and just the outright excitement that is the holiday season. Friends and family, joining together in the spirit of the season. Bringing the best holiday entertainment in the Dickensian style with live music. Four or eight singers using their voices to bring cheer. Something special when you’re hoping for it and when it’s least expected. That’s what it’s all about.

What The Caroling Connection does

The Caroling Connection is a quartet of Dickensian costumed a cappella singers who sing four-part holiday songs to provide an almost magical experience to our audience, helping to make holiday memories that last a lifetime. We’re trained musicians of the highest quality with experience to match that add that little something extra when you hear and see us sing. Some of the ways to use us are:

Caroling at your front door to welcome your guests

Strolling

Table to table at banquets or company dinners

Through a Reception or Cocktail hour

From store to store while your patrons are shopping

Throughout your company holiday party

Perform a set on a stage for events or meetings

Sing for your family holiday get togetherfor that special something extra

That surprise that no one is expecting

…And more

Our goal

Our goal is to create the atmosphere of warmth, joy and wonder that is a part of the holidays for your special event, party or business that will make a memory for everyone involved.

A Bit of Fancy

From time to time, we’ll post something from behind the scenes at The Caroling Connection, maybe a bit of fun or perhaps a new arrangement of a favorite carol, like this arrangement of Deck the Halls. This was done by our Head Voice, Jim Goodrich and the video features him singing all four parts. Of course, that won’t be the case when the Caroling connection sings it live, but like we said a bit of fun and behind the scenes all at once. Enjoy!

Keeping that in mind, this video shows you how to do exactly that.]

Transcript from the video

Embedding a large video file in WordPress

If you have a video file over 50 MB, you won’t be able to upload it using WordPress. First, you’ll need to upload via FTP.

I use Filezilla. Once you’ve connected to your Hosting server, on the right side double click the wp-content folder to open it, then double click uploads, then double click the year folder and then double click the month.
To upload the file, click and drag it from its location on your computer to the open month folder and it will begin uploading.

I use Filezilla because it’s a free program and works the same way whether you’re using Windows, Mac or Linux, you can find a link below. Your hosting service will also have an FTP program available.

Once the file is uploaded, you’ll have to make an entry in the database for WordPress to recognize it. I use a plugin called “Add from Server” for that, you can see a link below.

Once you’ve logged in to you WordPress site, on the left hand side of the dashboard, hover over Media and click Add From Server. This takes you to a new window and you’ll see the uploads folder is one of the quick jump destinations.

Click that and you’ll see the file you just uploaded. Click the checkbox for your file and then click import.
When it’s finished importing, you’ll get a success message and you’re ready to Embed your video.

To do that, hover your pointer over Posts or Page Click add new, title it, then click in the content area and click the add media button.

The insert media window will open, click the file you want to embed. Information about the file will appear on the right side and in the lower right double check that the Embed or Link dropbox says Embed Media Player.

Click the Insert into post button. The video is inserted.

Click the publish button on the right and the embedded video will be saved. Once it’s saved, click view and you will see the embedded video and you can click the play symbol to check that it’s working.

If you have any questions, let me know in the comments.

(ELGIN, IL; November 12, 2015) Home for the Holidays, A Musical Revue, opens its 19th season in a four performance engagement at the Elgin Art Showcase, 164 Division Street, 8th Floor, Elgin, IL 60120, December 4 – 6; presented by With A Voice Like This and FAME – Flora Ann McIntyre Entertainment and sponsored in part by an Individual Artist Grant from the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission.

Inspired by the classic films, Holiday Inn and White Christmas, this spectacular holiday concert will take you on a musical journey of classic songs from the ’40’s & ’50’s: Beginning with a WWII performance for the troops, we’ll move on to a Florida nightclub and finally settle in to a New England town. Christmas Eve In My Hometown, Home For The Holidays, Baby It’s Cold Outside & White Christmas are just a few of the classic songs performed in this magical revue. Complete with lavish costumes, original arrangements, comedy and plenty of sentiment, this show proves that the holidays will warm the heart and enrich the soul because everyone longs to be, “Home for the Holidays”!

“In the summer of 1995 I had an idea: Why not create a holiday concert that includes songs from some of my favorite childhood movies, like Holiday Inn & the classic 1954 film, White Christmas? Those old movies had everything I loved in a film; comedy, sentiment, song & dance plus a love story all in one.” said Flora Ann McIntyre, owner of FAME and co-producer. “From the beginning I wanted this to be a show that the entire family could enjoy and I consider this group of artists to be a part of my family.”

Florida Night Club – Home for the Holidays

Home for the Holidays runs 70 minutes with no intermission and features 30 classic songs performed by four singer/dancers and one keyboardist. For the last eighteen seasons Home for the Holidays has performed in multiple locations in Chicago and the surrounding area, including Kankakee, Joliet, and Door County. It’s also frequently performed at private venues. By performing this engagement at the Elgin Art Showcase people who have wanted to see the show for years will now have an opportunity.

“Every year people ask us where they can see the show and we’re usually either too far away from them or we’re performing at a private event and just can’t invite them” said Jim Goodrich, owner of With A Voice Like This and co-producer. “So this year we’re self-producing the show and I am fortunate to have received an Individual Artist Grant from the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission to help do just that.”

Add to that the Romance Premium Cafe has partnered with Home for the Holidays to provide a “Dinner and a Show” package for the Friday and Saturday evening performances and anyone can make it a wonderful kickoff for the holiday season.
