"Scrap-Frames" A Creative, Unique, & Fun Gift Idea!

Ever been stuck thinking long & hard about

what to get the person who has everything?

Or, maybe you are low on fund$ recently,

but you want to give a meaningful gift.

Or, perhaps you're just in the creative mood & want to have a little fun ....

I found myself a little bit of all three -

So, I came up with the idea to make my own "Scrap-Frames"!

With a little help from Michael's Craft Store & my imagination, I created two beautiful frames for my Mom (for Mother's Day!) & for my little brother (for his Birthday!).

After digging through some old photo's, I found a cute picture of my mom & I when I was a baby & an adorable picture of my brother & I from our summers out in Shelter Island!

These old photo's were a great addition to the handmade, thoughtful & unique frame!

Want to make your own "Scrap-Frame"?

It's Easy!

Supplies:

Bare wood frame from Michaels

Acrylic Paint (washable)

I used Craft Smart Acrylic Craft Paint - it's cheap & comes in hundreds of colors!

Sponge Brush

Water & Wash Bowl

Wood Glue (dries clear)

Mod Podge (waterbase sealer, glue, & finish)

Scrapbook stickers, decorations, magazine cut-outs, quotes, photo's etc...decorate your frame with anything that will stay glued to it!

Steps:

1. paint frame & allow it to dry - several coats may be necessary

2. glue on your decorations & allow to dry

3. paint on mod podge over decorations & entire frame - use two - three coats

*mod podge may look too white over decorations, but don't worry, it will dry clear!

This is a fun way to give a gift that shows you care! It's also a great way to spend some creative quality time with kids!

Time Capsule!

“Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't
own it, but you can use it. You can't keep
it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it
you can never get it back.”

While I was on vacation in Barbuda for NYE 2009 with my family this past holiday , my Aunt J. had a great idea, she said, "why don't we all write a letter to our future-selvs & contribute something ... anything ... that you will find interesting, funny, or inspiring ten years from now!"
In other words, A FAMILY TIME CAPSULE!

Honestly, this is one of the best, most creative, and fun things you can do with your friends, family, or significant other! Personally, I think Janurary is a good time to put it together so that you can open it up on NYE the next year, in 5 years, or in 10 years - but you can really start your time capsule whenever you want. Be as creative as you'd like and leave it hidden for as long as you'd like - it is YOUR time capsule!

Creative Ideas & Examples for a Homemade Time Capsule:

1. Tell everyone who is contributing to the capsule they must hand in two things

Thing #1 - A handwritten (more authentic than typed) note or letter to their future-selves (could include what you're currently doing, your hopes & dreams for the future, or a funny inside joke with yourself).

Thing #2 - Any object you wish (I put in a business card from my current job), but you can include anything.
Example, my 22 year old and recent college grad brother put in an ATM receipt that read a negative $25 balance!
(he hopes he can laugh at that 10-years from now!)
Example, my cousin Tommy, age 14, threw in a hood he cut off one of his favorite sweatshirts that was falling apart!

2. Make your Time Capsule from scratch using things you already have around the house
- the more random the better

Example: I used an old UPS box that I had from a delivery and covered it with tourquoise tissue paper to make it look pretty. Next, since I was on vacation in Barbuda, I took one of the free scenic post cards from the front desk and wrote on the top "BONANNO FAMILY TIME CAPSULE - 2010"

Suggestions & Ideas:
Use old Tupperware, gift boxes, shoe box, tin container etc...
Cover with news papers, magazines, articles, left over holiday wrapping paper, construction paper, tin foil, etc...
Decorate with markers, garland, stickers, pictures etc...

3. Have everyone participating put their "things" into the box, seal it up, pick a date to open it, and "hide" it in a spot that you will remember.

Suggestion:
Add a reminder for that date in your calendar

4. Have fun with this - it is a great way to gather with the people you love and share great memories!

'09 Holiday's In The Islands Mon

Back to real life after a two week sabbatical in the BVI's (British Virgin Islands) & trying to get back into the swing of things!

We had quite the adventure (& drama) making it down to our first destination thanks to a timely winter snow storm in NY! Eventually, we made it ...

First stop - Anegada, BVI

GORGEOUS, REMOTE, UNTOUCHED, & RELAXING TO THE MAX

Cow Wreck Beach, Anegada

Known for it's amazing snorkeling, Anegada is one of the best well-kept secrets of the Caribbean. We stayed at Neptune's Treasure, which isn't exactly the lap of luxory, but it's very pretty, clean, on the water, affordable, and equip with AC, a friendly staff (specifically Randy, our buddy!), and within walking distance of all the "hot spots"

(and by hot spots I mean the two other "bars" on the island!).

Second Stop - Barbuda, BVI

BEAUTIFUL, EXCLUSIVE, UPSCALE RUGGED LUXURY, ALL INCLUSIVE,

& FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

My Aunt J has been vacationing in Barbuda, specifically at CoCo Point Resort, for the past twenty years. This year she invited my dad's entire side of the family down for a family reuinion in the sun! It was great - my three cousins, my brother, my boyfriend, and I all shared a guest house on the beach while the "adults" (because I still feel weird considering myself one of those), stayed in one of the rooms either on the beach or the bay. Shoes are optional at CoCo Point, but everyone dresses up in their best beachy-chic outfits.

Water sport options are endless - skiing, wake boarding, tubing, deep sea fishing, kayaking, paddle boats, sailing, etc... you name it they have it - and the friendly staff is always willing to take you out on the boat when you want.

Happy hour sunsets every night set the mood for each fabulous dinner at the club house. Everyone at the resort gathers around 7:30PM for cocktails and the "cheese platter" to mingle and catch-up until you sit with your party for a great three-course meal.

I'd love to share more, but I must get back to my real job : )

PINK Magazine - Empowering Women

PINK Magazine has become one of my daily online reads. It's an informative, inspiring, and empowering tool that is tailored to all women, specifically young professionals. The writers do a great job of covering everything from sales on women's suits and leadership tips for all women to breast cancer awareness and charity events.

There is an upcoming PINK Enpowerment 2009 Conference in NYC this November 9th. The focus will be on Leadership, Balance, Finance, & Marketing for women professionals. My firm is sponsoring me and a colleague of mine to attend and I am definitely looking forward to it!

Custom Party Favors!

My 25th Birthday weekend was a huge success! I had all of my best friends together, beautiful weather, and of course... lots and lots of wine!

Two of my best friends, KAG & Bridget, drive in from Boston, my brother drove up from Maryland, my roommate and my boyfriend went above & beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly on the vineyard tour, and I even had friends rearrange their plans for me - all in all, my friends really went out of their way to make the weekend extra special!

I wanted to show them how much I appreciated everything, so I decided to make party favors! Seeing as how I love all things custom & personalized and we were embarking on an all day vineyard tour, I thought it was appropriate to design monogrammed wine glasses for everyone!

It was simple, easy to do, & fun! I made them two nights before the party and had them wrapped-up & displayed on the table when everyone arrived. I designed each glass differently and everyone seemed to really enjoy them!

Want to do this yourself?

Here is the list of supplies that I used & the steps that I followed:

Wine glasses

Enamel Paint Markers (all different colors)

Clear dry enamel spray paint

Clear party favor bags

Ribbon

Colorful tissue paper

Clear tape

Scissors

Nail polish remover

Q-tips

Wax paper

Soap, water, & a sink

How to make your own monogrammed wine glasses:

1. Simply wash all the wine glasses with soap and water, then let them all dry.

2. While the glasses are drying, look online for some creative monogramming ideas

3. Using the paint markets, start drawing! Don't be afraid to be creative!

*try not to make the paint layer too thick, it may run when you apply the final enamel spray coat later!

4. If you make a mistake, simply use a Qtip & nail polish remover to correct your mistake.

*be sure to wash the nail polish remover off after you have made the correction!

4. Allow paint on glasses to dry upside down on wax paper over night

5. In a well ventilated room, spray each glass with the clear enamel spray paint

* be sure to spray a light even coat over the painted areas - do not spray it on too thick!

6. Allow glasses to dry upside down on wax paper over night again

7. Rinse glasses off, dry, & wrap!

8. I stuffed one piece of colored tissue paper in the glass so it was coming out the top, then wrapped the glass in a different colored piece of tissue paper, placed the wrapped glass in a clear plastic party-favor bag, secured it up top with clear tape, & wrapped ribbon around the top! Add a small "Thank-you" card with their name & Wa-la ... cute, custom, & personalized party favors!

My 25th Birthday a la North Fork Vineyards!

I turn the big-25 this Friday September 18^th! One of my best friends & roommate, Lauren (Sapo) & my oh-so thoughtful boyfriend have planned an awesome weekend out on Long Island’s North Fork to celebrate! There will be 26 of my best friends from high school & Villanova - I can't wait to see them all!

Wine-tasting tours on Long Island have become increasingly popular with the mid-twenties crowd over the past two years. The North Fork vineyards are beautiful and extremely accommodating to large crowds. Most people rent a bus, limo, or in our case trolley for the day to transport you & your party from vineyard to vineyard.

It’s a great alternative to renting out a bar, or going to a club for your birthday. Many of these vineyards have live music on the weekends, quaint and scenic tasting rooms for you and your party, and the owners are always friendly and accommodating. It is time to get out of the city, be outdoors in the fresh country air, and learn a bit about wine along the way!

Here’s a sneak preview into what I think my weekend is going to entail – I hope this inspires you to book your weekend on the North Fork!

LAB’s 25^th Birthday Weekend Itinerary:

Friday Night:

Drive out to my parent’s summer home in Peconic, Long Island after work & go out to dinner at Claudio’s in Greenport (which is the cutest little town on the water!) with some of by best friends!

Saturday:

9AM: Bagels, mimosas, & lots of coffee while waiting for the rest of the crew to arrive.

12 Noon: Trolley arrives to pick us all up (26 of us in total!)

Stock the trolley with snacks for the day & get on our way!

12:15-1PM: Pindar vineyard

1:15-2PM: Bedell vineyard

2:15-3PM: Duck Walk vineyard

3:15-5:30PM: Vineyard 48

6PM: Drop-off home & BBQ at my summer house!

6PM – TBD: BBQ, bon-fire, s’mores, & of course... a dance party!

Sunday:
