It's been a right long time since I've dropped by to fill up the tank, and I have to admit that this practice of intentional thankfulness is one I've neglected in more than a lack of blogging about it. So, here goes a short list of all the ways I'm currently seeing God fill my tank:

He provides for me and my family in ways we'd not imagined possible when my Darling Prince left his job as a teacher last May.

He surprises me with little gifts to bring joy to my soul -- like a cute notebook from a friend -- that was just today!

He gives me reasons to laugh at myself and laugh along with my sweet family as we find ourselves incredibly funny most of the time.

He answers my heart cry as I long for answers He isn't ready to give yet and reminds me His timing truly is perfect.

He holds me close, and when I can't feel Him He sends my Darling Prince to my side so I can feel His arms with flesh on them.

He reveals Himself in the glorious colors of the sunset, reminding me of His constant presence that is dependable day after day. Hebrews 13:8

He sings to me through the voice of the cricket living under my refrigerator right now. I am trying to see it as Him trying to get my attention, because right now the thing sounds like it is as big as our dog and quite persistent in its song.

He allows me to open His Word and read truth to carry me through this difficult time of our walk together. This is my verse I am clinging to right now:

"Wait for the LORD;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the LORD!" Psalm 27:14 (ESV)

While I know there are many more ways my Heavenly Daddy is filling my tank to overflowing, I am going to stop now and savor His Word, as it is like honey on my tongue right now.

May your day be one where you take a moment to be intentionally thankful. It can completely change your perspective. I know it has mine!

Have a Thanks-filled day!

On His Adventure~

Best Book of 2011!

For the last couple of weeks I have had the opportunity to read Andy Andrews' new book, The Final Summit, which comes out tomorrow. It is a sequel of sorts to his runaway bestseller, The Traveler's Gift. I say of sorts because I think this book qualifies as a standalone book. You don't have to have read The Traveler's Gift, but it would help bring a greater understanding to the task presented in the book. David Ponder is back again, this time much later in life and facing life's storms again.

I must confess I was dubious about a sequel. The Traveler's Gift was such a powerful book that I was afraid Andy had bitten off more than he could chew, trying to continue David Ponder's story and still communicate great wisdom as he had before. The Traveler's Gift shared the collective wisdom of some of history's greatest individuals in a compelling story with which I could identify. I was afraid the sequel, in it's attempt to do the same, would come off as contrived.

Thankfully, I was wrong! I should never have doubted Andy's ability. In The Final Summit, he created a story equally as good! David once again encounters great people from history, and I am drawn in by the mix of cultures and accomplishment across the ages. How would such a diverse group interact? The peek Andy provides seems plausible. Reading this book made me feel as if I were listening to the impassioned pleas of Henry Fonda in the jury room in 12 Angry Men. I felt as if I was there, listening in on the conversations, sensing the energy in the room. David leads a great and august group of individuals in providing a two-word answer meant to get mankind back on track, so to speak.

Andy uses this idea as his means of communicating wisdom to the reader. It’s fun; it’s effective, and it can be life-changing if you let it. I could not recommend any other book more. Read The Final Summit. You’ll be glad you did!

Happy New Year 2011 . . . God is Already There!

Going back to the roots of why I titled this blog "Without Fear" several years ago, I eagerly anticipate what this new year holds -- knowing God is already there. He walks before me and makes my path straight, regardless of how often I look to the right or to the left and lose my focus on Him.

I take great comfort in the truth of Hebrews 13:8:

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."

No matter where I've been and my response to it, Jesus is the same. He consistently loves me, provides for me, and draws me into a closer walk with Himself.

One of the ways I plan to do my part in the coming year is to join these ladies here. Beth will be happy to explain it to you here and here. This will be my third year in a row of making a spiral and memorizing verses. Read all the posts dedicated to the Siesta Scripture memory team, and I'd encourage you to join in if you'd like to have the support and accountability of a huge group of women who love Jesus and are committed to hiding the living Word of God in their hearts.

I can't wait to get started! Though the spirals are available from Living Proof Ministries, I love being creative and customizing mine with scrapbooking paper, brads, and my own funky lettering. Let me know if you decide to join, and I will begin praying for you and for God's Word to sink deeply into your heart and take root.

I'm thoroughly enjoying my first day of 2011 as I watch the HGTV Tournament of Roses Parade, still clad in jammies and postponing anything productive until later today.

May your 2011 bring more than you can imagine, allowing Ephesians 3:20-21 to come alive for you in a whole new way.

On His Adventure (for a whole new year)~

Pam

Thursday Thanks Tank #165

Taking direction from my thankful friend:

This darling girl stole my heart and let me carry her around all day long. I loved every minute.

We missed out on the first White Christmas in Georgia in 180 years.Thankfully the cold stuck around long enough for my three to throw some icy snowballs at one another upon our return Sunday.

This season was one full of busyness and lots of changes for all of us, but we found that no matter where we are and what we have materially . . . God always shows up and the season is always about Jesus. We are very thankful for family and friends who fill our lives with love, laughter, and the reason to make the most of each day.

May your days be intentionally full of thanks as well.

On His Adventure~

Pam

Merry Christmas from the Darbonnes!

God has given us hope for today and anticipation for tomorrow, so we are still forging ahead.

Please pray all the details come together easily over the weekend and some of the bugs are ironed out in order to optimize our presence online more effectively. We are so new at all of this, and we want to do it the right way so the Lord will receive the most glory from our feeble efforts.

Thank you for your prayers and for your encouragement. It's been wonderful to hear from so many of you via email and Facebook with your hearty assurance of your prayers. We could not do any of what God has called us to without the body of Christ alongside us in this venture.

Have a great weekend, and I'll be checking in with updates and anything else that comes to mind!

I am grateful for all the men and women who have committed to making sure freedom is not a word that becomes archaic and dropped from our vocabulary. Thank you to each and every one of you who have served or are serving now. You and your families hold a treasured spot in my heart as I go about my days and sleep fearlessly at night.

I am grateful for my precious husband who has worked tirelessly to get our first audiobook ready to ship for our potential customers and in turn launch us on a new adventure as we start our first day of business as Darbonne Audiobooks! Thank you, Honey!

May you take time in your day to acknowledge the ways God is filling your tank with thanks! It can change your whole perspective.

On His Adventure~

Pam

I Can Keep Quiet No Longer

I've been out of pocket as far as blogging goes for a quite awhile. I've done a few Thursday Thanks Tanks, and I've hoped to begin blogging in earnest again. To be real honest, I've had more on my mind for the last six months than I've been able to share here.

Now, I am free to share, and it feels a bit like today is Christmas Eve.

Let me explain . . . my husband is a teacher by trade. He's taught in the private sector, the public school system, internationally in China, and in a number of other forums while in graduate school; as well as in a spiritual capacity through our various churches over the years.

Back in the spring, God made it very clear my husband was to leave the classroom. He put it on my heart a bit sooner than my Darling Prince's, but as we continued to pray separately and together it became crystal clear to both of us that God was challenging us to step out in faith -- ignoring the limitations set by our current economy, the thoughts and opinions of others, and what seemed "safe" to us.

So, although I had asked my Bible study friends to pray Trey would lose his job due to budget cuts; we were faced with a choice to make when it came time for him to turn in his contract and accept another year in his current high school English position . . . or to step out there into the unknown of self-employment. God gave us His Word as our guide, and we went ahead with His plan for us.

One day after Trey finished his job at the high school, he had a doctor's appointment that just confirmed once again we were headed in the right direction. His doctor told him straight out that the stress of his job was killing him. He said he normally wouldn't recommend quitting a "sure thing", but in this case the decision to walk away could very well save Trey's life. I'm already seeing the truth in the fact that my husband has lost more than 45 lbs. since leaving his teaching position!

That brings us to our "Christmas Eve-like" place we find ourselves in today. My precious, Darling Prince has always longed to use the God-given talent he has in his voice for ministry. We thought it might come in the form of radio (which he has had the opportunity to dabble in over the past nine months), but God has had other plans for our family. We are starting our own audiobook business with Trey as the chief storyteller.

Our desire as we launch Darbonne Audiobooks this Thursday . . . yes, tomorrow, is that we would be able to provide families with quality resources for their children. Our first audiobook will be available on our website tomorrow. Trey is reading adventure books by George Alfred (GA) Henty, a 19th century writer from Cambridge, England, who wrote stories specifically targeted at pre-adolescent and adolescent boys in order to teach them Christian and moral principles through the lives of men of character.

The first Henty book we are releasing is In The Heart of the Rockies, which "reveals the rugged character demanded of mountain men by their environment and times, and describes the challenges of the American West--a part of our heritage that helped make our country great."

Better said by my husband, this is the purpose of our business/ministry:

Darbonne Audiobooks wants to provide Power Tools for Parents in the form of audiobooks. GA Henty wrote adventure stories for boys for the purpose of teaching godly virtue to young boys. We are working to produce audiobooks complete with discussion guides to help parents reinforce those virtues included in Henty’s stories. Stories are like a drill to the heart; they cut through all the stuff in the way to get to the heart of the matter. It’s easy for boys to lose their way in our culture, and we want to provide parents with another way to connect with their children and teach them, without being preachy.

We would certainly appreciate your prayers as we launch this adventure tomorrow! Another way you can make a difference is by purchasing our first audiobook and listening to it. If you like what you hear, let others who have young boys know about it. Refer them to our website and we'll be happy to provide them with a valuable resource they can use to interact with their children on a deeper level.

Also, in the next couple of weeks we will be releasing our first book for girls . . . because we definitely don't want to leave them out! I will be narrating the first in a series of Elsie Dinsmore novels, by Martha Finley. This release will also include a discussion guide to help in fostering conversation once the listening is over.

Needless to say, we are excited and nervous -- kind of like when I was about to give birth for the first time. We are birthing this long-awaited business and trusting God to make His name great through it!

Thursday Thanks Tank #164

My Goodness! So much for my re-entering the blogging world in any sort of consistent manner. I guess I was a little presumptuous and a little more ambitious in my mind than the reality of my life would allow.

Anyway, I am bursting at the seams to do a little show and tell regarding the way God has literally been pouring my tank so full that it feels like He is using a fire hose to do the filling! Let me "show" first and then "tell", because the photos could tell the story themselves . . . but that would leave the fun out of it for me . . . so hang in there while I do some uploading and then meticulously describe what you've seen and how God made this the absolute living replica of His truth in Ephesians 3:20.
Here we go:

The entrance to God's shade of paradise for me.

Only a loving Daddy could have crafted the trip/vacation we took last weekend. Let me backtrack a bit in order to give you the full scope of what God did to make this possible and so incredibly huge for us.

Back in May I had the opportunity to share my prayer requests for the summer with our church prayer team. In that list of prayer requests I'd asked for these prayer warriors to pray our family would get to go on vacation together for the first time as a five-some. We've taken trips in the past, but it has always included a visit to extended family rather than just a family get away.

Summer came and went, and after a strenuous time of planning and executing our children's ministry events for several months -- I thought I was well-deserving of a break. My Darling Prince and I even went to great lengths to finagle a trip for ourselves right after Vacation Bible School was over. Needless to say, God put roadblocks in the path of any plans we tried to make on our own.

In comes the reason for this post: October 8th I got a text from my husband, who was out of town at the time. He told me to enter a contest online. So I did, after several hours of putting it off and playing with my kids who were on fall break. Later that afternoon I got a call from a number I didn't recognize . . . so I didn't answer it. The person left a voice mail, and I didn't listen to it either . . . until much later in the evening while sitting at the YMCA with my SweeTween and Star Wars LegoMan.

I finally listened to the voicemail that described the details of what I had won -- a four-day/three-night stay at a luxury condominium right on Orange Beach in Alabama. Oh, and I also won tickets to see Bon Jovi at one concert at the beach and Brad Paisley another night at the beach! Oh yes, and there were speedboat races at the beach all day Saturday that thoroughly mesmerized my son for hours while he soaked in our balcony hot tub and ate ice cream. : )

As the details for this trip began to unfold, we discovered how intimately God was involved in every one. He made it possible for us to take our kids out of school, for my Darling Prince to now be working for himself and be available to travel, for our vehicle to be in traveling condition, for our sweet neighbor to take care of our dog, for the weather to be absolutely gorgeous, for it to be an off-season time at the beach so the area was more relaxed and peaceful, and for us to have the opportunity to stay in a place we'd never ever been able to afford on our own.

He knew what we needed and chose to go above and beyond that in such an extravagant way it could only have come from His hand. One of the sweet ladies who had been praying for us all summer came to me last Thursday evening and asked if we'd ever gotten our trip, and I was humbled to tell her this was it . . . in God's timing, not mine.

After gathering all our things together and a seven-hour trek, we were welcomed to our condo. with a sweet basket of goodies, and as we explored our new surroundings we discovered all we'd ever hoped for and more. I especially enjoyed having laundry facilities in our unit and coming home with all clean clothes (all you moms out there can totally relate, I'm sure.) I also took full advantage of the indoor pool, outdoor pools, sauna, steam room, and easy access to the beach every chance I got.

Speaking of the beach, I am a true beach bum and shell stalker. No other place in God's creation speaks to me like being at the beach. I've not been since we left our home on the coast four years ago, and the majesty of God's splendor at the shore was not lost on me as I kept the doors open beachside the entire time we were there. Here are just a few of the ways God filled my tank:

I love to hear the water beating on the sand.

I love to see the spray of the salty mist.

I love to watch the waves soar over and under as they burst onto the surface of the shore.

I especially love the synchronicity of the tide going out while still coming in to tickle my toes and delight my soul as I try to outrun its waves that splash up on my legs -- inevitably soaking whatever pants I've neglected to roll high enough to avoid its reach.

I am always a child at the beach -- God's child and He my Daddy who pours out His blessing in the form of the ocean and its multi-faceted ways of bringing me joy unfettered.

I pick up shells, look for sea glass, stand awed at bits of sand dollars, and I am amazed at the sea life I get to see in person rather than gaze at in a book or online.

Now, lest I completely lose you in the midst of my gushing, I must let you know how God far exceeded my expectations or imaginations through this trip.

My precious DP has been working at a local radio station since January. Back in April he got me free tickets to a Bon Jovi concert in Atlanta -- the day of the concert. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons I was unable to go to that concert. I was disappointed, because I have always wanted to see Bon Jovi in concert. (Guess part of me is still that starstruck teenager trapped in a mid-40's body -- Hee, hee!)

So, when I found out part of my prize included concert tickets to Bon Jovi -- I was excited. I mean, really . . .

Libbyline and I before the concert!

If anyone is still reading, I must tell you that I am still overwhelmed by the goodness of our God. Not only did He abundantly bless me, He chose to do it in such a way that was absolutely unmistakeably from a Daddy who knows the desires of His daughter's heart. I left this weekend knowing my Heavenly Father knows me, loves me, wants to reveal Himself to me, and showers me with gifts immeasurable that I get to share with my own precious family and with anyone else who will take the time to listen/read! Thanks and praise to Him for all He has done.

Have a blessed and thanks-filled rest of your week!!

Yet, I have not been doing a good job of that since my sporadic re-entry to the blogging world.

It's not that I'm not thankful on other days of the week, but I make a special effort on Thursday to acknowledge God's unique and creative ways of "filling my tank", so to speak.

So this week I am going to share a list of big and little things God has done to fill up my tank:

This post absolutely rocked my heart. Go here, as I know it will touch yours as well. We also sponsor a daughter in Guatemala named Juana and have for three years now. I cannot begin to express the joy we receive from playing a tiny part in Juana's life. Receiving pictures she's drawn and letters she's dictated to one of the Compassion workers (she can't write yet), are blessings beyond what I could have anticipated when we chose be involved in her life. Maybe you'd like to sponsor a child as well, or at least read and pray for the Compassion Bloggers who are in Guatemala. right. now. Go here or here to read more. You may never be the same, and I know the child whose life you change with your gifts will be forever grateful for your commitment to release him or her from poverty in Jesus' name.

Juicy Juice Punch: I found a can of it at Big Lots today for 75 cents! I love this stuff, and it never ceases to remind me of a time in our lives when God chose to provide for us in a way that humbled and awed me.

Sibling Relationships -- never stop surprising me. The other day when SweeTween had a major bicycle blunder, her brother was so tender and gentle with her, expressing sincere concern for her welfare and helping her to get comfortable in spite of all the scrapes and bruises. It's moments like those that give me hope for their relationships of the future. : )

A mowed lawn: This is a constant sore spot in our home, so I am incredibly happy with the way it looks right now. Too bad it'll grow back!

Flowered Converse: These make me happy, too!

Special time reading as a family. Currently we are going through the Artemis Fowl series, and our whole family loves them. Thanks Eown Colfer!

Homemade Blueberry Waffles: I didn't eat any of them, but the sheer delight on my family's faces when I put them on the table before school was better than if I'd wolfed one down by myself. Gluten intolerance has its perks!

I am reminded day after day that God is alive and at work in my life. I am grateful for His hand moving and touched by His intricate attention to detail. He never tires of meeting my needs and the needs of those I love, and on days when I am too tired to take one more step -- that is a quality I greatly appreciate in my Daddy.

Have a thanks-filled day and take time to be intentionally grateful. You'll be amazed to see how God fills up your tank!

On His Adventure~

Thank y'all so much for lifting this precious family up in prayer. They are dear to my heart, and I know my friend, "A", is grateful for your intercession as well.

By the way, I never gave you the answer to Wordless Wednesday's question of "Where am I?" Though it kind of looks like I might have been at a place with sea oats and sea breezes, I was actually on the Berry College campus. I am incredibly blessed to be able to take many jaunts there, always tucking another photo opportunity into my scrapbook as a result.

Have a great Friday and fabulous weekend!

Can I tell you how good it feels to be back in the blogging "saddle" so to speak? I am finding new refreshment and energy from sharing my heart here. Weaving words is a cathartic experience for me, and I am not at all unaware of the privilege of this forum.

I have awakened today with a thankful heart, and I thought I'd just give you a peek into the ways God is filling my tank:

I have had the honor this summer to work with a precious college student alongside me in ministry. God has used her to challenge me, to encourage me, and to give me insight into what to expect in just a few short years when Libbyline is at this stage of her life. We have laughed uproariously together and cried a number of times together. She has poured her heart into the lives of the children at our church, and while it is a thankless job at times; I want to publicly thank her for her time, her energy, and her dedication to the task she was called to fulfill. She did it with excellence and tirelessly, regardless of the obstacles and difficulties along the way. She is a great mix of friend and daughter, and I am better for having gotten to know her.

I am so grateful for life and the promise each day holds. God has just been wowing me lately with the way He shows up and glorifies Himself, even in the tiniest details of my life. He cares about it all, and I am astounded at His attention to the seemingly mundane. To Him, none of it is mundane if it involves His beloved. I am learning to believe I am His beloved.

We have completely crossed over into the realm of having self-sufficient children. So much so, that DP and I are frequently left with the opportunity to steal away for a quick date. Last night it was a drive-thru experience at McDonald's for a frappe and a drive around town so we could talk. I am realizing these times are essential to keeping us connected and "on the same page." Thank you, Lord, for providing that time!

This one is silly, I know, but I am thankful for air conditioning. Our days have been in the upper 90's for weeks, and it looks like there is no break in sight. So, I am ultimately grateful for the ability to get out of the heat and ride/live in cooled comfort.

I am also extremely thankful for a new store that opened here this summer. One of the members of our church opened a "salvage" store. He sells mostly grocery items, along with other health & beauty products, diapers, drinks, and pet food. I haven't kept track, but I imagine I've already saved hundreds of dollars on my regular bill by shopping there. I love, love, love a bargain!

Before I head off into the whirlwind of my day, I have a prayer request:

***Please pray for my dear friend "A" and her little man, "M". He is in 2nd grade, and he has appendicitis. He will be having surgery this afternoon. Please pray for all to go smoothly and for his recovery to be quick and uneventful. She is a single mom and has two other boys to care for as well, so please pray for her as well. Thanks!!

Thanks for joining me today! If you have a chance today, pull away and take the time to be intentionally grateful. It's incredible how your perspective can change when your gaze is fixed on how our Father is working in our lives. : )

I know I am 43 years old and far removed from going back to school. I just do.

I love the look of brand new crayons that haven't been used yet. I routinely keep a box of at least 64 crayons at my disposal. My children know those are mama's crayons, and they<strike> never</strike>, <strike>rarely</strike>, <strike>sometimes</strike>, always ask if they can use them.

Once they are a bit rough around the edges, I will usually pass them on to the enormous box of crayons we keep for general use. I don't mind sharing once they are no longer pointy and beautiful.

Now I am rambling though. Let me get to the real point here -- A couple weeks back I was shopping for school supplies for my darlings, and I couldn't manage to leave the store without something I, too, would enjoy. So I bought a package of these, thinking I would write messages on the mirror in my kids' bathroom and pen the occasional mushy message to my DP on our master bathroom mirror.

This idea worked remarkably well, and the kids loved the messages on the first day of school while they brushed their teeth and my son tried to tame his unruly, cowlick-ridden mane.

My DP also responded well to the notes for him alone, and he wrote me back!

What I did not expect were the notes my children began to liberally add to the hearts and "I love you's" we boring parents had sketched. I came into my bathroom Friday night to a veritable cacophony (if that word even fits a description that speaks loudly without sound) of words all over my mirror. SweeTween and Star Wars Lego Man had been hard at work, and they had left their mark in innumerable ways. Here are a few that tugged on this mama's heart strings:

I love you

You're the best parents in the world

"mom's" right above my sink and "dad's" right above DP's

I think you're gorgeous.

You're an inspiration

Mama loves "Star Wars Lego Man"

I love y'all (This one from Libbyline)

Mommy and Daddy LOVE, LOVE, LOVE each uther

What I had bought with my own purpose in mind was transformed into a most pleasant surprise. My children blessed me in a way I wasn't expecting, and it became a family activity we all spontaneously enjoyed.

Just another lesson for this mama to remind me that some of the best ways to plan for success and family togetherness is to stay out of the way and let it happen all by itself.

As always, I'm . . .
Thursday Thanks Tank #161

Eight months have gone by, and I am beginning to feel the stirrings in my spirit to express myself in a more tangible way than a random post in a journal or my pithy status updates on Facebook.

My Heavenly Father has wired me in such a way, and while I have recently squelched that natural bent to create and to weave words together; He has continued to tenderly tug on my heart to write.

I guess it's providential that I re-enter the bloggy world with a Thursday Thanks Tank, as it has been the glue holding this place together for me for almost five years. As a matter of fact, my five-year blogging anniversary is on the horizon . . . in about three days. : )

This year has been full of changes, full of heart-wrenching moments, and full of God's hand moving and blessing all over the place. Here are just a few of the ways (in no particular order) He's been filling up my tank:

1. A new business venture for my DP. After almost 19 years in and out of different classrooms, both private and public -- my precious husband is embarking on developing his own online audio book business. I'll keep you posted as to our launch date soon!

2. Three children at three different schools. While that may not seem like a blessing at first, it truly is a mark of answered prayers. Libbyline is now a freshman at one of our smaller county high schools and finding her way in this new adventure. SweeTween is a seventh grader at our city middle school and absolutely shining in her accomplishments already. That leaves my Star Wars Legoman in elementary school as a fourth grader. He loves his school and his friends, and though we've got an intricate and strategic pick up routine; it is a true pleasure to see each of my children in the place God has set for them.

3. Hearing God's voice. It is true that when we attune our ears to hear, He will respond. I spent the summer going through two very different Bible studies: One In A Million by Priscilla Shirer and Captivating, by John and Stasi Eldredge.

The Lord has used both of these studies to cause me to delve into my own heart and His Word, in addition to providing me with much-needed fellowship and accountability from other women who are also in the trenches of their own journeys with our Father.

4. A "new-to-us" vehicle. Back in the Spring, my DP and I were chatting one day about our need for a second vehicle in the near future -- especially as Libbyline will be getting her learner's permit (ACK!) in November. Without my knowledge, DP had prayed we would hear something tangible by the end of that day (a Friday).

After running an errand that afternoon, we pulled into our driveway and received a call from my precious MIL. She gets right to the point and lets us know that my ever-persistent FIL had finally convinced her to get a new car -- that day! She asked me if we'd want her old car, and I told her we'd just been talking about God providing a second vehicle for our family. She went on to tell me that they wanted to give it to us for FREE! As you might imagine, we were struck speechless.

Fast forward a bit with DP taking SweeTween to Louisiana right after school was out and bringing back our Toyota Camry, and we see God's hand at work in mighty ways again!

This just barely scratches the surface of how God's faithfulness has carried us thus far through our year, but it has been great for me to take the time this morning to intentionally gaze on His provision for us.

I am eager to see what God chooses for me to share as I re-focus and allow Him to develop this desire to use my writing for His glory. I pray you will join me . . .

On His Adventure~

I still keep in touch with a number of blogging friends via Facebook, but to be gut-level honest here -- I no longer find blogging the outlet for writing that it once was for me. I am grateful for the relationships I have gained through this forum, and I won't say that I'll never take up the blogging keyboard again -- especially to post the ways I am thankful. Yet, for a variety of reasons my Thanks Tank grew into a legalistic battle for me that I no longer desire to wage.

I'd like for 2010 to be much more about grace in my life. I want to learn to accept it as well as extend it. So for now I am bidding this blog a peaceful farewell -- not forever, but for an undetermined amount of time in order to evaluate whether this place is one in which I want to share myself and my writings.

As always, feel free to contact me via my email address or on Facebook if we are friends there.

<span style="font-weight: bold; In The Male Factor, best-selling author Shaunti Feldhahn reveals the inner reality behind men’s views — the unspoken expectations that no man would dare to publicly acknowledge, and no woman would learn from an HR department. These revelations include:

• Men’s unwritten ‘rules’ of the workplace
• How men perceive workplace emotion
• What common situations with female colleagues most frustrate men-- and why
• Why revealing clothing can sabotage a woman’s effectiveness
• Why some men think flextime is fine, but equal compensation for it is not

The Male Factor equips women with the information they need to make informed decisions and compete on a level playing field.

Author Bio:

Shaunti Feldhahn is a nationally syndicated columnist and the bestselling author of For Women Only: What You Need to Know About the Inner Lives of Men and For Men Only, which together sold one million copies. She holds a Master in Public Policy from Harvard, worked on Wall Street and now lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

MY REVIEW

I firmly believe, if taken seriously by corporate America and implemented in the work force of both Christian and non-Christian women alike, we would see an incredible turnaround in the effectiveness of women in the marketplace.

This book is eye-opening in its clear cut research, examples, and timely applications for women in the workplace. I do not work in a corporate office, but I do work with a number of different men in my job. The insights Ms. Feldhahn shares in The Male Factor are incredibly helpful and worth taking the time to investigate further, as well as begin applying NOW.

Though I did not delve into this book with excitement because I am not in the throes of corporate America, I was pleasantly surprised by its usefulness and straightforward assessment of the business world today -- especially in regards to a male perspective on women in their midst.

The tools Ms. Feldhahn offered throughout the book are extremely helpful, but as a Christian woman working in an office I was especially interested in the final chapter with advice and tips from other Christian women in the workplace. Insight #3 hit home with me the most, and I share it here in hopes that it will help align your perspective with a biblical principle: "Ultimately I am working for Jesus -- and it is what He asks of me, and what He thinks, that matters most." (Colossians 3:23, ESV)

So, I applaud Ms. Feldhahn for embracing a topic that hasn't been over-addressed in the media or in book form for that matter, for doing such thorough research, and for using so many real-life examples that personalized it in a way made this book an accessible and enjoyable read.

If you would like to get a copy of The Male Factor for yourself, don't hesitate to go here.

***This book was provided for review by the WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group
On His Adventure~

Pam

Thursday Thanks Tank #160

I believe it's never too late to take time to be thankful. Yesterday kind of got away from me as I spent time with family and took my three-hour power nap in order to gear up for a little midnight "Black Friday" shopping spree!

While I am incredibly grateful for this season of thankfulness, I am going to share an abbreviated version of ways God has blessed me throughout this year . . . much the same as we did during our Thanksgiving meal yesterday:

Confidence and growth for Sweetcheeks as she returned to school as a sixth grader and has excelled far beyond anything she could have imagined.

The ease of communication with family via email, Facebook, and cell phones.

A complete turn around for JD Green as he has grown into an "A" student who thoroughly enjoys school and has added pleasure reading to his list of hobbies that are usually much more active.

A transformation of Libbyline into a well-seasoned 8th grader who knows who she is, what she believes in, and is far more comfortable in her 14-year-old skin than I ever hoped to be at that age.

Special events that we "happened upon" -- a day splashing at the new fountains in our down town, a free concert in which we got to see bag pipes and an incredible "celtic" drummer, a weekend away with a good friend to a conference that touched my heart, a couple of treasure hunts as we "geocached" as a family, discovering our new family favorite for pizza, and an evening of wonderful worship as we listened to the voices of precious children from Africa .

Significant weight loss on the part of my DP. As of Wednesday, his total weight loss for this year is 50 lbs. +!!

Also articulated yesterday were the health of our family members, our salvation, the unexpected monetary gifts that came at just the right time, and the enduring goodness of our Heavenly Father.

All in all, God has shown Himself faithful and abundant in His presence and presents to us. We are enormously blessed and grateful for each and every bit of it.

May your day be full of joy, laughter, and leftovers aplenty! May you rest and relax or hit the stores for bargains galore if that's your desire. I'm just now getting into my day as my shopping for Black Friday began at Midnight!

Grateful for all of you as well.

On His Adventure~

Pam

Thursday Thanks Tank #159

I have been trying to actively focus on reasons to be grateful this week. Here are some of the ways God is filling my tank with thanks:

This song:

Great reports: Jody, my friend ML's husband, is healing nicely and starting to get stir crazy at home as he recovers from major surgery. That's always a good sign! Praise the Lord for answering the prayers of so many faithful prayer warriors. Thank you!! Praises, too, for God's continued provision for this family.

My Job: I am so incredibly thankful for work that so completely suits me. I love what I do as the Children's ministry assistant, and I am amazed that the Lord provided me with something that fits our family's schedule to a "T".

Soup: This is just one more reason I love this season. In addition to it being autumn, it is "soup" season in our house. I love the smell and the coziness associated with a pot of hot, steaming yumminess. What's your favorite kind of soup? Leave me your recipe if you don't mind!

Stillness: This one is hard for me to seek out, but I am so grateful for it when I make time in my day for it. Headed off for some with my Jesus right now.

*** Had to add this one . . . Washer and Dryer . . . in my house: How grateful I am for these conveniences. I may complain and not so inwardly groan about the never-ending task of doing laundry, but I am very, very grateful for being able to accomplish such a task in the comforts of my own home with little to no physical taxing on my part.

Have a fantastic weekend. May the Lord reveal to you His creative ways of filling your tank and may you testify to others about His goodness!

From a thanks-filled heart . . .

On His Adventure~
Pam

Fun Fall Reads Blog Tour

I have thoroughly enjoyed what I have read of these titles. I encourage you to take some time throughout the rest of your fall to pick up one or all of them for those cozy nights by the fireplace when all your daily busyness has slowed down to a crawl and the longer evenings abound. I plan to do more of that myself, especially as the tasks of the holidays loom largely on the horizon.

You will not be disappointed with any of the following novels. Read on for more about each:
Leaving Carolina, by Tamara Leigh
Summary:

Piper Wick left her hometown of Pickwick, North Carolina, twelve years ago, shook the dust off her feet, ditched her drawl and her family name, and made a new life for herself as a high-powered public relations consultant in LA. That’s a disaster waiting to happen. And when Maya plays her dad’s old acoustic guitar in front of an audience, she discovers talents and opportunities she never expected. Faced with new options, Maya must choose between a “normal” life and a glamorous one. I love days set aside to give thanks, and I can't help but think this month is the one time we can make an effort to be intentionally thankful every. single. day. Though we are five days into it, here is my first public list of the ways God is filling my tank:

Birthdays -- We celebrated Livieline's 14th, yes, 14th birthday on Sunday, and I am so incredibly thankful for the lovely young woman she is becoming . . . both inside and out.

Chilly mornings -- Such a good reason to have a cup of hot coffee!

Days off -- I am thoroughly enjoying this one and plan to soak up the free time like I drink in sunshine.

Christmas Music -- I have now created an "All I Want for Christmas is You" station on pandora.com. I never think it's too early to listen to Christmas music and often turn to it in the middle of the summer if I need a cheery "pick-me-up", but having a library that surpasses my own 400+ iTunes collection is almost intoxicating. : ) Bring on the candy canes and hot chocolate!

Benadryl -- Love this stuff, especially after I've been subjected to all-over itching TWICE in the past week. I'm not sure what's causing it yet, but I am sure glad to have this quick solution when it does occur. Pray that we get to the bottom of these uncomfortable and mysterious reactions soon.

Fall foods -- I stocked up on pumpkin pie mix, sweet potatoes, cranberries, and also bought my Thanksgiving turkey yesterday. I love all the rich, yummy comfort foods that accompany this cozy season. What are some of your favorites? Share the recipes if you don't mind. : )

Crayons -- I may have already shared this one, but I love a new box of 64 crayons, and I've been putting them to use lately as I discovered some fun lettering books I'd forgotten until I cleaned in the garage a couple of weekends ago. Crafting is always a relaxing pursuit for me, and I don't think you're ever too old for a new box of crayons.

Early morning snuggles -- Due to the fact that my nine-year-old set his alarm for a time he had no intention of getting up to this morning, I had a chance to snuggle with my 11-year-old who did respond to her brother's alarm. : ) Sweetcheeks is my light sleeper, so it was no surprise that her brother's alarm shook her out of her slumber. Thankfully we made the most of it!

Falling Leaves -- I love seeing the colors during the fall, but it always tickles me when the leaves are in the midst of falling while I am driving. I never cease to get startled when an errant leaf strikes my windshield and I momentarily think it's coming through to fall on me. : ) I chuckle out loud at my own silliness. What a silly old bear I am!

Quiet -- It is so hard for me to stop talking and just listen. Being here alone forces me to be still and listen to the voice of my Father while nothing else is competing for my attention. I think I'll take this time and go spend some quiet time with Him now.

Have a blessed day and find a moment or two to think about how God is filling up your tank this week. I'd love it if you'd share one or two of those with me if you have the chance.

On His (Thanks-filled) Adventure~

Pam

Thursday Thanks Tank #157

I actually have a quiet moment at home this morning, so I thought I'd take some time while being surrounded by the swell of sound from pandora.com to recount a few of my favorite ways God has chosen to fill up my tank this week:

Blue skies -- the sky yesterday and today has been a brilliantly gorgeous blue that makes a stunning backdrop for my next item . . .

Fall leaves -- the colors are more muted this year, but in teamwork with the blue sky it still makes me suck in my breath when I gaze upon God's handiwork for our benefit.

Crisp, cool air -- How I love this time of year that allows me to breathe deeply and fill my lungs with its invigorating coolness. I also enjoy the need for a sweater to stay cozy and an extra blanket at night.

Hot Drinks -- I'm back to loving coffee every morning after trying to give it up for a few months, but I am also a big fan of hot tea. I fill my mug frequently with either brew and fully enjoy a wide range of flavors that smell as good as they taste.

Laughter -- I don't do this nearly often enough. So I am grateful to the Lord for reminding me to take more opportunities to laugh with my children, to laugh when things don't go exactly the way I planned, and to laugh at myself instead of being so rigid that I miss what God has for me in the midst of a good, loud laugh. Try it! You'll see the benefits too!

Phone Calls -- My best friend in the whole, wide world is many hours from me enduring a huge crisis in her life. In lieu of my being able to get to her physically, we have been heavily relying on phone calls for encouragement, for support, for venting, for crying together, and for fellowship. While this is not the ideal, I am grateful for the ease of communication available via a simple phone call. Please pray along with me for her and her husband, Jody.

Promises -- I'm claiming this one today, for me and for all who read along here: "And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others." 2 Corinthians 9:8 (NLT)

Cherry Limeades -- I love treating myself to these. Now you can too. Go to your local Sonic on Saturday, October 31, between 2pm and 5pm and receive a free 14 oz. cherry limeade. Sounds like a great deal to me!

Books -- I am a confirmed, dyed-in-the-wool bibliophile. I adore books of all shapes, sizes, and genres. So imagine my joy as my son (who was not a reader) has started voraciously devouring this series. Fills up my tank and my heart. The adventures that books can offer is limitless.

Speaking of adventures, I am headed to have lunch with my elementary students here in a little while. So while I must close and get on my way, I pray that you will take the time to be intentionally grateful today. Take a look around you and identify those things God has used to fill your tank this week. You'll be blessed for it. Don't forget to let me know so I can rejoice with you!

On His Adventure~

Pam

The Swiss Courier~ Blog Tour

Wow! I haven't read a book in awhile that pulled me into its pages like a magnet. The Swiss Courier is one such book. The storyline is continually on the move and leaves the reader no time for catching breath, let alone to be bored. The masterful telling is captivating in a way that combines intrigue and suspense with characters you can't help but identify with in one way or another.

I wholeheartedly agree with Lenora Worth who said this,

"'This was a time of war, not love.' That statement from the beginning pages of The Swiss Courier sets the tone for this gripping, fast-paced story of honor and duty set in 1944 against the backdrop of World War II. With an intensity that builds to the very end, this book is compelling, chilling, and fascinating."

I'll be finishing the last pages over the weekend, but I needed to post this in a timely fashion since I missed my slot yesterday due to visits to the doctor for both of my girls.

This book was provided for review by the Litfuse Publicity Group.

Read on for more info to whet your appetite:

About the book:
It is August 1944 and the Gestapo is mercilessly rounding up suspected enemies of the Third Reich. When Joseph Engel, a German physicist working on the atomic bomb, finds that he is actually a Jew, adopted by Christian parents, he must flee for his life to neutral Switzerland. Gabi Mueller is a young Swiss-American woman working for the newly formed American Office of Strategic Services (the forerunner to the CIA) close to Nazi Germany. When she is asked to risk her life to safely "courier" Engel out of Germany, the fate of the world rests in her hands. If she can lead him to safety, she can keep the Germans from developing nuclear capabilities. But in a time of traitors and uncertainty, whom can she trust along the way? This fast-paced, suspenseful novel takes readers along treacherous twists and turns during a fascinating--and deadly--time in history.

About the authors:

Tricia Goyer is the author of several books, including Night Song and Dawn of a Thousand Nights, both past winners of the ACFW's Book of the Year Award for Long Historical Romance. I try to take the time each day to appreciate both the large and small. I hope the following list will give you a peek into what fills up my tank:

Happy hearts -- what joy when my children do what I ask without grumbling or complaining.

Shopping for work -- truly fun to get to do that and get paid for it. : )

Bargains -- Ok, people. I hit the jackpot this week at Wally World! I found floor lamps in the housewares clearance aisle and they were . . . $3.50. Yes, you read that right! These came in five bright colors perfect for tween and teenage bedrooms. I picked up an aqua and a "spicy" lime one. The girls just changed the theme in their room to aqua/turquoise and brown, so the lamp for their room coordinates perfectly. My son is still a huge fan of green , so he was thoroughly pleased with the new addition to his room.

Reminders -- I'm one who needs to be reminded often of God's love for me and that He made me on purpose for a purpose. Wow! Our current sermon series and small group curriculum have thoroughly hit the spot.

Cute shoes -- Oh, how this brings me joy! I love shoes, and I absolutely swoon over some of the darling ones that are available to me in children's sizes. I wear a 6 1/2 or 7 in women's which translates to a 4 or 4 1/2 in children's shoes. I found the sweetest little pair of running/walking shoes that are pink and white. Love, love, love them and their reduced price as well.

Snacks

Snuggling

Schedules

Simplicity

Savior -- How incredibly grateful I am for this. My life will never be the same.

I pray your week is being filled with a multitude of ways that give evidence of God filling your tank. God's blessings!

On His Adventure~

Pam
